Spoilers for the complete Bhaalspawn saga: Baldur’s Gate (1998), Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000), Throne of Bhaal (2001), and Siege of Dragonspear (2016).
You do not need to play the first two games to understand or finish Baldur’s Gate 3. The older games tell the story of a child of the dead god Bhaal, raised by the Harper Gorion; that hero survives Sarevok, Jon Irenicus and the last Bhaalspawn war. Baldur’s Gate 3 begins in 1492 DR, roughly 120 years after the original saga, with a new protagonist, illithid tadpoles and the Absolute. The history still matters: Bhaal has returned, his cult operates in the city, and Jaheira, Minsc, Boo and Sarevok appear again. This recap gives you the continuity without requiring a playthrough of games built on a very different rules system.

The first two numbered games and their expansions form one story, usually called the Bhaalspawn saga. The opening game takes place in 1368 DR, the linked events run through 1370 DR, and Baldur’s Gate 3 opens in 1492 DR. That is about 120 years later; descriptions of “a century later” are a rounded shorthand.

The full release of Baldur’s Gate 3 was August 3, 2023. An October 6, 2020 date sometimes shown in older listings refers to its Early Access launch, not the finished release.

Why are there Bhaalspawn?
During the Time of Troubles, the gods of Faerûn were forced to walk the world as mortals. Bhaal, the god of murder, was killed, and the divine portfolio passed to Cyric. Bhaal had foreseen his death and had already fathered many children. Each child carried a fragment of his divine essence, and his plan was for those children to murder one another until the fragments reunited and restored him.
Gorion, a Harper, rescued one infant from Bhaal’s cult and raised the child in Candlekeep. The games call the player character Gorion’s Ward; Forgotten Realms prose and later canon give the default hero the name Abdel Adrian, a good-aligned human fighter. Your created character is still the protagonist of the games, so class, alignment and companions can differ from the canon version.

Gorion’s death and the journey from Candlekeep
The Ward grows up alongside foster-sister Imoen. Gorion suddenly takes the Ward out of Candlekeep because assassins are closing in. An armored warrior ambushes them on the road. Gorion orders the Ward to run and is killed; the attacker is Sarevok, another child of Bhaal. Imoen catches up the next morning, and Gorion’s letter directs the pair to the Friendly Arm Inn, where Harper allies Khalid and Jaheira can help.
The Iron Crisis
Weapons and tools across the Sword Coast are breaking because the iron supply has been poisoned. The investigation leads through Nashkel, where the kobold leader Mulahey contaminates the mines, then to a bandit operation connected to the merchant house Iron Throne. The Cloakwood mines reveal Iron Throne emissary Davaeorn and the industrial scale of the scheme.
Minsc can join the party, usually with his hamster Boo, and the Ward can rescue the witch Dynaheir. Nightmares and an emerging healing gift signal that Bhaal’s blood is waking. Elminster, the red-robed sage and Gorion’s friend, appears as an adviser during the journey.
Candlekeep, the doppelgangers and Sarevok’s coup
In Baldur’s Gate, Flaming Fist officer Scar and Duke Eltan enlist the party to investigate doppelgangers infiltrating merchant houses. Evidence points back to the Iron Throne leaders, who have gone to Candlekeep. Returning there, the Ward finds Alaundo’s prophecy about Bhaal’s descendants and a letter confirming the Ward’s parentage. “Koveras,” a supposed ally encountered in the keep, is Sarevok using a disguise. The Ward is framed for murder and escapes through the catacombs with Tethtoril’s help.

