Before buying a falling AI stock, find out whether the share price dropped because investors repriced the whole sector, the company’s business outlook worsened, or doubts grew about whether heavy AI investment will pay off. Then test the company’s reported demand, cash generation, valuation assumptions, funding needs and risks—and check how much AI exposure you already own elsewhere. A lower price alone does not make a stock a bargain: the useful question is whether its likely return from today’s price compensates you for the risks.
Why is the stock down?
Start with the cause of the decline, not the size of the decline. A pullback can reflect a broad change in investor appetite, company-specific deterioration or uncertainty about the returns on AI infrastructure spending. Those explanations imply different risks, and more than one can apply at once.

A broad repricing
Interest rates, risk appetite and crowded positioning can weigh on many stocks together, even when individual companies have not announced a comparable change in their businesses. MSCI characterized the 2026 correction as concentrated in hardware, data centers and energy, and as more consistent with a crowded-trade valuation unwind than a collapse in the AI growth story. That is a market interpretation, not proof that every affected stock is sound or that its price will recover.
A company-specific setback
Look for changes in reported revenue, margins, guidance, liquidity, customer demand or competitive position. A cut to a company’s outlook is different from a sector-wide sell-off: even if other AI shares rebound, a business whose economics have weakened may not.

Doubt about the spending cycle
Investors may question whether customers will use new infrastructure enough to justify its cost, or how long it will take for spending to produce revenue and cash. Morgan Stanley Research reported that AI-infrastructure shares fell nearly 7% in the month through July 24, 2026, as investors questioned unprecedented AI spending and potential returns. That figure describes a group of shares over that period, not the decline or prospects of any one company.
For context, U.S. Bank reported that AI-related companies increased capital expenditures 120% over the 12 months through July 2026. It also said investment-grade technology companies were on pace to issue $162 billion of bonds in 2026. These figures indicate the scale of investment and financing activity; they do not show that spending will earn an adequate return, and the bond figure is a pace estimate rather than a statement of final issuance.

Identify where the company sits in the AI supply chain before comparing it with other stocks. An application company, model provider and chipmaker do not earn revenue in the same way or face the same constraints.

These are questions to investigate, not guarantees about how every company in a category earns money. Read the issuer’s own disclosures to establish what it actually sells and who pays for it.
How much AI revenue is real?
Use reported financial information to distinguish paid business from claims about future opportunity. If a company does not separately report AI revenue, treat that amount as unquantified rather than estimating it from announcements, market size or management commentary.

- Find the latest documents. Check the company’s latest 10-K or 10-Q, earnings release, segment note and disclosures about material contracts. Use the most recent period available and note its reporting date.
- Identify what the number represents. Separate recurring subscriptions and usage from pilot programs, consulting, one-time hardware deliveries and promotional announcements. A contract, a pilot and recognized revenue are not interchangeable.
- Check how the company defines AI-linked sales. A business may bundle AI features into a broader product or report them within a segment. Do not treat the whole segment as AI revenue unless the company’s disclosure supports that interpretation.
- Record what is not disclosed. If the filing does not break out AI sales, label them unquantified. Avoid turning a management estimate, customer announcement or industry forecast into reported revenue.
- Compare periods and definitions. Check whether the company’s definition or reporting changed. When comparing competitors, use consistent definitions and distinguish adjusted measures from GAAP results.
Backlog, bookings and customer commitments can offer context about future demand, but they are not the same as recognized revenue or cash already collected. Consider customer concentration and whether demand appears repeatable; a large order from one customer can matter greatly while leaving the business exposed if that buyer changes plans.

Sales growth alone cannot show whether a company can fund its plans or create value for shareholders. Trace the path from reported revenue through costs, investment and financing, and pay attention to what happens to each share.
- Margins: Track gross margin and operating margin over time. Consider whether growth is accompanied by improving economics or by rising costs to deliver the product.
- Operating cash flow: Compare cash from operations with reported earnings and revenue. Working-capital changes can affect cash in a period, so look at the explanation rather than treating one result as a trend.
- Free cash flow after necessary investment: Account for capital expenditure needed to build or maintain the business. A company may report strong operating cash flow while substantial investment leaves little cash available afterward.
- Research spending: Examine the resources required to develop and improve products. Cutting research may lift near-term results but could affect competitiveness; rising spending also needs to be assessed against the company’s ability to fund it.
- Stock-based compensation and diluted shares: Track both the expense and the diluted share count. If the business repeatedly issues shares, company growth may not translate into the same growth for each existing share.
- Borrowing and liquidity: Review debt, cash and the ability to meet obligations while investing. A capital-intensive growth plan can become more difficult to fund if cash generation disappoints or financing costs rise.
The key is not whether one metric looks strong in isolation. A fast-growing company can still destroy per-share value if it must keep issuing stock or borrowing to finance expansion without earning adequate returns.
Is the valuation attractive after the fall?
Rebuild the valuation using a measure that fits the business, then ask what the current price assumes. The relevant comparison is between the expected return from today’s price and the risks required to achieve it—not today’s share price versus its previous high.
Make the assumptions visible
Depending on the company’s business and financial profile, valuation work may use enterprise value against a revenue, earnings or cash-flow measure. Choose a metric that reflects the economics of the company; do not compare businesses using a measure that one cannot reasonably support. Record the assumptions behind the price for growth, margins, reinvestment, long-term results and dilution rather than relying on a single headline multiple.

