Earnings guidance is a forecast, bookings are new customer commitments, and backlog is contracted work that has not yet been delivered or recognized as revenue. They answer different questions about an AI company. Guidance describes what management expects to happen; bookings show the value of orders signed during a period; backlog (often reported as remaining performance obligations, or RPO) shows work already under contract that should be recognized in future periods.
These measures are useful only when you read the definitions, cancellation terms, contract lengths, and expected recognition timing. A large backlog can convert slowly, bookings can include commitments that are cancellable or usage-based, and guidance can miss if the assumptions behind it change.

What is earnings guidance?
Earnings guidance is management’s forward-looking estimate of future financial performance. It can cover revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, earnings, tax rates, cash flow, or other key performance indicators. Guidance is an expectation, not an order, an accounting balance, or historical revenue.
For example, NVIDIA’s fiscal 2027 first-quarter outlook called for revenue of $78.0 billion, plus or minus 2%. The outlook also specified expected GAAP and non-GAAP gross-margin and operating-expense ranges. Those figures describe what management expected for a future quarter; they do not represent customer orders already signed or revenue already earned.

Guidance is normally presented for a defined period, such as the next quarter or fiscal year. The period, currency, accounting basis, and whether the figures are GAAP or non-GAAP are part of the information investors need to interpret it. A forecast can be revised, withdrawn, or missed when demand, pricing, supply, costs, foreign exchange, regulation, or other assumptions change.
Why can guidance differ from later results?
Microsoft cautions in its filings that forward-looking statements rely on current assumptions and risks, and that actual results can differ materially. That warning applies broadly: guidance is a management view at a point in time, not a contractual promise. Compare the original outlook with the eventual result and read the assumptions and risk factors rather than treating the midpoint as a guaranteed outcome.
How is guidance different from historical revenue?
NVIDIA reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $215.938 billion, up from $130.497 billion in fiscal 2025, a 65% increase. Those are completed-period results. Its $78.0 billion outlook was a forward estimate for a later quarter. Mixing a forecast with a reported result creates a misleading growth calculation.
What are bookings at an AI company?
Bookings are the value of customer orders or contracts signed during a reporting period. They measure new commitments entering the business, so they can provide an early signal of potential future revenue. A signed contract may be delivered and recognized over several future periods rather than in the quarter in which it is booked.
There is no single AI-industry definition of bookings. One company might count the total contract value, another might count purchase orders, and another might include only noncancelable commitments. Policies may differ on renewals, cancellable amounts, usage-based business, channel sales, or acquired contracts. The company’s own definition and any reconciliation to reported results take priority over the label.
What should you check in a bookings definition?
- Commitment type: Determine whether the metric includes signed master agreements, purchase orders, or only enforceable, noncancelable commitments.
- Renewals: Check whether extensions and automatically renewing contracts are counted as new bookings.
- Cancellations: Identify whether a customer can reduce or terminate the order without a significant penalty.
- Usage and consumption: Some AI services depend on future usage rather than a fixed purchase. Find out whether estimated or committed consumption is included.
- Channel activity: Ask whether distributor or reseller inventory is counted when the company sells through a channel.
- Period and currency: Confirm whether bookings are quarterly, annual, or lifetime contract value and whether acquisitions are included.
Because definitions vary, bookings from two AI companies should not be compared as if they were standardized accounting figures. A rising bookings number can be encouraging, but its quality depends on how firm the commitments are and how quickly they are expected to become billings and revenue.