The first finale
Sarevok wants a war between Baldur’s Gate and Amn. The mass deaths would feed his Bhaalspawn essence and let him become the new Lord of Murder. The Ward defeats him in the temple and becomes a hero of the city. Tales of the Sword Coast adds side adventures such as Durlag’s Tower before the finale but does not change this ending.
What does Siege of Dragonspear add between the two games?
Siege of Dragonspear is the later-made bridge between the original games. It is set weeks after Sarevok’s defeat, while the Ward is still suppressing his followers. Caelar Argent, the Shining Lady, leads a crusade, and the Ward joins Baldur’s Gate’s forces. A mysterious wizard observes the campaign; near the site of Bhaal’s death, the Ward has a vision and brands Bhaal’s symbol into the ground.
Caelar is trying to reach Avernus and free a relative imprisoned by the demon Belhifet. The Ward defeats Belhifet, and Caelar may remain in Avernus to guard the portal. At the victory celebration, a duke’s daughter is murdered in front of the Ward. The watching wizard frames the hero, leading to arrest, escape and an ambush. That ambush delivers the Ward to the dungeon where Baldur’s Gate II begins.

The expansion is advertised as a 25-hour adventure. It is optional for understanding the main conflict, but it supplies the missing transition that the original release pairing largely skipped.
What happens in Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn?
Irenicus steals the Ward’s soul
The same protagonist wakes in an Amnish dungeon, being tortured by the elven mage Jon Irenicus. Imoen frees the Ward, and Minsc and Jaheira can be rescued from cages. Khalid, Jaheira’s husband, and Dynaheir are already dead. The survivors reach Athkatla, where Imoen uses unsanctioned magic against Irenicus. The Cowled Wizards arrest both Imoen and Irenicus and send them to Spellhold, a prison for dangerous mages.
Reaching Spellhold
The Ward must raise a large sum of gold and choose a faction route: the Shadow Thieves or Bodhi’s vampires. Published recaps disagree about the fee, giving either 15,000 or 20,000 gold pieces, so there is no single figure to treat as definitive. The bounty hunter Yoshimo joins the party and later betrays it. Bodhi is Irenicus’s sister.
Irenicus was once respected in the elven city of Suldanessellar. His pursuit of power led to exile and the loss of his elven heritage; Bodhi became a vampire. When Irenicus learned that Bhaalspawn carried divine sparks, he saw the Ward and Imoen as a route to godlike power.

The Underdark and Suldanessellar
At Spellhold, Irenicus takes control, provokes the Ward’s rage and steals the divine souls of both siblings. He keeps the Ward’s spark, while Bodhi receives Imoen’s. The Ward can now transform into the Slayer, a monstrous Bhaalspawn form. The pursuit runs through the Underdark, including a mission in which a silver dragon disguises the party as drow so stolen eggs can be recovered.
The party kills Bodhi, allowing Imoen’s soul to return, and follows Irenicus to Suldanessellar. He attacks the Tree of Life to complete his apotheosis. The heroes defeat him there, but the confrontation continues in Hell. A final duel restores the Ward’s soul. The remaining divine essence is the direct setup for Throne of Bhaal.
How does Throne of Bhaal end the Bhaalspawn saga?
The Five and the siege of Saradush
As Bhaalspawn die, the surviving children grow stronger. The Ward is drawn into the siege of Saradush and meets Melissan, who presents herself as an ally. The strongest rivals, known as the Five, are Illasera, Sendai, Abazigal, Balthazar and Yaga-Shura. Their methods range from drow magic and a blue-dragon army to a ritual that makes a fire giant invulnerable. Illasera falls early; the others are defeated in turn.
Sarevok can return from death and join the Ward if the Ward gives him a portion of the soul. A Solar tests the protagonist in a personal pocket plane, where the player’s choices shape the final form of the character.
Melissan’s betrayal
Melissan is really Amelyssan the Blackhearted, a former high priestess of Bhaal. She engineered the war so the Five’s deaths would gather the divine sparks in one place. At the Throne of Bhaal, she tries to absorb that power and become the new goddess of murder.
The three game endings
- Ascend benevolently: the Ward accepts the power and becomes a good or neutral deity.
- Remain mortal: the Ward destroys the Throne and gives up the divine inheritance.
- Ascend as an evil god: the Ward takes Bhaal’s place as the new Lord of Murder.
The choice is meaningful inside the game, but later Forgotten Realms canon establishes a specific outcome for the setting used by Baldur’s Gate 3.
Which ending is canon before Baldur’s Gate 3?
Canon identifies the protagonist as Abdel Adrian, who chose the mortal ending. He eventually joined the Flaming Fist and became a beloved Duke of Baldur’s Gate. His Bhaalspawn heritage allowed him to remain healthy for about a century.

