What Really Happens When You Log In—and Log Out of—a Website

Logging in does two separate things: it verifies an identity, then creates a session that the website can recognize on later requests. In a typical browser, that session is represented by an opaque identifier in a secure cookie and a matching record on the server. Logging out should invalidate that server record and remove the browser’s session state.

Federated sign-in adds more layers. An identity provider may keep its own login session, while OAuth access or refresh tokens can have different lifetimes from the website session. That is why signing out of one site does not always sign you out of every service.

What happens when you log in to a website?

A login request carries some form of proof: a password, passkey, security-key response, one-time code, or an assertion from another service. The website verifies that proof, applies account and policy checks, and then establishes its own application session.

  1. The browser submits proof. Credentials or an authentication response are sent to the site’s login endpoint, normally over HTTPS.
  2. The server verifies it. The application checks the proof against the account, confirms that the account is allowed to sign in, and evaluates controls such as multifactor requirements, account status, and device or risk rules.
  3. The application creates a session. The server generates a random, opaque session identifier and associates it with a server-side record containing the account, privileges, creation time, and expiry policy.
  4. The browser receives session state. Usually the server sends the identifier in a cookie. The browser stores it and automatically includes it on matching requests.
  5. Later requests are mapped to the account. The server looks up the identifier, checks that the session is still valid, and applies the permissions in the session record.

The cookie is a bearer secret: whoever presents a valid value may be treated as that session. It is not proof that the account owner is physically at the keyboard, and it normally contains no readable profile information. NIST identifies cookies as the predominant mechanism for creating and tracking browser sessions.

Why the website creates a new session after authentication

Reusing an identifier that existed before login can allow session fixation. A secure application therefore rotates the session identifier when authentication succeeds and again when privileges change, such as after enabling an administrator role. The old identifier should stop working.

What is a browser session cookie?

A session cookie is the client-side handle for a server-controlled session. The meaningful data—account identity, permissions, timestamps, and revocation status—normally remains in a server-side record.

Property What it means Why it matters
Opaque value A random string with no human-readable account data Limits information leakage and makes guessing impractical
Secure Sent only over HTTPS Reduces exposure while the cookie is in transit
HttpOnly Unavailable to ordinary browser JavaScript Helps prevent scripts from directly reading the session identifier
SameSite Controls when the browser sends the cookie in cross-site requests Reduces, but does not eliminate, cross-site request-forgery risk
Host and path scope Limits which hosts and URLs receive the cookie Restricts accidental disclosure to unrelated application areas

NIST SP 800-63B-4 (July 2025) recommends HTTPS-only session cookies, the minimum practical hostnames and paths, an opaque value, and appropriate use of HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax or SameSite=Strict, and the __Host- prefix with Path=/ where applicable. Cookie expiration should correspond to the intended session lifetime, but NIST says expiration alone must not enforce a timeout; the server must reject an expired session.

How does federated or “Sign in with another service” login work?

Federated login moves the initial identity check to an identity provider, but the relying website still needs to establish its own session. The browser is redirected to an authorization endpoint, the user authenticates there, and the browser returns to a registered redirect endpoint with an authorization response.

  1. The application starts a transaction and records which browser initiated it.
  2. The browser is redirected to the authorization server.
  3. The identity provider authenticates the user and obtains any required consent.
  4. The provider sends an authorization response to the application’s registered redirect URI.
  5. The application validates the response, exchanges a code when applicable, maps the result to an account, and creates its own browser session.

OAuth is an authorization framework, not the website’s login session. An OAuth access token authorizes calls to a service on a user’s behalf; it does not replace the application’s session cookie. OpenID Connect adds an identity assertion, but the relying party still controls its local session.

