When I Follow Someone on TikTok It Automatically Unfollows?

If TikTok unfollows someone right after you tap Follow, it usually means the app failed to save the action, your account hit a temporary limit, or TikTok blocked the follow because it looked unusual. In some cases, the other account’s privacy settings, a block, or account removal can also make it seem like your follow disappeared instantly.

This issue can happen once because of a simple app glitch, but repeated automatic unfollowing may point to rate limits, account restrictions, suspicious activity detection, or even a security problem on your account. The good news is that most causes can be checked with a few practical steps, such as updating the app, slowing down follow activity, checking account status, and reviewing login security.

Why TikTok Automatically Unfollows Someone After You Follow Them

If TikTok shows that you followed someone and then immediately changes back to “Follow,” the app is usually failing to save the action or reversing it because of a rule, restriction, or account-state change. In some cases, the follow never fully reaches TikTok’s servers. In others, TikTok accepts it for a moment, then removes it after checking your account activity, the other person’s settings, or platform safety signals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The simplest cause is an app or connection glitch. TikTok relies on a live sync between your device and its servers, so a weak connection, outdated app version, corrupted cache, or temporary server issue can make the button appear to work before it resets. This is especially common if the profile page loads slowly, your Following count does not update, or the same issue happens only for a short period and then stops on its own.

TikTok may also undo follows when your activity looks automated or unusually fast. If you follow many accounts in a short time, repeatedly follow and unfollow, or interact heavily after creating a new account, TikTok can treat the behavior as spam-like. The platform does not publish exact follow limits, and they can vary by account age, trust level, and recent activity. When a limit or temporary restriction is triggered, tapping “Follow” may do nothing, or the follow may disappear seconds or minutes later.

The issue can also be tied to the account you are trying to follow. If the user has a private account, your tap may send a follow request rather than create an immediate follow. If they decline the request, remove you as a follower, block you, change their username, deactivate the account, or TikTok removes the account, it can look like TikTok automatically unfollowed them. A block is especially likely if you can no longer view the profile normally, see their videos, or find them through search from your account while others can.

Account-level restrictions are another common . TikTok can temporarily limit actions after suspicious logins, community guideline violations, age-related settings, bot-like behavior, or repeated failed interactions. During this period, follows, likes, comments, or messages may not stick. If your account has been restricted, you may notice the same problem across many profiles instead of just one person.

There is also a security angle to consider. If someone else has access to your TikTok account, they could be unfollowing accounts manually, using a connected third-party service, or causing suspicious activity that triggers TikTok’s anti-spam systems. This is more likely if your following list changes without you using the app, you see unfamiliar devices in your security settings, or you receive login alerts you do not recognize.

To narrow down the cause, test whether the problem happens with one profile or every profile, wait a few hours before following again, update TikTok, clear the app cache, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and check your inbox for account warnings. If the follow only fails for one user, privacy settings, a block, or a removed account may be involved. If it fails for everyone, focus on app issues, temporary follow limits, account restrictions, or possible unauthorized access.

Common Causes: Glitches, Limits, and Account Restrictions

If TikTok appears to unfollow an account immediately after you tap Follow, the cause is usually one of a few practical issues: the app did not save the action correctly, TikTok temporarily limited your follow activity, your account has a restriction, or the profile you are trying to follow cannot currently accept the follow in the normal way. The button may briefly change to “Following,” then switch back to “Follow,” or the account may disappear from your Following list after you refresh the app.

App glitches and sync delays

A simple app glitch is one of the most common s. TikTok relies on a live connection between your phone and its servers, so a weak connection, cached app data, or an outdated app version can cause the Follow button to show the wrong state. In some cases, the follow request may go through on TikTok’s server, but your app interface does not update correctly until you restart the app. In other cases, the app shows “Following” for a second even though the action failed to save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is more likely if other actions also feel delayed, such as likes not sticking, comments failing to post, or videos not loading properly. Switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data, force closing TikTok, updating the app, or clearing the app cache can help confirm whether the issue is only a temporary display or connection problem.

Follow limits and spam detection

TikTok may also stop new follows if your activity looks automated or unusually fast. For example, if you follow many accounts in a short period, repeatedly tap Follow and Unfollow, or use third-party growth tools, TikTok may temporarily block additional follows. When this happens, the app may not always show a clear error message. Instead, it may look like TikTok lets you follow someone and then automatically removes the follow moments later.

