Read an AI company’s earnings report as a connected account of demand, delivery costs, and the cash committed to build capacity. Revenue growth shows whether customers are buying; margins indicate what it costs to serve them; and capital spending reveals how much infrastructure the company is funding before it can earn a return on it. To judge whether growth is durable, connect those figures to guidance, backlog or remaining performance obligations, depreciation, utilization, and cash flow—not to a single headline number.

What should I look for first in an AI company’s earnings report?

Start by identifying what the company sells and where AI appears in its business. A chip supplier, cloud platform, and advertising company can all benefit from AI, but their revenue, costs, and investment cycles are different. A raw growth-rate comparison between them can obscure more than it reveals.

Then read the report in sequence: revenue and its quality, margins and their drivers, capital spending and capacity, management’s outlook, and cash conversion. The aim is to test a chain of assumptions: customers are demanding the product; the company can serve that demand at acceptable economics; and the infrastructure investment can eventually support revenue and cash generation.

Build a small, consistent scorecard

  • Demand: Total and segment revenue, year-over-year and sequential growth, and the share attributable to organic growth rather than acquisitions.
  • Revenue quality: Recurring or usage-based sales, customer concentration, and backlog or remaining performance obligations where disclosed.
  • Economics: Gross and operating margins, with attention to the costs between revenue and each measure.
  • Capacity: Cash purchases of property and equipment, capex guidance, assets not yet in service, depreciation, and lease commitments.
  • Funding and return: Operating cash flow, free cash flow after capex, cash and marketable securities, debt, commitments, and shareholder returns.

Use the same scorecard from quarter to quarter. A change in one line is more informative when you can see whether it agrees with the other lines or contradicts them.

Is AI revenue growing fast enough to justify the spending?

There is no universal growth rate that makes AI spending worthwhile. The relevant test is whether the company’s revenue mix, demand visibility, and margins support its investment over time. A large and fast-growing business line can still be less profitable or less predictable than the headline suggests.

Separate company-wide growth from AI-related growth

First check whether the company reports a distinct AI revenue figure or instead groups AI-related sales into a broader segment. Do not treat a cloud segment, a data-center segment, or total company revenue as a precise measure of AI sales unless the company defines it that way. Compare both total revenue and the closest disclosed segment, and note what the company does not break out.

Check year-over-year growth alongside sequential growth. Year-over-year growth compares with the same period a year earlier and can be affected by a weak or unusually strong comparison period. Sequential growth shows the change from the previous quarter, but can also reflect seasonality. Neither measure alone establishes the pace or durability of demand.

Look for evidence that sales will continue

Backlog and remaining performance obligations can help explain how much contracted work or future revenue is visible, but they are not the same as revenue already earned. Their meaning depends on the company’s definitions, timing, and ability to deliver. Customer concentration also matters: demand can be real while depending heavily on a small number of buyers.

For context, Microsoft reported fiscal-2026 Microsoft Cloud revenue of $214.4 billion, up 27%, while commercial remaining performance obligation rose 84% to $678 billion (Microsoft Investor Relations, 2026). Those figures describe the cloud business and commercial obligations, not a separately stated AI-revenue total. They are useful together as indicators of scale and contracted demand, but an investor still needs to assess delivery timing, margins, and how much of the obligations relate to AI.

Account for acquisitions and revenue mix

If a company grows through an acquisition, separate acquired growth from organic growth where the report provides that information. Then consider mix: rapid growth in a lower-margin or usage-sensitive activity may affect the company’s economics differently from growth in a more recurring business. The report’s segment definitions and disclosures determine how precisely you can make that assessment; do not fill gaps with assumptions.

Are AI margins improving or getting worse?

Track gross margin and operating margin separately, then identify what is driving each change. Gross margin reflects the cost of delivering products and services; operating margin also incorporates expenses such as research, sales, and administration. For AI businesses, rising infrastructure costs can weigh on margins even when revenue is increasing.

Trace the margin bridge

Ask what changed between revenue and gross profit, and then between gross profit and operating income. Relevant infrastructure pressures can include GPUs, networking, energy, data-center operations, and depreciation. Operating expenses can rise for separate reasons, including investment in engineering or other business functions. Management’s explanation should be compared with the reported results and prior periods rather than accepted as a substitute for them.