What does backlog mean for an AI company?
Backlog is the value of accepted orders or contracted work that remains to be delivered. Software and cloud AI companies frequently use the accounting term remaining performance obligations (RPO) instead of the looser word backlog. RPO is tied to revenue-accounting obligations and generally excludes amounts that a customer can cancel.
Microsoft defines commercial RPO as the commercial portion of revenue allocated to remaining performance obligations, including unearned revenue and amounts that will be invoiced and recognized in future periods. Palantir describes revenue allocated to RPO as noncancelable contracted revenue that has not yet been recognized, including deferred revenue and, in some cases, amounts that will be invoiced.
Why is RPO narrower than a sales backlog?
A sales team may call the total value of signed or anticipated work its backlog, even when some contracts are cancellable or depend on future usage. RPO is narrower because it represents obligations that meet accounting requirements. Palantir states that cancelable contracted revenue, including customer deposits, is not considered an RPO. Contract termination rights therefore affect whether a balance belongs in RPO and whether two companies’ figures are comparable.
What does an RPO balance contain?
An RPO balance can contain revenue already invoiced but not yet earned, as well as amounts that will be invoiced and recognized in future periods. It is therefore not identical to deferred revenue, which generally refers to amounts billed or collected before recognition. The exact mix depends on the company’s contracts and disclosures.

No. Backlog or RPO is a stock of contracted work still to be performed, while revenue is recognized as the company satisfies its performance obligations. A contract can remain in backlog for months or years, and only the portion delivered during a reporting period appears in that period’s revenue.
| Measure | What it describes | When it is measured | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earnings guidance | Management’s expected future revenue, margins, expenses, earnings, or other metrics | Before the period occurs | Forward-looking and dependent on assumptions; actual results can differ materially |
| Bookings | New customer orders or contracts signed | During a reporting period | Definition is company-specific and may include or exclude cancellable, renewal, usage-based, or channel amounts |
| Backlog | Accepted orders or contracted work not yet delivered | At a point in time | May be a broad operating term; cancellation rights determine how much is enforceable |
| Remaining performance obligations (RPO) | Revenue allocated to accounting performance obligations not yet recognized | At a point in time | Generally excludes cancellable amounts and can include future invoices as well as unearned revenue |
| Revenue | Amounts recognized as obligations are satisfied | For the reporting period | Historical accounting result, not a promise of future performance |
The difference matters when an AI company signs a multi-year contract. The booking may be recorded when the contract is signed, the RPO may remain on the balance until delivery, and revenue may be recognized ratably or according to usage over the contract term.

How do bookings, backlog, RPO, revenue, and guidance connect?
Think of the measures as different points in a commercial and accounting sequence, not interchangeable versions of the same number.
- Customer commitment: A customer signs an order or contract. The company may count its value as bookings under its stated operating definition.
- Contracted pipeline: The undelivered portion accumulates as backlog or, when it meets accounting criteria, RPO.
- Delivery and performance: The company provides software, cloud capacity, hardware, implementation, or another promised service.
- Revenue recognition: Revenue is recorded as each performance obligation is satisfied. A one-year subscription may be recognized over the year rather than at signing.
- Forecasting: Management uses orders, delivery capacity, pricing, costs, and other assumptions when preparing earnings guidance.
The sequence is not perfectly linear. A company can book a contract that is later modified, delay delivery, or recognize revenue from earlier bookings. That is why the definitions, contract terms, and reconciliation in each filing matter more than a headline label.

Conversion speed depends on contract duration, invoicing terms, delivery milestones, usage, and termination rights. A large balance with most recognition scheduled several years out may support long-term visibility but contribute less to next quarter’s revenue than a smaller balance scheduled for near-term delivery.
Microsoft’s disclosed RPO timing
As of June 30, 2025, Microsoft reported $375 billion of revenue allocated to remaining performance obligations, of which $368 billion was commercial. Microsoft expected about 40% of total-company RPO revenue to be recognized over the following 12 months. The remainder was scheduled for later periods, so the headline balance should not be read as one year’s revenue.
Palantir’s disclosed RPO timing
Palantir reported $4.1 billion of RPO as of December 31, 2025. It expected approximately 38% to be recognized over the next 12 months and approximately 36% over the subsequent 13 to 36 months. Palantir said its customer contracts are generally one to five years and that revenue is generally recognized ratably over the contract term.
These percentages illustrate why a conversion schedule is essential. Two companies can report similar balances but have very different near-term revenue profiles if one recognizes most obligations within a year and the other spreads them across several years.

