How to Use a Haptic Mat to Relax Without Disrupting Sleep

A haptic mat can be used for a brief wind-down while awake. Muting audio may not prevent vibration from traveling through a shared bed.

Use a haptic mat for a brief wind-down while you are still awake, keep its vibration at a comfortable level, and mute audio if you want a quiet session. Before using it near bedtime—or beside someone else—check whether the vibration itself can be heard or felt through the bed. Muted sound does not guarantee a disturbance-free experience.

What a haptic mat does

A haptic mat turns audio signals into physical vibration. For example, Woojer describes its MAT as a full-body vibroacoustic wellness mat that converts low-frequency content from music, meditations, or soundscapes into physical sensation. Woojer says the MAT can connect through Bluetooth, USB-C, or an audio cable; features and controls vary by product. Woojer MAT product information.

How to use a Woojer MAT quietly

  1. Choose content and start it while awake. Woojer support says the MAT can be used without headphones or speakers. Start content in the app or from your connected source. Woojer’s headphone- and speaker-free instructions.
  2. Mute audible output. Lower media volume to zero as described in Woojer’s instructions. The haptic signal can continue while audible output is muted.
  3. Begin gently and keep the first trial short. Set the vibration to a level that feels comfortable, and remain awake so you can tell whether it feels calming or distracting. Woojer lists app sessions of five to thirty minutes; this is a product-specific session range, not a medically established sleep routine. Its FAQ says the MAT and MAT Plus automatically switch off after 60 minutes. Woojer FAQ.
  4. Stop or reduce intensity if it feels alerting. The goal is a comfortable wind-down, not pushing through an unpleasant or stimulating sensation.

Check whether vibration could disturb someone else

Muting audio addresses sound from the phone, speakers, or headphones, but it does not establish that the mat’s vibration is inaudible or isolated from a bed partner. A 2025 paper about a different device—a haptic pillow sleeve—notes that vibration from a bed shaker can travel through a mattress and disturb a co-sleeper. That is a reason to test your actual setup, not evidence that the Woojer MAT will necessarily disturb another person. UCL Discovery paper on a haptic pillow sleeve.

  • Try the mat before the other person is asleep, and ask whether they can hear or feel it from their side of the bed.
  • If vibration carries across the shared surface, use the mat somewhere that does not transmit it to the bed, or skip it during shared sleep time.
  • Do not assume that a zero-volume setting solves vibration transfer; check both sound and physical movement.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Woojer identifies the MAT as a wellness product, not a medical device, and says it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. The available sources do not establish through an independent, product-specific clinical trial that the MAT improves sleep or prevents sleep disruption. Treat relaxation and sleep benefits as unproven for this product, rather than as treatment claims. Woojer’s product disclaimer.
