For World of Warcraft: Forever on 4 November 2026, an active WoW subscription or Game Time is enough. You do not need a Forever edition unless you want the Skyborne race, the Zephras Isle starting experience, Early Name Reservation, cosmetics, or bundled extras. For modern Retail, called Midnight, you need both a Midnight license and active subscription or Game Time; buying Midnight does not replace the recurring access charge. Retail has a free trial through level 20, but Classic has no trial.
Those are three separate checks: the Battle.net login, the WoW license you selected, and the game client (Retail, Forever, or Classic). Reinstalling the client cannot supply a missing expansion or missing playtime.

What exactly do you need for World of Warcraft: Forever?
An active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time is the entire purchase required to play Forever at its 4 November launch. Blizzard’s shop says, “Your WoW subscription or game time grants you access to WoW: Forever starting November 4.” The official starter guide likewise states that Forever is included with an active subscription or Game Time.

You still need a Battle.net account, the Battle.net desktop app, the installed World of Warcraft client with Forever selected, a supported Windows or Mac computer, broadband internet, and a keyboard and mouse. Controller support is described as beta in Blizzard’s starter information. Forever’s launch moment is global: 4 November 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST.
What the subscription does not include
Subscription time grants access to the game; it does not grant premium Forever packs. The Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher is required only for the Skyborne race, the Zephras Isle starting questline and Early Name Reservation. Everything else in those packs is optional: mounts, outfits, toys, housing decorations for modern WoW, beta access that has already ended, Game Time, Warcraft III content or friend-invite codes.

Do you need a Forever edition to reserve a character name?
No active Game Time is required for Early Name Reservation, but an eligible pack on the correct WoW license is required. The reservation window runs 27 October through 3 November 2026, before launch, and allows up to three characters. Blizzard Customer Support states that playtime is needed when the game launches, not for the reservation itself.
Eligible purchases are the Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack, Warcraft Forever Collection, or the physical Collector’s Edition after its key is attached to your account. Regional opening times are Europe 27 October at 18:00 CET, North America 27 October at 1:00 p.m. PDT, Korea 28 October at 07:00 KST and Taiwan 28 October at 07:00 CST. Reservations are first-come, first-served on the WoW account that bought the pack, and a desired name is not guaranteed.

Forever uses a two-name system unique within a region. You can hide the secondary name under Options > Nameplates > My Secondary Name; it still appears in chat. A physical Collector’s Edition owner must redeem the included key before the reservation option appears. Applying that key also adds its included Game Time.

Which Forever upgrade pack is worth choosing?
Choose by the feature you actually need, not by the word “Epic.” All packs are upgrades around a game that your subscription already unlocks.
Skyborne Heroic Pack
The Battle.net shop listed this pack from $29.99. It adds the Skyborne race, the Zephras Isle level 1–12 starting experience, Early Name Reservation, the Cerulean Prideclaw ground mount (riding skill is still bought in-game), Shen’dorei Skyseer’s Garb, a Veteran Adventurer’s Rucksack, the Shen’dorei Windwell toy, Skyborne housing décor for modern WoW and one Invite-A-Friend launch code. It contains no Game Time and no beta access.
Skyborne Epic Pack
The Epic Pack includes Heroic contents, the closed Forever beta (17 September–21 October 2026), additional cosmetics, tabards and pets, three Invite-A-Friend codes in total, and 30 days of Game Time. The $59.99 / €59.99 figures were observed on the Battle.net shop on 7 October 2026. The 30 days are credited on 4 November at launch, not when you check out, so they do not cover reservation week unless another source of time is already active.
Warcraft Forever Collection
The Collection adds Warcraft III: Reforged, the Forsaken Kingdom campaign and Forsaken and Human figurine housing décor to the Epic contents. Shop observers commonly listed $79.99 / €79.99, and Blizzard’s stated sales end date is 11 January 2027. The campaign is also sold separately, so the Collection is for buyers who want it bundled with Forever extras.

Physical Collector’s Edition
The physical edition is sold through the Blizzard Gear Store while supplies last. Blizzard’s reviewed news page did not state a dollar price. Redeem the included digital key on the WoW license you will use for reservation and launch; the key supplies the included Game Time when applied.
None of the pack cosmetics work in WoW Classic. Housing décor requires Midnight because Housing is a modern Retail feature. Invite-A-Friend codes are valid only during the 4–11 November 2026 launch-week window; email delivery began 20 October 2026 Pacific time, and gift purchases are excluded. An eligible invitee can play during that week without a subscription or Game Time, but the code does not grant beta access.
What do you need to play Midnight, the modern Retail expansion?
Midnight requires two purchases or entitlements: the Midnight expansion and active subscription or Game Time. Blizzard’s product requirement is explicit: “Requires World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time.” The subscription shop also says, “Midnight expansion sold separately. Future expansions not included in Midnight purchase.”
A subscription by itself unlocks the older Retail chapters on that WoW license, but not Midnight content. If you own Midnight, the same active time also lets you use the broader Retail game. Midnight launched worldwide on 2 March 2026 and advances the journey toward level 90 through Eversong Woods, Zul’Aman, Harandar and Voidstorm.

