Runpod is the best starting point for most startups that need self-serve GPUs without a long commitment. Its 2026 list prices include one-GPU Pods, Serverless workers and multi-node Clusters, with H100 PCIe at $2.89 per hour, H100 SXM at $3.99, H200 at $5.29 and A100 at $1.79. Choose Crusoe when you want a neocloud provider with a published rate card and single-GPU access; Vast.ai when the lowest marketplace price matters more than uniform infrastructure; and Google Cloud, AWS or Azure when GPUs must integrate with an existing enterprise cloud estate. Lambda, Modal and Nebius can fit more specific requirements. The right choice depends less on the headline GPU-hour than on minimum GPU count, form factor, storage, networking, interruption policy, support and the cost of leaving an instance idle.
Which CoreWeave alternative should a startup choose first?
For a typical small team, shortlist Runpod, Crusoe and one hyperscaler, then test the same container and workload on each. Runpod is usually the fastest path to a single GPU; Crusoe offers a similar neocloud model with transparent prices; a hyperscaler is often the better operational choice when identity, private networking, managed databases, compliance or existing credits matter.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Provider | Best fit | Smallest practical starting point | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runpod | Self-serve development, fine-tuning, inference and mixed workloads | One-GPU Pod, Serverless worker or a cluster | Rates and capacity vary by GPU, region and billing mode |
| Crusoe | Published neocloud pricing and single-GPU access | One GPU on its rate card | Some newer capacity is contact-sales only |
| Vast.ai | Price-first experiments that can tolerate host variation | An individual marketplace listing | Hardware, reliability and interruption policy differ by host |
| Google Cloud, AWS or Azure | Teams already operating in a hyperscaler environment | A VM or managed service subject to quota | GPU cost is only one part of the bill and setup is more involved |
| Lambda | Dedicated research hardware and one-click clusters | Provider-specific instance or cluster | Current capacity and pricing need direct verification |
| Modal | Bursting inference that can scale to zero | A serverless function or worker | Cold starts and execution limits must match the model |
| Nebius | European regions and adjacent managed-cloud services | Provider-specific GPU resource | Current rates and regional capacity need verification |
These are role-based recommendations, not a universal ranking. GPU availability, quotas and prices change quickly, so confirm the live catalog and contract terms immediately before committing.
What should you compare before moving off CoreWeave?
Compare the complete deployment rather than a single GPU-hour. Two providers can quote the same accelerator at very different effective costs once minimum counts, CPU, RAM, storage, networking and idle time are included.

GPU and topology
- Record the exact accelerator and memory capacity. An H100 PCIe and an H100 SXM are not interchangeable for every workload.
- Check whether you can buy one GPU or must reserve a fixed-size node. A small fine-tuning job may need only one card, while distributed training needs a predictable multi-GPU fabric.
- Ask what interconnect is available between GPUs and between nodes. PCIe-only communication can be adequate for inference but limit scaling efficiency for tightly coupled training.
Commercial terms
- Separate on-demand, reserved or committed, Spot and serverless billing. Each changes both price and failure behavior.
- Identify whether billing continues while a machine is stopped, while storage remains attached or while an IP address is reserved.
- Price data egress and cross-region traffic. Moving checkpoints or a large dataset can outweigh a small difference in GPU rate.
Operations and governance
- Check quota approval time, region availability, support hours and any service-level agreement.
- Verify IAM integration, private networking, audit logs, encryption controls and data-residency options if the workload handles customer data.
- Confirm support for your orchestration layer: Kubernetes, Slurm, Ray, a provider API or serverless deployment.
Is Runpod the best default for a small AI team?
Runpod is the strongest default when a team wants to launch a container on one or a few GPUs without negotiating a large commitment. Its pricing page separates Pods for dedicated GPU instances, Serverless for API inference and Clusters for multi-node jobs, so you can choose a billing model that matches the workload.
Runpod prices listed for 2026
| GPU or service unit | Listed price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| H100 PCIe Pod | $2.89 per hour | Provider list price; verify the live catalog, region and billing mode |
| H100 SXM Pod | $3.99 per hour | Different form factor from PCIe and not an apples-to-apples substitute |
| H200 Pod | $5.29 per hour | Provider list price; availability can vary |
| A100 Pod | $1.79 per hour | Provider list price; confirm memory variant and region |
Runpod says its Pods span more than 30 regions. That breadth can help with latency and capacity, but it also makes region-specific verification essential. The quoted figures are volatile list prices, not a promise that every region has the same rate or immediate capacity.
When Runpod works well
- Interactive development: a developer can start a single GPU, attach persistent storage and iterate without ordering a full node.