Another survivor, Viekang, could teleport whenever frightened and had avoided the Five. In the later Murder in Baldur’s Gate continuity, Viekang and Abdel fight; one kills the other and becomes the Slayer, and the Slayer is then killed. The death of the last Bhaalspawn reunites the scattered divine sparks, bringing Bhaal back as the god of murder.

Which returning characters matter in Baldur’s Gate 3?
- Jaheira: the Harper companion from the first two games. As a half-elf, she can live close to two centuries, explaining her presence in 1492 DR.
- Minsc and Boo: the heroic ranger and his hamster return. Minsc spent most of the intervening century petrified; later stories explain his eventual restoration.
- Sarevok Anchev: the first game’s villain and an optional Throne of Bhaal companion appears as judge of the Murder Tribunal.
- Volo: he survives the gap after being trapped in a spell around 1385 DR for roughly 100 years.
- Bhaal: the resurrected god and his clandestine temple drive the Bhaalspawn-related plot.
- Imoen: the Ward’s foster-sister and fellow Bhaalspawn remains central to the old saga, although she is not presented as a returning companion in Baldur’s Gate 3.
In the newer game, the Dark Urge helped Enver Gortash steal the Crown of Karsus and recruit Ketheric Thorm. Orin later tadpoled the Dark Urge and left them for dead, creating a believable origin for a player character who is a Bhaalspawn without being the original hero.
Do you need to play the old games, and what order should you use?
No. Baldur’s Gate 3 is designed as a standalone story. Prior knowledge mainly adds context to names, cameos and Bhaal-related revelations. The rules and presentation also differ: the first games use real-time-with-pause combat and an isometric Infinity Engine, while Baldur’s Gate 3 uses turn-based Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition combat and a free camera.
Best order for the complete story
- Baldur’s Gate plus Tales of the Sword Coast
- Siege of Dragonspear
- Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn plus Throne of Bhaal
- Baldur’s Gate 3
This is chronological order. Release order starts with the 1998 game, adds Tales of the Sword Coast in 1999, Shadows of Amn in 2000, Throne of Bhaal in 2001, and reaches Siege of Dragonspear only in 2016. The two Dark Alliance action RPGs are spin-offs set in the same world, not chapters of the Bhaalspawn saga, so they are unnecessary here.
What is the current way to play Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2?
The practical route is the Enhanced Editions. They include quality-of-life and graphical updates, restored content and additional companions or quests, with Siege of Dragonspear designed to sit between the two main campaigns.

The Nintendo eShop listing describes more than 100 hours across the enhanced games and Siege of Dragonspear. If you only want the narrative bridge, the expansion is described as a 25-hour adventure. The original PC Enhanced Edition launched on Windows on November 28, 2012; the console editions followed in 2019.

Reading the three tie-in novels or watching a complete saga recap can provide the outline faster, but the novels use Abdel Adrian and cannot reproduce the games’ branching party choices. Playing remains the only way to experience those decisions directly.
What should a new player remember before starting Baldur’s Gate 3?
- The original hero and the Dark Urge are different Bhaalspawn.
- Sarevok is both an old antagonist and a later participant in the Bhaalspawn story.
- Jaheira and Minsc are survivors of the earlier era, not newly introduced adventurers.
- Bhaal’s return follows the death of the last Bhaalspawn, so his presence in the newer game is intentional continuity.
- The central conflict changes from divine inheritance to illithid parasites and the Absolute, so the older saga is context rather than required homework.

Is Abdel Adrian the character I must create in the Enhanced Editions?
No. Abdel Adrian is the name used for the canon Forgotten Realms version of the protagonist. In the games, you create Gorion’s Ward yourself, choosing the character’s appearance, class, alignment and many relationships.
Are the Dark Alliance games required to understand the story?
No. They are action-RPG spin-offs set in the Baldur’s Gate setting rather than chapters in the Bhaalspawn saga. Skipping them does not remove any plot needed for the first two numbered games or Baldur’s Gate 3.
