Botfather is an open-source JavaScript framework for building cross-platform automation bots. Botfather also includes image-matching facilities and a Binary Generator Tool, called bingen, for producing cross-platform binaries. The Desktop API documentation specifically states that it can be used for Windows and Linux desktop automation. The same script architecture therefore spans a mobile device, a browser session, and a desktop workstation, but a script still needs target-appropriate API calls and image assets.
How does Botfather’s visual automation work?
Botfather’s visual workflow uses screenshots and reference images to find a visible control before acting on it. This is valuable when an application does not expose a stable automation interface, such as a semantic element tree or a reliable command protocol.
- Capture the current screen. Use the relevant Android, Browser, or Desktop API to obtain an image object representing the current view.
- Provide the image to the Vision API. The vision operation compares the current screenshot with a reference image or searches for a UI element.
- Read the detected position. The result identifies where the matching element appears in the screenshot.

Reference images live in the image-template folder recommended by the getting-started guide. Templates should represent the visual state the bot is looking for; a template captured from one layout, scale, theme, or window size may not match another. Treat those files as part of the script’s source and deployment assets, not as disposable screenshots.
Image matching is also the main maintenance trade-off. A redesign, changed icon, different device scale, or altered browser rendering can make a previously reliable match fail. Scripts that combine visual checks with ordinary page JavaScript or explicit geometry checks can reduce unnecessary matches, but the framework’s documented strength is the ability to react to what is visible.

1. Choose the target APIs

2. Create the project files
Make a project directory, save the main logic as a .js file, and add an image-template directory if the bot must identify controls visually. Keep templates with the project so another machine or a packaged build receives the same assets.
3. Implement a visible state transition
Write the smallest useful sequence first: obtain a screen or page state, locate the required control, send the tap, click, or text input, and verify the resulting state. Botfather’s APIs supply the operations; the script decides their order and what to do when a match is absent.
4. Add recovery conditions
Do not assume that every screen arrives on time or that every image appears at the same coordinates. Add checks for a missing match, an unexpected screen, and a timeout. A recovery branch can capture a diagnostic screenshot, return to a known state, or stop safely rather than sending input to the wrong window.
5. Run on the actual target
Test on the Android device or emulator, browser session, or desktop configuration that will run the bot. Can Botfather scripts be shared and updated?
Yes. Botfather’s scripts page says that scripts may be written by users or cloned from GitHub and GitLab. Scripts cloned from those services can be updated automatically by Botfather, which gives teams a straightforward way to distribute examples or keep a shared automation flow synchronized.

What do I need to build Botfather from source?

CEF is distributed as a binary dependency, so obtaining a compiler alone is not enough. If compiling is unnecessary for your use case, a packaged distribution may be simpler. The project documents a Flatpak nightly build using KDE Platform and SDK runtimes. The click or tap reaches the wrong control

The browser flow behaves differently from the desktop flow
Use page JavaScript and DOM manipulation where the Browser API makes them available, then reserve screenshot matching for states that are genuinely visual. A desktop click sequence cannot be assumed to map to the same coordinates inside an integrated browser window.
A build cannot find a dependency
Recheck the platform-specific list: QtScript must be present alongside Qt5, and CEF, OpenCV, libgit2, and CMake must be discoverable by the build. On Windows, install Visual Studio’s desktop C++ tooling; on Linux, ensure GCC is available before configuring the project.

An automatically updated script changes behavior
Separate development and production copies, review incoming changes, and test image templates on the target environment before allowing an update into a live workflow. Automatic cloning updates are convenient, but they do not replace change control.
Is Botfather a sensible choice for a new automation project?
