AI can help physicists calculate, prepare data, tune experiments and search old datasets, but Sarah Demers argues that it cannot take responsibility for what makes scientific work meaningful: choosing good questions, understanding evidence, checking results and giving credit. In a Quanta Magazine Q&A published September 3, 2026, the Yale particle physicist describes a field whose tools and training are changing, while its need for human judgment endures.

What does a physicist think will endure in the age of AI?

For Sarah Demers, physics is more than producing answers efficiently. It is the human practice of deciding what is worth asking, designing ways to investigate it, judging what the evidence supports and explaining the result responsibly. Those activities, rather than any particular calculation or software tool, are what she sees as durable.

Demers chairs Yale University’s physics department and works in particle physics, including on the Mu2e experiment and ATLAS. Her point is not that physics will remain unchanged. AI is affecting how researchers do calculations and how students acquire skills. Rather, a faster way to do part of the work does not remove the need to understand why the work matters or whether its result is sound. As she puts it: “Confronting that — what is physics, really? What is enduring about the practice of physics itself? — that does not change with AI.”

This distinction matters because scientific progress is not simply a contest to generate more output. A calculation, dataset or draft becomes useful only when someone can connect it to a meaningful question and assess what it does—and does not—show. Automation can change the route to an answer without establishing that the answer is scientifically important.

Which parts of physics can AI help with?

Demers describes AI as useful when it supports a bounded task whose output a researcher can check. Its role may be to speed up a step or make an existing source of evidence easier to use, rather than to decide what a finding means.

Task How AI may help What remains for the researcher
Experimental tuning Help adjust or control settings in an experiment. Choose the scientific objective, set appropriate constraints and judge whether the resulting measurements are meaningful.
Calculation Accelerate calculations, including work in theoretical physics. Understand the method and assumptions, then check that the output answers the intended problem.
Data preparation Help prepare data for analysis. Know what the data represents and whether its preparation preserves the evidence needed for the question.
Coding Draft code frameworks or help with coding work. Inspect, understand and validate code before relying on its outputs.
Historical data Make older experimental datasets easier to interrogate. Interpret what the records can establish and relate them carefully to the current question.

The boundary is not “AI tasks are automatic, human tasks are manual.” A physicist may use software to perform a technical operation, but still needs to understand the operation well enough to evaluate the result. A tool can assist with a step without taking on the researcher’s responsibility for the conclusion.

What does the Genesis Mission show about AI in science?

It shows that public research institutions are investing in AI-enabled scientific work, not that AI has already replaced scientific judgment. Quanta reports that the U.S. Department of Energy selected 278 Genesis Mission projects in July 2026, each intended to incorporate AI into scientific work.

One cited project applies AI to help physicists search for the rare transformation of a muon into an electron by controlling settings in the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab. That example makes the potential concrete: an AI system can help with experimental control in a search for a difficult-to-observe process. It does not mean the system decides what would count as evidence for the transformation, or that project selection itself proves a scientific result.

The number is a count of selected projects, not a measure of completed discoveries or deployed systems. The example illustrates an intended use of AI in research; it should not be read as evidence that every project has the same task, level of automation or outcome.

How should researchers verify AI-generated scientific work?

They should verify it as work they are prepared to own, not treat a plausible output as self-validating. Demers’s standard is direct: “A physicist is responsible for what is in their publication if they’re going to sign their name.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical review process follows from that responsibility. It is an editorial implication of her position, not a checklist she presents in the interview:

  1. Define the task. State what the tool is being asked to do—such as draft code, prepare data or assist with a calculation—and what the result will be used to establish.
  2. Inspect the method and inputs. Check what information the system used, what assumptions the calculation or code makes, and whether the task was framed correctly.
  3. Reproduce or independently check the result. Use an appropriate independent calculation, test or review where possible. A fluent explanation is not a substitute for checking the underlying work.
  4. Trace claims and credit. Verify factual claims against their sources and identify contributions that need attribution. Do not assume a model will reliably name the people whose work informed its output.
  5. Take responsibility before publication. If the researcher cannot explain and defend the result, it is not ready to be presented as a scientific finding under their name.

These checks become especially important when a model’s output is hard to verify. A researcher who understands a field may recognize a bad answer or an inappropriate assumption; a less experienced user may not know what to challenge. Demers allows that established researchers may use a model as a “thought partner,” but warns that junior researchers face particular risk if they cannot tell when it has gone off track. Expertise does not make a model correct; it improves a person’s ability to evaluate what it produces.

