Etsy allows some AI-assisted products when a seller contributes individualized creative input to each specific item and discloses AI use in the listing description. The policy does not allow automated, bot-generated listings without item-specific human oversight, AI-generated functional instructions, or standalone AI prompt bundles. Sellers also need truthful listing images: under Etsy’s AI-specific guidance dated October 22, 2026, a listing that uses AI in its images must include at least one unedited photo against a real background.
What do Etsy’s Creativity Standards say about AI-assisted products?
Etsy permits seller-prompted AI creations in its “Designed by a seller” category, provided the seller’s own original prompts and creative contribution are involved and the listing discloses AI use. AI does not create an exception to Etsy’s other rules: the seller remains responsible for accurately describing the item and complying with policies on intellectual property, privacy, publicity, and content.

The practical question is not simply whether AI was used. It is what the buyer is purchasing, what the seller contributed to that particular item, and whether the listing represents it honestly.

What human contribution does Etsy expect?
Etsy says a listed item must involve a human touch. For AI creations, that means direct, individualized prompting, curation, and creative input for the specific item—not simply running an automated process that produces many items without meaningful oversight.
A seller can use a generative tool as part of making a creative work, but responsibility for the result remains with the seller. The human role must be connected to the particular output being offered, rather than limited to setting up a process that generates interchangeable listings in bulk.
What can count as a qualifying creative result?
Etsy gives two examples: a fantasy scene created from the seller’s original prompt, and a custom AI-generated portrait of a buyer’s pet. These examples illustrate creative outputs in which a seller’s direction or customization contributes to the work. They are not blanket approval of every product made with similar software; each listing still has to meet the applicable standards.
What is not enough?
Automated generation without individualized human oversight falls outside the allowed approach described in Etsy’s AI-specific guidance. Merely offering an AI output for sale does not establish that the seller designed it in the relevant sense. Sellers should be able to explain their own contribution to the specific item and ensure the finished listing accurately describes that role.

Which AI-assisted listings are allowed, and which are prohibited?
Creative output may qualify when the seller makes an individualized contribution and discloses AI use. Etsy draws a separate line around AI-generated functional instructions and prompt bundles: those are prohibited, even when presented as digital products.

Why does Etsy distinguish creative output from instructions?
The distinction concerns the item’s purpose. A creative work—such as an artwork—is different from a product whose main function is telling a buyer how to complete a task. Etsy specifically names craft patterns, recipes, project plans, assembly or instruction manuals, and task-oriented instructional guides or ebooks as functional instructions that may not be generated by AI. Packaging such material as a digital download does not change its function.
For those instructional products, Etsy’s guidance says the instructions themselves must be the seller’s own work. That rule is distinct from the disclosure requirement for an AI-assisted creative item: adding a disclosure does not make a prohibited AI-generated instruction product acceptable.
How do Etsy’s seller categories apply to AI work?
Etsy organizes eligible items under four roles: “Made by a seller,” “Designed by a seller,” “Handpicked by a seller,” and “Sourced by a seller.” A seller-prompted AI creation belongs under “Designed by a seller,” not automatically under “Made by a seller.” Etsy also includes original designs sold as digital downloads or produced with disclosed production partners in the designed category.

Category selection does not override the limits on what can be sold. A seller may have made an original prompt, for example, but that alone does not make a separately sold prompt bundle permitted. Likewise, a digital format does not turn AI-generated functional instructions into an eligible creative work.
What must sellers disclose about AI use?
Sellers must disclose in the listing description when an item was created with the use of AI. Etsy’s Creativity Standards and its October 22, 2026 Seller Handbook guidance both describe the disclosure requirement. It applies to the AI-created item; using a digital-download format or involving a production partner does not remove the seller’s responsibility to describe the listing accurately.
The description should let a buyer understand the nature of the item they will receive, including the seller’s role and any relevant production-partner involvement. Etsy’s guidance says sellers must not present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation, and they must accurately describe any production partner. Disclosure is therefore one part of truthful listing information, not a substitute for it.
What rules apply to AI-generated listing images?
Listing images must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive. Etsy says AI tools may not be used to alter photos so an item appears better, higher quality, or materially different. If AI is used in listing images, Etsy’s October 22, 2026 guidance requires at least one unedited photo against a real background.

For visual digital downloads
Etsy Help says to include a preview of the actual content for visual digital downloads. A promotional image should not leave buyers with a misleading impression of what the downloadable file contains. The preview and the rest of the listing should make the relationship between the displayed image and the delivered item clear.
For physical items
Use images that show the actual item honestly. Do not use AI alterations to imply a finish, quality, feature, or appearance that the buyer will not receive. If AI appears in any listing image, include the required unedited photo against a real background as well.

How can a seller check a borderline AI listing?
Work through the product’s purpose, the seller’s role, the disclosure, and the images before publishing. A listing that fails on one of these points may be ineligible or misleading even if it passes the others.
- Identify what the buyer is buying. Is it a creative result, such as artwork, or is its main purpose to instruct the buyer in completing a task? Etsy’s prohibition applies to AI-generated functional instructions, including the examples listed above.
- Describe the seller’s contribution to this item. Determine whether there was direct, individualized prompting, curation, and creative input for the specific work. An automated, bulk-produced output without that item-level involvement does not meet the stated expectation.
- Choose the accurate seller role. Seller-prompted AI artwork falls under “Designed by a seller.” Do not describe it as handmade or entirely your own creation if that would misstate how it was made.
- Write the AI disclosure in the listing description. Make clear that AI was used to create the item. Describe any production partner accurately rather than implying the seller carried out work that the partner performed.
- Check each image against the delivered item. Avoid AI edits that make the product look better, higher quality, or materially different. Include an unedited real-background photo when AI is used in listing images; for visual digital downloads, include a preview of the actual content.
- Review the other applicable policies. Confirm the work and listing comply with Etsy’s intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, and content rules. AI involvement does not shift that responsibility away from the seller.
What can happen if a listing violates the standards?
Etsy says violations may lead to listing removal. Severe or repeated violations may result in permanent shop closure. Because AI assistance does not exempt an item from the other policies, a seller should assess the complete listing and product—not just whether AI use has been disclosed.

Do I have to name the AI tool in my Etsy listing?
Etsy’s October 22, 2026 Seller Handbook guidance requires disclosure that AI was used to create the item. The guidance described here does not specify a requirement to name a particular model or tool, so sellers should avoid treating tool-name disclosure as a substitute for clearly stating AI use.
Do Etsy’s AI rules apply to a design made by a production partner?

Can I sell the prompts I used to make an artwork?
