Heavy AI spending creates real financial and infrastructure risks, but the available evidence does not prove that the investment cycle will fail. The main exposures are that demand or revenue falls short of expectations, financing becomes more costly, hardware loses value sooner than expected, or power and grid constraints delay projects and shift costs onto local communities. These risks can compound: a delayed, underused data centre still has to be financed, while its equipment may be ageing before it earns the returns investors expected.
Why does Big Tech’s AI spending create risk?
AI infrastructure requires large, early commitments to data centres, servers, advanced chips, electricity supply and cooling. Much of that spending occurs before companies know how quickly customers will adopt AI services, how much they will pay, or how much revenue the infrastructure will generate. The central risk is therefore a mismatch: costs arrive now, while returns are uncertain and may take longer to materialise.

The scale is substantial. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that capital expenditure by five large technology companies exceeded USD 400 billion in 2025, and expected it to rise by a further 75% in 2026. The 2026 number is an outlook, not a final observed result. It indicates how much investment is being planned, not whether those projects will be completed or produce adequate returns. The IEA’s 2026 executive summary also says data-centre investment has grown too large to be funded from company balance sheets alone.
That distinction matters. A large investment is not automatically a bad one, and a rising share price is not proof that the underlying infrastructure is profitable. The key questions are whether demand materialises, whether revenue covers operating and financing costs, and whether facilities and equipment remain useful long enough to recover their cost.

What are the main financial risks?
Financial exposure comes from uncertain returns, funding conditions and the possibility that costly assets stop earning before their costs have been recovered. These are connected risks rather than independent items on a checklist.
Expected demand may not become profitable revenue
Companies may build capacity in anticipation of future demand. If customers adopt AI more slowly than expected, use less capacity, or are unwilling to pay enough to cover the expense, revenue could lag the investment. Even strong adoption would not, by itself, settle profitability: the relevant question is what remains after costs such as computing infrastructure, energy, operations and financing.
It is therefore important to separate evidence of enthusiasm from evidence of returns. The IEA estimated that companies deploying AI or integrating it into core operations accounted for about USD 12 trillion of the USD 16 trillion increase in S&P 500 market capitalisation from November 2022 through the end of 2024. That is a market-valuation figure. It does not measure AI revenue, data-centre returns or the profit earned on infrastructure spending. Investors may be valuing expected future gains, but the valuation alone cannot show whether those expectations will be met. The figure and its context appear in the IEA’s 2025 Energy and AI executive summary.
Financing may become less favourable
As investment exceeds what companies can fund from internal resources alone, capital-market appetite and borrowing conditions matter more. If financing costs rise, investors become less willing to fund projects, or expected returns weaken, a company may face more expensive funding or have to reconsider the pace and scope of its plans. That can affect projects even when the underlying technology remains promising.
The IEA’s 2026 assessment makes the financing dependence explicit: “Data centre investments have grown too large to be funded from company balance sheets alone.” The implication is not that every company is in immediate distress. It is that the buildout increasingly depends on outside capital and on confidence that future returns justify the spending.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported more than USD 100 billion in hyperscaler bond financing since January 2025, undertaken in anticipation of future expenditures. It also discusses leveraged loans and intercorporate arrangements. The IMF says “financial stability risks remain contained” in its assessment of hyperscaler debt issuance, while warning that higher debt could create future macrofinancial risks. That distinction should be preserved: the cited assessment is not a claim that current borrowing has already produced a financial crisis. See the IMF’s April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report, Chapter 1.

AI servers contain expensive GPUs and advanced chips. If newer hardware makes older equipment less useful for the workloads that customers want, the period in which an asset can earn a return may be shorter than the period assumed in accounting estimates. This can leave a company recovering the cost of equipment over a longer span than the equipment remains economically competitive.
IMF staff estimates put the average implied useful life of hyperscaler property, plant and equipment at around seven years, based on reported depreciation figures. The IMF notes that GPUs and advanced chips, which account for a major share of AI server and infrastructure costs, could become obsolete sooner. This does not mean every chip becomes unusable or worthless on the same schedule: equipment can have different uses and lifetimes. The risk is that a shorter useful life for important components narrows the window for earning back their cost.
How can project delays and infrastructure constraints add to the risk?
AI facilities need more than financing and hardware: they need electricity, grid connections, cooling, equipment and the approvals required to build and operate. A shortage or delay in any of these can push back a project’s start, raise costs or limit how much capacity it can use. If a facility is delayed, the company may still have capital tied up in land, equipment or construction while the expected revenue is postponed.
The IEA’s central projection for total data-centre electricity consumption is 485 TWh in 2025 and 950 TWh in 2030. These are projections for data centres overall, not for AI alone. They help show why power availability is a planning issue for the sector, but they do not tell a reader whether a particular project will secure a grid connection, run at full capacity or earn a return. The IEA discusses the energy-AI relationship and infrastructure constraints in its 2026 Powering Artificial Intelligence executive summary.

