Solid-state transformers (SSTs) are an emerging way to feed power-hungry AI data centers. Instead of using only a conventional, line-frequency transformer and several downstream conversion stages, an SST uses semiconductor switching, filtering and a high-frequency transformer to convert medium-voltage (MV) grid AC into tightly controlled outputs such as 800 VDC. That architecture could reduce conversion steps, copper, floor space and installation work for dense, rapidly changing loads. It is not yet a proven, universal replacement: the named AI-data-center projects announced in 2026 remain in development, module assembly or validation, and no independent cross-vendor field comparison establishes typical savings or reliability in operating AI facilities.
What is a solid-state transformer?
An SST is a power-electronic transformer that changes voltage while also controlling the electrical waveform and direction of power flow. Semiconductor switches first convert incoming AC into a high-frequency waveform, a smaller medium-frequency transformer provides isolation and voltage conversion, and additional power electronics produce the required AC or DC output. Depending on its topology, an SST can perform AC-to-DC, DC-to-AC or AC-to-AC conversion rather than simply stepping voltage up or down.

It is efficient and durable, but its voltage ratio is fixed unless separate equipment is added. An SST can regulate voltage electronically, react to disturbances, mitigate harmonics and support bidirectional flow when those functions are included in the design. They are not automatic features of every product; topology, controls and protection determine what an individual system can do.
The high-frequency transformer is physically smaller than a 50- or 60-hertz transformer of comparable power. That size advantage comes with more active components, software-controlled switching and thermal-management requirements. The result is a controllable power-conversion platform rather than a passive transformer alone.

Why would an AI data center use an SST?
AI servers create an unusually dense and dynamic electrical load. Accelerators can change demand quickly, racks require substantial direct-current power, and the facility may need to expand in repeatable blocks. SST proponents want to place major conversion at the medium-voltage service entrance and distribute higher-voltage DC—often 800 VDC or a bipolar ±400 VDC arrangement—closer to the facility or rack.
Conventional facilities commonly perform several conversions: medium-voltage AC to low-voltage AC, AC to a facility DC bus, and additional DC/DC conversion in power shelves and server boards. Every stage has switching losses, conductors, protection hardware and space requirements. Removing a stage can improve the end-to-end power path, but the benefit depends on the complete design and operating load, not on the SST nameplate alone.
- Fewer conversion interfaces: A direct MV-AC-to-high-voltage-DC architecture can avoid some intermediate low-voltage equipment.
- Higher-voltage distribution: For the same power, 800 VDC carries less current than a low-voltage bus, potentially reducing conductor size and resistive loss.
- Fast control: Power electronics can regulate voltage and respond to load changes faster than mechanical or passive equipment.
- Modular growth: Small converter modules can be paralleled into racks or systems sized for multi-megawatt blocks.
- Grid interaction: Bidirectional designs may support controlled import and export, storage integration or power-quality functions, subject to utility approval.
These are architectural objectives, not guaranteed site-level savings. Cooling, harmonic filters, protection, standby systems and downstream converters remain part of the facility, and an SST can add its own losses and maintenance needs.
How does an SST power path differ from a conventional data-center design?
In a conventional arrangement, the utility medium-voltage feeder enters switchgear, a line-frequency transformer produces low-voltage AC, uninterruptible-power-system equipment converts AC and DC, and power supplies create the voltages used by servers. Some facilities use a 400- or 480-volt AC distribution backbone with conversion close to the rack.
In the proposed SST arrangement, MV switchgear feeds a power-electronic transformer. The SST can deliver an 800 VDC bus or ±400 VDC, after which distribution equipment, rack power shelves and point-of-load converters create the lower voltages required by processors, memory and fans. The exact chain differs by vendor; a claim of “direct” conversion does not mean server chips receive 800 volts.
Siemens and Reinhausen describe a target system connecting grid voltage up to 36 kV to 800 VDC. Enphase describes a medium-voltage AC input and an 800 VDC/±400 VDC architecture. Both descriptions concern vendor development plans rather than a common, independently tested product specification.

