Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s paid membership for Switch and Switch 2. The standard tier covers online multiplayer in compatible games, Save Data Cloud backup for supported titles, NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries, the Nintendo Music smart-device app, selected offers and related online services. Expansion Pack adds more classic systems, selected downloadable content and, on Switch 2, GameCube Classics and certain Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs.

The important qualifications are game- and region-specific: not every title supports online play or cloud backup, classic games are subscription access rather than purchases, and included DLC stops working when the membership ends. U.S. prices and catalog details below are those listed by Nintendo for 2026.

What is Nintendo Switch Online, and when do you need it?

Nintendo Switch Online is an account-based subscription launched on September 18, 2018. It works with both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, so you do not need a separate membership for each console generation. The membership follows the Nintendo Account that bought it, while a Family membership can cover multiple accounts.

You generally need an active membership to use online multiplayer in compatible paid games. Compatibility is determined by each game: Nintendo’s support matrix notes that only a small number of titles offer online modes without a membership. A game can therefore require membership for its competitive or cooperative mode even though its single-player content remains available offline.

Free trials, catalogs, promotional benefits and prices can change by country and date. The figures in this article are for the U.S. market and Nintendo’s 2026 support information.

What does the standard Nintendo Switch Online membership include?

Online multiplayer for compatible games

The core benefit is online play with friends and other players in games that support Nintendo’s online service. Whether a specific mode needs membership is a game-level question, so check the title’s current product information or Nintendo’s support matrix before subscribing solely for one game.

Save Data Cloud for supported games

Save Data Cloud lets an eligible game back up save data online. Nintendo qualifies this feature by title, so it is not correct to assume that every Switch or Switch 2 game can be backed up. A game may omit cloud backup because of design, competitive or technical considerations; verify support for the exact title you care about.

Cloud backup is separate from owning the game. You still need the game and the Nintendo Account that uses its save data. If a title is unsupported, its local save remains on the console unless you use another transfer method provided for that game.

Nintendo Classics libraries

Standard membership provides curated libraries of Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES and Game Boy games. These are access rights while the subscription is active, not permanent purchases of every included game. Catalogs can differ by region and can change as Nintendo adds or removes titles.

Nintendo Music

Nintendo lists the Nintendo Music smart-device app as part of the standard membership at no additional charge. It is an included mobile service rather than a separate console game entitlement.

Special offers and member benefits

Members may receive promotions, selected in-game benefits or merchandise offers. Nintendo says availability depends on the country and the offer period, so an offer shown to one account or region may not appear for another and should not be treated as a guaranteed permanent benefit.

Nintendo Switch App functions

Compatible games can use the Nintendo Switch App for features such as invitations and voice chat. Nintendo states that voice chat through the app is restricted to members age 13 and older. The app’s availability and the functions exposed to it depend on the game.

Which games qualify for online play and cloud saves?

There is no single blanket rule for every title. Nintendo’s support information distinguishes compatible online play from supported Save Data Cloud backup, and the two lists are not necessarily identical.

  • For online play: check whether the specific game and mode list Nintendo Switch Online as required.
  • For cloud backup: confirm that the exact game supports Save Data Cloud; “most games” does not mean all games.
  • For app features: verify that the game supports Nintendo Switch App invitations or voice chat.
  • For regional benefits: check the storefront and account region, because offers and catalogs can vary.

This title-by-title approach matters for buyers who only want one service. A membership can be worthwhile for multiplayer while providing no cloud backup for a particular game, or it can provide a classic library even when the game you play has no online mode.

Nintendo Switch 2 System with Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Bundle
  • The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

Which classic systems are included?

The classic libraries are divided by membership tier. Standard gives access to three systems; Expansion Pack retains those libraries and adds four more on Switch, plus GameCube Classics when used with Switch 2.