Power constraints can also interact with hardware risk. A project that waits for grid access may begin operating later than planned; if equipment has a limited period of strong economic usefulness, delay can leave less time to recover its cost at the expected rate. The precise effect will depend on the project, its equipment, its power arrangements and what customers demand. The available figures do not establish a universal delay or cost for data-centre projects.
What can heavy AI spending mean for electricity costs and communities?
Global electricity totals are not a reliable stand-in for a particular town’s experience. Demand is geographically concentrated, and local effects depend on where a facility connects, the condition of the grid, how power is generated and what else is competing for capacity. A global share therefore cannot establish whether a specific data centre will raise bills, increase emissions or create a local shortage.
The IEA’s 2025 report estimated that data centres used around 1.5% of global electricity in 2024, equivalent to 415 TWh. That is a total for data centres, not AI alone, and the global percentage does not describe the impact on an individual power system. The IEA warns that if the electricity sector does not keep up, data-centre load growth could involve trade-offs with goals such as electrification, manufacturing growth or affordability. It describes a possible pressure, not a universal price increase caused by every data centre. The estimate and warning are in the IEA’s 2025 discussion of the energy-AI nexus.
Cooling is another part of the local infrastructure picture, alongside electricity and grid connections. The effects can vary with a facility’s design and location. A global electricity figure alone cannot show local cooling needs or their consequences, so claims about a particular community require location-specific evidence.

How do the risks reinforce one another?
The largest exposure may arise when several assumptions fail together. A company can manage one unexpected cost more easily than a combination of delayed construction, underused capacity, higher borrowing costs and equipment that loses economic usefulness sooner than forecast. A useful way to assess the risk is to trace how an event would affect both cash flows and the time available to earn them.

- Lower-than-expected use: If a facility attracts less demand than planned, the company has less revenue with which to cover the investment and ongoing costs.
- More expensive funding: If outside capital becomes costlier or harder to obtain, the cost of completing or expanding projects may rise, or planned capacity may be delayed.
- Late power access: If a site cannot draw the power it needs on schedule, its productive use and revenue may begin later than expected even if construction is complete.
- Faster hardware turnover: If key equipment becomes economically less useful sooner than the accounting assumptions imply, a delayed or lightly used facility has less time to earn back its hardware cost.
- Local system constraints: If grid capacity is limited, a project may face delivery constraints while communities and other users also need electricity. The balance depends on local conditions, not the global data-centre share.
This is a risk map, not a prediction that all these events will occur. It explains why large investment totals alone cannot establish either success or failure: outcomes depend on utilisation, revenue, financing, asset lifetimes and infrastructure delivery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you judge whether a company’s AI spending is risky?
Compare commitments with outcomes, and distinguish forecasts from realised figures. A capital-spending announcement says what a company intends or expects to invest; it does not establish how much has been spent, how much capacity is operating or what returns that capacity produces.
For a company or project, the most informative questions are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- What is committed, and what has actually been spent? Keep planned investment separate from completed expenditure and operating assets.
- Where does the funding come from? Distinguish internally generated cash from borrowing and other capital-market funding, and consider how exposed future plans are to financing conditions.
- Is capacity being used and monetised? Look for evidence of utilisation and revenue rather than treating an announced buildout or market valuation as proof of infrastructure returns.
- How do asset lives compare with depreciation assumptions? Ask whether important hardware remains economically useful for the period over which its cost is being recovered.
- Can the project get power where and when it needs it? A global energy projection cannot answer a site-specific question about grid availability.
- Are the figures comparable? Keep forecasts separate from observed results, and check that figures refer to the same years, business scope and type of spending.
These checks make the uncertainty more concrete without pretending to settle it. The available evidence does not establish a comprehensive realised return for recent AI spending. Nor does the market-capitalisation increase attributed to AI-related companies establish that data-centre investment has earned an adequate return.
Does the spending prove that AI is a bubble or that competition is being harmed?
No. Large spending and rapidly rising valuations can prompt those questions, but the evidence cited here does not show that companies are certain to lose money, that the investment cycle is a bubble, or that concentration has already caused a specified consumer harm. Those conclusions would require evidence beyond spending forecasts, electricity projections and market-capitalisation figures.
Best Value
Market structure is still a reasonable issue to examine because this buildout depends on large-scale infrastructure and limited suppliers. But the material available here does not establish a causal effect on competition, entry or consumer prices. Treat those as open questions, not settled outcomes, and separate them from the financial and infrastructure risks that can be identified directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 415 TWh figure measure electricity used by AI?
No. The IEA’s 2025 estimate refers to data centres as a whole, not AI workloads alone. It should not be used as a precise measure of electricity attributable to AI.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can stock-market gains show whether AI data centres are profitable?
No. A company’s market value reflects investor expectations about future prospects as well as other factors; it is not an accounting of revenue or returns from data-centre assets. To assess infrastructure performance, look for operating and financial results tied to that investment.
Why might data-centre electricity use rise even if AI demand is uncertain?
The IEA’s projections cover total data-centre electricity consumption, not only AI, and describe an outlook rather than a guaranteed outcome. Actual use will depend on what facilities are built, how intensively they operate and how demand develops.
