Before paying for a discounted, used, or refurbished MacBook, confirm its exact configuration, make sure Activation Lock is off, check battery condition, test key hardware, and get the seller’s warranty and return terms in writing. “Refurbished” can mean Apple Certified Refurbished or simply a seller’s description; the protections are not automatically the same.
Start with the exact model and configuration
Match the computer in front of you to the listing and receipt. In macOS, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac; use System Information if you need more detail. Check the model or chip, screen size, unified memory, and storage—not just the broad name “MacBook Pro” or “MacBook Air.” Configuration can materially change whether a price is fair or whether the Mac will suit your work.

Compare the final price with a new or manufacturer-certified equivalent that has the same or comparable configuration. For instance, one Apple Canada Education Store listing described a refurbished 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 chip, 16GB of unified memory, and a 512GB SSD. Those specifications identify that particular listing, not every refurbished MacBook. See the Apple Canada listing.

Ask the seller to sign out of their Apple Account and turn off Find My, then erase the Mac while you are present. Continue through setup far enough to confirm it activates and can be set up without requesting the previous owner’s credentials. Apple states that an Apple Account password or device passcode is required to turn off Find My, erase, or reactivate a Mac protected by Activation Lock. Apple’s Activation Lock guidance explains the lock and removal process.

If the Mac is offline, its owner may be able to remove it through iCloud Find Devices. Do not accept a promise that the seller will clear the lock later. If they cannot remove it and demonstrate that you can activate the Mac, walk away.
Check battery condition and cycle count
Open System Information > Hardware > Power and note the battery cycle count. Compare it with Apple’s limit for the exact model; cycle limits vary across Mac laptops. Apple’s cycle-count instructions and model table explain where to find the count and how to interpret the limit.
A cycle count is not a runtime test. Ask to see the battery condition or capacity reported in macOS and, if possible, observe that the Mac charges and runs on battery. Apple says a battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions; that is a design statement, not a promise about the present capacity of an individual used Mac. Chemical age and charging history also matter. Apple’s battery-health explanation covers the qualification.

- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- Go longer than ever with up to 18 hours of battery life
- Up to eight GPU cores with up to 5x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games
Price in the possibility of battery service if capacity or observed runtime is poor. The cycle count alone cannot tell you the Mac’s actual runtime or replacement cost.
Inspect and exercise the hardware
Test the actual computer rather than relying only on a seller’s grade or a diagnostic result. Inspect the display for dead pixels, discoloration, flicker, or other visible defects; check the chassis and hinges for damage; and try the keyboard, trackpad, ports, charger, camera, microphones, speakers, Wi-Fi, and charging. Confirm that included accessories match the listing.
Where possible, run Apple Diagnostics. On Apple silicon, start up to startup options, then press and hold Command-D. On an Intel Mac, start up while holding D; if that does not work, try Option-D. Diagnostics may identify a hardware component that could be at fault and provide reference codes, but it is not a substitute for visual and functional checks. Follow Apple’s current Diagnostics instructions for the Mac in question.

Ask about repairs and parts
On supported Apple silicon Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, open System Settings > General > About and look for Parts & Service. The section appears only when macOS detects a repair; it may show labels such as Genuine, Unknown, Unverified, or Used. Its availability is limited by model and software, so a missing section does not prove the Mac has never been repaired. Apple explains Parts & Service history and the meaning of the labels.
Ask the seller what repairs were done and request records. Treat any status label as one piece of information, not a complete condition report; find out what part was repaired and whether the work is documented.
Separate Apple Certified Refurbished from a seller’s “refurbished” label
Apple’s US Certified Refurbished page says its products include a one-year warranty, full functional testing, and savings of up to 15%. These are Apple’s program claims; the discount varies by product and comparison price. The page showed a refurbished 14-inch MacBook Pro at $1,439 against $1,599 when accessed in 2026, but inventory and pricing can change. Check the live Apple Certified Refurbished store rather than treating that price as current.

- Touch Bar and Touch ID
- Backlit Magic Keyboard
- Brilliant Retina display with True Tone technology
A generic seller’s “refurbished” description does not establish the same testing, warranty, battery standard, or return rights. Ask for those terms for the exact unit and listing. A specific Apple Canada Education Store refurbished MacBook Pro listing stated a one-year limited warranty and a 15-day return policy, and included a 70W USB-C power adapter and USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. Those are terms of that regional listing, not universal terms for other Apple listings or sellers. Check the listing’s details directly.

Use the serial number to check Apple’s coverage record, and ask for the original receipt if the displayed purchase date is wrong. Apple cautions that estimated dates can be incorrect and that recently submitted information may not yet appear. Its coverage tool also does not show every right you may have under consumer law. See Apple’s warranty-coverage guidance.
Separately, get the following details from the seller in writing before you commit:

Compare two listings on the same terms
Use a like-for-like comparison instead of choosing by discount percentage alone. Record the actual configuration, condition, likely battery exposure, seller protections, and total cost; then judge fit against your own apps and workload.
| What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Model and configuration | Model/year or chip, screen size, memory, and storage. |
| Physical and functional condition | Display, chassis, keyboard, trackpad, ports, camera, audio, Wi-Fi, charging, and diagnostic results. |
| Battery | Cycle count versus the exact model’s limit, macOS condition/capacity, observed operation, and possible service exposure. |
| Repairs | Available Parts & Service information, seller’s repair history, and supporting records. |
| Lock and coverage | Successful activation after the seller removes Activation Lock; Apple coverage record and receipt if needed. |
| Sale terms | Seller identity, final price, warranty, return window and procedure, condition grade, battery policy, and included charger and cable. |
| Workload fit | Whether the specific configuration meets your needs compared with a new or manufacturer-certified equivalent. |
Do not treat a low price as evidence of a bargain until the lock is cleared, the configuration is confirmed, and the condition and seller protections are understood. No general failure-rate or lifespan figure can determine whether an individual Mac is a sound purchase; the unit’s checks and written terms matter.
