If a Steam game’s AI disclosure does not match what you encounter, treat it as a factual discrepancy to document and report—not as proof of deception. Save the store-page wording, game version, and examples of the content; ask the developer for clarification; report illegal live-generated output through Steam’s in-game overlay; and send purchase or store-page complaints to Steam Support. A refund is not automatic, but Valve’s standard policy covers eligible requests made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime, while later requests can still be reviewed.
The key is identifying what kind of AI use is in dispute. Valve distinguishes player-facing content generated before release from content generated while the game runs, and its disclosure focuses on content that ships with the game and is consumed by players—not every private development shortcut.

What does Steam’s AI disclosure actually cover?
Valve’s Steamworks guidance separates AI use into two categories and asks developers to describe them when applicable. The distinction matters because a game can use AI during development without delivering AI-generated material to players.

Valve describes pre-generated AI as “Any kind of content (art/code/sound/etc) created with the help of AI tools during development” and live-generated AI as “Any kind of content created with the help of AI tools while the game is running.” Its documentation also says that “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus” and instead concentrates on content that ships with the game and is consumed by players.

That means private brainstorming, internal coding assistance, automated testing, or a developer’s use of an AI tool to speed up production may not be the player-facing disclosure you expected. If AI-created code remains invisible to players and does not itself generate content during play, the store statement may still be consistent with Valve’s stated scope.
How can I tell whether the disclosure is inaccurate?
Compare the exact store-page statement with the content players receive, then classify the discrepancy before choosing a reporting channel. A visual oddity or a suspicion about a particular asset cannot, by itself, establish which tool made it.

- Save the store disclosure. Take screenshots or export a print-to-file copy showing the AI section, the game title, and the capture date. Copy the wording exactly, including whether it refers to pre-generated or live-generated content.
- Record the game build. Note the version number, branch or edition, platform, and the date you observed the behavior. A later patch may remove or add material.
- Preserve the disputed content. Capture screenshots or video that show the scene, dialogue, audio, localization, or generated output in context. Include enough surrounding information to show that it came from the game.
- Collect related statements. Save relevant credits, an in-game AI notice, a developer FAQ, patch notes, privacy notice, or an official post. Distinguish a developer statement from speculation by players.
- Write a short timeline. Include purchase date, first launch, when you encountered the material, and any update installed between those events.
Keep the files factual and unedited where possible. If a video is large, retain the original and provide a shorter clip only as a convenience. Do not expose another player’s personal information while documenting a live interaction.
Should I ask the developer first?
Usually, yes. A concise, neutral question gives the developer a chance to correct an outdated page or explain a category that is easy to misunderstand. Use the support email, forum, or contact link listed on the Steam store page.
What to include in the message
- The exact disclosure sentence and a screenshot of it.
- The game version, platform, and date of your observation.
- A description of the content that appears inconsistent, with a timestamp or scene name.
- One or two questions: Was this content made with an AI tool? Was it generated before release or during play? Does the current disclosure need updating?
- A request for a factual clarification or store-page correction, rather than an accusation.
For example: “The store page says [quote]. In build [version], at [location or timestamp], I encountered [observable content]. Is this pre-generated or live-generated AI content, and should the disclosure be revised?” Put variable text such as the quoted sentence inside your own message; do not alter the developer’s wording in your evidence.
Allow a reasonable opportunity for a reply, but do not assume that no response proves misconduct. Valve’s published materials do not promise a fixed investigation time or a particular result for every wording dispute.

How do I report illegal AI output in a Steam game?
Use Steam’s in-game overlay when live-generated output appears to violate the safeguards the developer is expected to maintain. Valve specifically describes this channel for content players believe should have been caught by appropriate guardrails on live AI generation. It is not presented as a guaranteed general-purpose adjudicator for every disagreement over disclosure wording.
- Leave the offending output visible or note its exact time and context, provided doing so is safe.
- Open the Steam in-game overlay using your configured overlay shortcut.
- Choose the game’s reporting option and submit the report about the live-generated content.
- Describe what appeared, when it appeared, and why you believe it is illegal or should have been blocked. Attach available screenshots or video if the form permits.
- Keep your original evidence and record the report date or confirmation number.
Do not deliberately provoke more harmful output to obtain evidence. If there is an immediate threat to a person’s safety, contact the appropriate emergency or law-enforcement service in your jurisdiction instead of relying only on a platform report.
How do I report an inaccurate store-page disclosure or purchase problem?
For a store-page statement, an unaddressed player-facing disclosure, or a purchase remedy, contact Steam Support at help.steampowered.com. Select the relevant game or purchase and explain the issue in chronological order.
- Sign in and open the support page for the specific game or transaction.
- Attach the store-page capture, build information, screenshots or video, and any developer correspondence.
- State the remedy you are requesting: clarification, correction of the listing, review of the disclosure, or a refund.
- Include the purchase date and current playtime. Keep the explanation factual and separate confirmed observations from conclusions.
- Save the ticket details and any follow-up response.
Steam’s current refund instruction says Valve will, on request through Steam Support, issue a refund for a title requested within 14 days of purchase and played for less than two hours. Requests outside either condition may still be submitted for review, but approval is discretionary rather than guaranteed. A disclosure dispute does not automatically override the normal refund process.

What are the EU and UK withdrawal rules?
Steam’s guidance for EU and UK digital purchases says the statutory withdrawal period generally ends 14 days after purchase or when downloading starts, whichever happens sooner. Steam’s voluntary refund policy may still provide a route under its own conditions. Your available legal remedies can depend on the country, the seller, the type of content, and the facts of the transaction.
If you are relying on statutory rights, preserve the receipt, the download date, and any notice about waiving withdrawal rights. Ask the relevant consumer-protection authority or a qualified adviser about local law; a platform support decision is not a legal determination.

What mistakes can weaken a report?
- Relying on appearance alone: A strange hand, repeated phrase, or unnatural voice may have many explanations. Describe the observable result without claiming a tool you cannot verify.
- Ignoring the timing: A patch can change the disclosure or the underlying asset. Tie every example to a version and date.
- Reporting the wrong category: The overlay route is described for illegal live-generated output; a wording dispute belongs with the developer or Steam Support.
- Overstating the remedy: A report can request review, but Valve does not promise delisting, correction, enforcement, or a refund in every case.
- Sending incomplete purchase details: Steam Support needs the transaction and playtime context to evaluate a refund request.
- Publishing personal data: Crop account names, email addresses, chat handles, and other unrelated identifiers before sharing evidence.
What should you do first?
Start by preserving the store statement and the exact in-game example. Then decide whether the material is pre-generated or live-generated, whether players consume it, and whether the concern is inaccurate wording, illegal output, or a refund request. Ask the developer for a factual explanation, use the in-game overlay for illegal live output, and send purchase or listing complaints to Steam Support with your documentation. This process gives each issue the channel Valve describes for it without assuming that every discrepancy is intentional or that any single report guarantees a particular result.

Can a game’s AI disclosure change after launch?
Yes. A patch can add, remove, or replace player-facing content, so the wording you saved may describe an earlier build. Compare the current listing with your recorded version and ask the developer whether the disclosure was updated for the change.
Does AI-assisted localization count as player-facing content?
Localization is consumed directly by players, so it is relevant when assessing whether the store statement accurately describes shipped content. Check the language, edition, and build you actually played rather than assuming every translation used the same process.
