A game-studio cyberattack can affect development files, customer-support systems, live services, player records, or the tools used to ship updates—but those are different kinds of incidents. A disruption does not by itself prove that player passwords were stolen, local saves were erased, or a particular patch will be late. Start with the publisher’s dated notice: what it confirms, what it says is still unknown, and which game or service it names. Ubisoft’s disclosures, Take-Two’s accounts of separate 2022 incidents, and Riot’s 2023 patch-cadence statement show why the specific system involved matters.
What can a game-studio cyberattack affect?
It depends on which system an attacker accessed or disrupted. A studio may use separate systems for game development, customer support, online services, player accounts, and release builds. An incident in one area does not establish that the others were compromised.

- Development material: files such as unreleased footage or other internal work may be accessed or taken. Take-Two described downloaded Rockstar development footage in 2022.
- Support systems: a compromised vendor platform can be misused to contact customers. Take-Two separately reported that credentials for a platform supporting 2K customers were misused to send a malicious link to certain players.
- Live services: an attack or response to it can interrupt games, systems, or online services. Ubisoft said some of its games and services were temporarily disrupted in March 2022.
- Player-held records: an incident may affect account information, online inventory, or progression, but the operator needs to say what data was involved. A publisher-hosted inventory is not the same thing as a save file stored on a player’s device.
- Release tools: a disruption to a build environment can affect the process of preparing patches. Riot said in January 2023, as quoted by BleepingComputer, that it expected an impact on patch cadence across multiple games.
These categories help make sense of an announcement, but they are not a checklist of things every attack reaches. A studio can report a service outage without confirming data theft, or a data exposure without saying that local saves were involved.
Were player accounts hacked?
Not necessarily. An attack on a game company is not proof that its player database or every player account was accessed; rely on the operator’s statement about the incident and preserve its time qualification.

After the March 2022 disruption, Ubisoft said it had no evidence at that time that player personal information had been accessed or exposed. That was a statement about what the company knew then, not a universal assurance about other incidents. In a separate update on January 30, 2026, the Rainbow Six Siege team said it had no indication at that stage that player personal data or source code had been compromised in the cyberattack it was discussing.
Take-Two’s descriptions of 2022 incidents illustrate another important distinction. The Rockstar incident involved downloaded development material; separately, a compromised vendor platform supporting 2K customers was used to send a malicious link to certain players. Those reports do not establish that all Rockstar or 2K account passwords were stolen.
Even when a company reports no indication of exposure, treat that wording as incident-specific and time-bound. If a notice later changes, follow its current instructions rather than assuming that an earlier assessment settles the matter permanently.
Are my game saves and online progress safe?
There is no single answer for all games, because “save” can mean a local file, a cloud copy, or progress and inventory held by the publisher. Identify where the game stores the specific data you care about before deciding whether a personal backup can help.

Local saves and platform backups
A local save may be copyable if the game and platform permit it. Ubisoft’s documented PC restore guidance starts with a backup copy of the game’s save folder; for supported cloud-saving games, the instructions describe selecting the restored local save on the next launch. Confirm the correct folder and the game’s save behavior before copying or replacing files. A separate drive can hold a copy, but it cannot recreate a save that was never backed up.
For a PS5, PlayStation documents saved data as part of a console backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB device. The path is Settings → System → System Software → Back Up and Restore → Back Up Your PS5. This is a full-console backup process, not a promise that every game’s save can be exported individually. PlayStation warns that restoring a console backup erases current data on the console; the backup is linked to the PlayStation account under the documented conditions. Some progress is tied to an online account rather than a file a player can copy. Ubisoft says Rainbow Six Siege cross-progression is saved to the Ubisoft account, not the platform account. In its January 30, 2026 update, the Siege team stated, “Following the recent cyberattack, player inventories were restored.” The team also said the Marketplace was temporarily closed while protections were improved. That report describes the operator’s recovery for that incident; it does not show that a USB or local save can restore an online inventory, nor does it establish the Marketplace’s status now.
If a rank, purchase, currency balance, or cosmetic looks wrong, keep screenshots and relevant transaction records, then use the game’s official support channel. A local backup may help with an eligible local save, but it is not a substitute for the publisher’s records or recovery process for online progress.