  • Too many follows too quickly: Rapidly following accounts can trigger anti-spam systems.
  • Repeated follow/unfollow behavior: TikTok may treat this as suspicious engagement manipulation.
  • New or low-trust accounts: Newly created accounts may face stricter activity limits.
  • Third-party apps: Tools that promise followers, automation, or analytics can cause unusual account activity.

Account restrictions and trust issues

Your account may also have a temporary restriction if TikTok detected activity that violates its rules or appears risky. This can include suspicious logins, spam-like behavior, previous community guideline violations, or actions performed from mulle devices and locations in a short time. Restrictions can affect follows, likes, comments, direct messages, and profile edits. Sometimes these limits expire automatically after a waiting period, but repeated behavior can extend the restriction.

The issue can also be connected to the account you are trying to follow. If the user has a private account, your tap may create a follow request rather than an instant follow. If they decline the request, remove you as a follower, block you, deactivate their account, or TikTok removes the account for violations, it can look like you were automatically unfollowed. A private profile may show “Requested” at first, then return to “Follow” if the request is rejected or canceled. If you are blocked, you may not be able to view or follow the account normally at all.

Quick ways to narrow down the cause

  • Try following a different public account and check whether the same thing happens.
  • Refresh the profile, close TikTok, reopen it, and check your Following list again.
  • Stop following new accounts for several hours if you recently followed many users.
  • Check for app updates and clear TikTok’s cache from the app settings.
  • Review your account notifications for warnings, restrictions, or security alerts.
  • Log out of unknown devices and remove any connected third-party services.

How TikTok’s Spam Detection and Follow Limits Work

TikTok monitors follow activity to reduce spam, bot behavior, fake engagement, and aggressive growth tactics. If you tap Follow and the account changes back to Follow shortly after, TikTok may not be saving the action because your recent behavior looks automated or unusually fast. This can happen even if you are a real user, especially after following many accounts in a short period, repeatedly following and unfollowing, or using TikTok in a way that triggers automated safety checks.

There is no public, fixed follow limit that applies to every account in the same way. Limits can vary based on account age, previous activity, device trust, login history, region, and whether TikTok has detected unusual behavior. A new account that follows dozens of people quickly may be restricted sooner than an older account with a normal activity pattern. Similarly, an account that has recently logged in from a new phone, VPN, emulator, or different country may face stricter temporary checks.

Follow behavior that can trigger restrictions

  • Following too many accounts too quickly: Rapidly tapping Follow on many profiles can look like bot activity.
  • Repeated follow-unfollow actions: Switching the same accounts on and off may be treated as engagement manipulation.
  • Using automation tools: Third-party apps, browser scripts, or growth services can cause TikTok to block follow actions.
  • New or low-trust accounts: Accounts with little history may have tighter limits until they build normal usage patterns.
  • Suspicious login patterns: Frequent device changes, VPN use, or logins from distant locations may trigger extra protection.

When TikTok applies a temporary follow restriction, the app may not always show a clear error message. In some cases, the button appears to work at first, then reverses after you refresh the profile, reopen the app, or check your following list. This is automatic unfollowing can feel like a bug when it is actually TikTok rejecting the follow request on the server side. You may also notice related signs, such as comments not posting, likes disappearing, or messages failing to send.

The best way to confirm whether a follow limit is involved is to slow down and test carefully. Stop following new accounts for several hours, then try following one public account and refresh the profile. If it stays followed, your account was likely under a temporary limit. If it immediately unfollows every account, even after waiting 24 hours, the issue may involve account restrictions, app problems, privacy settings, or security concerns. Avoid using third-party “followers,” “analytics,” or “auto-follow” services during this time, because they can extend restrictions or put your account at risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reduce the chance of triggering TikTok’s spam detection again, follow accounts at a normal pace, interact naturally with videos, and keep your login activity consistent. If you use a VPN, try turning it off before testing follow actions. Also make sure your app is updated and your phone’s date and time are set automatically, since unusual device signals can sometimes affect account trust. Most temporary limits clear on their own, but repeated spam-like behavior can lead to longer restrictions or broader account penalties.

Account Privacy, Blocks, and Removed Accounts

Sometimes TikTok is not actually “undoing” your follow because of a bug or limit. The account you are trying to follow may have a privacy, blocking, or availability status that prevents the follow from sticking. This can feel confusing because the Follow button may briefly change after you tap it, then return to Follow when you refresh the profile, reopen the app, or check your Following list.

Private accounts may require approval

If the profile is private, tapping Follow usually sends a follow request instead of immediately adding the account to your Following list. Depending on the app screen, TikTok may show Requested, or it may appear as if the follow did not complete after you leave the profile. The account owner has to approve the request before you can follow them and view their private videos. If they decline the request, delete it, or do not respond, you will not appear as a follower.

