Intelligent transformation is not a matter of buying an AI model and attaching it to existing systems. In Tom Allen’s interview for The AI Journal, published on July 28, 2026, Padma Rama Divya Achanta argues that organizations should begin with a meaningful business problem, then build the data, governance, infrastructure, skills and measures needed to solve it responsibly. Her practical distinction is straightforward: rule-based automation performs predefined work, while AI can interpret information, recognize patterns, make predictions and support decisions. The two capabilities work best together. People still provide context, ethics, strategy and accountability, while software handles repeatable processing and analysis.
What does intelligent transformation mean in the age of AI?
For Achanta, intelligent transformation is the redesign of an organization around connected data, automated operations and carefully governed AI rather than the isolated deployment of a new tool. The aim is better business outcomes: faster and more consistent operations, more useful insight and decisions that are informed by evidence without removing human responsibility.

She describes a shift from simply operating infrastructure to building systems that connect databases, cloud platforms, automation, cybersecurity and AI. That shift changes the starting question. Instead of asking, “Which model should we buy?”, leaders should ask which business problem is important enough to solve, whether the available data is trustworthy, how the result will be governed and how success will be measured.
Achanta summarizes the relationship between the technologies this way: “In simple terms, automation helps organizations work faster, while AI helps them work smarter.” In that formulation, automation standardizes known procedures and AI adds interpretation or recommendations where the situation is less predictable.

Why should an organization begin with a business problem?
A defined problem prevents an AI program from becoming an expensive demonstration with no operational owner. Achanta advises setting a clear objective first, then checking whether AI is actually the appropriate way to reach it.
Define the outcome before selecting technology
A useful problem statement identifies the process to improve, the people affected, the decision that should become better and the evidence that would show progress. “Reduce the time required to validate a database build” is more actionable than “introduce generative AI.” The first statement gives engineers a workflow to examine and a baseline to record.

Check whether the data can support the goal
AI cannot compensate for missing, inconsistent or poorly governed information. Achanta repeatedly places data quality and governance ahead of model selection. Leaders should identify the data owners, document where records originate, define access rules and decide how errors will be corrected before allowing an AI system to influence a business decision.
Make adoption part of the design
Her interview warns that organizations can overemphasize tools and models while underinvesting in the conditions that make enterprise AI useful. Integrating a capability into an existing workflow, assigning responsibility and assessing results against meaningful outcomes are more important than producing an impressive demonstration. She also says adoption develops over time, so early plans should allow for training, feedback and revision.
What is the difference between rule-based automation and AI?
Rule-based automation follows instructions that people have defined in advance. AI can process information, identify patterns, predict likely outcomes and offer recommendations when the input is more variable. Neither capability automatically replaces the other.
| Capability | How it works | Best fit | Human responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rule-based automation | Executes a known sequence when specified conditions are met. | Repeatable configuration, validation, deployment and compliance checks. | Define the rules, review exceptions and change the procedure when requirements change. |
| AI-assisted analysis | Interprets information, detects patterns, predicts or recommends an action. | Situations with large or variable inputs where judgment can benefit from additional evidence. | Supply context, test the output, apply ethical and business judgment and accept accountability for the decision. |
| Combined workflow | Automation performs the dependable steps while AI helps people evaluate information or choose among options. | End-to-end processes that contain both standardized work and ambiguous decisions. | Set approval points, monitor quality and retain a person who can intervene or stop the process. |
Achanta puts the boundary in human terms: “The greatest value comes when AI enhances human judgment, not when it attempts to replace it.” That is a perspective from the interview, not a universal technical standard, but it provides a practical test for proposed systems: can the organization explain who reviews the output and who is responsible when it is wrong?

What did the SQL Server and Ansible example actually achieve?
The interview’s concrete implementation example is an Ansible-based framework for SQL Server post-build operations. Engineers had been carrying out repeated configuration, validation and deployment tasks manually. Achanta says the framework converted those steps into a standardized, repeatable workflow.
What changed in the workflow?
- Post-build tasks were identified as a recurring sequence rather than handled as one-off work.
- The sequence was expressed in an Ansible framework so the same configuration and validation logic could be applied consistently.
- Deployment steps became repeatable, reducing the amount of manual intervention required from engineers.
- The resulting process could be checked against the same expected conditions each time, making exceptions easier to identify.
Achanta reports “more than a 90% improvement in operational efficiency.” That number is her reported project result as reproduced by Tom Allen in the 2026 interview. The article does not provide a baseline, measurement method, project date or independent validation, so it should not be treated as a general Ansible benchmark or a guarantee for another SQL Server environment.
What should another team learn from the example?
The transferable lesson is the method, not the percentage: find repetitive work, make the desired state explicit, encode the reliable steps, validate the result and reserve human attention for exceptions. A team considering a similar project should record elapsed time, rework, failure rate and manual touch points before changing the process. Without that baseline, an efficiency claim cannot be interpreted consistently.
What foundation does Achanta recommend for enterprise AI?
When asked how she would build an enterprise, Achanta places foundational controls before advanced AI features. Her recommendations can be organized into four connected layers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Data quality
Organizations need clear ownership, consistent definitions and mechanisms for detecting and correcting bad data. A model trained or prompted with contradictory records can produce an answer that appears plausible while reflecting the underlying inconsistency.
Governance and security
Governance determines who may use a system, which information it may access, how outputs are reviewed and what evidence must be retained. Security controls should cover the data, interfaces, credentials and operational environment, not just the model endpoint. These controls are especially important when an AI recommendation could affect customers, employees, financial decisions or production systems.