Why do attribution and intellectual property matter?

Scientific work depends on showing where ideas came from and giving proper credit. Demers is concerned that language models are trained on large bodies of other people’s writing and may produce answers without identifying the sources or contributions behind them. That creates an attribution problem even when a generated passage sounds original or useful.

She states the principle plainly: “It’s also part of the scientific process that we correctly give attribution to the ideas.” In practice, a researcher should not treat model output as a source citation. They need to locate and assess the relevant original work, cite it appropriately and distinguish their own contribution from ideas supplied by others. The Q&A raises these concerns but does not establish a universal legal rule about ownership of AI-generated scientific work; its emphasis is on researchers’ obligation to be careful and accountable.

Is AI changing what physics students need to learn?

Yes. Demers says AI is rapidly changing theoretical physics by speeding calculations and altering the skills needed to solve problems. The educational question is which skills remain central when some technical work becomes easier or faster to perform.

She compares this shift with older expectations such as reading physics papers in German. That comparison is not a claim that language learning and AI are identical. It points to a recurring curriculum decision: a skill that once seemed indispensable may become less central as tools and practices change, while the field must still decide what students need in order to reason well and contribute.

Demers sees a possible benefit for undergraduates: they may be able to work with meaningful data sooner. If students spend less time on some preparatory tasks, they could have more time to frame interesting questions and learn to think like physicists. That is a possibility, not a guarantee. Earlier access to data is useful only if students also learn how it was produced, what its limits are and how to interpret it.

The goal is not to preserve every historical task for its own sake, nor to assume that a new tool makes foundational understanding obsolete. Physics programs have to weigh the task against the judgment it develops: which knowledge helps students identify a problem, detect an error or make a defensible interpretation? The answer may change as tools change, but students still need enough expertise to recognize when a tool has produced something unreliable.

Why does Demers avoid using language models herself?

Demers says she has never typed anything into Claude or ChatGPT and does not use an LLM to write emails or plan vacations. That is her personal practice, not a claim that every physicist should follow the same rule.

Her reason for avoiding AI-written emails is that difficult communication can be difficult because the sender needs to work through a difficult situation. As she explains: “Why are some emails difficult to write? Because I’m navigating something that’s tricky, that I need to figure out.” Outsourcing the words may also sidestep the thinking the exchange requires.

She also worries that AI-generated answers drawing on her physics-and-dance book could displace direct conversations with readers—conversations from which authors learn. The example broadens the issue beyond productivity: a generated response may deliver information, but it cannot automatically replace the value of an exchange between people. The book’s exact title is not identified in the Q&A summary, so it should not be guessed.

What should readers take from her caution?

Demers is not arguing that physics should refuse AI. She is arguing against treating AI as an authority or confusing greater speed with scientific progress. Her caution applies especially when the task is difficult to check, the user lacks enough expertise to recognize mistakes, or the output could obscure where an idea came from.

Her warning is explicit: “We need to remember our skepticism and be careful about the hype that we’re hearing. Human physics is not over.” The useful question is not simply whether AI can perform a task. It is whether the task’s result can be checked, whether the researcher understands it, and whether using the tool supports or displaces the reasoning and communication that science needs. Without those safeguards, more output can become noise rather than progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the selection of 278 Genesis Mission projects mean they have already produced scientific discoveries?

No. The count refers to projects selected by the U.S. Department of Energy in July 2026 that were intended to incorporate AI; selection is not evidence that a project has finished or made a discovery. The Mu2e example describes an intended application, not a reported result.

Does Demers’s personal decision mean she opposes all AI use in physics?

No. Her account distinguishes her own choice not to use language models from the ways AI may assist bounded scientific tasks. The Q&A presents her as cautious about authority, verification and attribution, rather than as claiming that AI has no place in research.

Why does Demers compare AI-era training with reading German physics papers?

The comparison highlights that curricula have always had to reconsider which skills are necessary as scientific practice changes. It does not mean students can skip foundational knowledge; they still need expertise to frame questions and spot unreliable work.

What is the title of Demers’s physics-and-dance book?

The Quanta Q&A summary identifies the book as co-written by Sarah Demers and Emily Coates but does not give its title. Because the exact title is not established there, it should not be inferred from the description.