To confirm this, revisit the profile and look for a Requested label. You can also check whether the account has a lock icon or limited visible content. If you can see only a small number of public posts, no reposts, or a message indicating the account is private, the follow may be pending rather than removed. In that case, there is usually nothing to fix on your side unless your request keeps disappearing instantly across mulle private accounts.

Blocks can make follows fail or disappear

If someone has blocked you, TikTok may prevent you from following them, viewing their content normally, messaging them, or finding them through search. In some cases, you might still reach the profile from an old comment, shared link, notification, or cached result, but the follow action will not remain active. You may tap Follow and see a temporary change, only for the button to reset shortly after.

  • You may be blocked if the profile shows little or no content even though other people can see videos from the same account.
  • You may have blocked them by mistake, which can also interfere with following or interacting with the account.
  • Mutual privacy settings, such as restricted comments, messages, or profile visibility, can make the account seem partially accessible but still limit actions.

Check your own block list by going to TikTok settings, opening Privacy, and reviewing Blocked accounts. If the person is listed there, unblock them and try following again after restarting the app. If they blocked you, there is no legitimate setting that can force the follow through; you will need to respect the restriction.

Deleted, banned, or deactivated accounts cannot be followed

A follow can also fail when the target account has been removed, temporarily suspended, banned, or deactivated. TikTok search results, profile links, comments, duets, stitches, and old notifications can remain visible for a short time even after an account is no longer fully active. When you tap Follow, the app may accept the tap on the front end, then reject it once TikTok checks the account status on its servers.

Signs of a removed or unavailable account include a blank profile photo, missing username, zero visible videos, an error when opening the page, or a message such as “Account not found” or “Couldn’t find this account.” You can test this by asking a friend to search for the same username from their own TikTok account. If neither of you can follow it, the issue is likely with that profile rather than your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If automatic unfollowing only happens with one specific account, focus on privacy, blocks, and account availability before troubleshooting your app. If it happens with many unrelated accounts, the cause is more likely tied to your app cache, follow activity, account trust status, or TikTok’s anti-spam systems.

Troubleshooting Steps to Fix Automatic Unfollowing

If TikTok keeps removing a follow right after you tap Follow, start by checking whether the problem is temporary, account-specific, or caused by your device. A quick test is to follow one different public account, close TikTok, reopen it, and look at your Following list. If the new follow stays, the issue may be related to the original account’s privacy settings, block status, deletion, or TikTok review status. If every account unfollows immediately, focus on your app, network, account limits, or security.

  1. Refresh and retest: Pull down to refresh the profile page, then leave the profile and return to it. Sometimes the button visually changes back to Follow because the app has not synced correctly, even though the account appears in your Following list.
  2. Check your Following list: Go to your profile, tap Following, and search for the username. This confirms whether TikTok actually removed the follow or whether the profile button is displaying incorrectly.
  3. Restart the app: Fully close TikTok from your recent apps screen, then reopen it. On iPhone, swipe it away from the app switcher. On Android, use the recent apps screen or force stop it from app settings.
  4. Update TikTok: Open the App Store or Google Play Store and install any available TikTok update. Follow-button bugs are often fixed through app updates.
  5. Clear the cache: In TikTok, go to Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Free up space, then clear the cache. On Android, you can also clear cache through the phone’s app settings.

Next, rule out connection and device issues. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try following again. If you use a VPN, proxy, private DNS, ad blocker, or network filtering app, disable it temporarily because unusual routing can make TikTok treat your actions as suspicious or fail to save them. Also make sure your phone’s date and time are set automatically, since incorrect system time can interfere with app sessions and authentication.

If you have followed many accounts recently, stop trying for a while. Repeatedly tapping Follow after TikTok rejects the action can extend the restriction or trigger more spam checks. Wait at least a few hours, and in stricter cases wait 24 to 48 hours before testing again. During that time, avoid mass liking, commenting, messaging, or following from mulle devices. When you return, follow only one or two accounts and confirm they remain in your Following list before continuing.

Account checks that can reveal the cause

  • Try the same account from another device: Log in on a trusted phone or tablet and test one follow. If it works there, your original app installation or device settings may be the issue.
  • Ask a friend to view the profile: If they cannot find or follow the account either, the account may be private, restricted, banned, renamed, or removed.
  • Check for blocks: If the profile disappears, shows limited content, or the follow never sticks only for that user, they may have blocked you or changed their privacy settings.
  • Review logged-in devices: Go to Settings and privacy > Security > Manage devices and remove sessions you do not recognize.
  • Change your password: If follows appear and disappear without your action, secure the account and enable two-step verification.

