PS5 3D Audio is a console audio-processing feature, not a special format created inside the headset. Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech processes supported game sounds so they can appear to come from particular directions or locations. A compatible stereo headset then sends separate channels to your left and right ears, allowing you to perceive that positioning. The PULSE 3D wireless headset is tuned for this PS5 processing, but it is optional: Sony also supports compatible USB headsets and stereo headsets connected to the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack. The game must implement 3D Audio, and the result differs from one title to another.
What does PS5 3D Audio actually do?
PS5 3D Audio attempts to place game sounds within a three-dimensional sound field instead of presenting every effect as ordinary left-right stereo. In a supported game, an arrow can appear to pass beside your head, while footsteps may seem to come from another room or from a higher or lower position. The PS5 performs the spatial processing; the headset is the device that delivers the resulting signals to your ears.

The headset must simply be compatible with the selected PS5 output and able to reproduce the processed channels accurately.
Why the game matters
There is no single presentation shared by every PS5 game. Developers can use the console’s capabilities in different ways, and some games may use 3D positioning extensively while others use it only for selected effects. The PULSE 3D manual therefore states that 3D Audio works on PS5 if the game supports 3D Audio. A compatible headset cannot add spatial cues that the game never creates.

Does the PULSE 3D headset create Tempest 3D Audio?
No. Tempest 3D AudioTech runs on the PS5. Sony describes the PULSE 3D as “specifically tuned to deliver the 3D Audio made possible by the PlayStation 5 console,” which means it is an output device designed to reproduce the console’s processed signal rather than the source of the processing.
This distinction explains why replacing the PULSE 3D does not automatically remove 3D Audio. If another headset is compatible with the PS5 and delivers separate left and right channels, the console can still process supported game audio for it. The PULSE 3D’s advantages are its direct PS5 integration, included wireless adapter and controls, not exclusive access to Tempest.
How does 3D Audio travel through the PULSE 3D?
- The game generates sound events. The title determines which sounds exist and how they should be positioned.
- The PS5 applies Tempest processing. The console converts those events into left- and right-ear signals designed to create directional and positional cues.
- The connection carries the signal. With PULSE 3D, the included USB wireless adapter connects the headset to the console. A wired source can use the headset’s 3.5 mm jack.
- The earcups reproduce each channel. Your brain combines the timing and level differences between ears into the impression that a sound is in front, behind, above, below or to one side.
The effect is binaural playback through two ear cups, not a set of physically separate speakers surrounding you. Sony says stereo headphones offer the best 3D Audio experience because they can deliver audio to each ear separately.
Is the PULSE 3D required for PS5 3D Audio?
No. Sony identifies two broad alternatives: a PS5-compatible headset connected by USB, or a compatible stereo headset plugged into the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack. The PULSE 3D is the model Sony specifically tuned for PS5, but the console feature is not locked to it.
| Output option | How it connects | What to verify | 3D Audio condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| PULSE 3D wireless headset | Included USB wireless adapter | Adapter is connected and the headset is selected as the output | The game must support 3D Audio |
| Other compatible USB headset | USB connection to the PS5 | PS5 compatibility and available output controls | The game must support 3D Audio |
| Stereo headset through DualSense | 3.5 mm analog jack on the controller | Plug fit, headset compatibility and controller output selection | The game must support 3D Audio |
| PULSE Elite or PULSE Explore | Model-specific wireless connection and controls | Current device setup and supported PS5 settings | 3D Audio is available in supported games |
“Compatible” is important for third-party products. Connector shape alone does not guarantee that every microphone, control or wireless function will work. Check the headset manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information before buying or troubleshooting.

How do I turn on and select 3D Audio on PS5?
PS5 places output-device selection and the available audio controls in the Sound menu. The exact options shown can change with the connected device and the current configuration.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Connect the headset. For PULSE 3D wireless use, insert the included USB adapter into the PS5 and power on the headset. For a wired setup, plug the stereo headset into the DualSense 3.5 mm jack.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose the connected headset as the output device. If the PULSE 3D adapter is connected, select the corresponding wireless headset entry.
- Review the audio options that appear for that device. Sony notes that available settings vary according to the connected hardware and configuration.
- Launch a game that supports 3D Audio and test a scene with directional effects. Use the game’s own audio menu as well, because some titles expose separate spatial, headphone or mix controls.
You do not need a special PULSE-only application to activate Tempest 3D Audio. The console performs the processing once a compatible output is selected and the game supplies supported audio.
Adjusting EQ and headset controls
Sony provides EQ customization for PULSE headsets through the PS5 Sound controls, with the exact choices depending on the model. EQ changes the tonal balance—such as bass or treble emphasis—but they do not turn an unsupported game into a 3D Audio title. If a preset makes positional details harder to hear, return to a neutral profile before judging the spatial effect.
What are the PULSE 3D’s relevant specifications?
| Specification | Published information | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless connection on PS5 | Included USB wireless adapter | Use the adapter supplied with the headset for the PS5 wireless connection. |
| Wired connection | 3.5 mm headphone jack | Provides a wired option for compatible listed audio sources. |
| Wireless play time | Up to 12 hours | Manufacturer estimate; the manual says actual time varies with factors including charge and ambient temperature. |
| Weight | Approximately 292 g | Figure published in Sony’s instruction manual; comfort depends on head shape, fit and personal preference. |
The 12-hour figure is not an independent battery test. Treat it as a maximum manufacturer estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime for every volume level, microphone setting or battery condition.
How do PULSE 3D, PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore differ for 3D Audio?
All three belong to Sony’s current PULSE audio range, but they are different products. PULSE 3D is the older over-ear wireless headset designed around the PS5 launch generation. Sony positions PULSE Elite as an at-home wireless headset and PULSE Explore as wireless earbuds intended for portability. The choice changes fit, controls and connection hardware; it does not change the basic rule that the game must support 3D Audio.

