On-chain AI verification can prove that a specified computation was performed over specified committed inputs and produced a specified output under a stated verification relation. It cannot, by itself, prove that those inputs describe reality, that the model is accurate or safe, that the output is meaningful, or that the surrounding system is decentralized. That distinction is the key to evaluating proposals such as ERC-7992: cryptographic provenance is useful, but it is not a complete theory of trust for AI systems.
What does on-chain AI verification actually prove?
A verification contract checks whether a proof satisfies a mathematical relation. In the ERC-7992 design, that relation binds a model commitment, an input commitment, an output, a proof-system identifier and the relevant verifier. If the check passes, an independent party can conclude that the prover supplied a proof consistent with those declared objects.

That is a meaningful claim. It can replace an operator’s unverified statement—“our model processed this request”—with a statement that another verifier can recompute or check. It can also make the result composable: another smart contract can require a valid proof before releasing funds or accepting a state transition.
The boundary is just as important. The proof does not establish any of the following unless those properties are separately encoded and evidenced:

ERC-7992 is a draft proposal created on July 23, 2025, not proof of a deployed standard or broad production adoption. Its value is as a precise description of an interface and of the security questions an implementation must answer.
Why doesn’t a proof solve the oracle problem?
A proof starts with the input supplied to the computation. If that input came from outside the chain, the central question becomes whether the value was authentic, complete, available and interpreted correctly. Ethereum.org summarizes the dependency plainly: “Data from an oracle must be correct for a smart contract to execute correctly.”

Suppose a lending model evaluates a borrower using a proof. The proof may show that the committed model processed a particular income figure and produced a risk score. It does not show that an employer supplied the figure, that a document was not selectively omitted, or that the data was current. A malicious or merely mistaken source can therefore feed a perfectly valid proof.
Oracle designs can reduce parts of this exposure. A signed feed can identify a source and detect alteration after signing. Multiple independent operators can make one operator’s failure less decisive. A source can publish availability commitments so users can retrieve the data needed to verify a result. None of these choices eliminates assumptions: users still need a policy for which sources count, how disagreement is resolved and what happens when a feed disappears.
For each external input, document four separate properties:
- Authenticity: who produced it, and how is that identity bound to the value?
- Integrity: can anyone alter it between collection, transport and verification?
- Availability: can an independent party obtain the value and evidence later?
- Fitness: does the value measure the real-world condition the model’s statement refers to?
A computation proof addresses the execution step. The other properties require source governance, data handling and dispute procedures.

What exactly is “the model” in a commitment?
A model hash is not a complete description of model identity unless the system defines what is included. ERC-7992 ties core elements together: model weights, architecture, proving circuit or AIR, and verification key. A production deployment may also depend on a tokenizer, preprocessing code, quantization settings, random-number behavior, system prompts and runtime libraries.
Those details matter because changing any one can change outputs while leaving a casual user with the impression that “the model” is unchanged. A commitment registry can make the selected artifact explicit, but it does not decide which artifact a consumer should trust. That is a governance decision.
How should model updates be controlled?
Define who can register, activate, deprecate and revoke a commitment. Record an effective time and a reason for each change. Specify whether existing proofs remain acceptable after an upgrade, and whether a consumer must migrate immediately or can use an older commitment during a transition. ERC-7992 calls attention to commitment drift: a verifier and a consumer can end up referring to different artifacts if update rules are vague.
A sound registry therefore needs authorization rules, versioning and an emergency path. It should distinguish a bug fix from a new model, because those changes have different review and compatibility implications.
Can a valid proof still verify the wrong thing?
Yes. The proof system can be mathematically sound while the statement encoded in the circuit is not the statement users intended. This is a specification failure, not necessarily a break in the cryptography.
Statement and circuit translation
A model described in ordinary software must be represented in a circuit or algebraic intermediate representation. Translation choices can omit preprocessing, clip values, use a different numeric precision or implement a simplified operation. The verifier then proves the translated computation exactly—even if that computation differs from the published model.

Output semantics
ERC-7992 identifies output ambiguity as a security consideration. A contract may verify a byte string without knowing whether it is a probability, a class label, a score on a particular scale or an error code. Consumers should publish an output schema, units, allowed ranges, encoding and failure behavior. Semantic validation belongs in the application layer, not only in the proof checker.
Implementation hazards
Replay protection must bind a proof to the intended request, chain or nonce. Hashes need domain separation so a value committed in one context cannot be reused as if it belonged to another. Verifier code needs independent review, and model commitments must be checked at the point of use. These are concrete risks identified in the proposal; they are not evidence that every zero-knowledge machine-learning implementation is insecure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWho pays for proving and on-chain verification?
Most designs split the work. A prover runs the model and generates a proof off-chain; a blockchain verifier checks the proof and may store a result or attestation. The prover pays for computation, memory and specialized hardware. The chain pays for verification, calldata and persistent storage.
| Cost or constraint | Where it appears | Design question |
|---|---|---|
| Proof generation | Off-chain prover infrastructure | What model size, hardware and latency are required for the target workload? |
| Verification | Transaction gas or verifier service | Does verification dominate gas, and can batching or a succinct attestation reduce it? |
| Input and proof data | Calldata, blobs or external storage | Can an independent verifier retrieve all data needed later? |
| Persistence | On-chain state | Which commitments, outputs and revocations must remain available? |
| Operational reliability | Prover and oracle network | What happens when generation times out or an operator is offline? |
ERC-7992 notes that proof verification can dominate gas and suggests off-chain verification with succinct on-chain attestations or batching in some cases. A 2024 review likewise treats proving and verification costs as design constraints. Neither source establishes a universal latency, price or throughput figure: those values vary by model, chain, proof system and hardware.
Moving verification off-chain can lower transaction costs, but it changes the trust boundary. Users must know who runs the verifier, what evidence is posted on-chain and how a disputed result can be independently checked.
Does on-chain verification make an AI system decentralized?
No. It can decentralize one verification step while leaving other decisive steps under the control of a single party or small group.