If none of these steps fix it, report the issue inside TikTok. Go to Settings and privacy > Report a problem > Follow/Like/Comment > Follow, then describe that accounts automatically unfollow after you tap Follow. Include the username affected, when it started, whether it happens on Wi-Fi and mobile data, and the troubleshooting you already tried. This gives TikTok Support enough detail to separate a bug from a temporary account restriction.

When to Secure Your Account or Contact TikTok Support

If TikTok keeps unfollowing accounts even after you have updated the app, cleared the cache, slowed down your follow activity, and tested on a stable connection, the issue may be tied to account security or an account-level restriction. This is especially likely if the problem happens across mulle devices or networks, or if your follows disappear hours later instead of immediately after tapping Follow.

Secure your account first if you notice signs that someone else may be using it. These can include followed accounts you do not recognize, direct messages you did not send, videos you did not like, login alerts from unfamiliar locations, or profile changes you did not make. Unauthorized access can trigger suspicious activity systems, and TikTok may limit actions such as following, commenting, or messaging while it evaluates the behavior.

Security checks to do before contacting support

  • Change your password: Use a new password that you do not use on any other app or website.
  • Review logged-in devices: Go to TikTok’s security settings and remove any device or session you do not recognize.
  • Enable two-step verification: Add SMS, email, or an authenticator method so a password alone cannot access your account.
  • Check linked accounts: Review connected phone numbers, emails, Apple, Google, Facebook, or other login methods and remove anything unfamiliar.
  • Remove suspicious third-party tools: Uninstall follower trackers, automation apps, “growth” services, or browser extensions connected to TikTok. These tools can cause follow actions to be reversed or restricted.

You should contact TikTok Support if the automatic unfollowing continues after your account is secured and you have waited at least 24 to 48 hours without heavy follow activity. Support is also the right option if you see an error message, cannot follow anyone at all, believe your account was incorrectly limited, or suspect a bug affecting only your profile. In the app, go to Profile, open the Menu, choose Settings and privacy, then use Report a problem. Select the closest category related to following, account restrictions, or account security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When reporting the issue, include specific details rather than a general complaint. Mention when the problem started, whether it happens with every account or only certain profiles, whether the Follow button changes back immediately, and what troubleshooting steps you already tried. If possible, attach a screen recording showing you tapping Follow and the account being unfollowed. Clear evidence helps TikTok separate a normal privacy or rate-limit issue from a technical bug or account restriction that needs review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does TikTok unfollow someone right after I tap Follow?

This usually happens because TikTok did not successfully save the follow action. Common causes include a temporary app glitch, poor connection, following too many accounts too quickly, or TikTok flagging the activity as spam-like. It can also happen if the account is private, blocked you, was removed, or has restrictions on who can follow it.

How long does a TikTok follow limit last?

Most temporary follow limits last from a few hours to 24 hours, but stricter limits can last longer if TikTok detects repeated rapid following. During this time, you may see follows instantly disappear or fail silently without an error message. Stop following new accounts for a day, then try again slowly.

Can someone’s privacy settings make TikTok automatically unfollow them?

Yes, privacy and account status can affect whether your follow sticks. If an account is private, your follow may become a pending request instead of a normal follow, and if the user declines it, you will no longer be following them. If they blocked you, restricted interactions, deleted the account, or TikTok removed it, the follow may disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I try first if TikTok keeps removing my follows?

Start by closing and reopening the app, checking your internet connection, and updating TikTok from the App Store or Google Play. Then clear the app cache, log out and back in, and test following one account only. If that works, the issue was likely temporary or related to app data.

Should I be worried that my TikTok account was hacked?

You should check your account security if follows, unfollows, likes, or messages are happening without your action. Change your password, remove unknown logged-in devices, enable two-step verification, and check that your email and phone number are correct. If the problem continues after securing the account, report it through TikTok’s support tools.

Bottom Line

If TikTok unfollows someone right after you tap Follow, it’s usually caused by a temporary app glitch, follow limit, account restriction, privacy setting, or suspicious activity check. Start with the basics: refresh the app, update TikTok, clear the cache, and try again after waiting a few hours.

If the issue keeps happening, test whether it affects one account or every account, check your security settings, change your password, and avoid rapid follow/unfollow activity. When nothing fixes it, report the problem to TikTok with screenshots so support can review whether your account has a restriction or bug.
