PlayStation Plus cloud streaming requires a PlayStation Plus Premium membership, an adult PlayStation account, a supported device and region, and a broadband connection that reaches at least 5 Mbps in both directions. That minimum only starts a session: Sony lists higher targets for 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K, and your actual experience also depends on latency, congestion, Wi-Fi quality and the game. You can stream selected titles on a PS5, PlayStation Portal or a compatible Windows PC. Portal cloud streaming does not require a PS5 console to be switched on, but it does require the Portal hardware and an eligible game.

What internet speed do I need for PlayStation Plus cloud streaming?

Sony states that a cloud-streaming session needs at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download. Treat that as a connection minimum, not a quality guarantee. Other devices using your network, unstable Wi-Fi, packet loss and high latency can still cause image degradation, input delay or disconnections even when a speed test shows more than 5 Mbps.

Official speed targets by resolution

Device or guidance Resolution Speed Sony specifies How to interpret it
General cloud-streaming minimum Session startup 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download Minimum to establish a session
PlayStation Portal guidance 720p At least 7 Mbps Practical target for Portal at 720p
PlayStation Portal guidance 1080p At least 13 Mbps Practical target for Portal at 1080p
PS5 cloud-streaming page 720p HD 13 Mbps recommended Higher recommendation for the PS5 page
PS5 cloud-streaming page 1080p Full HD 23 Mbps recommended Higher recommendation for the PS5 page
PS5 cloud-streaming page 1440p 38 Mbps recommended Recommendation for supported output
PS5 cloud-streaming page 2160p (4K) 52 Mbps recommended Recommendation for 4K-capable streaming

The Portal figures and PS5 figures are not interchangeable promises. Sony says individual game performance varies with the title and the quality of the network environment. A wired connection is generally easier to keep stable than Wi-Fi; if you use Wi-Fi, keep the device close to the access point, prefer a less congested band when available and pause large downloads or video streams elsewhere in the home.

How to check whether your connection is suitable

  1. Run a speed test on the same connection and, if possible, in the room where you will play.
  2. Check both download and upload results. A fast download rate does not compensate for an upload result below Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum.
  3. Repeat the test at the time you normally play. Evening congestion can produce a different result from a daytime test.
  4. If the result is close to the minimum, stop other high-bandwidth activity and test again before blaming the streaming service.

Speed tests do not measure every cause of poor play. A connection can meet a headline rate while suffering from jitter, packet loss or intermittent drops, so consistency matters as much as the peak number.

Do I need PlayStation Plus Premium to stream games?

Yes. Cloud Streaming is a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit. Essential and Extra include their own benefits but do not include the cloud-streaming feature.

Membership tier Cloud Streaming Other relevant benefits Sony lists
Essential Not included Other PlayStation Plus benefits; cloud streaming is not part of this tier
Extra Not included Game Catalog access and other tier benefits, but no cloud streaming
Premium Included Cloud Streaming, Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and game trials

You also need a PlayStation account. Cloud streaming on Portal is restricted to adult accounts, and the service is offered only in Sony-supported countries and regions. Check Sony’s current regional support information before subscribing because availability can change; the Portal guidance specifically excludes overseas territories from its listed availability.

Which devices work with PlayStation Plus cloud streaming?

The three main routes are a PlayStation 5, PlayStation Portal Remote Player and a compatible Windows PC. Their requirements are different, so buying or preparing one device does not automatically satisfy the requirements for another.

Route Hardware and software Does a PS5 console have to be available? Controller or input Typical streamable content
PlayStation Portal PlayStation Portal Remote Player, broadband Wi-Fi, adult PlayStation account, Premium membership and supported region No. The cloud session runs without a PS5 console being turned on Portal’s integrated controls Selected PS5 games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus selected digital PS5 games in your library
PlayStation 5 PS5 connected to the internet with an adult account and Premium membership The PS5 is the local device that starts the stream Compatible PS5 controller Selected PlayStation Store games, Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles, and selected free-to-play games
Windows PC PlayStation Plus PC app, compatible Windows computer, adult account, Premium membership and at least 5 Mbps broadband No, because the app connects to the cloud Compatible controller required PS4 games from the Game Catalog and selected Classics Catalog titles through the app

In every case, the title itself must be eligible. Cloud streaming is not a universal switch for every game associated with your account.

How do I start cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal?

Portal cloud streaming is designed for playing selected games directly from Sony’s servers. You need the Portal hardware, a PlayStation account, an active Premium membership, broadband Wi-Fi, an adult account and a supported country or region.

  1. Connect the PlayStation Portal Remote Player to broadband Wi-Fi and sign in with the adult PlayStation account that holds the Premium membership.
  2. From the Portal home screen, open the Cloud Streaming tab.
  3. Browse a title from PlayStation Plus Premium streaming, PlayStation Plus streaming games or an eligible game in Your Library.
  4. Select the game and choose Stream.
  5. If the title is not shown, search again using the Portal interface or verify its listing in Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder. A missing title can indicate catalog, region, account or time-based eligibility rather than a hardware fault.

Portal cloud streaming can include selected PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, as well as selected digital PS5 games you own. The game still has to be listed as eligible for your account and region.

Can I use PS Portal cloud streaming without a PS5 turned on?

Yes. A PS5 console does not need to be available or powered on for a Portal cloud session. Portal connects to the cloud service instead of using Remote Play from your own console.

That independence does not remove the other conditions: you still need the Portal device, Premium, an adult account, supported regional availability, a suitable broadband connection and a game included in the eligible catalog. A PS5 is therefore optional for this particular cloud-play path, not a substitute for the Portal hardware.

How do I stream a game on PS5?