| Model | Form and positioning | Published audio/connectivity details | What the specification does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| PULSE 3D | Over-ear wireless headset for PS5 | USB wireless adapter, 3.5 mm jack, up to 12 hours wireless play | It does not guarantee identical spatial results in every game. |
| PULSE Elite | Wireless headset for at-home play | Sony lists planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link technology | Those product descriptions are not independent evidence of superior positional accuracy. |
| PULSE Explore | Wireless earbuds for portable use | Sony lists planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link technology | Driver type alone does not establish better immersion or competitive performance. |
When comparing them, prioritize the connection you need, earcup or earbud fit, microphone behavior, game/chat controls, sidetone and EQ options. Comfort is personal, so published driver technology should not be treated as a substitute for fit.
What should I expect to hear in a supported game?
Expect clearer directional context, not a guaranteed advantage or a sound that is identical in every title. A well-implemented mix can make the direction of footsteps, projectiles, environmental movement or voices easier to infer. The strength and usefulness of those cues depend on the developer’s implementation, the game’s mix and your own hearing and fit.
3D Audio also does not mean every sound is independently rendered around you at all times. A title may spatialize some effects, use conventional stereo for others, or offer different audio modes. If a game’s documentation says it supports PS5 3D Audio, that establishes compatibility; it does not promise a particular level of immersion or competitive accuracy.
Why might PS5 3D Audio sound wrong or fail to appear?
- The game does not support the feature. The headset can still play ordinary game audio, but it cannot create the title’s missing spatial cues.
- The wrong output is selected. Return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and choose the connected headset.
- The wireless adapter is not connected. For PULSE 3D wireless use, make sure the included adapter is fully inserted and the headset is powered on.
- A wired plug is not fully seated. Reseat the 3.5 mm connector in the DualSense and check whether the controller recognizes the headset.
- The mix or EQ masks positional details. Disable heavy bass or other tonal presets temporarily, then test again in a scene with obvious directional sound.
- Expectations exceed the game’s implementation. Try another supported title before concluding that the headset or console is malfunctioning; developers use the feature differently.
If output options are missing, Sony’s support guidance indicates that the available settings depend on the connected device and configuration. That means a menu difference can be normal rather than evidence of a defective headset.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich headset connection should I choose?
Choose the PULSE 3D wireless adapter when
- You want a wireless setup designed specifically for PS5.
- You prefer an over-ear headset and want the headset’s built-in controls.
- You accept the manufacturer’s “up to 12 hours” estimate and the need to recharge.
Choose a USB headset when
- You already own a model documented as PS5-compatible.
- You want a direct console connection without using the controller’s analog jack.
- You have confirmed that its microphone and control features work on PS5.
Choose a DualSense 3.5 mm connection when
- You already have a suitable stereo headset.
- You want the simplest wired path and do not need wireless freedom.
- You are willing to keep the controller connected and account for its cable.
All three routes can carry the console’s processed signal when the game supports the feature. The practical differences are convenience, fit, controls and compatibility—not separate versions of Tempest Audio.

What is the most accurate way to judge PS5 3D Audio?
- Use a game that explicitly supports PS5 3D Audio.
- Start with a neutral EQ and a comfortable, consistent headset fit.
- Test a scene containing movement around the player, such as footsteps or a projectile passing nearby.
- Compare the same scene with the game’s supported audio modes, changing one setting at a time.
- Repeat with another supported title before generalizing about the technology.
This method separates the console feature from a particular game mix, EQ preset or poor fit. Sony has not published an independent accuracy, latency or competitive-performance statistic for PULSE 3D, so those outcomes should not be presented as measured guarantees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use PULSE 3D when a game has no 3D Audio support?
Yes. The headset can still reproduce the game’s normal audio through its wireless or wired connection. What is absent is the title-specific spatial processing, not basic sound output.
Does a heavier bass EQ make PS5 3D Audio better?
Not necessarily. Bass-heavy presets can obscure quiet positional details, so a neutral profile is a useful baseline when evaluating direction cues; the best setting remains a matter of hearing and preference.

Sony’s manual lists the headset at approximately 292 g, but that number cannot predict comfort for every person. Head shape, clamping pressure, glasses and ear-pad fit have a larger practical effect than weight alone.
Why do two supported games produce different spatial effects?
The PS5 supplies the same Tempest processing capability, but developers decide how each game uses it. One title may spatialize footsteps and projectiles extensively, while another may apply 3D positioning to fewer sound categories.
