For curation in the strict sense—deciding which games a store accepts into its catalog—GOG is the clearest choice. For human- and community-led encounters with unusual games, start with itch.io. For personalized recommendations and several different discovery routes, Steam offers the broadest set of documented mechanisms. Those are answers to different meanings of “curation,” not a universal quality ranking: the available evidence does not establish which store finds better games for players overall.

At a glance

Name Best for Key distinction Checked
GOG Players who want a storewide selection gate GOG says it chooses the games in its catalog Oct 2026
itch.io Finding unusual work through editorial highlights and community collections Staff picks and user collections sit alongside broader browse and indexing features Oct 2026
Steam Personalized suggestions and multiple discovery routes Player-driven recommendations, tags, queues, and Curators serve different roles Oct 2026

The ranking depends on what you expect curation to do. GOG leads if you mean a selective catalog; itch.io is the strongest starting point for human and community signals; Steam is a fit for recommendation variety. None of those distinctions proves higher average game quality or better discovery success.

What does “curation” mean on a game store?

“Curation” can describe at least three different decisions: which games are allowed into a store, which games receive prominent editorial attention, and which games a system recommends to an individual. Confusing those layers makes store comparisons misleading. A selected catalog is not the same thing as a hand-picked homepage, and a personalized recommendation is not necessarily an editorial endorsement.

For this comparison, the practical question is not simply which store has the most indie games or the most polished front page. It is which discovery mechanism suits the way you want to find games. GOG describes selection at the catalog level; itch.io documents staff highlights and community collections as part of a wider publishing and browsing environment; Steam describes player-driven visibility, recommendation features, and curator input. Each approach can be useful, but each signals something different.

Is GOG the most curated indie-game store?

GOG is the strongest choice if “curated” means the store chooses which games appear in its catalog. The company says, “Every game is here because we chose it for you,” in its About GOG description. That is a clear statement of its selection policy, not an independent audit of game quality.

What GOG’s selection claim does—and does not—tell you

A catalog gate can give players a more selective starting shelf than a store that also indexes a much wider range of projects. But a selection claim does not tell you that every listed game will match your taste, that the catalog contains every worthwhile indie release, or that a game’s presence amounts to a guarantee of quality. The useful inference is narrower: GOG presents itself as choosing its catalog rather than treating inclusion as automatic.

That distinction is especially valuable if you want the store itself to do some filtering before you browse. It is less helpful if your main goal is to encounter the widest possible range of experimental work, or if you want a recommendation system to adapt to your own play patterns. Those are separate discovery questions, and the catalog-selection statement alone does not answer them.

How to browse GOG’s indie catalog

GOG’s indie category provides filters including tags, genres, operating systems, and other attributes. Use those controls to narrow the selected catalog to a practical shortlist: a genre or theme can establish the kind of game you want, while an operating-system filter can help avoid results that do not suit your setup. Filter availability is useful for browsing; it should not be mistaken for evidence that GOG has independently assessed every game against a single standard of quality.

GOG also distinguishes itself through DRM-free downloads and backup options, as described in its About GOG materials. That may matter to a buyer deciding where to keep a game, but it is an access and ownership consideration—not proof that GOG’s editorial taste is better. Keep the two questions separate: “Which store’s catalog selection appeals to me?” and “How do I want to access the games I buy?”

Is itch.io hand-curated?

No—not as a description of the whole store. itch.io has documented staff picks and user collections, but those signals coexist with broader publishing, search, and browse systems. Its editorial explanation dates to March 15, 2018, so it supports the existence of those approaches, not a promise that today’s homepage has the same layout or a particular number of highlighted games.

Where the human and community signals help

Staff-selected highlights can point you toward games that have received editorial attention, while collections made by users can surface work grouped by a person or community’s interests. These routes are useful when you want someone’s selection to act as a starting point rather than relying only on a popularity list or a personalized feed. itch.io’s account of its approach describes both kinds of discovery and automated recommendations; it does not characterize every game on the platform as hand-picked. Read the distinctions in itch.io’s explanation of how it curates.

That mix is part of the appeal for players interested in niche, experimental, or otherwise less conventional projects: human collections and editorial choices can express a point of view that a generic search result does not. The trade-off is that a highlighted selection is only one path through a larger catalog. A game appearing on itch.io is not, by itself, evidence that staff endorsed it.

How to browse itch.io by topic

For a specific niche, start with itch.io’s browse tags rather than assuming that general text search is a complete discovery tool. The platform says tags belong to browsing pages and are separate from search; its guidance says search is optimized for direct title queries. See itch.io’s search and browse indexing guidance. In practical terms, if you know a game’s name, search is appropriate; if you want to explore a theme, browse relevant tags and collections.

There is also a timing distinction between publishing a project and its appearance in search or browse. itch.io’s documentation notes that a published project may not yet be indexed. So a missing result does not necessarily mean a project was rejected or does not exist; it can reflect the separate indexing process. For players, the takeaway is to use the discovery route designed for the task rather than treating one search box as a complete map of the platform.

Does Steam curate indie games?

Steam has several discovery systems, but its main personalized capsule should not be described as Valve’s hand-picked shortlist. Valve says that this area is driven by what players spend time and money on, rather than Valve curation. Its current Steamworks visibility documentation describes personalized visibility alongside other routes, including new-release visibility, tags, and Curators.

