PlayStation Plus does not give every game the same kind of license. A monthly game added to your library during its offer is available while your membership is active; a game downloaded from the Extra or Premium catalog also has to remain in that catalog and be included in your tier. A download alone does not make a rotating catalog game yours to keep.
For US PlayStation Plus rules checked October 30, 2026, the key is to separate three things: the game’s offer or removal date, your membership’s paid-through date, and the location of your save. Each answers a different question about access.

What kind of PlayStation Plus license does a game have?
Start by identifying how the game entered your account. The label “PlayStation Plus game” can refer to a monthly game you claimed, a rotating catalog title, or a game you purchased with a Plus discount. Those routes do not share the same access rules.
| Access path | What you need | What can end access | Save consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly game added to your library | An active Plus membership and a library addition made during the game’s offer | Your paid membership ends; a later monthly lineup does not by itself remove a game already added | A downloaded game’s save is a separate local file; online-storage access is a Plus benefit |
| Extra Game Catalog download | Active Extra or Premium membership, and the title must still be in the catalog | Your membership ends, your tier no longer includes it, or the title leaves the catalog | Keep a local save if you may want to resume later; buying an available title is a separate access route |
| Premium Classics Catalog title | Active Premium membership and the title’s continued availability | Your membership or tier changes, or the title is removed | Check whether that specific game was downloaded or streamed to know where its save is stored |
| Purchased game or compatible disc edition | The applicable purchase or disc, the right account, and compatible hardware | A Plus catalog removal date does not govern a purchase; a disc must be inserted to play the disc edition | Save compatibility can vary by game and edition |
A PlayStation Plus discounted purchase is still a purchase: PlayStation says the customer retains discounted games after the subscription ends. That is different from a catalog download, for which the membership and the title’s catalog status remain relevant.

Does downloading a catalog game let you keep it?
No. Downloading an Extra or Premium catalog game lets you install and play it while the entitlement conditions are met; it does not preserve access if the title leaves the service. Monthly games work differently: add them to your library while they are offered, and PlayStation says you can download and play them with an active membership.
Monthly games: add them during the offer
For a monthly game, the important action is adding it to your account’s library before the offer ends. Merely seeing it in the monthly lineup, or downloading it without completing the library claim as required, should not be treated as proof that the game was added. Once added, it is not the same as a time-limited catalog download—but you still need an active Plus membership to play it.
Catalog games: check both tier and availability
Extra and Premium catalog games rotate. Extra includes access to its Game Catalog, while Premium is required for Premium Classics Catalog titles; the game must also remain available in the relevant catalog. A game can therefore stop being playable even though it is still installed on your console and your subscription has not expired.
PlayStation’s May 23, 2022 service FAQ says downloaded Extra and Premium catalog games require a PlayStation Network connection every seven days for validation. That dated vendor guidance is not a promise of indefinite offline play, and the same FAQ says this particular check does not apply to Essential monthly downloadable games. Treat it as published guidance, not an independently measured result.
Which dates should I check?
There are three separate dates to keep straight: the window to add a monthly game to your library, the date your paid membership ends or renews, and a catalog title’s removal date. None substitutes for the others.

- Monthly offer window: This tells you when you can add a monthly game to your library. PlayStation’s current product page says games update monthly; use current announcements to check a specific offer rather than assuming an exact start or end hour.
- Paid-through or next-payment date: This is the account date that helps determine when membership benefits stop or a downgrade takes effect. Check it under Subscription Management.
- Catalog removal date: This applies to a rotating catalog title. Check current title availability in PlayStation’s catalog or announcements; do not infer it from a license screen or your renewal date.
PlayStation’s US Plus page says that from January 2026, PS4 games are added only intermittently. That describes the cadence for new PS4 additions, not an automatic expiry date for a monthly game already added to your library.

What happens when you cancel or downgrade Plus?
Canceling stops the next renewal; it does not normally end benefits immediately. PlayStation says benefits continue through the paid period, and its cancellation guidance says access to Plus benefits—including monthly games, online storage, and online multiplayer—is lost once the subscription ends.
Canceling renewal
Check Subscription Management for the account’s next payment or paid-through date. If you cancel before that date, you can continue using the membership benefits through the end of the period you paid for. When that period ends, Plus-dependent game access and online-storage access end. A local save file is a different thing from permission to launch a Plus game.
Moving to a lower tier
A downgrade is not the same as a catalog removal or immediate cancellation. PlayStation says the lower tier takes effect on the next payment date; higher-tier benefits remain until then. After the change, check whether each game still fits the tier you have: a Premium Classics title, for example, requires Premium.
PlayStation’s current US guidance establishes that online-storage access ends when membership ends, but it does not establish a fixed retention period for cloud saves after a lapse. Do not plan around an assumed number of days in which a cloud-only save will remain recoverable.