On a PS5, eligible games display a PlayStation Plus Stream button. Streaming lets you start without downloading the game or waiting for updates to install.

  1. Sign in to the PS5 with the adult PlayStation account that has Premium.
  2. Open an eligible game page from the PlayStation Store, Game Catalog or Classics Catalog.
  3. Look for the PlayStation Plus Stream button.
  4. Select Stream rather than downloading or installing the title.
  5. If the button is absent, check Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder. Eligibility can differ by title, country or region and can change over time.

On PS5, Sony describes the eligible set as selected PlayStation Store titles, selected Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games and selected free-to-play games. The word “selected” matters: ownership or catalog membership alone does not guarantee a stream option.

What does a Windows PC need for PlayStation Plus streaming?

PC streaming uses Sony’s PlayStation Plus PC app, not a browser. You need an adult PlayStation Network account, an active Premium membership, broadband of at least 5 Mbps and a compatible controller. Sony recommends using a wired network connection for the computer.

Minimum PC specifications listed by Sony

Component Minimum listed requirement
Operating system Windows 8.1 or Windows 10
Processor Intel Core i3 2.0 GHz
Available storage 300 MB
Memory 2 GB RAM
Audio Sound card
Ports USB port
Network At least 5 Mbps broadband; wired connection recommended
Input Compatible controller

PC setup steps

  1. Install the free PlayStation Plus PC app on a compatible Windows computer.
  2. Sign in with an adult PlayStation Network account that has Premium and registered payment details.
  3. Connect a compatible controller by USB or the supported wireless method.
  4. Choose an available game in the app and select the stream option.
  5. If playback is unstable, switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet where possible, close competing network applications and check that the account and title are eligible in your country.

Sony’s PC guidance says the app can stream PS4 games from the Game Catalog and selected Classics Catalog titles. PC and Portal catalogs should not be assumed to be identical.

Which PlayStation games can I stream?

You can stream only selected titles. Eligibility depends on the device, the game category, your country or region and the date you check.

  • Portal: selected PS5 games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus selected digital PS5 games in your PlayStation Store library.
  • PS5: selected PlayStation Store titles, selected Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games and selected free-to-play games.
  • PC: PS4 games from the Game Catalog and selected Classics Catalog titles through the PlayStation Plus PC app.

Use Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder for the most reliable title-level check. On Portal, use the built-in search and streaming categories. If a game disappears, the change may reflect licensing, regional catalog rules or a scheduled catalog update rather than an issue with your membership.

How can I troubleshoot cloud-streaming problems?

Work from the simplest likely cause—eligibility and account status—before changing network hardware.

If you cannot start a stream

  • Confirm that the account is an adult account and that Premium is active. Essential and Extra do not unlock Cloud Streaming.
  • Check that your country or region is supported. Portal availability does not automatically extend to overseas territories.
  • Search the title in Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder or the Portal search. An absent Stream button usually means the title is not eligible for that device, region or date.
  • On Portal, verify that you are using the Portal Remote Player; a phone, tablet or ordinary Remote Play setup is not a replacement for the required Portal hardware.

If the stream starts but looks poor

  • Measure upload and download, not download alone. Both must reach at least 5 Mbps to meet the basic session requirement.
  • Compare your result with the resolution target you are trying to use: Portal guidance lists 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p, while Sony’s PS5 page recommends 13, 23, 38 and 52 Mbps for 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K respectively.
  • Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point or use a wired connection on the PS5 or PC.
  • Pause cloud backups, large downloads and high-resolution video on other devices.
  • Retest at a less congested time. A speed result can vary significantly during busy household or neighborhood periods.

If controls feel delayed

Higher bandwidth cannot by itself remove latency. Test the same device on a stable wired connection where possible, eliminate competing traffic and compare performance at another time of day. Sony cautions that performance varies by game and network environment, so one title may feel different from another on the same connection.

Is PlayStation Plus cloud streaming worth using instead of downloading?

Cloud streaming is most useful when you want to try an eligible game immediately, avoid a large download or play on a Portal without relying on a home PS5. It is less suitable when your connection is unstable, the game is not in the selected catalog or you need guaranteed local access to a title.

  • Choose Portal if you want a handheld device with integrated controls and are comfortable with Wi-Fi and the selected Portal catalog.
  • Choose PS5 streaming if you already play on PS5 and want to avoid installing an eligible game or its updates.
  • Choose PC streaming if you have a compatible Windows computer, controller and preferably Ethernet, and the PS4 or Classics title you want is listed in the PC app.
  • Download locally when you need predictable performance, offline access or a title that is not streamable.

Before paying for Premium specifically for streaming, check three things in order: your country’s availability, the exact games you want and the connection quality at your normal play time. Those checks prevent the common mistake of assuming that every PlayStation game becomes streamable with a subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are PlayStation Plus cloud-streaming regions the same everywhere?

No. Sony limits the feature to supported countries and regions, and availability can change. The Portal guidance lists numerous countries but excludes overseas territories, so verify the current regional page for the account’s location before subscribing.

Does a PC user need a PlayStation console to use the Plus app?

No. The Windows app connects to the cloud and does not require a PS5 console to be switched on. It does require the app, an adult account with Premium, registered payment details, a compatible controller and a supported Windows setup.

Why is a game in my library but missing from cloud streaming?

Library ownership does not make every title eligible. Sony’s streamable set is selected by game, device, region and time; use the Cloud Streaming Game Finder or Portal search to check the current status.

Can a child account use PlayStation Plus cloud streaming on Portal?

No. Sony’s Portal guidance states that Cloud Streaming is not available for child accounts. The account used for the session must meet the adult-account requirement in a supported region.