Microsoft’s fiscal-2025 annual report put Microsoft Cloud gross-margin percentage at 69% and said it decreased because of the impact of scaling AI infrastructure. The same annual report reported $281.724 billion in revenue and $193.893 billion in gross margin for Microsoft overall (Microsoft, 2025). These are different scopes: the 69% figure is for Microsoft Cloud, while the revenue and gross-margin figures are company-wide. Keeping those boundaries clear prevents an easy but invalid comparison.

A margin decline does not, by itself, prove that investment is failing. It may reflect capacity and costs arriving before the associated revenue, but that explanation needs support from demand, utilization, and later financial results. Conversely, strong current margins do not prove that new investment will pay off: some costs, particularly depreciation, may appear after the cash is spent and the assets enter service.

Compare the direction, not just the level

Record the margin level, its change from comparable periods, and management’s explanation. Then check whether the explanation matches the company’s spending pattern and revenue mix. A rising gross margin alongside faster revenue growth may indicate improving delivery economics, but it does not establish that operating costs or future capacity commitments are under control.

How much are companies spending on data centers and GPUs?

Use cash purchases of property and equipment and the company’s capex outlook to understand investment scale. These measures can include more than GPUs: servers, networking equipment, land, and data-center construction may all be involved. Do not assume that a capex figure equals spending on AI accelerators alone.

Distinguish cash capex from expenses

Purchases of property and equipment are cash outflows. Operating expenses, by contrast, are costs recognized in the income statement as incurred under the applicable accounting treatment. Depreciation generally follows later as assets are placed in service and their cost is recognized over time. This timing difference means a company may commit substantial cash to future capacity while current margins have not yet absorbed the full depreciation burden.

Look beyond the headline capex total. Check whether guidance refers to cash spending or another measure, what the company says is included, and whether it identifies assets not yet in service, lease commitments, or purchase commitments. The more clearly the company explains those items, the better you can assess how much investment is already committed and when the related capacity could become usable.

Examples of reported and planned investment

Company and period Reported investment figure How to interpret it
Meta, 2025 $69.69 billion in property-and-equipment purchases (Meta Form 10-K, 2025) Reported purchases in 2025; not a GPU-only figure.
Meta, 2026 outlook Approximately $115 billion to $135 billion of capex guidance (Meta Investor Relations, 2026) An approximate outlook for 2026, not a reported final result.
Alphabet, 2024 and 2025 $52.5 billion in 2024 and $91.4 billion in 2025 capital expenditures (Alphabet, 2025) Annual spending rose between the two reported years.

Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K said, “In 2026, we expect to significantly increase, relative to 2025, our investment in our technical infrastructure.” That is forward-looking guidance, not a quantified capex forecast in the cited statement. Alphabet also says data-center projects can take months to years from purchase to service, so spending and revenue contribution may be separated by a meaningful interval.

When will AI capex show up in revenue and free cash flow?

There is no single conversion date. New infrastructure must be built or delivered, put into service, and used to meet demand before it can support revenue. The timing depends on the project and the company’s ability to fill and operate capacity; Alphabet’s disclosure that data-center projects can take months to years from purchase to service illustrates why quarterly spending and quarterly revenue need not move together.

Follow capacity through the accounts

  1. Cash outlay: Identify property-and-equipment purchases and the relevant capex guidance. Note when the figure was reported and whether guidance is approximate.
  2. Deployment: Look for disclosure about assets under construction or not yet in service, and about commitments that may require future cash payments.
  3. Cost recognition: Track depreciation and its effect on gross margin or operating expenses as assets enter service.
  4. Commercial use: Compare the arriving capacity with revenue growth, contracted demand, utilization, and pricing where the company reports them.
  5. Cash result: Check operating cash flow and free cash flow after capex. These show whether cash generation is keeping pace with investment, not just whether accounting earnings are growing.

Do not infer utilization from a large backlog alone, or assume that a spending increase immediately creates sales. Backlog or remaining performance obligations can indicate visibility, but the company still has to deliver; capacity still has to be put to work; and the economics of serving demand still matter. If utilization is not disclosed, mark it as unknown rather than treating an inference as a reported fact.

What does guidance tell me about an AI company’s plans?