All three editions grant the expansion; the differences are cosmetics, Trader’s Tender, housing décor and historical launch benefits. Epic’s beta and three-day early access were pre-launch benefits and are no longer reasons to buy now. Blizzard’s live comparison table did not show current US dollar list prices for Base, Heroic or Epic in the available October 2026 view. Upgrading does not re-grant a boost or items you already unlocked, and the boost and in-game items are bound to the WoW account that purchased them. Trader’s Tender is granted once per Battle.net account and region per edition, capped at 2,000 from Epic.

How much does a WoW subscription cost?

Prices can vary by region. A Game Time purchase is the non-recurring alternative. Midnight Epic, Forever Skyborne Epic and the Warcraft Forever Collection each include 30 days; after that period, add Game Time or start a subscription. Epic Midnight time adds to time already on the account, while creating a new account does not create a free month.
Can you play Retail without paying?
Yes, but only through level 20 and only in modern Retail. New accounts, existing accounts and lapsed subscribers can use the Free Trial with eligible level-20 dungeons and quests. The official starter guide says all playable content is free up to level 20, including level-20 dungeons and quests. Social features are limited.
After Exile’s Reach, continuing the Dragonflight path beyond level 20 requires subscription or Game Time. Once paid, content through level 80 becomes available, including higher-level dungeons, raids, guilds, unrestricted chat and the Auction House. Characters on a lapsed account are not deleted; the account simply returns to trial status. The Free Trial is not available for WoW Classic games. Midnight items and Forever pack cosmetics are not usable in Classic. Select the intended WoW license (for example, WoW#1 rather than an extra license) before buying or redeeming, because entitlements and boosts stay attached to the account and license of purchase.
How do you install and start the correct version?
Have a verified Battle.net account, an active subscription or Game Time for paid play, broadband, and at least an SSD with 128 GB free. Blizzard lists Windows 10 64-bit (May 2019 update or newer), a four-core 3.0 GHz CPU, DirectX 12 graphics with 3 GB, 8 GB RAM and 1280×720 as minimum Windows figures; the recommended configuration is a six-core 3.5 GHz processor, 8 GB graphics, 16 GB RAM and an SSD. Mac minimums include macOS 10.15 and Apple M1 as an option.

- Create or sign in to Battle.net, verify the email address and enable two-factor authentication if available.
- Subscribe or add non-recurring Game Time to the WoW license you intend to play.
- Open the Battle.net desktop app, choose World of Warcraft, then select Forever for the 4 November launch or Retail for Midnight.
- Install or update the selected client. Installing files does not grant an unowned Midnight license or playtime.
- At launch, confirm the account has active time; for Midnight, also confirm the Midnight entitlement. For name reservation, confirm the qualifying Forever pack is on that same license.
Which purchase fits your situation?
- Just testing combat: use the Retail Free Trial through level 20 and buy nothing initially.
- Forever with no extras: buy a subscription or Game Time only.
- Skyborne or a reserved name: buy Heroic or higher on the correct WoW license, then have playtime ready for 4 November. Heroic has no included time.
- Forever cosmetics plus your first month: choose Epic or the Collection; its 30 days activate at launch.
- Warcraft III included: choose the Collection while it is available through 11 January 2027.
- Modern endgame and friends in Midnight: buy any Midnight edition plus subscription or Game Time. Base is sufficient for access; Epic is the only Midnight edition here with 30 days.
- Classic only: use subscription or Game Time and skip Midnight and Forever packs.
- Launch-week friend: use a qualifying non-gift pack’s Invite-A-Friend code between 4 and 11 November 2026.
What is not yet published?
Blizzard has not published a current player count, average revenue per user or conversion statistic for Midnight or Forever on the official pages reviewed. Exact live US prices for Midnight Base, Heroic and Epic, and the dollar price of the physical Collector’s Edition, were likewise not stated in those pages. Treat third-party prices or regional forum figures as observations for that region and date, not universal list prices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same WoW subscription for Forever and Midnight?
Yes. The subscription or Game Time is shared across the WoW account’s clients, but Midnight still needs its own expansion entitlement. Forever is included with the active time, while Classic uses the same time without either expansion.
When does the 30-day Game Time from an Epic pack begin?
For Midnight Epic, Forever Skyborne Epic and the Warcraft Forever Collection, the included 30 days are credited at the relevant Forever launch on 4 November 2026 rather than at checkout. That timing means an Epic Forever purchase does not provide paid time for the preceding name-reservation week.
Can a lapsed account keep its old characters during the Free Trial?
Yes. Higher-level characters remain on the account when time expires. The account returns to level-20 trial access until you add a subscription or Game Time.
Can Skyborne characters join any Forever server ruleset?
Skyborne characters choose Horde or Alliance at creation and start on Zephras Isle. Grouping, guilds, dungeons and raids require the same ruleset and faction, so a character cannot freely cross those boundaries.
