The strongest choice depends on the Trial, its modifiers, and the problem you most need to solve: surviving a mistake, finding threats, carrying more items, or clearing obstacles. A practical starting point is Stun for an emergency response, with a recovery-focused Amp such as Self Revive if it is available to you. Treat that as a mechanics-based recommendation, not a proven top build.
How to choose a solo loadout
Pick the Rig to address the Trial’s biggest threat or objective, then choose Amps to cover your main constraint. Compare options on four useful axes:

- Survival buffer: What helps if you make a mistake or take damage?
- Objective speed: Can a choice remove an obstacle or make progress easier?
- Information and stealth: Will it help you locate threats or stay out of their way?
- Resource and cooldown economy: Do you need more inventory capacity or more frequent Rig use?
Red Barrels’ May 2023 Early Access update advised players to “equip the best loadout for each Trial.” That is useful general advice, not a solo ranking, and Trial conditions and Variators can change what a build needs to handle. Red Barrels’ Early Access update predates current seasons, so use it alongside current Trial details and later update notes.
Which Rig should you use solo?
Rig choice is situational rather than a fixed hierarchy. These documented effects are described in Red Barrels’ March 2024 v1.0 notes; later balance changes may affect current behavior, so check the in-game descriptions when exact effects matter.

Stun: a quick response to danger
Stun is a reasonable general-purpose pick when you want a way to respond quickly to a threat. The v1.0 notes describe its cooldown as reduced to 120 seconds. That figure is from the March 2024 update, not confirmation of the current cooldown. Consider it when immediate control matters more to you than scouting or healing.
X-Ray: information and scouting
X-Ray is worth considering when locating threats or gathering information from concealment helps with your route. The v1.0 notes say it became usable from hiding spots. Pair it with a carrying-capacity Amp if the Trial’s demands make extra items more valuable than another recovery option.
Heal: recovery while concealed
Heal can be used while in a hiding spot, according to the v1.0 notes. It offers a self-care option, but that does not make it categorically stronger than Stun, X-Ray, or another Rig; choose it when healing is the problem your setup most needs to address.

What Amps should you use solo?
Choose Amps for a specific gap in your setup rather than treating any one combination as mandatory. The effects below are from the March 2024 v1.0 notes and should be checked against current in-game descriptions.

Practical solo presets by problem
These presets are editorial recommendations based on the documented effects above. They are not controlled comparisons, and the best fit depends on Trial demands, your unlocks, and your play style.
Baseline safety
Try Stun with Self Revive if both options are available. Stun addresses immediate danger; Self Revive offers one resurrection per Trial. This is a sensible starting point if you want an emergency response and a recovery buffer, not a claim that the combination wins more often.

Scouting and carrying
Try X-Ray with Backpack when information and extra item capacity solve the problems you expect to face. This setup makes less sense if the Trial calls for a different kind of emergency response or you do not need the additional slot.

Obstacle clearing and route flexibility
Consider Smash when doors and planks are obstacles on your route. Breaking them in one strike can make it a useful objective-oriented choice, but whether it is preferable depends on the Trial and the route you take.
Frequent Rig use
Consider Hide and Restore if you expect to use hiding spots and benefit from faster Rig cooldown recovery. It is a resource-management choice, not a substitute for selecting a Rig that addresses the main threat.

Recovery while hidden
Consider Heal when self-care is the priority and you can make use of its documented ability to work in a hiding spot. Choose it for that specific need rather than assuming it is the default solo Rig.

The July 14, 2026 Season 7 update introduced Rig customization and up to three saved loadouts that players can switch between before a Trial. That makes it practical to keep separate builds for different objectives or modifiers instead of trying to make one preset cover every situation. Red Barrels’ September 8, 2026 update says player loadouts are displayed in the pause menu.
Check the rules for the mode you are entering. Red Barrels’ July 2026 notes describe a Hardcore weekly Escalation theme with no respawns in solo play, as well as persistent maximum-health loss in higher Endless Escalation Trials. Those are mode-specific rules; do not assume they apply to ordinary Trials. The same July notes describe an instant Electric Disruption effect for Jammer against Imposters in Invasion. That Invasion-specific change should not be generalized to solo PvE Trials.
What the available patch notes do—and do not—establish
Red Barrels’ official updates document mechanics and changes, but the cited sources do not provide a solo tier list, controlled comparison of builds, or comparative win rates. The detailed Rig and Amp effects used here come from the March 2024 v1.0 update, while the July and September 2026 notes provide newer information on presets, mode rules, and the pause menu. The September 17, 2026 hotfix addressed reported bugs and crashes without announcing Rig or Amp balance changes. Because later balance changes may still affect specific effects, check the in-game descriptions for current details.
The Chemical Leak event mentioned in the September update ran until October 6, 2026; it is not an active event as of October 7, 2026.
