Before paying, confirm the MacBook’s exact model and serial number, make sure it can be erased and activated without the previous owner’s Apple Account, check battery health and coverage, and test the hardware. Get the shop’s return or warranty terms and an itemized receipt in writing. If the shop will not let you perform basic checks—or the Mac still asks for someone else’s credentials—walk away.
1. Confirm the exact MacBook model and serial number
Ask to see the Mac powered on. In macOS, open Apple menu > About This Mac to view its model name and serial number. For more detail, open System Information and check the serial number, model identifier, and model number. Compare those details with the shop’s listing or price tag and the machine in front of you. Apple explains how to identify a Mac and find its serial number at Identify your MacBook model.

An identifier mismatch is a reason to ask questions, not proof by itself that the Mac is counterfeit. Apple notes that after a logic-board replacement, the serial number on the case or packaging may no longer be the active one. Ask for repair documentation and an explanation that matches the identifiers shown in macOS.

2. Make sure Activation Lock is removed
Activation Lock is a security feature intended to prevent others from using a Mac if it is lost or stolen. On supported Macs, it can require the linked Apple Account password or device passcode to turn off Find My, erase the Mac, or activate it. Apple describes the feature in its Activation Lock for Mac guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning 13.3-inch Retina display
- Touch ID and the latest Apple-designed keyboard
- Dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor with Intel UHD Graphics 617
- Fast SSD storage and 8GB memory
- Stereo speakers with wider stereo sound
Have the shop remove the previous owner’s account and erase the Mac before you pay. The practical test is whether it can proceed through setup and activation without asking for the prior owner’s Apple Account credentials. If that cannot be demonstrated, do not buy it; a serial-number lookup or a promise that the seller will unlock it later is not a substitute.
3. Check battery health and cycle count for that model
On the Mac, open System Settings > Battery > Battery Health to review the reported condition. For cycle count, open System Information > Hardware > Power. Menu labels can vary by macOS version, but System Information’s Power section is where Apple documents the cycle count.

- Retina display; 13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology (2560x1600 native resolution)
- Apple M1 chip with 8 cores (4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores), a 7-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine
- 8GB memory | 128GB SSD
- Backlit Magic Keyboard | Touch ID sensor | 720p FaceTime HD camera
- 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 wireless networking, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac compatible | Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology
Do not apply one cycle-count cutoff to every MacBook: Apple sets different maximum cycle counts by model. Apple says a battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count. Reaching that limit does not mean the Mac cannot be used, but runtime may be reduced and replacement may be recommended. Compare the count with the limit for the exact model using Apple’s battery cycle count information, and consider actual battery runtime as well as the status shown in macOS.
4. Inspect the machine and test what you can
Look over the specific unit rather than relying on stock photos or a verbal condition grade. With the shop’s permission, check these areas:

- Stunning 13.3-inch Retina display with True Tone technology
- Backlit Magic Keyboard and Touch ID
- Tenth-generation Intel Core i3 processor
- Intel Iris Plus Graphics
- 8GB of memory
- Enclosure, screen, and hinge: Look for dents, cracks, screen marks, uneven gaps, or a hinge that feels loose or stiff.
- Keyboard and trackpad: Try several keys and gestures; check for sticking, missed input, or erratic clicking.
- Ports and charging: Inspect the ports and connect the charger to confirm the Mac recognizes power.
- Camera, speakers, and Wi-Fi: Test each function if the shop permits it.
- Diagnostics: Ask whether you may run Apple Diagnostics, which can help identify some hardware issues.
Ask whether the Mac has been repaired or had parts replaced, and request service records if available. Apple’s warranty terms exclude some accidental or liquid damage, unauthorized service, and altered or removed serial numbers; a used machine’s warranty status and actual condition are separate things. See Apple’s Mac warranty terms for the applicable exclusions.
5. Check Apple coverage, but understand what it tells you
Enter the Mac’s serial number on Apple’s coverage lookup before you buy, and save a screenshot or other record of the result. The page can show coverage and benefits associated with that serial number. Coverage may have expired, and the lookup does not establish the Mac’s physical condition, ownership, or whether it has been reported stolen.

6. Compare the total value, not just the sticker price
There is no single fair price for “a used MacBook”: compare units with the same exact model and configuration, then account for verified condition, battery health and likely replacement needs, remaining coverage, repair history, charger and other included accessories, and the shop’s return terms. If something needs service, include that likely cost when deciding whether the price makes sense. Current market prices vary, so verify comparable listings for the specific configuration rather than relying on a broad model label such as “MacBook Air.”
7. Get the terms and transaction details in writing
Before handing over money, ask what returns or warranty coverage the shop offers and have the terms written on the receipt or a separate document. Keep an itemized receipt with the seller’s name and contact details, date, price, and the Mac’s serial number and description. Apple lists device description, purchase date, receipt number, price, reseller contact information, and serial number among the purchase details it may request when correcting a purchase date; see Apple’s Mac identification and purchase documentation guidance. Return rights and warranty obligations can depend on local law and the specific sale, so do not assume one rule applies everywhere.