Why PKCE, state, and nonce are transaction-specific

Modern OAuth security guidance in RFC 9700 (January 2025) requires defenses against authorization-code injection and cross-site request forgery. Public clients using the authorization-code grant must use PKCE. The code-verifier challenge, or an OpenID Connect nonce, must be bound to the particular transaction and user agent. If those protections are not used by a flow, a one-time state value securely bound to the browser is required for CSRF protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A static state value, a value shared between users, or a redirect endpoint that accepts arbitrary destinations does not provide the same protection. The application should reject responses whose code, state, nonce, redirect URI, or PKCE verifier does not match the transaction it started.

What does logging out actually do?

A meaningful logout invalidates the server-side application session and then clears the browser’s corresponding state. Deleting a visible page, hiding a menu, or removing a client-side flag is not logout if the server still accepts the session identifier.

  1. Send a logout request. Use the site’s visible logoff control; a state-changing request should be protected against CSRF.
  2. Invalidate the server record. Mark the session revoked or delete it so subsequent requests with that identifier fail.
  3. Expire the cookie. Return a matching Set-Cookie instruction that removes the browser’s cookie, including the same host, path, and relevant attributes used when it was created.
  4. Clear local application state. Remove cached account data, service-worker state, and other UI data that could make a signed-out browser appear authenticated.
  5. Handle other credentials separately. Revoke or rotate refresh tokens and end an identity-provider session only when the configured protocol and policy call for it.

NIST SP 800-63B-4 states: “Sessions SHOULD provide a readily accessible mechanism for subscribers to terminate (i.e., log off) their session when their interaction is complete.”

Does logging out sign you out everywhere?

Usually, no. A logout button is normally scoped to one application session unless the service explicitly coordinates broader sign-out.

State Who controls it What a local logout normally does
Application browser session The website Invalidates the server record and clears its cookie
Identity-provider browser session The provider May remain active, enabling a quick sign-in again
Other relying-party sessions Each separate application Usually remain valid unless single logout is implemented
OAuth access token The resource server and authorization server May remain usable until expiry or revocation
OAuth refresh token The authorization server Can continue minting access tokens until revoked or invalidated

NIST cautions that access and refresh tokens can remain valid after an authentication session ends and the user leaves an application. RFC 9700 notes that an authorization server may revoke refresh tokens after security events such as a password change or logout at the authorization server. The correct behavior depends on the provider’s documented single-logout, token-revocation, and session-management configuration; do not promise a universal “log out everywhere.”

Why does a website keep me logged in?

A site can keep showing an authenticated state because several independent mechanisms may still be valid.

  • Persistent cookie: the cookie has an expiry in the future instead of lasting only until the browser session ends.
  • Remember-me credential: a long-lived, revocable token can be exchanged for a new short-lived application session.
  • Refresh token: an application or native client can obtain new access tokens without asking for credentials again.
  • Single sign-on: an active identity-provider session silently authenticates a new application session.
  • Multiple browser contexts: another tab, profile, or device can still hold an independent session.

Clearing a cookie in one browser profile does not revoke a server-side session on another device. For a security-sensitive account, use the service’s account-security page to review and revoke active sessions and tokens, if that control is provided.

Why did my session expire?

Session expiry is normally enforced by the server through one or more clocks. The browser may still display an old cookie, but a request fails once the server considers the session invalid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Timeout Trigger Typical purpose
Idle timeout No qualifying request for a defined period Limits exposure when a user leaves a device unattended
Absolute timeout A maximum age is reached regardless of activity Caps the total lifetime of one authentication event
Renewal timeout A scheduled identifier rotation Reduces the value of a stolen identifier without forcing immediate reauthentication

A longer lifetime is more convenient; a shorter one limits the window in which a stolen identifier can be used. The appropriate values depend on data sensitivity, device sharing, and how often the service is used. The server must enforce all three policies where applicable, and the client should clear its authenticated UI when the server returns an expired-session response.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Why a page can look logged in after expiry

Single-page applications often retain account data in memory or browser storage. That display is only cached interface state. The next API request should receive an authentication failure, after which the application must discard the cache and send the user through its login flow again.

How should websites protect session cookies?

Cookie handling reduces, but does not remove, session hijacking and cross-site request-forgery risks.

