Start with the current requirements for the specific game or application, then account for the workload you will run and other programs you keep open. Adobe, for example, recommends 16 GB of system RAM for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K-and-higher work in Premiere Pro on Windows; local AI applications can also specify GPU memory separately from system RAM.
How to choose a RAM capacity
Use the software’s published requirements as your starting point, not a number meant to cover every computer. Requirements differ by application, task, and configuration. Minimum requirements indicate a baseline for running software; recommended requirements are a better planning reference, but do not guarantee a particular experience across every project or workload.

- Look up the current requirements for the games, editor, or AI application you actually use.
- Match the requirements to your workload, such as HD versus 4K editing or the particular local AI model and runtime.
- Check whether those requirements refer to system RAM, GPU VRAM, or both.
- Consider which other applications will be open at the same time. The available sources do not quantify a universal amount of extra RAM for multitasking.
Gaming: check each game’s requirements
There is no evidence-backed universal RAM recommendation for all current games in the sources available here. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements list 4 GB or greater memory as an operating-system requirement and caution that “Game requirements may vary.” That 4 GB figure is for Windows 11, not a gaming recommendation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore choosing a system or upgrading, check the current requirements for the games you intend to play. Also account for other software you plan to run alongside a game; the requirements for a game alone may not describe your full workload.

Video editing: Adobe Premiere Pro recommendations
Adobe’s technical requirements page, last updated September 16, 2026, applies to Premiere versions 26.0, 26.2, 26.3, 26.3.2, 26.5, and 26.5.1. For Windows, it lists 8 GB as the minimum and recommends different capacities by media resolution:
| Premiere Pro on Windows | Adobe’s system-memory specification |
|---|---|
| Minimum | 8 GB RAM |
| HD media | 16 GB RAM recommended |
| 4K and higher | 32 GB or more recommended |
These are Adobe’s product requirements, not a guarantee of editing performance for every codec, effect, sequence, or multitasking setup. Adobe lists GPU and storage requirements separately, so system RAM is only one part of an editing system. See Adobe’s Premiere Pro technical requirements for the applicable version and full specifications.

For macOS, Adobe lists 8 GB minimum and recommends 16 GB of unified memory for Apple silicon. That is unified memory, not a conventional replaceable RAM kit. Adobe’s professional video and audio hardware guide offers broader context, but the version-specific requirements page is the more direct source for Premiere’s stated requirements.
Local AI: check system RAM and GPU VRAM separately
“AI workload” can mean different applications, models, and graphics configurations, so examples from individual programs should not be treated as a general minimum. When an application publishes both system-memory and graphics-memory requirements, compare each against the hardware in your computer: RAM and GPU VRAM are distinct resources.

Local Spirit
The Local Spirit Steam listing for its stated 14B local language model specifies 16 GB of system RAM minimum and 32 GB recommended. It separately specifies at least 11 GB of GPU VRAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended. The listing says performance can vary with GPU, drivers, runtime configuration, context size, and available system memory. These are requirements for Local Spirit, not a standard for every local AI application.
Pixel Q
The Steam listing for Pixel Q, an Ollama-powered local assistant, specifies 16 GB of system RAM minimum and 32 GB recommended, alongside separate graphics requirements. Those figures apply to Pixel Q and should not be generalized to unrelated models or tools.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
For the application you plan to run, check its current requirements for the selected model, runtime, context, and graphics setup. A figure for system RAM does not tell you how much GPU VRAM is needed, or vice versa.

Check whether your computer can be upgraded
Before buying memory, confirm that the computer supports an upgrade and that any new memory matches its specifications. Laptop and desktop designs differ, and some systems do not allow user-installed RAM. Apple silicon systems use unified memory, so ordinary advice about installing a replaceable RAM kit does not apply.
Quick Recap
- Confirm whether memory is replaceable or soldered, and whether the system can be upgraded at all.
- Check the supported memory generation, form factor, and maximum capacity for the exact computer model.
- For an AI application, compare its system-RAM and GPU-VRAM requirements separately with the hardware you have.
- For an upgradeable system, choose a compatible memory kit only after verifying those details.
