Canceling iCloud+ does not cut off the paid storage immediately: the change takes effect after the current billing period ends. If your iCloud use is then above the storage allowance you keep, iCloud syncing and updates stop, and new device backups do not complete. Apple’s guidance does not say that canceling automatically deletes all your stored photos and files, but it also does not promise a universal retention period—copy important data before you change plans.
When does the cancellation take effect?
Your iCloud+ downgrade or cancellation takes effect after the current subscription billing period ends, according to Apple Support’s plan-change guidance. Check the end date shown in your subscription settings so you know when the reduced allowance will apply.

What happens if your iCloud use is over the remaining allowance?
Once the lower storage limit applies, an over-quota account cannot operate iCloud normally. Apple says information will not sync or update, and iCloud backups will not complete until you increase storage or remove enough data to fit.

- Backups: New iCloud device backups will not complete.
- Photos: New iCloud Photos items will not upload.
- Files and apps: iCloud Drive and other iCloud apps will stop staying up to date across devices.
- Email: While storage is full, you cannot send or receive messages with an iCloud email address.
Apple says syncing and backups resume after you increase your capacity or delete enough information to make room.

Will your existing photos and files be deleted?
Apple’s cited plan-change guidance describes syncing and backup limits when storage exceeds the new allowance; it does not say that cancellation automatically deletes all existing iCloud content or give one retention deadline for every type of data. Do not assume your data will be kept indefinitely, either. The prudent approach is to download or copy anything important before changing plans.
Be especially careful with iCloud Photos: deleting a photo from one device also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Which iCloud+ features do you lose?
Moving to the free plan removes iCloud+ benefits. Apple lists Hide My Email, Private Relay, Apple Invites, and HomeKit Secure Video support as examples. Feature availability varies by country or region, so check which features are available where you live before deciding whether their loss matters.
Check Apple One and Family Sharing before you cancel
If you also have Apple One
If you pay for Apple One and a separate iCloud+ plan, Apple says you can cancel or downgrade the separate storage plan and use the iCloud+ storage included with Apple One. Confirm the bundle and storage allowance on your account first; the amount you retain depends on what is included in your subscription.

If you use storage shared through Family Sharing
If you leave a Family Sharing group that shares iCloud+, you can buy an individual plan to continue using iCloud storage. Apple says a family member using more than 5 GB who does not do so will be unable to upload new photos and files or back up devices when their use exceeds the storage available to them. How to prepare before changing your plan
- Check your current use. Review how much iCloud storage is occupied and what is using it.
- Work out the allowance you will keep. Include storage from Apple One or Family Sharing if it will remain available to you.
- Copy important content that will not fit. Download or copy photos and files before the lower limit takes effect. A computer and optional external drive can provide a local copy; choose capacity based on the material you export.
- Verify the copy before deleting anything. In particular, do not treat deleting a synced photo as a local-only cleanup.
- After the change, make room or restore capacity if needed. If your account is over quota, remove enough iCloud data or increase the storage allowance for syncing and backups to resume.
