A video game is inclusive for women when women can play capable, varied characters; influence the story with comparable dialogue, named roles and playable time; and participate in communities where harassment reports produce visible consequences. It is not enough to put one woman on the cover or add a female avatar option while leaving costumes sexualized, women passive, or voice chat unsafe.

Women make up 46% of U.S. players, according to the Entertainment Software Association’s 2026 Essential Facts, and Bryter’s 2025 briefing puts women’s share at 48% of gamers worldwide. Yet the Geena Davis Institute (GDI) says girls and women account for about 20% of characters. Inclusion therefore requires changes to characters, narrative structure, production teams and community systems together.

What does an inclusive video game for women actually include?

Inclusive design has three connected tests: who appears, who has agency, and whether people can safely take part. A game can pass one test and fail the others. A well-written heroine does not compensate for a reporting system that ignores sexual threats, and a broad character creator does not fix a story in which every woman is a side character.

  • Presence: Women and girls appear in numbers that reflect the audience, including women of different ages, races, body types, sexual orientations and disabilities.
  • Agency: Women lead missions, make consequential choices, speak at comparable length, succeed and fail for their own reasons, and can be villains, parents, rivals or comic characters rather than one designated “strong female character.”
  • Participation: Voice, text and social systems prevent harassment, make reporting credible and apply sanctions consistently.

Susanna Pollack, president of Games for Change, describes the distinction precisely: “Representation in games isn’t just about visibility—it’s about agency.”

Are there enough female characters in games?

No. Player demographics and on-screen representation remain far apart, although the exact percentages depend on the country and measurement.

Measure Finding Scope and source
Share of players who are women 46% United States, ESA Essential Facts 2026
Share of gamers who are women 48% Worldwide estimate in Bryter Women Gamers Study 2025
Characters who are girls or women About 20% GDI Playbook spotlight statistic
Female protagonists among 120 highest-rated 2025 games 15% VGTimes analysis of Metacritic list
Games tagged “Female Protagonist” on Steam More than 2,260 titles, about 10% of 2025 releases VGTimes analysis of SteamDB

Another Spanish content analysis of 313 mainstream characters found women on only 17.78% of covers and in 35.29% of in-game audiovisual content. On those covers, 85.29% of dominant characters were male, and women never appeared in the mature (50+) age range. These figures describe Spain’s mainstream catalogue, not every game sold globally.

There are signs of movement. The Civilization series grew from four women among 34 faction leaders in Civilization 4 to 17 among 56 in Civilization 6. Recent female-led or female-centered releases cited by VGTimes include Horizon and A Plague Tale, as well as Hades 2, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Silent Hill f and Ghost of Yotei. Those examples broaden the field, but they do not establish parity across the market.

How should female characters be designed?

Start with agency and variety, then check visual treatment. Inclusive characters are not defined by a single personality, body or occupation.

Give women goals that are not accessories to a man’s plot

A woman should be able to initiate a conflict, pursue a profession, protect someone else, make a strategic mistake or reject the expected heroic path. The authors of a 2024/2025 Sexuality & Culture study put it this way: “Although there are some advances in terms of the inclusion of women as protagonists in video games, we must highlight that being a woman should not be an alternative to the default gender. We need non-stereotypical female characters, who tell their own story and present different ways of interacting with their environment, motivations and interests.”

Aloy in Horizon Forbidden West and Ellie in The Last of Us Part II occupy exclusive female-protagonist positions in that study’s cover sample. Their significance is not that every game needs the same type of heroine, but that a woman can occupy the narrative center without being treated as a novelty.

Make competence, clothing and age functional rather than performative

Frontiers’ 2026 systematic review of 100 articles over 13 years finds recurring exaggeration of breasts and hips, revealing cosmetics and suggestive poses that reduce women to “mere objects of desire.” In GDI’s October 2020 Twitch analysis, female characters were shown in revealing clothing in 25% of sampled segments, compared with 2% for male characters. Bryter reported in 2023 that 68% of women felt female characters were often oversexualized.

Sexuality is not itself exclusionary; compulsory sexual display is. A character in armor should have equipment that works for the task, and a beach or nightlife scene can still allow different body types and ages. Springer’s Spanish cover analysis found little revealing clothing on those particular covers, illustrating why studios must audit in-game models, animation and camera framing rather than relying on box art.

Support identification without forcing it

Three in four women in Bryter’s 2025 sample wanted games to reflect who they are through customization, playstyle or meaningful choices. Character creators should therefore offer varied hair, skin, body and voice options, but inclusion should not depend on every player selecting a female avatar. A fixed protagonist can be inclusive when she has depth, authority and room for different interpretations.

