To protect WhatsApp chats in 2026, create a cloud backup before changing phones, then restore it during WhatsApp’s first-time setup with the same phone number and the same cloud account. Android uses a Google Account and iPhone uses iCloud. If you enable end-to-end encrypted backups, also preserve the passkey, password or 64-digit key: WhatsApp cannot recover a lost credential. This guide covers setup, restoration, Android–iPhone moves, encryption and practical fixes for failed or stuck backups.
What do I need before backing up WhatsApp chats?
Prepare the account, storage and connection that WhatsApp’s cloud workflow requires. A backup can fail before it starts if any of these prerequisites is missing.

- Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection, keep the phone powered, and avoid changing networks while WhatsApp is uploading or restoring.
- Update WhatsApp and the phone’s operating system. On Android, update Google Play services as well.
- Make a manual backup immediately before moving to another phone so the newest messages have a restore point.
Videos are optional in the WhatsApp backup. Including them preserves more media but increases the backup’s size, upload time and data use.
How do I back up WhatsApp on Android?
Android chat backups are stored in the Google Account you select. The backup is associated with both that account and your WhatsApp phone number, so record which account you use.

Set up an automatic or manual Android backup
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Tap Back up to your Google Account and choose the Google Account that should store the copy.
- Choose a schedule: Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or manual backup only.
- Decide whether to include videos. Leave videos out if storage or upload bandwidth is limited.
- Tap Back up to create the first copy. Wait for the completion time or confirmation to update before closing WhatsApp.
A scheduled backup protects against routine phone loss, while a manual backup is the important final step before a reset or phone change. Google Account storage limits can stop future uploads. WhatsApp also says a backup that has not been updated for five months might be automatically deleted, and each new backup replaces the previous one rather than creating an unlimited history of versions.
How do I back up WhatsApp on an iPhone?
On iPhone, WhatsApp writes the chat backup to iCloud. iCloud Drive must be active and WhatsApp must be permitted to use it.
Enable iCloud and create the backup
- Open iPhone Settings, sign in to iCloud and turn on iCloud Drive.
- In the iCloud Drive app list, allow WhatsApp.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now for an immediate copy, or tap Auto Backup and select a recurring schedule.
- Leave the phone on a stable connection and powered until the upload finishes.
WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance says free iCloud storage should be at least 2.05 times the backup size for backup or restore operations. For example, a 4 GB WhatsApp backup needs about 8.2 GB of free iCloud space under that guidance. The extra headroom is for the operation itself, not an additional copy that you can browse in WhatsApp.
What is the difference between Android and iPhone WhatsApp backups?
The cloud destination and the account that authorizes a restore differ by platform. The core rule is the same: the phone number and cloud account must match the backup that was created.
| Item | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud destination | Selected Google Account | iCloud account with iCloud Drive |
| Backup path | WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup | WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup |
| Immediate backup control | Back up | Back Up Now |
| Recurring schedules | Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or manual | Auto Backup with a recurring schedule |
| Account required for restore | The same Google Account used to create the backup | The same iCloud/Apple account used to create the backup |
| Storage qualification | Google Account and device storage must be sufficient | WhatsApp advises free iCloud space of at least 2.05 times the backup size |
| When restore appears | During initial setup after installing or reinstalling WhatsApp | During initial setup after installing or reinstalling WhatsApp |
| Encrypted-backup credential | A passkey, password or generated 64-digit key; WhatsApp cannot recover a lost credential | |
Cloud backups are platform-specific in the documented workflow. A Google Account backup is not presented as a direct iPhone restore, and an iCloud backup is not presented as a direct Android restore. Cross-platform moves therefore need a supported transfer flow rather than simply signing in to the other platform’s cloud service.

How do I restore WhatsApp messages on a new or reset phone?
Restore is offered during WhatsApp’s initial setup, not from the Chat Backup settings page. Install or reinstall WhatsApp, verify the original number, sign in to the cloud account containing the backup, and accept the restore prompt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- On the new or reset phone, install WhatsApp from the device’s app store. If WhatsApp was already configured, uninstall and reinstall it so the initial setup flow appears.
- Open WhatsApp and enter the same phone number used when the backup was made.
- When prompted, sign in to the same Google Account on Android or the same iCloud/Apple account on iPhone.
- Approve the detected backup and tap the restore control shown during setup.
- Keep the phone connected to a stable network and power while chats and media are restored. Larger backups, especially those containing videos, take longer.
The Chat Backup screen contains backup controls; it does not contain a separate Restore button. If you finish setup without restoring, the documented recovery path is to reinstall WhatsApp and repeat setup so the restore prompt can appear.
“Unfortunately, we can’t restore your chats for you because your chat history isn’t stored on our servers.” — WhatsApp Help Center, “Can’t back up or restore your chat history.”
This explains why WhatsApp support cannot simply send a missing history back to a device: recovery depends on the cloud copy, matching account and number, and a usable backup.
Can I transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone?
Do not expect a Google Account backup to restore directly on an iPhone, or an iCloud backup to restore directly on Android. The backup instructions above describe same-platform cloud restoration; a cross-platform move must use a WhatsApp-supported transfer flow for the specific devices and versions involved.