  • Use HTTPS everywhere. The Secure attribute prevents ordinary HTTP transmission, but transport encryption does not stop fixation, prediction, client-side tampering, or every form of theft.
  • Keep identifiers out of URLs. OWASP warns that URL session IDs can leak through links, server logs, browser history, referrer headers, and search engines, and can be manipulated or fixed by an attacker.
  • Set narrow scope. Limit the cookie to the smallest practical host and path. Avoid sharing a session cookie across unrelated subdomains.
  • Use HttpOnly where JavaScript does not need the value. This blocks direct script access, although an XSS flaw may still perform authenticated actions through the browser.
  • Choose SameSite deliberately. Lax or Strict settings reduce ambient cross-site transmission, but sensitive state-changing requests still need CSRF defenses.
  • Regenerate on privilege changes. Rotate identifiers after login, multifactor completion, password changes, and elevation to a more privileged role.

Because browsers attach cookies automatically, an attacker can try to induce a victim’s browser to send a request from another site. SameSite is useful defense-in-depth, not a substitute for request-specific CSRF tokens or the protections required by an OAuth redirect flow.

What is the difference between an application session, an identity session, and an API token?

They differ in owner, location, purpose, and revocation rules. Treating them as one credential is a common source of logout and security mistakes.

Credential or state Stored or tracked where Grants Typical invalidation control
Application session Opaque browser cookie plus server record Access to one website’s pages and APIs Application logout, timeout, administrator revocation
Identity-provider session Provider-controlled browser state Authentication to that provider and participating applications Provider logout, password or account-security events
Access token Client and resource server Specific API scopes and audience Short expiry, resource-server rejection, or revocation where supported
Refresh token Client and authorization server Issuance of new access tokens Revocation, rotation failure, expiry, or security-event response

What should I check when logout or login behaves unexpectedly?

  1. Confirm the scope. Check whether the problem affects one site, the identity provider, an API client, or another browser profile.
  2. Use the service’s security page. Look for active sessions, remembered devices, refresh tokens, and a “sign out all sessions” control.
  3. Close other profiles and devices. A different profile may still hold a valid cookie even after the current tab is logged out.
  4. Clear site data only as a local fix. Removing cookies and storage can repair a stale interface, but it does not revoke a server-side session or token.
  5. Reauthenticate after a policy change. Password changes, role changes, and multifactor enrollment should trigger identifier rotation and may invalidate existing sessions.
  6. For developers, inspect server responses. Verify that logout revokes the session record, returns a correctly scoped expired cookie, and that every protected endpoint rejects revoked or timed-out identifiers.

Which standards explain these mechanics?

NIST SP 800-63B-4, published in July 2025, covers session maintenance, cookie protections, and accessible logoff. RFC 9700, published by the IETF in January 2025, describes current OAuth security best practices, including PKCE and transaction binding. The OWASP Session Management Cheat Sheet explains cookie-based session exchange, URL identifier risks, fixation, and related controls. MDN’s Session Management documentation provides implementation-oriented explanations of browser sessions. Policies and protocol details can evolve, so implementations should track current editions of these documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone use my cookie after I close the browser?

Yes, if the cookie is persistent or an attacker copied its value before the browser closed. Closing a window is not equivalent to server-side revocation; use logout and revoke active sessions when the account or device may be compromised.

Does changing my password invalidate every existing session?

Not necessarily. The service must deliberately revoke or rotate sessions and refresh tokens in response to a password change, and providers implement that policy differently. Check the account-security controls rather than assuming a password change logs out every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why am I asked to log in again even though my cookie is still present?

The server may have reached an idle, absolute, or renewal limit, revoked the session, or changed its signing and key policy. A browser can retain an expired value until the server sends a replacement or deletion instruction.

Is deleting browser cookies enough after using a public computer?

It removes local browser state but cannot revoke a session already copied or used elsewhere. Sign out through the service, revoke active sessions or tokens from its security page, and avoid saving credentials on the shared device.