Design intersectionally

Gender is only one axis. GDI’s Playbook spotlight reports that nearly nine in 10 leading characters are white, 0.03% of characters are identified as LGBTQIA+, and 0.1% are shown with a physical disability, while 31% of players have a disability. The ESA says 11% of U.S. adult players identify as LGBT+. Dr Marie-Claire Isaaman of Women in Games warns that women of colour, LGBTQ+ women and women from different socio-economic backgrounds face compounded barriers. A gender checklist that ignores race, sexuality, age or disability can leave the most marginalised players invisible.

Why are female characters oversexualized?

Oversexualization persists when a studio’s visual shorthand assumes a heterosexual male audience, when women are assigned decorative or passive roles, and when a homogeneous team lacks people able to challenge those defaults. Guergana Guintcheva, an EDHEC professor and co-author on gender and games, says: “For example, female characters are fewer in number, more sexualised and more often confined to roles deemed ‘non-essential’ or ‘passive’.”

The commercial argument for changing that design is substantial. GDI and Nielsen found that 63% of U.S. and U.K. respondents were more likely to play a game that included women as playable characters (68% of women and 60% of men). Forty-seven percent said they were less likely to play a game using gender stereotypes. Sixty-four percent were more likely to play a game with characters more diverse than those they usually see.

These are purchase-intent measures, not proof that a particular representation will sell. They do show that stereotype-breaking is compatible with a broad audience. As Madeline Di Nonno of GDI puts it, “Everyone wins when we close the gap between who the players are and what they see on screen.”

How can a game’s story give women equal weight?

Count narrative participation instead of judging a poster. EDHEC’s Diversity & Inclusion Chair created a four-part parity test inspired by the Bechdel approach:

Question What it checks
Are female and male characters equal in number? Overall cast balance
Are named female and male characters equal in number? Whether women receive identities rather than anonymous roles
Do female and male characters speak an equal number of words? Dialogue and narrative authority
Are playable female and male characters equal in number? Who gets to act, not merely appear

Fewer than 2% of 160 commercially important titles released from 1988 through 2025 passed all four tests. The corpus represented 1.4 billion copies sold, about 14,700 characters and more than 6.5 million spoken words. Blockbusters such as Grand Theft Auto V (230 million copies) met none of the tests, with female representation ranging from 0% to 28%; Red Dead Redemption II (87 million) ranged from 0% to 16%. Skyrim met one test, with female representation ranging from 28% to 50%.

Those results are not a claim that every game must contain a 50/50 cast. A historical strategy game, a tightly authored family drama and a multiplayer sandbox have different fictional needs. The tests reveal whether a studio has considered named women, speech and playability rather than treating a single heroine as sufficient.

Florine Gallois, a statistics and sociology researcher at EDHEC, says “these stark gender-based disparities are not a matter of narrative chance: they reflect systemic biases, fuelled by a narrative culture that is more inclined to associate male characters with action and power.” Guintcheva similarly argues that popular storytelling can reproduce and legitimise a hierarchy between genders.

Let women talk to women about more than men

Dialogue balance is not only a word count. Women should discuss strategy, work, friendship, family, belief and conflict with one another. Motherhood, growing up and family disputes can be mainstream dramatic material rather than a separate “women’s story.” Alexandra Golubeva, quoted by VGTimes, notes that such subjects should not be quarantined in a special category.

Build an inclusive writing process

EDHEC researchers cite a commonly used group-dynamics finding: below roughly 30% representation, a minority viewpoint is statistically harder to voice in a team. Women in Games France puts women at 20% of French studio workforces, down four percentage points in three years. GDC’s 2025 survey reported 25% women among developers; AWIS reported 32% when women and nonbinary developers were combined. Those figures use different groupings and should not be merged.

Hiring women is not a guarantee of good representation, but it increases the chance that assumptions are challenged early. Guintcheva says “the under-representation of women and minorities in games largely mirrors their under-representation behind the scenes.”

How do you make gaming communities safer for women?

Safety requires enforceable systems, not advice to “just block and move on.” Women use voice chat, text channels, Discord, Twitch and guilds as social infrastructure, and abuse in any of those spaces can drive them out of a game.

2024 59% experienced toxicity Bryter 2024
2025 58% experienced toxicity from men; one in three experienced it regularly Bryter 2025 key statistics

Isaaman, citing Bryter, reports that 59% of girls and women in online play spaces deal with verbal abuse, harassment, exclusion or worse; 26% have been sexually harassed and 12% have received rape threats. Only about one-third feel current reporting and moderation processes are effective. A separate survey cited by Frontiers found about 56% of women gamers reporting sexual harassment, while an older World of Warcraft study found 63.6% of women reporting sexism and 72.5% of male participants failing to recognise sexism as a serious concern.

