Play Majora’s Mask next if you want the closest N64-era follow-up to Ocarina of Time. For another 3D Zelda centered on dungeons and items, choose Skyward Sword HD. Pick The Wind Waker for a seafaring change of pace if you have a Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack; choose Breath of the Wild if you want to set your own route through Hyrule. Outside the series, TUNIC is a strong option for players drawn to secrets and discovery, though its perspective and combat are different.
The right next game depends on what you want to keep from Ocarina—dungeons, puzzles, exploration, or a particular era—as well as the hardware and membership you already have.

How do I choose what to play after Ocarina of Time?
Start with the part of Ocarina you most want to experience again. Its particular combination of a directed 3D adventure and dungeons is not the only way to get a satisfying Zelda follow-up.

- Want the same N64-era context? Pick Majora’s Mask. Nintendo lists both N64 games together in its Classics library.
- Want a directed 3D adventure with dungeons and useful items? Pick Skyward Sword HD. Its official listing describes puzzle-filled dungeons and items that open further exploration.
- Want a change in setting but still a 3D Zelda? Consider The Wind Waker, provided you can access GameCube Classics on Switch 2.
- Want more freedom to decide where to go? Start with Breath of the Wild, which emphasizes setting your own route through Hyrule.
- Want a different viewpoint or a different kind of discovery? Try top-down Link’s Awakening or isometric action-adventure TUNIC, rather than expecting another version of Ocarina.
A practical way to narrow it down is to separate the experience you want from the access you have. First decide whether a 3D camera and directed dungeons matter most, or whether you would trade that structure for exploration, a different viewpoint, or an unusual puzzle tool. Then check the platform and membership: a subscription library is not the same as owning an individually listed game, and the GameCube Classics route has a Switch 2 requirement in addition to the Expansion Pack.
Hardware can settle the decision quickly. In the US-facing Nintendo information checked on October 30, 2026, Majora’s Mask is accessed through N64 Classics and requires the Expansion Pack. The Wind Waker is in GameCube Classics, which also requires Switch 2. By contrast, Nintendo lists Skyward Sword HD, Link’s Awakening, and Echoes of Wisdom as Switch games. Check local availability if you are outside the US, since membership availability can vary by country.
There is no single access requirement shared by all the picks. The Classics choices require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership at the appropriate tier, while the listed Switch games are separate titles. For Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, an Expansion Pack upgrade pack for a qualifying owner is not the same as the full game itself. The controller question is separate, too: motion controls are optional for Skyward Sword HD, and the GameCube-style Switch 2 controller is optional for The Wind Waker.
Should I play Majora’s Mask next?
Yes, if you want to stay closest to the N64-era version of Zelda after Ocarina of Time. Nintendo lists the two games together under N64 Classics, making Majora’s Mask the most direct recommendation for someone who wants another game from that era.
The important practical detail is access: the N64 Classics library requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo’s listing does not make either game a standalone Switch purchase. The basic membership’s NES, Super NES, and Game Boy games are a different tier, so do not assume the basic subscription provides the N64 library. Nintendo’s membership and support information is available on its Expansion Pack page and its Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ.
This is the best fit when the era and feel of the original matter more than getting a different setting or a newer design approach. It is not a recommendation based on a claim that the two games are mechanically identical or that one is a required next chapter; it is simply the closest match in this set for an N64-era follow-up.
That distinction matters if you are choosing based on story order rather than platform or era. The available Nintendo listing establishes that both games are in the N64 Classics library; it does not by itself establish every detail of their place in the series timeline. Choose Majora’s Mask here because it is the closest N64-era option, not because this guide is asserting that you must play it next.
Which Zelda has dungeons most like Ocarina of Time?
Skyward Sword HD is the strongest fit among the individually listed Switch games if you want a directed 3D adventure built around puzzle-filled dungeons and items that expand exploration. It preserves that broad dungeon-and-item structure without being a chronological sequel to Ocarina.
Why choose Skyward Sword HD?
Nintendo describes a journey through dungeons packed with puzzles and explains that acquired items help open up more of the world. Those details make it a sensible choice for someone who wants a guided adventure with designed puzzle spaces, rather than an open-ended Hyrule to cross at their own pace. Nintendo presents its story as an early tale about Link, Zelda, and the Master Sword—not as what happens immediately after Ocarina.

