There is no single, permanently fixed version of ChatGPT. Available models, tools, usage limits, and interface options can vary with your plan and settings. OpenAI can also change those offerings, so an option shown in one account may not appear in another.
How does ChatGPT work?
At a high level, ChatGPT uses a foundation model trained to recognize patterns in information such as text, images, audio, and video. When it produces a text answer, the model predicts a likely next word in context, then repeats that process one word at a time until it has formed a response.

OpenAI explains that its models learn relationships in training information, including how words tend to appear together in context. The company says model development draws on three broad sources: publicly available internet information, information obtained through third-party partnerships, and information provided or generated by users, human trainers, and researchers. That description does not mean every model uses every item, nor that ChatGPT simply retrieves and pastes a training document.
Several continuations can be plausible for the same prompt. The system therefore may choose a different wording or emphasis when you ask the same question again. A response is generated, not guaranteed to be a database lookup or a checked factual report. Some features can consult external sources or work with your files, but those capabilities depend on what is enabled for your account.
What can I use ChatGPT for?

Ask it to expose each step rather than only giving an answer when you are studying mathematics, science, or a technical subject. Use a textbook, teacher, or authoritative reference to verify important details.

You can ask for a trip-planning checklist, a project sequence, meeting questions, a meal plan, or a decision framework. State constraints such as budget, time, location, accessibility needs, or required tools. Plans involving safety, health, law, finances, or current rules need independent confirmation.
Coding and data work
ChatGPT can explain code, suggest an implementation, help locate a bug, or transform data when the relevant tools are available. Give it the language, runtime, error message, expected behavior, and a small reproducible example. Run generated code in a controlled environment and inspect it for security, privacy, and correctness before using it in production.
Images, files, audio, and translation

Can ChatGPT search the web?
It can when Search is enabled for your account. Web search is useful for information that changes, such as current events, opening hours, product documentation, or recently updated rules. A normal conversation without that tool may answer from the model’s learned patterns rather than checking a live page.
When a question matters, ask for sources or open the cited pages yourself. Check the publication date, geographic scope, and whether the source actually supports the statement. Search results can be incomplete, and a generated summary can still misinterpret a source.
How should I write a prompt?
You do not need special syntax, but you should state the task and the conditions that determine a good answer. A useful prompt normally identifies the goal, context, audience, constraints, and output format.

What is the difference between Voice Mode and Dictation?
Voice Mode is a spoken back-and-forth conversation: you talk, ChatGPT responds aloud, and the interaction can feel more like a live dialogue. OpenAI’s current Voice information says a Live option may also use other tools when those tools are available to the account.
Dictation is different. It records what you say and turns the recording into editable text that you can review before sending. Names, technical terms, punctuation, and accents can be transcribed incorrectly, so read the text before submitting it.
Can ChatGPT remember previous conversations?
Chat context and Memory are separate ideas. Within one conversation, ChatGPT can use earlier turns as context. Memory, when enabled and available, can retain or use relevant information developed across conversations and other available sources.

Memory versus custom instructions
Custom instructions are guidance you deliberately write, such as your preferred format, profession, or writing style. Memory is information the system may retain or use from interactions. What does Temporary Chat do?
Temporary Chat is a separate conversation option. OpenAI describes it as not appearing in chat history, not using or creating memories, and not being used to train models. It is useful when you do not want the conversation to contribute to your normal history or personalization, but it does not remove the need to avoid sharing information unnecessarily.

How do I control my data and privacy?

The Help Center also documents options to export account data or delete an account. Labels and settings can change, so confirm the current wording in your own account before relying on a particular control.

Why can ChatGPT be wrong?

How do plan and settings affect what I can do?
Plan, region, device, account status, and settings can affect which models and tools appear, how much you can use them, and whether features such as Search, deep research, file analysis, Voice, Memory, Projects, or scheduled tasks are available. Limits and prices are changeable, so do not treat an old article or screenshot as a current entitlement.
If a feature is missing, check that you are signed in to the intended account, update the app, review settings, and confirm regional availability.