- Fine-tuning: checkpoint frequently, select the memory size your model actually requires and stop the Pod between runs.
- Inference: use a long-running Pod for steady traffic or Serverless when requests are intermittent and scale-to-zero savings exceed cold-start costs.
- Distributed jobs: use Clusters only after measuring the network and synchronization behavior of your training code.
Runpod checks before production
- Choose the exact GPU, memory, region and storage type in the live catalog.
- Run your production container and a representative batch, not just a synthetic CUDA test.
- Measure startup time, request throughput, checkpoint upload time and recovery after a forced restart.
- Calculate the cost of the GPU, vCPU, RAM, storage, egress and time spent idle.
- Set automatic shutdown or scale-down rules so an abandoned development instance does not run overnight.
When is Crusoe a better choice than Runpod?
Crusoe is a good fit when you want a neocloud experience, a transparent rate card and single-GPU options, but prefer a different capacity and support model. Its published figures make early budgeting straightforward, although the rate card is still subject to availability and may not cover every newer accelerator.
| GPU | Crusoe listed price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| H100 | $4.50 per GPU-hour | 2026 provider rate card |
| H200 | $5.40 per GPU-hour | 2026 provider rate card |
| B200 | $8.50 per GPU-hour | 2026 provider rate card |
| A100 PCIe | $2.00 per GPU-hour | Form factor specified by provider |
| A100 SXM | $2.30 per GPU-hour | Form factor specified by provider |
| L40S | $1.50 per GPU-hour | 2026 provider rate card |
Some newer Crusoe capacity is contact-sales only. Ask for the minimum GPU count, CPU-to-GPU ratio, local storage, network design, region and support terms in writing. The lower or higher GPU rate is not enough to predict training cost if a job spends much of its time waiting for data or communicating between nodes.
Choose Crusoe when these conditions apply
- You need one GPU rather than an eight-GPU node.
- You want a published price to build an initial budget before requesting a capacity quote.
- You can run a provider-specific benchmark and are willing to validate regional availability.
- You value a neocloud workflow but do not need all the managed services of a hyperscaler.
Is Vast.ai safe and reliable enough for a startup?
Vast.ai can be an excellent price-first laboratory, but it is a marketplace rather than a uniform fleet. Each listing represents a particular host, so reliability, storage behavior, network path and interruption risk must be evaluated per instance.
What the live marketplace means for pricing
Vast.ai says offers update hourly and that cost depends on the GPU model, supply, demand and whether an instance is interruptible. Examples shown in 2026 included an H100 SXM at $1.73 per hour, an H200 at $2.76 per hour and an A100 SXM4 at $0.40 per hour. These are live-market examples, not guaranteed quotes or a forecast of what your region will cost tomorrow.

Marketplace due diligence checklist
- Inspect host reputation, completed rentals, location and the advertised network path.
- Check whether the listing is interruptible and what notice or recovery behavior to expect.
- Verify GPU memory, driver and CUDA compatibility inside the actual instance.
- Test disk persistence by stopping and restarting the instance; do not assume an attached volume survives host replacement.
- Keep source data encrypted and avoid placing irreplaceable secrets on an unverified host.
- Run a short failure test before committing a long training job.
Vast.ai is most defensible for experiments, hyperparameter sweeps and checkpointed jobs that can restart elsewhere. A production API with strict uptime or data-governance requirements should use a dedicated fleet or a hyperscaler unless your own controls compensate for marketplace variability.
Should a startup use Google Cloud, AWS or Azure instead?
Use a hyperscaler when the GPU must sit beside existing identity, private networking, object storage, databases, observability, compliance controls or enterprise procurement. The operational overhead is higher, but integrating the accelerator into the rest of your system can be cheaper and safer than stitching a separate GPU provider into production.
How hyperscaler pricing differs
Google documents that GPU cost is added to VM resource cost and varies by model, region and consumption model. Disks, machine memory, networking and VM configuration are separate cost components. AWS and Azure likewise require you to price the complete VM or managed service, storage and network path rather than treating the GPU figure as an all-in rate.
| Purchasing mode | Useful for | Risk or constraint |
|---|---|---|
| On-demand | Short experiments and capacity you cannot predict | Highest unit price and possible quota limits |
| Committed or reserved use | Stable, continuously utilized workloads | Financial commitment if demand falls |
| Spot | Checkpointed training, batch inference and interruptible jobs | Capacity can be reclaimed with little notice |
Google Cloud Spot figures and interruption behavior
Google Cloud examples for 2026 put a one-GPU H100 A3-high Spot VM at about $6.31 per hour and a one-GPU A100 80GB Spot VM at about $2.93 per hour. Those figures describe the cited VM examples, not a universal GPU rate; region, machine shape and other resources change the bill.
