Reviewed case facts are matter-specific facts and findings that lawyers have checked against the underlying documents and accounts, while preserving qualifications, contradictions, and a record of review. They matter because AI-generated analysis is only as dependable as the factual material it works from—and because a carefully reviewed factual record is not a substitute for checking the law itself.
What does “reviewed case facts” mean?
“Reviewed case facts” is a practical description, not a formal legal doctrine or a settled industry standard. It refers to information about a particular matter that a legal team has examined against its source material, rather than simply accepting an AI-generated summary or a statement copied into a prompt.

A useful record does more than state a conclusion. It lets a reviewer see what document or account supports a point, whether the point is established or contested, what qualifications apply, and what the team has done to review it. The purpose is not to turn every item into an unquestionable “fact”; it is to make the basis and status of each finding understandable.
What belongs in a useful factual record?
- The finding: the factual proposition relevant to the matter, expressed with appropriate limits.
- Its source: the document, account, or other material from which the proposition was drawn, so the team can return to the underlying evidence.
- Its status: whether the point is confirmed, qualified, disputed, or still unresolved. Conflicting accounts should not be collapsed into a single unqualified narrative.
- Review context: who checked the material and what confirmation or change was made, where the workflow records that information.
This is an organizing approach, not a prescribed legal form. A source may support one part of a statement while leaving another part uncertain; preserving that distinction is more useful than presenting a polished but overconfident summary.

Why does review matter when legal AI summarizes a case?
AI can help organize matter materials, but an output that sounds certain is not proof that its underlying factual claims are complete or accurate. Review matters because it reconnects a summary to source documents and keeps uncertainty visible for the people responsible for the work.
For example, if two accounts conflict, a record that retains both accounts and the documents relevant to each gives a lawyer something to assess. A record that silently chooses one account can make a disputed point appear settled. Likewise, an omission matters: if a relevant gap is visible, the team can decide what it means; if a summary hides the gap, later readers may mistake an incomplete record for a complete one.

Review also makes later work more legible. A lawyer encountering a finding should be able to tell whether it was checked against a source, whether it carried a qualification, and whether new material prompted a change. This does not guarantee a correct conclusion or eliminate professional judgment. It gives that judgment a more traceable factual foundation.
How can a team build and maintain reviewed case facts?
A disciplined workflow separates collecting material, recording what it supports, resolving or preserving conflicts, and confirming the resulting record. The steps below describe a practical method; they are not a legal requirement or a claim that every software product supports every step.

- Gather the matter documents and accounts. Keep the source material available for review. A summary without a way to identify the material it summarizes is difficult to check.
- Record propositions rather than just narrative. Break a broad account into specific factual points. This makes it easier to distinguish what a source actually supports from what is an inference or an assumption.
- Connect each point to its supporting material. Preserve enough context to let a reviewer locate and examine the source, rather than relying only on a paraphrase.
- Mark qualifications, conflicts, and gaps. If accounts differ, note the difference. If a document supports only part of a proposition, narrow the proposition or state the limitation rather than smoothing it away.
- Have a lawyer confirm the finding and its wording. The review should address both whether the source has been checked and whether the recorded statement fairly represents it.
- Retain review history and update deliberately. When new documents affect an existing finding, make the change visible so later users can understand what changed and why, where the system supports that history.
The key decision is not whether a system can produce a concise account. It is whether the workflow lets a lawyer inspect the factual basis, notice what remains unresolved, and understand how the matter record developed.
How are reviewed facts different from AI legal research?
Reviewed matter facts and legal authorities answer different questions. The first concerns what the evidence in a particular matter supports; the second concerns what statutes, cases, and other legal sources say. Checking one does not verify the other.

A matter record may help an AI system or a lawyer work from the evidence and the team’s prior work. But a case citation, quotation, statutory reference, or statement of law still needs to be checked against the genuine legal source. An accurate factual foundation cannot make a fabricated citation real, or establish that a case stands for a proposition attributed to it.
This distinction is illustrated by In re: Sanctions Order of Kenney, Kerry, decided by the Louisiana Court of Appeal, Fifth Circuit, on October 23, 2025. The opinion concerned pleadings containing fabricated case citations, a fabricated case summary, misrepresented holdings, and an altered quotation. The court recounted counsel’s reliance on AI-generated summaries and found the inquiry into cited law objectively unreasonable; it affirmed sanctions under Louisiana Code of Civil Procedure article 863.

The court’s practical warning was direct: “Reviewing AI-generated case summaries is not the same as reading legal cases.” It also stated: “The lawyer’s obligation under Article 863 is crystal clear: read the law you cite. Read the Code. Read the statutes. Read the cases.” Those remarks concern the lawyer’s obligations under the Louisiana rule and the record before that court. They should not be presented as a ruling about every jurisdiction, every legal AI product, or a reviewed-fact workflow. The narrower lesson is that generated legal summaries are not a replacement for the source law.
What does a current legal AI workflow example show?
On October 21, 2026, Mary Technology announced a connector with Harvey. In its announcement, Mary said its software reads and maps uploaded matter documents before the first question, carries accumulated findings and review into Harvey, and can record lawyer confirmations, qualifications, conflicting accounts, and audit history. The company also described suggested updates when new documents affect existing work.
These are company descriptions of product capabilities, not independent findings that the tools achieve a particular level of accuracy, save a measured amount of time, or improve case outcomes. They illustrate the workflow idea: make prior matter work and the factual basis available within a legal AI workflow, instead of treating each new prompt as if no reviewed record existed. They do not establish that the record will be complete or that an AI-generated answer should be accepted without checking.
Mary’s announcement reported use by more than 4,000 lawyers across more than 150 firms. That is company-reported adoption context as of the announcement, not a performance statistic. The available evidence does not establish an independent published figure for improved accuracy, efficiency, or litigation outcomes from reviewed-fact systems.

What should lawyers evaluate before relying on a reviewed-fact feature?
Evaluate the workflow’s traceability and handling of uncertainty, not merely whether it produces a fluent summary. The relevant questions are whether a lawyer can connect a finding to the matter material, see how it was qualified or contested, and follow the review history.
- Source-document traceability: Can the user identify and inspect the underlying material for a factual point?
- Contradictions and missing information: Does the workflow preserve opposing accounts and gaps, or does it present a simplified narrative?
- Lawyer confirmation: Can a reviewer confirm or qualify a finding rather than treating an AI-generated statement as already verified?
- Review and audit history: Is it possible to understand what was reviewed and how the record changed?
- Fit with existing work: Can the team access its accumulated matter findings in the workflow where it drafts, researches, or develops its case?
These are evaluation dimensions, not a product ranking. Mary’s announcement describes capabilities in these areas, but the cited material does not provide an independent comparison with other systems. A feature description should therefore be treated as a statement about what the vendor says it offers—not as proof of superior accuracy or results.

A reviewed factual record can help a team keep evidence, qualifications, conflicts, and prior review connected. It can make it easier to see why a factual statement appears in an analysis and what still needs attention. The value depends on the actual source material and the quality of the human review.
It cannot by itself decide which disputed account a court will accept, guarantee that every relevant document was collected, or validate a legal citation. Nor does the phrase “reviewed case facts” mean a court has endorsed a new legal doctrine. The strongest use of the concept is modest and practical: make the factual foundation inspectable, preserve uncertainty honestly, and keep legal verification as a separate task.