Do not confuse a save bug with attack damage
Insomniac’s support page about missing saves describes a game bug addressed in update 1.002.000, not a stated consequence of its cybersecurity incident. The page recommends checking an in-game backup save and, for eligible subscribers, PlayStation Plus cloud saves; it also warns that lost data cannot always be recovered. That support guidance is useful for the bug it covers, but it is not evidence that the studio attack erased Spider-Man saves.
Can an attack delay the next patch?
It can affect the tools or workflow used to prepare an update, but an incident report does not establish that every upcoming patch will be delayed. In January 2023, Riot’s statement, reproduced by BleepingComputer, said a disrupted build environment was expected to affect patch cadence across multiple games. Riot also expressed confidence that player personal information had not been compromised.

The cases below demonstrate why the affected system and the operator’s exact wording matter. They are examples, not a measure of how often player data or saves are affected across the industry.

There is no established cross-industry percentage of players affected, typical restoration time, or general probability of save loss in these examples. The practical questions are narrower: which system was involved, whether exposure is confirmed or only provisionally ruled out, where your progress is stored, and what recovery the operator has actually announced.

Match your response to the confirmed risk. A notice about a vendor support platform and malicious links calls for phishing caution; a notice about account data may call for account-security steps; a service outage alone does not tell you that a password or save was exposed.
- Read the dated official notice. Confirm the affected game or service, the incident date, the categories of information the company names, and whether its statement is confirmed, preliminary, or still under investigation. Check back for updates if the publisher says its investigation is ongoing.
- Open the account through the official app or typed-in website address. Avoid login links in unexpected emails or messages. A malicious link was used in the separate 2K support-platform incident described by Take-Two, so a message that appears game-related is not, by itself, proof that it is safe.
- Review the relevant account for changes you do not recognize. If something looks wrong, use the publisher’s official support channel and follow the incident-specific guidance. Do not assume that an account problem proves the cause was the reported cyberattack.
- Use a unique password and two-step verification where available. Rockstar’s account-protection guidance recommends security practices for a Rockstar account; use the relevant publisher’s own instructions for other services.
- Back up eligible local saves separately. For PC, verify the correct save folder and cloud-save behavior first. For PS5, review PlayStation’s full-console backup and restore cautions before proceeding. These measures protect only data the platform or game lets you back up; they do not repair a studio network or rebuild an online inventory.
How should I interpret a recovery announcement?
Look for the data type and the action described, not just the word “restored.” A studio may restore an online inventory from its own records, recover employee files from backups, or return a service to operation; those are different outcomes and do not imply that every affected system or user record was restored.
Ubisoft’s Siege statement about restored inventories is a specific example of operator-side recovery. By contrast, the CD PROJEKT statements described employee-related files and uncertainty about the exact contents of data that appeared to circulate. Neither account supports a general promise that a player can recover every lost item or that all exposed material has been contained.

When the notice is unclear, distinguish what it says happened from what remains unknown. A confirmed service interruption, a reported file download, and an investigation that has found no indication of player-data compromise are separate facts; they should not be collapsed into a single claim that “accounts were hacked” or “saves were wiped.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a cyberattack mean every game from that publisher is affected?
No such conclusion follows from an incident affecting named games, systems, or services. For example, Ubisoft’s March 2022 notice referred to some games and services; it did not establish that every title in its catalog had the same disruption or data exposure.
Can I know from a news headline whether my account was exposed?
Usually not: headlines often compress different systems and stages of an investigation. Check the publisher’s notice for the affected service, data categories, and date, then follow any account-specific notification or support instructions.
Does reinstalling a game recover a missing save?
The cases described here do not establish reinstalling as a recovery method. Whether progress returns depends on where that game stores it and whether a valid local, platform-cloud, or publisher-side copy exists.