Classic system Standard membership Expansion Pack Console qualification
NES Included Included Switch and Switch 2
Super NES Included Included Switch and Switch 2
Game Boy Included Included Switch and Switch 2
Game Boy Advance Not included Included Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo 64 Not included Included Switch and Switch 2
Virtual Boy Not included Included Switch and Switch 2
SEGA Genesis Not included Included Switch and Switch 2
GameCube Not included Included Switch 2 only

Nintendo describes these as libraries of classic games, not a purchase license for each title. Access is tied to an active membership and to the catalog Nintendo makes available in your region. If a subscription expires, the entitlement to launch those subscription games ends even if the software was previously downloaded.

What is the difference between Nintendo Switch Online and Expansion Pack?

Expansion Pack includes every standard benefit, then adds the larger classic-game selection, selected downloadable content and Switch 2-specific benefits. The following comparison uses Nintendo’s U.S. 2026 plan descriptions.

Benefit Standard Expansion Pack
Online multiplayer in compatible games Included Included
Save Data Cloud for supported games Included Included
NES, Super NES and Game Boy Included Included
Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and SEGA Genesis Not included Included
GameCube Classics Not included Included with Switch 2
Selected DLC Not included Included while membership and base game are active
Selected Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs Not included Included with Switch 2
Nintendo Music, offers and Switch App services Included where supported Included where supported

Which DLC is included?

Nintendo lists selected add-ons at no additional charge, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe—Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons—Happy Home Paradise. You must own the corresponding base game. The DLC entitlement pauses when Expansion Pack lapses; renewing restores access, but the membership does not replace the base game.

What does Expansion Pack add for Switch 2?

On Switch 2, Expansion Pack includes select Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs. Nintendo specifically lists upgrades for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom among the benefits. These upgrades require a Switch 2; owning Expansion Pack on an original Switch does not unlock the Switch 2-only items there.

Does Nintendo Switch Online work on Switch 2?

Yes. The same Nintendo Account membership works across Switch and Switch 2. Standard online multiplayer, supported cloud saves, the standard classic libraries, Nintendo Music and eligible offers are not split into separate console-generation subscriptions.

Switch 2 adds features that have their own requirements. GameChat is a Switch 2 feature available with any Nintendo Switch Online membership. GameCube Classics and the listed Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs require both a Switch 2 and Expansion Pack. An Expansion Pack bought for an account therefore delivers more value to a Switch 2 owner than to someone using only the original console.

How much does Nintendo Switch Online cost in the U.S.?

Nintendo Support lists the following prices for 2026. Individual plans cover one Nintendo Account; Family plans cover up to eight Nintendo Accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan Term U.S. price Accounts covered
Standard Individual 1 month $3.99 One Nintendo Account
Standard Individual 3 months $7.99 One Nintendo Account
Standard Individual 12 months $19.99 One Nintendo Account
Standard Family 12 months $34.99 Up to eight Nintendo Accounts
Expansion Pack Individual 12 months $49.99 One Nintendo Account
Expansion Pack Family 12 months $79.99 Up to eight Nintendo Accounts

The Family option is designed for a Nintendo family group rather than for sharing one login. Each covered person uses their own Nintendo Account, while the purchaser manages the membership for the group. Nintendo’s listed prices are time- and region-sensitive, so check the current U.S. eShop or support page before paying.

How does the seven-day free trial work?

Nintendo advertises a seven-day free trial for standard Individual membership. The trial does not include Expansion Pack content and, under Nintendo’s terms, converts to a one-month auto-renewing membership unless you cancel it.

Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle with Bonus HDMI Cable & Screen Cleaning Cloth
  • 【Ultimate Nintendo Switch 2 Bundle – Ready to Play】Includes the complete Nintendo Switch 2 console and a full-game download of Mario Kart World, so you can start racing right out of the box. Perfect for gamers of all ages and playstyles.
  • 【Next-Gen Hybrid Gaming with Stunning Visuals】Experience a vivid 7.9‑inch 1080p LCD touchscreen with HDR support, and enjoy 4K TV output at up to 60 fps when docked — for immersive gameplay at home or on the go.
  • 【Versatile 3 Play Modes】Seamlessly switch between Handheld, Tabletop, and TV modes — all featuring intuitive controls and smooth performance, wherever you choose to play.
  • 【Enhanced Social Gaming with GameChat & Multiplayer】Connect with friends locally, enjoy online multiplayer with up to 24 players, and use voice chat via GameChat (internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online membership required after trial period).
  • 【Powerful Storage & Joy‑Con 2 Controllers】Includes 256 GB internal storage (expandable with microSD), magnetic Joy‑Con 2 controllers, docking station, HDMI cable, AC adapter, grip, and straps — everything you need for the ultimate gaming setup.