Guidance is a set of testable assumptions about the near future, not a promise. Compare the new outlook with the previous one and with the result the company just reported. Look at revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, and capex together; a higher sales outlook accompanied by heavier spending can imply different economics from one accompanied by improving margins.

NVIDIA guided to fiscal-2027 first-quarter revenue of $78.0 billion, plus or minus 2%, and GAAP gross margin of 74.9%, plus or minus 50 basis points (NVIDIA Investor Relations, 2026). The period and measure are important: this is guidance for a specific fiscal quarter, not a reported result or a general forecast for every business line.

For comparison with actual results, NVIDIA reported fiscal-2026 revenue of $215.938 billion, up 65%, and a 71.1% GAAP gross margin (NVIDIA, 2026). Its fiscal-2025 figures included $115.2 billion of data-center revenue and $16.4 billion of operating expenses. These figures refer to different fiscal years and measures; do not combine them as if they were one period’s results. They show why it is useful to track both the scale and growth of a business line and the costs of operating the company.

Test guidance against execution

At the next report, compare actual results with the prior guidance and note whether management revised its assumptions. Repeatedly missed outlooks, delayed projects, or rising costs without corresponding evidence of demand can weaken confidence in the forecast. A forecast met or exceeded is useful evidence about execution, but still does not guarantee that later spending will earn an adequate return.

How should I assess cash flow and financial resilience?

Compare operating cash flow with capital spending to see how much cash remains after the business funds its infrastructure. Free cash flow after capex is a useful lens, but check the company’s definition because presentations may differ. Review cash and marketable securities, debt, purchase commitments, and shareholder returns as well: they help indicate how much flexibility the company has if investment rises or demand slows.

NVIDIA’s fiscal-2025 annual report recorded $64.1 billion of operating cash flow and $43.2 billion of cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities (NVIDIA, 2025 Annual Report). These are historical figures for that fiscal year, not a statement about NVIDIA’s later cash position. Read such figures alongside capex and commitments from the same period before drawing conclusions about funding capacity.

A company can report rising revenue and positive operating cash flow while spending enough on capex to reduce cash left after investment. That is not automatically a warning: the spending may be intended to build productive capacity. The relevant question is whether cash generation, liquidity, and credible demand can support the commitments through the period before capacity becomes productive.

How do I compare AI companies without misleading myself?

Compare companies on common analytical axes, but respect differences in business model and reporting. A supplier that sells chips, a cloud operator that serves customers, and an advertising business that uses AI internally do not monetize AI in the same way. Their revenue definitions, infrastructure ownership, and timing of costs may differ.

Comparison axis Question to ask
Growth quality What segment is growing, how much is organic, and how visible is future demand?
Margin trajectory Are gross and operating margins changing, and what costs explain the movement?
Capex intensity How large is investment relative to the business, and what capacity or commitments does it cover?
Cash conversion How much operating cash flow remains after capex, and what balance-sheet resources are available?
Guidance credibility How does the company perform against prior outlooks, and how transparent are its assumptions?

Use each company’s own definitions consistently, and avoid ranking businesses on one raw growth percentage. If a comparable value is not disclosed—such as AI-only revenue, utilization, or the proportion of capex devoted to GPUs—record that the value is not stated rather than estimating it from a broader line item.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can AI revenue grow while free cash flow falls?

Revenue reflects sales recognized in a period, while capex is cash paid for long-lived assets that may serve customers over several years. When investment ramps ahead of deployment and customer use, the cash outflow can rise before the resulting revenue and operating cash flow.

What is the difference between backlog and remaining performance obligations?

The terms are company- and accounting-context dependent, so check the issuer’s definition before comparing them. Neither should be treated as cash already collected or revenue already earned; they describe future work or obligations with timing and delivery conditions.

Should I use GAAP or adjusted margins when reading AI earnings?

Use the reported GAAP measure as an anchor, then inspect any adjusted measure and the reconciliation explaining exclusions. An adjusted figure can help isolate management’s chosen view of operating performance, but excluded costs may still matter to shareholders and should not be silently ignored.

Why might a company’s capex guidance change after one quarter?

Projects, equipment delivery, construction schedules, and demand assumptions can shift, so guidance is revised as plans and conditions change. Compare the new outlook with the prior one and look for the stated reason instead of assuming every increase means stronger customer demand.