Personalized visibility is one mechanism, not the whole store

Steam’s personalized placements are intended to reflect player behavior, so what a player sees can differ from what another player sees. That is a different kind of curation from a staff-selected list: the signal comes from player activity and personalization rather than a single editorial judgment. This can make the store useful when you want recommendations that respond to your interests, but it does not establish that every recommendation will be a good fit or that the system is a measure of quality.

Steam also offers discovery through new-release queues and Curators. A queue can expose releases through a dedicated route, while Curators provide recommendations from accounts that users may choose to follow. Those paths should not be collapsed into one “Steam algorithm.” They have different inputs and purposes, and a player who finds one route unhelpful can still try another.

What Steam tags do

Tags are not irrelevant to Steam discovery. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says tags affect browse placement and some similarity recommendations. The same documentation states that the top 20 tags determine eligibility for tag pages and similar browse views. That is a mechanism detail, not a performance statistic: it does not show how often a player finds a suitable game or whether tagged recommendations outperform another store’s approach. Read the current explanation in Valve’s Steamworks tag documentation.

There is a historical wrinkle worth keeping in view. Valve’s 2019 discussion of tags and the Interactive Recommender concerned that particular experimental model; it should not be generalized into a claim that tags never affect Steam discovery. Current documentation describes tag effects on browsing and some recommendations, while Valve separately describes personalized visibility and other features. The accurate description is that Steam has multiple mechanisms, not one universal recommendation rule.

Which store should you start with for your kind of discovery?

Choose the route that matches the signal you trust most. A catalog gate, an editorial highlight, a community collection, a tag page, and a personalized suggestion each help solve a different problem.

Choose GOG when selection at the catalog level matters most

Start with GOG if you want a store that explicitly says it chooses the games it carries, then narrow the indie category with its available filters. This is the most direct match for readers who use “curation” to mean a storewide selection policy. Do not extend that conclusion into a claim that GOG is independently quality-certified or that its catalog will contain every game you might want.

Choose itch.io when you want people and communities to point you somewhere unexpected

Start with itch.io if staff picks, user collections, and niche browsing sound more useful than a single personalized feed. Use collections and browse tags to follow a theme or a point of view, and treat editorial highlights as one curated route rather than a description of the entire platform. For searches by topic, browse tags; for a known title, use search with the platform’s indexing caveat in mind.

Choose Steam when you want several paths and personalization

Start with Steam if you want player-informed suggestions alongside tags, a new-release route, and Curators. When recommendations are not useful, switch the input: explore tags for a defined genre or theme, consult Curators whose interests align with yours, or use the new-release route to look beyond the personalized capsule. The advantage here is variety of discovery mechanisms, not evidence of superior recommendation accuracy.

How can you use all three stores without confusing their signals?

A practical multi-store search works best when each platform has a distinct job. This avoids treating every result as though it had been selected in the same way, and gives you more than one route when a particular store’s discovery signal misses your interests.

  1. Set the constraint first. Decide whether you care most about a store’s selection policy, human recommendations, niche browsing, personalized suggestions, or download and backup preferences. That decision determines which signal to prioritize.
  2. On Steam, explore beyond the main capsule. Try relevant tags, the new-release route, or Curators as separate discovery paths. Do not treat the personalized capsule as a Valve editorial list.
  3. On itch.io, browse by topic and point of view. Use browse tags for a niche and collections or staff highlights for human-led discovery. If a specific project does not appear in search, remember that publishing and indexing are distinct.
  4. On GOG, start at the indie category and refine. Use the available genre, tag, and operating-system filters to make the selected catalog more relevant to your needs.
  5. Interpret each result according to its source. A store’s catalog inclusion, a staff highlight, a user collection, a tag match, and a personalized suggestion are not interchangeable endorsements. Use them to find candidates, then decide whether each game suits you.

What can’t this comparison establish?

There is no verified, like-for-like figure here for discovery success, average indie-game quality, or current catalog size across Steam, itch.io, and GOG. Without comparable measurements, a percentage, universal winner, or claim that one store’s recommendations are more accurate would overstate what is known. The recommendations in this guide follow the documented mechanisms and the reader priorities they serve; they are not controlled-test results.

The evidence also differs in age and scope. Steam’s visibility and tag documentation, itch.io’s indexing guidance, and GOG’s live indie category support current descriptions of those mechanisms. itch.io’s detailed editorial account is from 2018, and it should not be used to promise a present-day homepage layout or a current count of staff picks. This is why the strongest conclusion is criterion-specific: the stores make different kinds of curation available, rather than demonstrably competing on one shared quality scale.

How we picked

The comparison separates catalog selection, editorial and community discovery, and personalized or tag-based discovery. GOG is the pick for an explicit catalog gate; itch.io is the pick for documented staff and user-curated routes; Steam is the pick for its range of documented recommendation and browsing mechanisms. The ranking follows those criteria and does not claim a measured cross-store winner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tags matter for Steam browse pages?

Valve’s Steamworks documentation says the top 20 tags determine eligibility for tag pages and similar browse views. That figure describes a placement rule, not how many tags a player should use or how effective tag-based discovery is.

Does a GOG Dreamlist vote guarantee a game will be released there?

No. GOG says Dreamlist votes communicate player interest but cannot guarantee a release. A vote is a signal to the store, not a promise that a publisher or developer will bring a game to GOG: GOG Dreamlist.

Is Steam’s Interactive Recommender the same as its current store recommendations?

Not necessarily. Valve’s 2019 statement about tags and the Interactive Recommender referred to that particular experimental model; it should not be read as a description of every current Steam discovery feature.
