If you run out of Xbox Cloud Gaming hours, check the Xbox Store for an offer to buy more cloud playtime. Microsoft announced that extra hours would be available after the monthly allowance is exhausted, but it has not stated the final prices, package sizes or availability for every market. If there is no suitable offer for your account, you can wait for the next allowance or download and play an eligible game on a compatible Xbox or PC instead.
The announced monthly allowances are 5 hours for Game Pass Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate. Microsoft says the change begins in November 2026; check your account for the terms that apply to you, particularly if you have an existing recurring subscription.

Once you have used the cloud-playtime allowance for your subscription, you cannot keep streaming under that included monthly allowance. Microsoft says subscribers will be able to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store after reaching the limit. The company has not announced a universal price, bundle size or market-by-market availability, so the offer shown to your account is the relevant one to check.
Microsoft announced that the monthly-limit change begins in November 2026. Its announcement says the limits are expected to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. That is an estimate from Xbox, not a guarantee about how the change will affect any particular account. The current Xbox Cloud Gaming product page shows the same tier allowances:

These are monthly allowances, not a promise that a particular number of sessions or games will be available. Microsoft’s announcement explains the change this way: “We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer.” The statement describes the company’s rationale; it does not set out an individual subscriber’s extra-hour price or reset date.
How can I keep playing after my Xbox cloud limit?
First check whether your Xbox Store account offers more cloud playtime. If it does not, or you do not want to pay for extra hours, the practical alternatives are to wait for your next monthly allowance or play locally by installing an eligible title on an Xbox console or PC.

- Open the Xbox Store while signed in to the account with the Game Pass subscription.
- Look for an offer to purchase additional cloud playtime. Availability, price and package size may depend on your market and account.
- Review the offer’s price and terms before purchasing. The announcement does not establish a standard price or a single bundle that applies everywhere.
If no offer appears, do not assume that a different subscription tier, device or accessory will bypass the limit. Check the Xbox Store again later if you want to see whether an offer has become available, or use one of the alternatives below.
Install and play locally
When a game is eligible for local play and you have a compatible Xbox or PC, downloading it lets you play on that device rather than stream it through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Local installation is a different way to access a playable title; it is not additional cloud time. Confirm that the specific game is available for installation on your device and that you have the storage space it requires before choosing this route.

Xbox’s setup guidance distinguishes console and PC play from cloud streaming. Cloud gaming requires a supported device, compatible controller, supported region and high-speed internet. Those requirements matter when streaming; having a controller or improving your connection does not add hours to the monthly allowance.
Wait for the next allowance
If neither an extra-hours offer nor local play suits you, stop streaming and wait for the next monthly allowance under your subscription. The reviewed Microsoft announcement does not specify a universal reset date or time, so use the date or terms displayed for your account rather than assuming the allowance renews at midnight on the first day of every month.
Can I buy more Xbox cloud gaming time?
Microsoft says subscribers can purchase extra cloud playtime through the Xbox Store after using the included allowance. Whether you can buy it, how much it costs and how many hours a package includes are details to verify in the Store for your account and market.
The announcement does not provide a final price list or bundle sizes. That means there is no reliable universal cost comparison to make in advance. Before buying, compare the displayed price and number of hours with your expected playtime, and check any stated purchase or expiration terms. Do not treat a gift card, controller or physical game as a way to extend the cloud allowance; none adds cloud hours.

Does upgrading Game Pass reset my cloud hours?
Microsoft’s stated rule does not say that changing tiers resets an already-used allowance. It says that when someone has more than one eligible Game Pass subscription, the included hours cannot be combined: the subscription with the higher allowance applies.
So do not upgrade on the assumption that doing so will create a fresh, separate block of hours or restore hours already used. The published tier allowances are 5 hours for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate per month, but the announcement does not explain every account-change scenario, such as the exact treatment of a mid-month upgrade. Check the confirmation screen and account terms before changing plans.
Can I combine cloud hours from multiple Game Pass subscriptions?
No. Xbox says included hours from multiple eligible Game Pass subscriptions cannot be added together; the subscription with the higher allowance applies. For example, the rule does not let a subscriber combine two lower allowances to create a larger pool.
This matters if you are considering buying or keeping another subscription to extend streaming. Check which subscription Xbox identifies as applicable to your account rather than totaling the allowances yourself.

Do Xbox cloud hours roll over?
Microsoft’s reviewed announcement does not say whether unused monthly hours carry over. It also does not publish a universal reset date or time. Until Xbox states otherwise in the terms for your account, do not count on unused hours being added to the next month’s allowance.
For the same reason, if your account displays a renewal or usage detail, rely on that account-specific information instead of inferring a rollover rule from the monthly limits. Extra-hour purchases may have separate terms, so read those terms in the Store before buying.

Possibly. The allowance and extra-hours offer may be subject to market-specific terms, and reports about existing recurring subscribers have not been consistent across countries. VGC reported that some auto-recurring subscribers in Australia, Brazil, Poland and Germany were told the new caps would not affect their current subscription. Reports did not show the same notice in the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom.
That reporting is not a universal exemption, and it does not establish what applies to every subscriber in those countries. Before canceling, changing or repurchasing a subscription, check your Xbox account and Microsoft email for a notice addressed to you, then read the current terms for your market. A report about some customers is not a substitute for an account-specific confirmation.
Which option makes sense after the cap?
The right next step depends on whether you need to play immediately, whether the game can be installed locally and what the Store offers in your market.

If you mainly want to continue one game and can install it, local play avoids relying on an extra-hours offer. If streaming is essential, the Store is the place to check for a purchase option; if the displayed terms do not suit you, waiting is the no-purchase alternative.
What should I check before changing or canceling my subscription?
Review account-specific notices before making a change, especially if you have an auto-recurring subscription. The reports about grandfathering vary by country and do not establish a blanket rule. A cancellation followed by a later repurchase may not preserve the same terms, and the reviewed sources do not establish how every such change is handled.
- Check the Xbox account page for messages or subscription terms tied to your account.
- Search the Microsoft email address associated with the subscription for a notice about the monthly cap.
- Read the terms shown for your country before canceling, changing tiers or restarting a subscription.
- Do not assume that a notice reported for other subscribers applies to you.
