If those checks do not resolve a persistent problem, arrange service for the affected controller.
First, identify when the problem happens
These steps cover Joy-Con 2 controllers, which Nintendo says are compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2. Confirm which controller is affected and whether the problem occurs while it is attached, used wirelessly, or only in one game. Nintendo separates button, stick, wireless-response, and controller-recognition issues in its Switch 2 controller troubleshooting index; a connection or recognition issue is not the same as stick drift.
If the controller is not recognized or the problem occurs only when using it wirelessly, consult the relevant troubleshooting topic in that index rather than treating it as a button or calibration fault.

Fix sticky or unresponsive buttons
Clean a sticky button safely
- Power off the console.
- Gently brush around the affected button with a soft, dry toothbrush. Do not use cleaners or fluids.
- Power the console back on and check whether the button works.

Check for a system update or changed button mapping
Check that the console has the latest system update. If a prompt says the connected controller’s button mapping changed, follow the prompt to reset the mapping. A remapped input can make a working button appear broken.

Run the supported-button test
Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Test Input Devices > Test Controller Buttons. Press the suspect button and see whether its icon registers. This test does not include HOME, Capture, C, POWER, volume, or SYNC.
If a recognized, attached Joy-Con 2 fails this test, Nintendo says the controller needs service; for this issue, send the affected controller, not the console. HOME or C failures on a recognized right Joy-Con 2 also warrant service. If the button fails only in one game or app, check its instructions: that input may not be supported there.

Fix stick drift or incorrect stick response
Rule out remapping and outdated software
Look for a wrench icon beside the active controller, which indicates that its inputs have been remapped. Review or reset the button mapping if it does not match your intended controls. Then check for the latest console system update and update the powered-on controllers at System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. If a controller update stops before completion, Nintendo advises trying again.
Remove covers and calibrate the stick
Remove any skin or cover from the affected controller and stick. Then open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Calibrate Control Sticks and follow the on-screen test and calibration prompts. Nintendo’s UK calibration guidance also recommends calibration as an early troubleshooting step.

Check whether the problem is limited to one game
If the stick behaves incorrectly in just one game, check for a game update and read the game’s electronic manual. Game-specific settings can change how input feels: Nintendo cites Mario Kart World as an example where activated tilt controls can make stick behavior seem incorrect. A symptom limited to one game is a reason to inspect that game’s controls before concluding the controller is faulty.
If the stick feels physically stuck
- Power off the console.
- Gently brush around the stick with a clean, dry toothbrush, then wipe away debris with a soft, dry cloth.
- Power the console on. Calibrate only if the stick still has a problem; Nintendo advises against calibrating when there is no issue.
If the stick remains stuck, is hard to press, or is hard to move, Nintendo directs owners to arrange service. See Nintendo’s guidance for a stuck or hard-to-press stick.

When to seek service or consider replacement
Contact Nintendo or the authorized service center for your region if a recognized Joy-Con 2 still fails the supported-button test, cannot be calibrated, or responds incorrectly after the checks above. Nintendo’s US and Canada instructions for the listed button and stick issues say to send the non-working Joy-Con 2, not the console; elsewhere, use the nearest authorized service center. Service eligibility, warranty coverage, cost, and turnaround can vary by region, so confirm those details with Nintendo locally.
If you choose replacement rather than service, check the model carefully: the relevant product is a Joy-Con 2 controller for Nintendo Switch 2. Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con have a separate compatibility profile. Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessories page identifies the Switch 2 accessory range.
