For the main story, play Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 2 (their Raccoon City stories overlap), Code: Veronica, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil Village, then Resident Evil Requiem. The key wrinkle is that Resident Evil 3 starts before Resident Evil 2 but continues into the same outbreak period. This is story order, not release order; an original and its remake occupy the same place rather than counting as separate events.

Capcom’s official timeline provides the dated sequence through Village; the publisher’s 2025 announcement calls Requiem the ninth main installment, and its 2026 release confirmation establishes that it is available. The order above adds it after Village without assigning it an unsupported in-story date.
How should you handle the Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 2 overlap?
Resident Evil 3 begins first, but the two games are not cleanly separated chapters in which every scene of one comes before every scene of the other. Capcom’s official timeline describes Resident Evil 3 as starting one day before Resident Evil 2 and ending during Raccoon City’s final days.

For a straightforward playthrough, finish Resident Evil 3 and then play Resident Evil 2. That keeps the overall list easy to follow and respects the earlier starting point of Jill’s story. It does not mean all of Resident Evil 3 happens before Leon and Claire arrive; the stories share the city and outbreak period.
You could instead switch between the games to follow their timelines more closely, but the available official dates establish the broad overlap rather than a scene-by-scene sequence. There is no need to force every section into a precise cross-game order to understand the main narrative. If you prefer to stay with one cast and game at a time, play the complete titles in sequence and keep the overlap in mind.

Why include Resident Evil 0 and Code: Veronica?
Both belong in a useful story-order playthrough even though their titles do not fit a simple numbered list. Resident Evil 0 is the earliest dated main-story game in the chronology: its events take place on July 23, 1998, the day before the mansion incident in Resident Evil.

Code: Veronica is also a main-story link, not an unrelated side trip. It follows the Raccoon City period in December 1998 and continues Claire’s search, with Chris and Wesker involved. Leaving it out because it has no number would skip a dated part of the core sequence before Resident Evil 4.
That does not mean every player has to follow chronology on a first playthrough. The order here answers the question “what happened first in the story?” Someone who would rather experience the games in the order they reached players can use release order instead, but should not mistake that for the in-universe timeline.
Where do the Revelations games fit?
Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil Revelations 2 are optional additions to an expanded story route. They fit between Resident Evil 4 and 5, and between Resident Evil 5 and 6, respectively.

These placements add stories between the main entries; they do not change the central ordering of the numbered games and the two important unnumbered entries. Capcom’s wider franchise chronology also includes other games, such as Outbreak and rail shooters, as well as screen adaptations. Those are outside this main-game sequence, so this guide does not present the list as every event in the broader Resident Evil universe.
Do remakes get their own place in the story order?
No. Treat an original and its remake as alternative versions of the same story slot, not as back-to-back events. For example, the Resident Evil remake occupies the July 24, 1998 mansion-incident position; it does not happen after the original as a new chronological episode.
The same principle applies when choosing how to play the Raccoon City games: an original and a remake are versions of the same game’s place in the timeline. Pick the edition you want to experience, then move to the next story entry. The chronology establishes when the events occur; it does not require playing every version.

For a current platform-specific example, Capcom announced digital Nintendo Switch 2 releases of Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 for October 16, 2026, and physical releases for January 29, 2027. Those physical editions are announced for a future date as of November 2026; that announcement alone does not establish a live listing, price, preorder, or package contents.
Is Resident Evil Requiem part of the main timeline?
Yes. Capcom calls Resident Evil Requiem the ninth main installment, and the publisher confirmed its release on February 27, 2026. It belongs after Village in the current main-story order.
Keep the distinction between a release date and a story date clear: February 27, 2026 is when the game launched in the real world. The first-party material cited for this chronology does not establish a precise month for the present-day events in Requiem. Its return to Raccoon City and its Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy leads identify its place in the series, but are not grounds to assign a specific in-universe year.

What is the simplest play order to follow?
For a chronological run without optional games, use this list. The slash between 3 and 2 signals the overlap, not two adjacent, non-overlapping chapters.
- Resident Evil 0
- Resident Evil
- Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 2, in either whole-game order, remembering that their stories overlap
- Resident Evil Code: Veronica
- Resident Evil 4
- Resident Evil 5
- Resident Evil 6

For the expanded route, insert Revelations between 4 and 5, and Revelations 2 between 5 and 6. This gives you the dated core sequence plus the two specifically placed optional stories without treating unrelated spin-offs or adaptations as main installments.