Control preference need not rule it out. Nintendo’s listing allows motion controls for swordplay, but also supports button-only controls, including with a Switch Pro Controller. If motion controls are a concern, check that button-only option before buying. The game is listed for Nintendo Switch on Nintendo’s Skyward Sword HD page.
Recommended Free Tools
That makes it a useful middle ground in this guide: it is a standalone Switch game rather than a Classics-library benefit, and its dungeons and item-led exploration offer a more directed structure than the Hyrule-roaming pitch of Breath of the Wild. Its controls also give you a choice. If you specifically want motion-based swordplay, that option is there; if you prefer buttons, Nintendo lists that route as well. Neither control option changes the fact that it is a distinct adventure, not a direct Ocarina sequel.
When is a top-down Zelda a better choice?
Link’s Awakening is the better fit if you want dungeons and puzzles but do not need a 3D camera or a large Hyrule to explore. Nintendo’s listing places it on Koholint Island and describes trap-filled dungeons and rearrangeable Chamber Dungeons. Its viewpoint, island setting, and more compact feel are the point—not an attempt to reproduce the scale or presentation of Ocarina. See Nintendo’s Link’s Awakening listing.
In other words, choose it when the appeal is a focused island adventure with dungeon puzzles, not when your must-have is a 3D camera or a broad journey across Hyrule. The Chamber Dungeon feature adds a rearrangeable dungeon angle, but it does not make the game a like-for-like replacement for the N64 presentation.
What if I want to solve puzzles in a different way?
Echoes of Wisdom puts Zelda in the lead and builds its puzzles and fights around the Tri Rod. Nintendo describes using echoes of objects and creatures found in the world. That makes it a choice for players who want to improvise with available tools rather than simply seek a familiar 3D dungeon formula. Nintendo also documents a free visual-enhancement update for Switch 2; that is an update, not a separate Switch 2 edition. Details are on Nintendo’s Echoes of Wisdom page.
Its recommendation is about the puzzle approach and lead character, not matching Ocarina’s camera or structure. If you want to experiment with ways to solve problems and fight using echoes of objects and creatures, this is the relevant alternative. If what you want is specifically a familiar 3D dungeon sequence, Skyward Sword HD is the closer fit.
Can I play The Wind Waker on Switch?
In the route documented by Nintendo as of October 30, 2026, The Wind Waker is available through GameCube Classics on Switch 2 with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. A standard Switch with the same membership does not gain access to the GameCube Classics library.
The GameCube-style Switch 2 controller is optional; it is not a condition for playing the game. Nor should this Classics route be confused with a separately sold Wind Waker HD edition or treated as a native, individual Switch purchase. Nintendo’s Expansion Pack information identifies the relevant service and platform conditions.
Choose it for the seafaring change of pace, not because it is the nearest structural match for Ocarina. If you do not own a Switch 2 or do not want the Expansion Pack, the other listed Switch games are more practical recommendations.

Before choosing it, check both parts of the requirement rather than just the subscription name: the Switch 2 is needed for GameCube Classics, and the Expansion Pack is needed for that library. The optional controller does not replace either requirement. Also keep this route distinct from a separate HD edition; the documented Classics access is not a native individual Switch purchase. For readers without that hardware and membership, Skyward Sword HD is the more straightforward 3D dungeon recommendation in this list.
Is Breath of the Wild the right next game?
Choose Breath of the Wild if you want freedom to explore Hyrule and decide your own route more than you want a tightly directed sequence of dungeons. Nintendo foregrounds roaming, climbing, and solving Shrine puzzles; this makes it a deliberate change of pace from the more directed recommendation of Skyward Sword HD.
The central trade-off is structure. If what you miss most from Ocarina is a directed progression through dungeon spaces, Skyward Sword HD is a closer match. If you want to discover places at your own pace and choose how to approach challenges, start with Breath of the Wild. Its product listing is for the full game, not access supplied by a subscription; Nintendo describes the Expansion Pack as including Switch 2 edition upgrade packs for qualifying owners of the base games, not as providing the full games by itself. Check Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild listing for the game and edition information.
The choice is less about which game has more puzzles than about how much direction you want between them. Nintendo’s description of Breath of the Wild highlights climbing and a personal route through Hyrule alongside Shrine puzzles. That is a strong fit if exploration itself is the draw. If you are looking for an adventure organized around puzzle-filled dungeons and acquired items opening up further exploration, choose Skyward Sword HD instead.

Should I play Tears of the Kingdom first?
If you have played neither, Breath of the Wild is the clearest starting point: Nintendo describes Tears of the Kingdom as its sequel. Tears adds creative construction through abilities such as Ultrahand and Fuse, so it may appeal if those systems are specifically what you want. Both games have Switch listings and Switch 2 editions; the Expansion Pack does not replace ownership of a qualifying base game. Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom listing describes its edition, while the Expansion Pack page explains the upgrade-pack condition.
Think of Tears as a follow-on option within the exploration-focused pair, rather than the default first purchase for someone starting both games. The reason to choose it first would be a specific interest in its construction systems, including Ultrahand and Fuse—not a need to own it to access Breath of the Wild. Check which edition and base game you are acquiring, since the membership upgrade pack applies only to qualifying owners.
What is a good non-Zelda alternative?
TUNIC is the strongest documented non-Zelda choice here if what you want is discovery, connected spaces, and secrets. It is not an Ocarina clone: it is an isometric action game with technical combat and a different perspective.
Finji’s publisher-provided description emphasizes an intricately connected world, hidden secrets, and manual pages discovered during play. The discovery of those pages is a meaningful fit for players who like gradually learning how a game’s world works, but the viewpoint and combat are different enough that it should be treated as an alternative in spirit, not a substitute in mechanics. Nintendo lists the Switch version on its TUNIC page.