Why is a PlayStation Plus game locked?
A padlock does not prove that you need to buy the game. First establish which account and license route apply, then check membership, tier, and catalog status. Restore Licenses is a documented troubleshooting step only if the entitlement should still be valid; it cannot make an expired subscription or removed catalog title playable.
- Check the account and how the game was obtained. Sign in to the account that claimed the monthly game or bought the title. Check the relevant transaction or claim history. If it came from a catalog, treat it as a catalog entitlement rather than a permanent purchase.
- Check membership and tier. Confirm that the account’s membership is active and includes the required tier. Look separately at the next payment date; it is not a catalog removal date.
- Check current catalog availability. If the game came from Extra or Premium, confirm that it is still listed in the relevant catalog. A valid membership alone does not preserve access to a removed title.
- Check service and console-sharing settings. If the license should still be valid, check PlayStation Network service status and the console’s sharing settings before restoring licenses.
- Restore licenses if the entitlement should exist. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. PlayStation states, “Restoring licenses won’t affect your data.”
- Use a separate access route if the game has left. License restoration does not bypass catalog removal. If the title is available for purchase, buying it may provide a new entitlement; keep the existing save and check that the purchased version is compatible. For a disc edition, use compatible hardware and keep the disc inserted while playing.
Where are PlayStation game saves stored?
A downloaded game saves progress on the console. A streamed game stores progress in PlayStation’s game-streaming storage. Plus online storage can transfer progress between streaming and a downloaded version, but the transfer is a separate step—not automatic—and compatibility between editions should be checked for the particular title.
Back up or move a downloaded game save
On PS5, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4) and use the upload or download controls. PS5 saves have an auto-sync setting; PS4 saves use auto-upload when configured. A PS4 save in cloud storage must be downloaded manually to PS5 console storage before local PS5 use.
On PS4, PlayStation documents automatic uploads from a primary PS4 when configured. The manual route is Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage. Confirm the intended save has uploaded before deleting or replacing its local copy.
Move progress from a streamed game to a download
Use PlayStation’s save-transfer process to copy the streamed game’s save into Plus online storage, then download it to the console for use with the installed game. A streamed save does not simply appear in the local install because the game was downloaded. Check the title and edition before assuming the two versions can use the same save.

Keep a save if a catalog game leaves
If you have a downloaded game, preserve its local save even if the catalog entitlement ends. PlayStation says that purchasing an available title can allow access to that save again, but that does not guarantee compatibility across every edition or version. Keep a backup before changing, deleting, or overwriting save data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What backup options are available on PS4 and PS5?
Plus online storage and USB backup are not interchangeable. PlayStation’s storage guidance provides up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Its PS5 storage table allows a USB drive for PS4 saved data but not for PS5 saved-data storage.
| Save type | PlayStation Plus online storage | USB-drive saved-data storage |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 saves | Up to 100 GB | Not available as a PS5 saved-data backup option in PlayStation’s table |
| PS4 saves | Up to 100 GB; 1,000-file limit | Supported by PlayStation’s documented storage options |
A USB flash drive used as a PS4 game-save backup is not a direct way to back up PS5 saves. An M.2 SSD can expand space for installed games, but it does not preserve a license to a removed title or substitute for cloud-save storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat happens to DLC and add-ons when a catalog game leaves?
For a downloaded catalog game, PlayStation says purchased DLC or add-ons cannot be used with that game after the membership expires or the game is removed from the catalog. They become usable again if you resubscribe or purchase the title. This affects access to the add-on in that game, not whether the DLC purchase itself was erased. PlayStation says add-ons are not supported when streaming a title.
Do these rules apply in every country?
The instructions and tier examples here use PlayStation’s US pages. Plus benefits and catalog access can vary by region, console, device, and tier, so check the local PlayStation catalog and account settings before applying a US availability claim elsewhere. In particular, do not assume that US Premium streaming availability describes every market.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are PS Plus games mine to keep after I cancel?
A Plus-discounted game you purchased remains yours, according to PlayStation. A monthly game added to your library is different: the Plus entitlement requires an active membership, so canceling renewal does not make it a permanent purchase.
Does the January 2026 PS4-games change remove games I already claimed?
PlayStation says PS4 games will be added to Plus only intermittently from January 2026. That is about the rate of new additions; it is not a statement that previously claimed monthly games are removed on that date.

Can I use catalog-game DLC if I buy the game later?
PlayStation says purchased add-ons for a downloaded catalog game become usable again if you purchase the game or resubscribe, subject to access to the game itself. Streaming a title does not support its add-ons.
Can a PS4 save move to a PS5 version of the same game?
It depends on the specific game and edition; the fact that both versions share a title does not establish save compatibility. Verify the game’s own transfer or compatibility guidance before relying on a save move.