Map the complete trust path:
- Who collects or selects each external input?
- Who runs the model and generates the proof?
- Who controls the model registry and upgrade keys?
- Who operates the verifier or submits the transaction?
- Who resolves conflicting oracle reports?
- Who can pause, revoke or replace a result?
An oracle committee may reduce dependence on one operator but introduces membership, quorum and collusion assumptions. A fallback administrator may improve recovery while weakening censorship resistance. A trusted execution environment (TEE) may protect code and data during execution while requiring trust in hardware vendors, firmware and attestation services. These arrangements can be reasonable; they should be named rather than hidden behind the phrase “on-chain AI.”
How do zero-knowledge proofs and TEE attestations differ?
They provide different kinds of computational provenance. A zero-knowledge machine-learning proof aims to let a verifier check a mathematical statement about a committed computation. A TEE attestation reports that designated code ran in a protected environment, subject to the security of that environment and its attestation chain.
| Question | ZKML proof | TEE attestation |
|---|---|---|
| Primary assurance | Mathematical consistency with the stated computation | Execution inside an attested hardware-backed environment |
| Main assumptions | Sound proof system, correct circuit, verifier and commitments | Hardware, firmware, vendor and attestation infrastructure |
| Model identity | Bound to declared model and proving artifacts | Bound to measured code and configuration reported by the enclave |
| Performance profile | Proof generation can be intensive; verification may be succinct | Often suited to production workloads, with hardware and service dependencies |
| Failure mode | A valid proof can certify an incorrectly specified statement | A valid attestation can be limited by platform compromise or stale status |
The SPICE inference-chain Internet-Draft presents these approaches as complementary. Its archived version expired on September 19, 2026, so it is an informational design document, not an approved standard or evidence of current deployment adoption.
What can an attestation establish about future behavior?
Only a present-tense property unless the protocol adds an enforceable mechanism for change. ERC-8126, published January 15, 2026, describes primarily off-chain checks and explicitly warns that a passed verification is a point-in-time result, not a guarantee of future behavior or intent.
This distinction matters for agents, wallets, endpoints and other mutable systems. An attestation may show that an endpoint ran approved software when checked. It does not promise that the operator will not update the software, leak a key, change a policy or behave differently tomorrow. Applications should attach an expiry, revocation source and refresh schedule to every such result.

- Write the exact claim. State whether the system proves execution, data origin, model identity, output range or something else. Avoid a broad word such as “trustworthy.”
- List every committed artifact. Include weights, architecture, circuit or AIR, verification key, tokenizer, preprocessing and runtime behavior that can affect the result.
- Trace each input to its source. Record authenticity, integrity, availability, update frequency and the process for correcting a bad value.
- Inspect the output schema. Define encoding, units, ranges, confidence meaning, null values and semantic checks.
- Review proof and verifier assumptions. Check replay protection, hash domain separation, key management, circuit correctness and independent implementation review.
- Price the whole path. Estimate proving hardware, generation time, verification gas, storage, data retrieval and failure recovery for the actual model and chain.
- Draw the trust map. Name prover operators, oracle members, registry administrators, dispute bodies, TEE vendors and anyone able to censor or replace results.
- Define lifecycle controls. Set expiry, revocation, upgrade authorization, migration rules and treatment of proofs made under deprecated commitments.
- Test disagreement and outage cases. Specify what happens when sources conflict, data is unavailable, proofs time out or an attestation becomes stale.
- Publish what users can independently check. Make the model commitment, input evidence, proof-system identifier and verification procedure available in a durable format.
When is on-chain AI verification still useful?
It is useful when the application needs an independently checkable execution claim and can state that claim narrowly. Examples include enforcing that a specific policy model was run on a committed data snapshot, allowing another contract to accept a result without trusting the prover’s private database, or making model and verifier versions auditable across organizations.
The strongest case is composability: a proof can become a machine-checkable prerequisite for settlement, access or accounting. Model commitments also prevent a prover from silently substituting a different artifact, while standardized interfaces can reduce integration work between registries, verifiers and applications.
Those benefits do not require pretending that computation proofs answer questions they were never designed to answer. Pair them with authenticated data pipelines, explicit semantic schemas, governance for model updates, availability guarantees and a clear dispute process. The result is a layered assurance system rather than a single cryptographic badge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a smart contract verify whether an AI answer is true?
It can verify a proof about a specified computation, but “true” usually refers to facts outside that computation. Establishing truth requires reliable source data, a suitable model, a defined interpretation of the output and a policy for uncertainty or disagreement.
What happens if the committed model is upgraded after a proof is issued?
The proof remains tied to the old commitment unless the application accepts it under an explicit migration rule. A registry should record effective times, deprecation status and whether historical results remain valid for settlement or auditing.
Are zero-knowledge AI proofs private by default?
They can hide some inputs or intermediate values, but privacy depends on what the protocol publishes: commitments, outputs, metadata, calldata and availability records may still reveal information. The design must specify which data is hidden and what observers can infer.
Who is responsible when an oracle supplies bad data to a proven model?
Responsibility follows the system’s governance and dispute rules, not the proof alone. The design should identify source operators, define correction and rollback procedures, and state whether users can challenge a value before an irreversible on-chain action.