Cadence of Hyrule is another possible detour if you want Zelda’s setting but are open to a very different play style. Its action is timed to rhythm, and it uses a randomly generated overworld and dungeons. That makes it a side choice for players willing to change how they approach combat and movement, rather than a main 3D replacement for Ocarina.
In this comparison, Cadence of Hyrule answers a narrower question: “Do I want Zelda’s setting with a rhythm-based change in how I move and fight?” It is not the pick for someone mainly seeking another N64-like 3D adventure. Consider it only if the rhythm-timed action and randomly generated areas sound like part of the appeal.

Membership-based Classics are not the same thing as a permanently free collection or an individual digital purchase. In the US-facing Nintendo information checked on October 30, 2026, access to these game libraries requires an active membership; the N64 library requires the Expansion Pack, and GameCube Classics also require Switch 2. The basic membership’s NES, Super NES, and Game Boy titles are a separate offering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNintendo Support’s Nintendo Classics – Nintendo Switch Online Overview & FAQ says, “There are no plans to make the games available outside of the Nintendo Switch Online service.” That describes Nintendo’s stated plans on the checked support page, not an eternal guarantee. It is another reason to treat Classics access as a membership-based route rather than assume the library application or its games are permanently free. Membership availability can also vary by country, so check the local Nintendo information if you are outside the US.
There is also a date-sensitive point about the game you are moving on from: Nintendo’s product page listed a new physical Switch 2 edition of Ocarina of Time for November 5, 2026. As of October 30, 2026, it was forthcoming, not yet released. That edition is not an alternative game to play after Ocarina, and its status should be checked again after the listed launch date. Nintendo’s listing is at the Ocarina of Time Switch 2 product page.
For Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, do not confuse a Switch 2 edition upgrade pack with the game itself: Nintendo describes those packs as available to qualifying owners of the base games. The same kind of distinction matters for the Classics titles, where the app is a way to access a library under the appropriate active membership, not a separate permanent entitlement. These access notes are US-facing and checked on October 30, 2026; availability and requirements can change, so confirm the current Nintendo listing for your region and platform.
How were these recommendations chosen?
The picks are organized around documented features and practical access, rather than unsupported claims of an objective winner. The comparison asks what an Ocarina player may want to keep: the N64 era, designed 3D dungeons, Hyrule exploration, puzzles, secrets, or simply a Zelda setting. It also distinguishes camera and perspective, how directed an adventure feels, control options, and whether the required platform or subscription is already available.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to play Skyward Sword HD?
No membership is identified as a requirement for the individually listed Skyward Sword HD game. Nintendo lists it as a Nintendo Switch title on its product page; this differs from access to games in the Classics libraries.
Does the Ocarina of Time Switch 2 edition replace the other Zelda recommendations?
No. The listing is for another edition of the game the reader is moving on from, not a different adventure. Nintendo’s page gave November 5, 2026 as its physical release date; at the October 30 cutoff, it was still forthcoming. See Nintendo’s product listing.
Can I play The Wind Waker on a standard Nintendo Switch?
The Nintendo route checked here is GameCube Classics on Switch 2, with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. A standard Switch with the same membership does not provide access to GameCube Classics. The GameCube-style Switch 2 controller is optional; it does not replace the hardware or membership requirements.
Do I need motion controls for Skyward Sword HD?
No. Nintendo’s listing describes motion controls for swordplay and also allows button-only controls, including with a Switch Pro Controller. Check the listing for control details if you want to confirm your setup before choosing the game.
Does Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack include Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom?
Do not treat the Expansion Pack as supplying either full game. Nintendo describes Switch 2 edition upgrade packs for qualifying owners of the base games; check the game listing and edition details for what you need to own.
Should I start with Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom?
If you have played neither, Breath of the Wild is the clearest starting point because Nintendo describes Tears of the Kingdom as its sequel. Choose Tears first only if its construction abilities, including Ultrahand and Fuse, are specifically what you want.

Is Echoes of Wisdom a separate Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo documents a free visual-enhancement update for Switch 2. It is an update, not a separate Switch 2 edition.
The Bottom Line
For the closest N64-era follow-up, play Majora’s Mask. Choose Skyward Sword HD for a directed 3D dungeon adventure, The Wind Waker for a seafaring change of pace if you have Switch 2 and Expansion Pack access, or Breath of the Wild for freedom to explore. For a different perspective and discovery style, consider Link’s Awakening, Echoes of Wisdom, or TUNIC; none is an exact substitute for Ocarina of Time.