How should you compare earnings guidance, bookings, and backlog between AI companies?
Use a consistent checklist before drawing a growth or valuation conclusion.
1. Align the time period
Compare quarterly guidance with the same quarter’s historical result, and compare period-end RPO with period-end RPO. Do not compare a full contract’s bookings value with one quarter of revenue without accounting for the recognition schedule.
2. Read the company’s definitions
Look for the footnote or management reconciliation that explains what counts as bookings or backlog. Record whether the metric includes renewals, cancellable orders, estimated consumption, acquisitions, or channel inventory. If a comparable value is not defined, mark it as not stated rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
3. Test contract quality
Review enforceability, cancellation and termination rights, renewal assumptions, payment terms, and customer concentration. A noncancelable, funded contract has a different risk profile from an agreement that can be reduced or terminated before delivery.
4. Examine recognition windows
Find the percentage expected within 12 months and the amount scheduled for later periods. Also check whether revenue is recognized ratably, at delivery, at milestones, or as usage occurs.
5. Separate operating measures from accounting measures
Guidance and bookings are management or operating measures. RPO is connected to revenue-accounting obligations, while revenue is a reported historical result. None of these measures alone guarantees future profit, cash collection, or margin.
Best Value
6. Compare like with like
Use the same currency, fiscal-year convention, contract-value basis, and inclusion rules. A company that reports total contract value will appear to have more bookings than one that reports only the first year’s committed billings, even if their underlying sales are similar.
What are the most common mistakes when reading AI-company metrics?
- Treating guidance as a promise: A forecast can change when assumptions change; the midpoint is not guaranteed revenue.
- Calling bookings revenue: A booking signals a commitment, but delivery and recognition may occur over several periods.
- Assuming all backlog is firm: Cancellable contracts and usage-dependent amounts may not qualify as RPO.
- Ignoring contract duration: A five-year obligation is not equivalent to a one-year obligation for near-term growth.
- Comparing labels instead of definitions: “Bookings” and “backlog” are not standardized across AI companies.
- Overlooking future invoices: RPO can include amounts not yet invoiced, so it is not the same as billed or collected cash.
- Using a balance as a period result: RPO is measured at a point in time; revenue is recognized over a reporting period.
What should an investor write down from each filing?
A compact comparison worksheet prevents the most common errors. For each company, record:
- The exact definition of guidance, bookings, backlog, or RPO.
- The reporting date and fiscal period.
- Whether figures are GAAP, non-GAAP, or an operating measure.
- Cancellation, termination, renewal, and usage provisions.
- The share expected to convert within 12 months and in later periods.
- The recognition pattern and typical contract term.
- Any reconciliation to revenue, billings, deferred revenue, or other reported figures.
With those fields completed, you can distinguish a forecast from a commitment, a commitment from an enforceable accounting obligation, and an obligation from revenue already recognized.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI company report bookings but no backlog figure?
Yes. Bookings can be presented as a period activity measure while the company chooses not to disclose a backlog or RPO balance. In that case, the filing may still describe contract duration or future revenue, but the absence of a balance means you cannot infer one reliably from bookings alone.
Why might RPO decline even when an AI company’s sales are growing?
RPO is a point-in-time balance. Delivery and revenue recognition reduce it, while new contracts increase it, so a company can recognize a large amount of prior obligations faster than it adds new ones during a period.
Do multi-year AI contracts make revenue more predictable?
They can improve visibility when obligations are enforceable and cancellation rights are limited, but the timing still depends on delivery and the recognition pattern. A long contract does not guarantee that every dollar will be recognized evenly or that margins will remain unchanged.
Where can I find the cancellation terms behind an RPO number?
Start with the revenue-recognition and customer-contract footnotes in the annual or quarterly filing, then read the discussion of remaining performance obligations. Those sections usually explain which cancellable amounts are excluded and whether future invoices are included.