Recommended Free Tools
Google states that Spot VMs can be stopped or deleted with a 30-second notice. Treat that as a design requirement: write checkpoints frequently, keep them in durable storage, make workers restartable and ensure the job can reacquire capacity without manual intervention.
When the hyperscaler premium is worthwhile
- Your application already uses the provider’s IAM, private subnets, object storage or managed database.
- You need centralized audit, policy and security tooling for customer or regulated data.
- You can use startup credits or an existing procurement agreement.
- You need predictable integration with Kubernetes, data pipelines and monitoring more than the lowest raw GPU price.
What roles do Lambda, Modal and Nebius play?
These providers can be sensible alternatives, but the available evidence supports role-based shortlists rather than a fixed price ranking. Validate current capacity, regions, service limits and first-party pricing before choosing one for a committed deployment.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Lambda
Lambda is a candidate for dedicated research hardware and one-click clusters. It deserves a test when your team wants a research-oriented environment and multi-GPU setup without building the entire infrastructure layer yourself. Confirm whether the required GPU, region and cluster size are available when you need them.
Modal
Modal is a candidate for bursty inference that can scale to zero. It can be attractive when traffic is intermittent and the model can tolerate container startup time. Measure cold-start latency, model-load time, concurrency limits and the cost of keeping weights warm before moving a customer-facing endpoint.
Nebius
Nebius is a candidate when European regions and adjacent managed-cloud services matter. Check data locality, network routes, quota, accelerator availability and the maturity of the services your application depends on rather than assuming that a regional label alone solves compliance or latency requirements.
Can you rent one H100 instead of an eight-GPU CoreWeave node?
Often, yes. Runpod and Crusoe explicitly list single-GPU options, and Vast.ai lets you select an individual host listing. Hyperscalers can also expose one-GPU VM shapes, subject to quota and region. The important qualification is that a single PCIe card is not equivalent to an eight-GPU SXM node with high-bandwidth interconnect.
When one GPU is enough
- Serving a model whose weights and working set fit in the available VRAM.
- Running parameter-efficient fine-tuning, evaluation, embedding generation or batch inference.
- Developing and profiling before scaling to a distributed training job.
When a multi-GPU node is justified
- The model or optimizer state cannot fit on one card.
- Training speed depends on fast all-reduce or tensor parallelism.
- The job’s wall-clock target is more important than minimizing hourly spend.
Record VRAM, interconnect, CPU, RAM and local storage in the specification, then benchmark scaling efficiency. If two GPUs deliver only a small throughput gain because the workload is input-bound, paying for a larger node is wasteful.
How do you calculate the real cost of a GPU deployment?
Use a workload-hour model that includes every resource consumed while the job is running and every resource retained while it is stopped.

| Cost component | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| GPU | What exact model, form factor and hourly rate apply in the chosen region? |
| CPU and RAM | Are they bundled, metered separately or oversized for the data pipeline? |
| Storage | Is it local ephemeral disk, network-attached volume or object storage, and what happens when the GPU stops? |
| Network | How much data enters, leaves or crosses regions, and is egress billed? |
| Orchestration | Does managed Kubernetes, a cluster control plane or a serverless platform add fees? |
| Idle time | How many hours are machines allocated without processing requests or training batches? |
| Failure recovery | How much duplicate compute is needed for retries, lost hosts or cold starts? |
A simple estimate is: (GPU rate + CPU/RAM rate + storage rate) × allocated hours + network and management charges. Apply it separately to development, training and production because their utilization patterns differ. A cheaper accelerator with 30% utilization can cost more per completed job than a dearer one running at 90%.
How should you run a fair provider evaluation?
Use the same software and workload on at least two providers before signing a commitment. The goal is to measure delivered work, not to collect another list of advertised specifications.
- Define the requirement. Record model name, VRAM, PCIe or SXM form factor, region, minimum GPU count, storage capacity and expected utilization.
- Freeze the software. Build one container with pinned drivers, framework versions, tokenizer files and startup scripts.
- Use representative data. Include the longest prompts, largest batches, normal sequence lengths and realistic preprocessing.
- Measure throughput. Capture tokens per second, samples per second, queue time, startup time, GPU utilization and peak memory.
- Measure recovery. Stop a worker, revoke a host or simulate a preemption; record checkpoint loss, restart time and whether state survives.
- Measure data movement. Time dataset staging and checkpoint uploads, and record bytes transferred across regions or providers.