That makes the trial useful for testing standard online play, cloud-save eligibility and the basic classic libraries, but not for evaluating Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, Genesis, GameCube or the included DLC. Review the renewal setting before the seven days end if you do not want the paid month to begin.

Which membership should you choose?

Choose standard Individual when one person needs the basics

This is the straightforward option for one Nintendo Account that needs online multiplayer, supported cloud backup and the NES, Super NES and Game Boy catalogs. It also includes Nintendo Music, eligible offers and supported Nintendo Switch App functions without paying for the larger classic-game tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose standard Family when several accounts need those same benefits

A 12-month Family membership can cover up to eight Nintendo Accounts. It is the practical fit when multiple people in the same Nintendo family group need standard online services but no one needs the Expansion Pack libraries or DLC.

Choose Expansion Pack Individual for the extra catalogs or DLC

The Individual Expansion Pack costs more because it adds four classic systems, selected DLC and, for Switch 2 owners, GameCube Classics and listed upgrade packs. It makes sense when you would otherwise buy the included add-ons separately or expect to use the expanded libraries regularly.

Choose Expansion Pack Family when multiple accounts will use the extras

The Family Expansion Pack extends those additional benefits to up to eight Nintendo Accounts. Compare the higher annual fee with the number of people who will actually use the expanded libraries or DLC; paying for unused slots does not create extra value by itself.

What are the main limitations to check before subscribing?

  • Game compatibility: online multiplayer and cloud backup are not universal. Confirm both separately for the game you care about.
  • Active membership: classic-game access and included DLC are subscription benefits, not permanent ownership. DLC also requires the base game.
  • Console requirements: GameCube Classics and the named Switch 2 upgrade packs need Switch 2 as well as Expansion Pack.
  • Regional variation: prices, classic catalogs and special offers can differ by country and can change over time.
  • Trial renewal: the seven-day standard trial is not an Expansion Pack trial and converts to a paid month unless canceled.
  • Voice-chat age rule: Nintendo states that Nintendo Switch App voice chat is restricted to members age 13 and older.

How should you verify a feature for one specific game?

  1. Identify the exact game edition and console version you use; a Switch release and a Switch 2 Edition can have different entitlements.
  2. Check Nintendo’s current support matrix or the game’s listing for online-multiplayer requirements.
  3. Check the same sources for Save Data Cloud support rather than assuming that online play implies cloud backup.
  4. If you are considering Expansion Pack, confirm that the DLC or upgrade pack is explicitly listed and that you own the required base game.
  5. For a Family plan, make sure every intended player uses a Nintendo Account included in the family group.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep access to classic games after my membership expires?

No. The classic libraries are subscription entitlements, so their launch access ends when the membership is inactive. Renewing the same tier restores access to whatever catalog Nintendo currently offers in your region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Family membership merge everyone’s save data?

No. Family coverage gives separate Nintendo Accounts access to the service; it does not combine profiles or make one person’s saves appear in another account. Cloud eligibility still depends on the individual game.

Can I use the standard trial to test Expansion Pack games?

No. Nintendo’s trial terms exclude Expansion Pack content. Testing the extra classic systems or included DLC requires an Expansion Pack membership rather than the seven-day standard trial.

What happens if I own an included DLC pack but cancel Expansion Pack?

For DLC supplied through Expansion Pack, access pauses when the membership lapses, and the base game remains required. The add-on becomes usable again if you renew an eligible Expansion Pack membership.