Design reporting people will trust

  • Explain what happens after a report and show that sanctions occur, without exposing victims’ private information.
  • Make repeat-account harassment and doxxing part of the threat model; blocking one account is not enough when an offender can return.
  • Provide moderation coverage for guilds, clans, Discord-linked spaces and broadcasts, not only the match client.
  • Use clear community standards and make enforcement visible so players understand that confronting abuse is normal.
  • Offer ways to participate without making open voice chat the default skill channel.

More than half of women in Bryter’s 2025 briefing reported incidents, but one in four still ignored abuse because they did not believe reports would be taken seriously. A report button without credible consequences simply records harm.

Does an inclusive game need an inclusive workforce?

Workforce composition is part of product quality because design decisions are made by people with particular experiences. Leadership, engineering and writing remain especially thin for women, while retention is affected by maternity, fertility, menopause, childcare and a “creative genius” archetype that Alison Lacy of Radical Forge describes as “still solidly male.”

Studios can use structured character reviews, sensitivity consultation, pay and promotion audits, parental support and clear anti-harassment escalation. The GDI Playbook is a free digital tool at GDIPlaybook.org with bias-reflection exercises, case histories and interactive guidance covering gender, race and ethnicity, LGBTQIA+ identities, age, body type and disability. Adrian Ledda, Activision’s director of inclusive game design, says the Playbook recognises that teams “start off at different points in that journey.”

How can players judge whether a game is inclusive?

Use evidence from the game itself rather than a marketing label. Before buying or joining, check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Whether women are playable throughout the campaign or limited to a single choice, companion slot or promotional image.
  2. Whether named women speak to one another about goals, work, conflict or discovery, not only about male characters.
  3. Whether clothing, camera angles and animations are consistent with the character’s task and personality.
  4. Whether the character creator includes meaningful options for body, voice, skin, age, disability and relationships.
  5. Whether the developer publishes a conduct code, reporting route and explanation of enforcement.
  6. Whether community moderators address harassment in voice, text, guild and broadcast spaces.

Keep geography and genre in mind. Bryter found that women in China were more likely to play multiplayer and massively multiplayer games, while U.K. and U.S. patterns have historically included action-adventure and, on mobile, puzzles. The claim that women only want “cosy” games is contradicted by Bryter’s finding that women’s play of battle royale rose 22% since 2020, sports 12%, shooters 8% and fighting games 8%; 66% now seek immersive worlds and engaging stories.

What should studios change first?

The most effective plan treats inclusion as a production requirement rather than a late casting decision.

  1. Set measurable goals. Track female and male character counts, named roles, spoken words and playable roles using the four EDHEC questions.
  2. Audit stereotypes early. Review concept art, animation, camera framing, dialogue and age distribution before assets are locked.
  3. Write an ensemble. Give women distinct motivations, relationships and failures; avoid assigning all emotional or domestic material to one token character.
  4. Invite outside perspectives. Consult people with relevant cultural, disability and LGBTQIA+ experience, and compensate them for their expertise.
  5. Fund moderation. Staff reporting, publish response standards, investigate repeat offenders and protect moderators from retaliation.
  6. Measure retention and belonging. Ask players whether they can participate without hiding their gender, disabling social features or leaving matches.

Adel Ziane, a French Senate rapporteur, summarised the obligation this way: “Women have already earned their place amongst the players. It is now up to the entire ecosystem to ensure that its narratives, communities and competitions finally reflect this reality.”

Inclusive design is therefore not a cosmetic diversity pass. It is a measurable distribution of agency on screen, a writing culture that gives women comparable narrative weight, and a community architecture that makes social play safe enough to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do games need a female-only mode to be inclusive?

No. A female-only mode is optional; inclusion is better measured by whether women can play central roles, customise identity where appropriate and make consequential choices. A fixed female protagonist can be inclusive when the writing gives her independent goals and meaningful relationships.

How should parents judge a game’s treatment of women?

Look beyond the age rating and check gameplay footage for camera framing, costumes, dialogue balance and whether women are rescuers, leaders, rivals or background objects. Also read the game’s conduct and reporting policies, because a child can encounter exclusion through chat even when the story is respectful.

Can character creators solve representation problems by themselves?

No. Customisation helps players see themselves, but it cannot replace named female characters, dialogue or agency in the authored story. Creators should be paired with inclusive default options and narratives that do not assume a male player.

Why does voice chat matter so much for women players?

Voice can reveal gender and make harassment immediate, while many competitive games treat it as a strategic advantage. If players routinely mute chat, hide their identity or leave matches to avoid abuse, the social and tactical parts of the game are no longer equally available.