Modern, connected infrastructure
Achanta favors cloud-native and API-driven architecture and automation across the technology stack. The point is not that every organization must move everything to one cloud. It is that systems should be able to exchange information through controlled interfaces and that repeatable operational work should not depend on undocumented manual steps.
Measurable business value
AI should be introduced where it can be tied to an outcome that matters to the organization. Possible measures include cycle time, error rate, service availability, rework, decision latency or the quality of a customer result, depending on the process. The selected measure should be agreed before implementation and reviewed after deployment rather than replaced by a count of prompts or model calls.
How can leaders evaluate an AI proposal responsibly?
Achanta’s interview suggests a decision sequence that keeps enthusiasm for new technology in proportion to evidence.
- State the problem and owner. Name the process, the business outcome and the person accountable for the result.
- Map the current workflow. Separate deterministic steps from decisions that require interpretation, context or negotiation.
- Audit the data. Identify sources, quality issues, access permissions, retention requirements and unresolved gaps.
- Choose the least complex useful capability. Use deterministic automation where rules are sufficient; consider AI where interpretation or pattern analysis adds value.
- Design human review. Specify approval points, escalation paths, override rights and the evidence a reviewer will see.
- Set a baseline and success measures. Record current performance and define what improvement would justify continued investment.
- Pilot in a bounded workflow. Limit access and impact while the team tests reliability, security and user adoption.
- Review and iterate. Examine outcomes, exceptions and user feedback, then adjust the data, process or technology before expanding.
This sequence reflects Achanta’s emphasis on meaningful goals, trusted data, governance and integration with existing work. It also makes a negative result useful: if a pilot cannot show value or cannot be governed safely, the organization has evidence not to scale it.
Who remains accountable when AI supports a decision?
Achanta assigns AI a role in processing information, identifying patterns and accelerating decisions, while reserving governance, ethics, business context and responsibility for people. That division means a human owner must be able to understand the decision being supported, challenge an output and stop the process when conditions fall outside the system’s competence.
In practice, accountability should be visible in the workflow. A production process needs a named owner, documented review criteria, an audit trail and a way to correct or roll back an action. An AI output is advice or analysis until an authorized person or governed system accepts it; it is not an excuse to remove responsibility from the organization.

Achanta’s broader warning is captured in another sentence from the interview: “AI is only as effective as the environment in which it operates.” The environment includes technical infrastructure, but also the policies, skills, incentives and quality of information surrounding it.
How does intelligent transformation change enterprise architecture?
The interview portrays enterprise technology as an ecosystem rather than a collection of disconnected tools. Databases hold operational information, cloud platforms provide elastic services, automation enforces repeatable operations, cybersecurity protects the environment and AI helps turn information into insight. API-driven connections allow those capabilities to work together under defined controls.
This architecture has a practical consequence: AI projects should be designed with the existing operating model in mind. A recommendation that cannot reach the system where work is performed, or that requires staff to copy data manually between applications, may add complexity without improving the outcome. Conversely, a small analytical capability embedded in a well-governed workflow can be more valuable than a larger standalone experiment.
What does the shift mean for database administrators and other technology professionals?
Achanta recounts conversations with database administrators about whether AI will replace them. In her account, the useful conversation moved toward how those professionals could grow with AI. Her own career combines enterprise database administration, automation, cloud, artificial intelligence, speaking, authorship, peer review and technology leadership, illustrating the breadth of skills she considers relevant.
For a database professional, growth can mean learning how automation frameworks express desired state, how APIs connect services, how data quality affects analytical results and how governance controls access and auditing. Domain knowledge remains important because an AI system cannot supply the operational context that an experienced administrator brings to a production change. The strongest role is often the person who can explain both the data and the consequences of acting on it.

She also expresses interest in AI-enabled educational technology that could support personalized, interactive learning. The interview does not name a product, vendor or purchasing path, so it does not support a recommendation for a specific education platform. The actionable point is the learning model: people need opportunities to practice, ask questions, share examples and connect new tools to the systems they already operate.
What are the limits of the interview’s evidence?
The interview is an account of Achanta’s experience and recommendations, not a comparative study of enterprise AI outcomes. It does not compare vendors, models or architecture options. The SQL Server efficiency figure is reported without measurement details or independent verification, and the educational technology discussion does not identify a named innovation.

Treat the framework as a set of design principles and the Ansible example as an attributed case, then measure any local implementation with its own baseline, controls and outcome criteria. Do not generalize one project’s result to every organization.
What should an organization do first?
Start with one important, bounded business problem and document how the work is done today. Establish data ownership and quality checks, map the security and governance requirements, automate deterministic steps and introduce AI only where interpretation or pattern recognition can improve a measured outcome. Give people clear review authority, invest in learning and expand only after the evidence supports the next step.
That approach captures the central message of Achanta’s interview: transformation is intelligent when technology, trustworthy information and human judgment are designed as one operating system for the business.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the reported 90% improvement a benchmark that any team can expect?
No. It is a result Achanta reported for her Ansible-based SQL Server post-build framework in the 2026 interview. The publication gives no baseline, calculation method or independent validation, so another team must establish and measure its own starting point.
Did the interview recommend a particular AI model or vendor?
No. It discusses principles such as data readiness, governance, cloud-native and API-driven architecture, workflow integration and measurable value. It does not compare products or identify a model that readers should buy.
What should a governance committee require before approving a pilot?
Require a named business owner, a documented data source and access plan, defined human approval points, security and retention rules, a rollback or stop procedure and success measures agreed before the pilot starts. The committee should also specify what evidence will justify expansion.
How can a database administrator prepare for AI-related work without abandoning core expertise?
Add skills in automation, APIs, data-quality controls, cloud operations and AI-output evaluation while continuing to deepen database fundamentals. Combining operational context with these adjacent capabilities positions the administrator to design, review and govern AI-enabled workflows.
