The pilot is limited to mild-to-moderate acne and topical treatments, with physician oversight that becomes less direct as the program advances. It is not a general authorization for AI to prescribe medicine.
How does Nolla Derm’s AI acne prescription app work?
Nolla says users provide informed consent, complete a 10- to 15-minute intake questionnaire, and submit a facial scan. Its system selects only from treatment pathways approved by physicians. The company says a case is routed to a licensed physician if the system cannot confidently choose a treatment. The state record limits the pilot to topical acne treatments.

Who is eligible for the Utah pilot?
Nolla’s announcement describes the service as available to Utah residents aged 18 or older. The state record lists additional exclusions; the pilot is not designed for every person with acne.

Do doctors review the AI-generated prescriptions?
Yes, but the level of review changes by stage. Nolla describes three phases, and Utah’s record says moving to each later stage requires written state approval.
- First 100 patients: A licensed physician reviews and approves every AI-generated prescription.
- Next stage: Prescriptions are issued before physician review.
- Later stage: A physician conducts sampled retrospective review rather than reviewing every prescription first.
The state record also lists operating commitments: checking patients’ identity and age, routing prescriptions only within Utah, notifying pharmacists that a prescription was AI-generated, and reporting adverse events to the state within 24 hours.

What has Utah authorized—and what has it not?
Utah’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy lists Nolla Health, operated by Magic Health, Inc. and Magic Health Services, LLC, as an authorized participant in a defined pilot. The listed term is October 5, 2026, through October 5, 2027. The arrangement describes limited regulatory mitigation in conjunction with the Division of Professional Licensing for this named participant and task.

What does the service cost, and how are prescriptions fulfilled?
Nolla announced a starting price of $4.99 per month. The company says prescriptions may be delivered to a patient’s home or made available for pharmacy pickup. These are company-announced terms and may change; confirm current availability and price with Nolla.

The company and state records describe the program’s workflow, limits, and oversight, but those details do not establish that the system improves acne outcomes or is as effective as a dermatologist’s assessment. The sources for the announcement do not provide an independent clinical outcome statistic, algorithm-accuracy measure, real-world safety results, or the full medication formulary. The pilot’s stated safeguards and staged review should not be mistaken for independent clinical validation.