Plan a cross-platform move safely
- Create a final backup on the old phone before beginning, even if you will use a device-to-device transfer.
- Keep the original phone available until chats are visible on the new phone; do not erase it immediately after starting the move.
- Use the same WhatsApp number on the destination account unless the supported transfer procedure explicitly handles a number change.
- Follow the transfer instructions shown for the current Android and iPhone versions. Menu wording and availability can change, so do not substitute a cloud restore from the other platform.
- After the move, create a new backup in the destination platform’s cloud service and verify its timestamp.
The cited backup documentation does not establish that a Google Drive/Google Account copy can be imported directly into iCloud or that an iCloud copy can be imported directly into a Google Account. Treat any claim of universal one-click cloud conversion with caution.
How do I encrypt my WhatsApp cloud backup?
End-to-end encrypted backup is an optional layer for the copy stored on Google Drive or iCloud. Turn it on from WhatsApp’s Chat Backup settings and create a credential you can preserve independently of the phone.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Tap End-to-end encrypted backup.
- Choose a protection method: a device-supported passkey, a password, or a generated 64-digit encryption key.
- Complete the verification requested by WhatsApp and confirm that encryption is enabled.
- Store the passkey or key in a reputable password manager or another secure system before relying on the encrypted copy.
What each credential option means
- Passkey: On supported devices, authentication can use a fingerprint, face recognition or the device screen lock.
- Password: You create and must remember a separate password for the encrypted backup.
- 64-digit key: WhatsApp generates a long key that must be copied and protected exactly.
WhatsApp says it cannot send you a copy, reset the credential or restore the encrypted backup if the password or key is lost. A backup that is secure against cloud access is also inaccessible to you without its credential, so test that your password manager or other secure storage can retrieve it before changing phones.
Meta announced passkey-encrypted backups on October 29, 2025. Availability and the exact menu wording can continue to change by device, operating-system version and rollout stage.

Most failures come from account mismatch, insufficient storage, unstable connectivity or an interrupted upload. Work through the checks in this order so you do not overwrite a usable copy unnecessarily.

1. Confirm the identity used by the backup
- Verify that the phone number in WhatsApp is the number associated with the original backup.
- On Android, check that the phone is signed in to the same Google Account selected under Chat backup.
- On iPhone, check that the same iCloud/Apple account and iCloud Drive are active.
2. Make room in both places that need it
- Free space on the phone itself; WhatsApp may need working room while preparing files.
- Free Google Account storage on Android or iCloud storage on iPhone.
- For iPhone operations, compare free iCloud space with 2.05 times the reported backup size.
- Exclude videos from the next backup if media size is the immediate constraint.
3. Stabilize the operation
- Switch to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Keep the phone connected to power and avoid moving between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Do not force-close WhatsApp while the progress indicator is active.
4. Update the software stack
Install the latest available WhatsApp and operating-system updates. On Android, update Google Play services as well, then retry the backup or reinstall-and-restore sequence.
5. Consider whether the cloud copy was replaced
Each new backup overwrites the previous one, and an older backup that was not updated for five months might be automatically deleted. If an upload was corrupted or incomplete, WhatsApp may be unable to recover it; a newer, damaged copy can also have replaced an older usable copy. Avoid repeatedly starting backups when storage or connectivity is failing, because every completed upload becomes the latest restore point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check before erasing the old phone?
Do not wipe the old device until the destination phone has restored the expected chats and you have created a fresh backup there.
- On the old phone, run a manual backup and wait for its completion time to update.
- Write down the Google Account or iCloud account used, the WhatsApp number, and the encrypted-backup credential if encryption is enabled.
- On the destination phone, complete setup and confirm that recent conversations, important media and group memberships appear.
- Open Chat Backup on the destination and verify that a new backup can be created in its platform cloud.
- Only then reset, trade in or delete WhatsApp from the old phone.
This sequence preserves a second chance if the first restoration is incomplete and avoids relying on a backup whose account or encryption credential you cannot identify.
Is an encrypted backup safer, and what is the trade-off?
Encryption adds protection to the cloud-stored backup, but it transfers recovery responsibility to you. Without the passkey, password or 64-digit key, WhatsApp cannot unlock the copy for you.

- Use it when: the chats contain sensitive personal, financial, work or health information and you can maintain secure credential storage.
- Plan carefully when: several people manage a device, a phone is frequently replaced, or no one has a reliable way to preserve the credential.
- Before enabling it: save the credential in a password manager or other secure system and verify that you can retrieve it.
Encryption does not remove the need for the correct phone number, cloud account, available storage and stable connection. It protects the backup’s contents; it does not repair a missing, overwritten or corrupted backup.
Which backup routine is sensible for 2026?
Choose a schedule that matches how often your conversations change, then add a manual checkpoint before every device move.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Daily: for active chats where losing a day of messages would matter.
- Weekly: for regular use with less frequent changes.
- Monthly: for occasional use where a larger gap is acceptable.
- Manual: as a deliberate checkpoint before reinstalling WhatsApp, resetting a phone or starting a transfer.
Regardless of schedule, review the cloud account and available storage periodically. Because WhatsApp keeps the newest cloud backup rather than a visible series of historical versions, a successful manual backup is the decisive point immediately before a move.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore WhatsApp without the old phone turned on?
Yes, if a complete cloud backup already exists and you can verify the same phone number and cloud account on the replacement phone. The old device is not the source of the cloud restore, but keeping it available until you verify the result is the safest practice.
Will my WhatsApp videos be restored if I did not include them in the backup?
No. Media excluded from the backup is not part of that restore point. Include videos in a future backup when preserving them is more important than reducing upload size and storage use.
What happens if I forget the password for an encrypted WhatsApp backup?
WhatsApp states that it cannot reset the password, provide a copy or restore that encrypted backup without the credential. Look for the saved passkey, password or 64-digit key in the secure system where you stored it.
Why does WhatsApp show no Restore option in Chat Backup?
That screen is for creating and scheduling backups. The restore prompt appears only during initial setup after WhatsApp is installed or reinstalled, after you verify the matching number and cloud account.
Can WhatsApp support retrieve chats that are not in my cloud backup?
No. WhatsApp says chat history is not stored on its servers for support to retrieve. Recovery therefore depends on a usable Google Account or iCloud backup and the credentials required to open it.