Stress a plausible downside
Ask how the valuation changes if growth slows, prices fall, compute or energy costs rise, profitability is delayed or financing becomes more expensive. Also consider whether the company needs further investment before it can generate the cash flow implied by the valuation. A stock can be cheaper than it was and still be expensive relative to a more realistic outlook.
Do not treat a price target or a peer multiple as a substitute for those assumptions. Peers may differ in revenue definitions, margins, cash generation, capital needs and dilution. If one company presents an adjusted measure and another reports a GAAP result, reconcile the definitions before drawing a conclusion.
Can the company fund its buildout?
Estimate what the company must spend to deliver its plans and where the money will come from. Capital expenditure is an important clue to the AI infrastructure cycle, but it is an imperfect measure of AI demand.
The Federal Reserve Board describes hyperscaler capital expenditure as “arguably one of the main demand-side proxies for AI infrastructure.” It also cautions that the proxy is imperfect: hyperscaler spending includes non-AI investment, while leased capacity can be missed. Therefore, rising capex can signal infrastructure demand without telling you how much is specifically for AI or whether customers will use that capacity profitably.
Track the sequence behind the spending: construction, permitting, power availability, equipment delivery, utilization and customer financing. A project that is announced or under construction has not yet demonstrated that its capacity will be used enough to earn a return. Check whether the company’s own balance sheet can support its plans, whether it relies on borrowing or new share issuance, and what happens if the buildout takes longer than expected.

The gap between spending and revenue matters. BlackRock Investment Institute summarized the timing challenge in 2025: “Investment is front-loaded while revenues are back-loaded.” That does not mean the investment will fail; it means the company may need to carry substantial costs before the associated revenue arrives.
What dependencies could break the investment case?
Read the risk factors and disclosures for dependencies that could disrupt demand, delivery or financing. A company’s position in the AI ecosystem may expose it to bottlenecks beyond its direct control.
- Customer concentration: Determine whether a small number of buyers account for significant revenue or future demand.
- Supplier and platform dependence: Look for reliance on one cloud provider, chip supplier or other critical partner.
- Power, construction and permitting: Check whether electricity and data-center capacity can be delivered on schedule and approved where needed.
- Trade and supply-chain exposure: Consider export restrictions, trade changes and dependence on constrained components.
- Intellectual property and competition: Review disclosed disputes and the possibility that competing products put pressure on pricing or demand.
- Cybersecurity, privacy and regulation: Consider whether legal or security requirements could affect product use, costs or customer adoption.
Company disclosures can make demand dependencies explicit. AMD’s 2026 10-Q risk disclosure states: “The demand for such products will in part depend on the extent to which our customers utilize generative AI solutions.” That is a reminder to distinguish a supplier’s opportunity to serve AI demand from proof that customers will ultimately adopt products at a profitable scale.
How should you compare two AI stocks?
Compare like with like, using the same time periods and definitions. A checklist prevents a compelling headline, different accounting measure or unquantified AI claim from dominating the comparison.

When a comparable figure is not disclosed, record that it is not stated rather than filling the gap with a guess. Missing disclosure is itself a limitation on how confidently you can compare the businesses.
How much AI exposure do you already have?
Check your full portfolio before adding another position. A single stock may overlap with broad technology funds, thematic ETFs, employer shares or options, so your actual exposure can be larger than the individual position suggests.
- List direct holdings. Include individual stocks, employer stock and options, not just funds.
- Check fund holdings and weights. Review the current holdings of broad-market and thematic funds to identify repeated exposure to the same companies or AI infrastructure layer.
- Set a position limit. Decide in advance how much of your portfolio you are willing to put at risk in one company or in related AI businesses.
- Choose a buying approach that fits your plan. If you choose to stage purchases, decide the conditions and amounts beforehand rather than treating every further decline as an automatic reason to add.
- Write down thesis-break conditions. Identify the business changes that would make you reconsider—such as weaker demand, deteriorating margins, financing problems or a shift in competitive position.
Diversification can reduce the risk of depending on one company, but it cannot remove exposure to a shared AI investment cycle. Invesco reported that data-center investment contributed 1.1 percentage points to U.S. GDP growth in the first half of 2025. It also reported that AI-linked names accounted for more than half of S&P 500 returns and almost one third of global equity returns in 2025, as of the end of October. Those figures describe economic and market concentration at the stated times; they do not guarantee returns for a particular stock or fund.

A short decision record makes it easier to distinguish a reasoned purchase from a reaction to a falling chart. Keep the evidence and assumptions tied to the date you made the decision, since filings, prices and market conditions change.
- The event or evidence behind the decline, and whether it is broad, company-specific or tied to return uncertainty.
- The company’s AI business layer and the latest reported evidence of paid demand.
- Revenue, margins, cash flow after necessary investment, research spending and diluted share-count trend.
- The valuation metric and assumptions you are using, including a downside case.
- The funding plan for the buildout and the dependencies most likely to delay or weaken it.
- Your existing portfolio overlap, intended position size and conditions that would invalidate the thesis.
A general checklist cannot determine a fair value or suitable allocation for a specific reader. That judgment depends on current company filings and market price as well as your time horizon, tax situation, liquidity needs and risk tolerance. Recheck volatile figures and the latest disclosures immediately before acting.

What does it mean when a stock is “buying the dip”?
It means purchasing shares after their price has fallen, usually in expectation that the business or market will recover. The phrase describes a timing strategy, not evidence that the shares are undervalued.
Should I wait for an AI stock to stop falling before buying?
A price chart alone cannot establish that a decline is over. A more useful decision rule is to specify what business evidence would support a purchase and what new information would change your view.

They can, but the effect would differ by company: some depend more directly on new infrastructure investment, while others may depend on adoption, recurring customer use or lower delivery costs. The company’s own revenue mix and cost structure determine how much a slowdown matters.
Why can a company report strong earnings but still issue more shares?
Earnings are not the same as cash available for expansion, debt repayment or other obligations. A company may use equity to finance investment or compensation, so investors should examine diluted share counts alongside earnings and cash flow.