- Calculate completed-work cost. Divide the full bill, including idle and failed attempts, by completed training steps or served requests.
- Recheck capacity. Repeat the availability and quota check immediately before purchase because both capacity and rates are volatile.
How can you make a production deployment reliable?
Reliability comes from architecture and operating practice, not from the GPU brand alone. Design for replacement before choosing a provider.
Checkpoint and restart
- Write checkpoints to durable object or network storage at a frequency that limits acceptable lost work.
- Keep a small manifest of the latest valid checkpoint and verify it after every upload.
- Make startup idempotent: a new worker should install dependencies, mount data and resume without hand edits.
Capacity and observability
- Request quota in more than one region or maintain a fallback provider for urgent jobs.
- Alert on GPU memory errors, driver resets, queue age, cold-start latency and unexpected allocation time.
- Track cost by project, model and environment so an idle development Pod cannot hide inside a shared bill.
Security and data handling
- Use short-lived credentials and least-privilege access to datasets and registries.
- Encrypt data in transit and at rest, and confirm where persistent volumes and backups physically reside.
- Do not copy production secrets into marketplace instances or temporary benchmark hosts.
Which option is best for bursty inference?
Choose a serverless option when requests arrive in bursts, the model can load quickly enough and the platform truly scales to zero. Choose a persistent Pod or VM when traffic is steady or model-load latency would damage the user experience.
| Traffic pattern | Likely starting point | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional internal requests | Serverless worker or an interruptible VM | Cold start, scale-up time and per-request cost |
| Predictable daytime traffic | Persistent single-GPU Pod or VM | Utilization, queue latency and idle hours |
| Unpredictable public traffic | Warm baseline plus burst capacity | Autoscaling delay, quota and failure fallback |
| Large offline batches | Spot or marketplace instances with checkpoints | Completed jobs after interruptions and retry cost |
For a serverless design, package weights close to the execution environment, keep initialization deterministic and set concurrency deliberately. For a persistent design, automate shutdown and scaling so a quiet endpoint does not consume a full GPU indefinitely.
What are the most common migration mistakes?
- Comparing unlike GPUs: an H100 PCIe price is not a direct substitute for an H100 SXM node. Match memory, interconnect and workload before comparing rates.
- Ignoring minimum counts: a provider may advertise a per-GPU figure while selling only a fixed multi-GPU shape for the region you need.
- Forgetting non-GPU charges: CPU, RAM, disks, object storage, egress and control-plane fees can dominate a lightly utilized workload.
- Assuming persistence: marketplace and Spot instances can disappear. Test volume behavior and keep a durable copy of checkpoints.
- Choosing on price alone: a host that is 20% cheaper but takes twice as long to start or fails during training is not cheaper per completed job.
- Skipping quota work: request limits before the launch date and maintain a second region or provider if the deadline is fixed.
- Moving data repeatedly: stage immutable datasets near the compute and avoid unnecessary cross-region transfers.
What is the practical shortlist for 2026?
Start with three tests rather than one permanent winner. Runpod is the broadest self-serve first test; Crusoe is the clearest neocloud comparison; and a hyperscaler is the control case for integration, governance and enterprise operations. Add Vast.ai when experimentation can tolerate host variability, or add Lambda, Modal or Nebius when their specific operating model matches the workload.
Best Value
Do not finalize procurement from the headline rate. Confirm the exact GPU and form factor, minimum count, region, quota, storage, egress, interruption behavior, support and total idle cost immediately before purchase. The provider that completes your representative job reliably at the lowest full-stack cost is the real alternative to CoreWeave for your team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do GPU providers bill me while a machine is stopped?
It depends on the service and what remains allocated. A stopped VM may release compute while attached disks, snapshots, reserved IPs or persistent volumes continue to incur charges, so check the provider’s billing definition for each resource before using stop/start as a cost-control strategy.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Estimate the size and frequency of dataset staging, checkpoint uploads, API responses and cross-region replication in gigabytes per month. Then price both the provider’s egress and any destination-side transfer, because moving a large model or dataset repeatedly can erase a GPU-rate saving.
Can startup credits be applied to these alternatives?
Credits are provider- and program-specific and may exclude marketplace hosts, certain GPU families or network charges. Ask for the eligible services, expiration date and whether credits cover committed-use purchases before treating them as part of your long-term budget.
What should I keep portable when switching GPU clouds?
Keep the container image, infrastructure definitions, dataset manifests, checkpoint format and launch scripts provider-neutral. Abstract object storage and secrets behind configuration so a worker can move regions or providers without changing model code.