Which SST systems are being developed for data centers?
Publicly described systems are at different development stages, so their ratings and benefits should not be treated as a league table.
| Developer or program | Architecture and stated scope | Status and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Siemens and Reinhausen | MV input up to 36 kV; 800 VDC output; modular SST aimed at AI data centers. | Joint announcement on 14 August 2026 says the system is under development and planned for industrialization. |
| Enphase IQ SST | 4 kW modules assembled into IQ SST racks with capacities up to 5 MW; validation range of 13.8 kV to 34.5 kV; 800 VDC/±400 VDC target architecture. | On 8 September 2026, Enphase said modules were being built in Texas for rack assembly and validation covering electrical, thermal, efficiency, controls, redundancy and partial discharge. |
| Eaton MVSST | Converts MV AC to low-voltage AC or DC; data centers are listed among target applications. | A U.S. Department of Energy presentation lists potential “up to” cost, footprint and installation reductions; those figures are not independent field results. |
| Delta modular SST platform | MV AC input, lower-voltage DC output and bidirectional-flow capability as described by Delta. | Platform details and benefits are vendor statements; a harmonized test report was not provided. |
| Amperesand | Company website states 98.5% MV-AC-to-LV-DC conversion efficiency. | The company says first commercial units are delivering in 2026. The efficiency and delivery status require vendor verification and are not independently benchmarked in the available evidence. |
| DOE and laboratory projects | DOE records an SST purchase for Savannah River National Laboratory’s bidirectional MV test bed. A prior project demonstrated a 500 kVA, 20 kV/4 kV single-phase modular hybrid SST. | These records establish research and test-bed activity, not deployment in an AI data center. |
Are SSTs already deployed broadly in AI data centers?
No broad operational deployment has been established. The Siemens-Reinhausen announcement describes development; Enphase’s September 2026 work describes module building and validation; and Enphase’s April 28, 2026 roadmap projected full-system demonstrations late in 2026, customer pilots in 2027 and volume shipments in 2028. Those dates are company expectations and can change.
The DOE laboratory activities demonstrate that medium-voltage SST hardware is being procured and tested. They do not show how an AI campus performs over years of load cycling, maintenance or utility events. A buyer should therefore classify SST projects as development, pilot or production only when a supplier provides dated commissioning records and operating data for the specific configuration.
What performance numbers can be quoted—and what do they mean?
Available figures have different boundaries and sources. Combining them into a single efficiency or payback claim would be misleading.

| Figure | Source and qualification | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 46% lower solution cost | DOE Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation presentation, 2026, describing Eaton’s MVSST potential. | Keep “up to” and the application-specific context; it is not a measured average across data centers. |
| Up to 40% smaller footprint | Same DOE presentation and framing. | Ask which equipment boundary, power rating and cooling system were counted. |
| Up to 50% shorter installation cycle | Same DOE presentation and framing. | Confirm whether civil works, commissioning and utility interconnection are included. |
| 98.5% MV-AC-to-LV-DC efficiency | Amperesand company website, accessed in 2026; test conditions and independent verification were not supplied. | Request load point, input voltage, power factor, temperature, auxiliaries and measurement method. |
| 500 kVA at 20 kV/4 kV | DOE Office of Electricity, 2022, for a single-phase modular hybrid SST development. | Treat as a project rating, not an AI-data-center system specification. |
Efficiency must be compared at the same load, voltage, cooling method and system boundary. A module’s conversion figure can be substantially different from a complete rack or facility path that includes controls, fans, filters, switchgear and downstream converters.
How should an operator compare an SST proposal with conventional equipment?
Use a written test and integration specification before comparing prices. The following checkpoints expose differences that a headline efficiency number hides.

What adoption problems could delay SST projects?
Electronic-component reliability
Conventional transformers have few active parts and can operate for decades with established maintenance practices. SSTs add power semiconductors, gate drivers, capacitors, sensors, control boards and software. Those parts face thermal cycling, electrical stress and obsolescence. Suppliers need to show accelerated-life methods, field-failure data, module replacement time and a plan for keeping controls supportable.
Protection and safety at high-voltage DC
DC arcs do not naturally cross zero as AC arcs do, so interruption and isolation require equipment designed for the actual DC voltage and fault current. An 800 VDC bus also changes approach boundaries, arc-flash analysis, grounding and maintenance procedures. Protection coordination must cover semiconductor short circuits as well as downstream rack faults.

Connecting an electronically controlled converter to a 13.8 kV, 20 kV or 34.5 kV feeder requires utility studies for harmonics, fault contribution, ride-through and islanding behavior. Standards and certification requirements may vary by jurisdiction and by whether the SST is treated as transformer, converter, UPS equipment or a combination.
Control and cybersecurity
Fast digital controls are a benefit, but they create dependence on firmware, communications and configuration management. Operators should require secure update procedures, local fallback controls, event logging and clear ownership of settings between the utility, electrical contractor and data-center team.
Economics at partial load
AI campuses are not always fully occupied. A design that is efficient at rated load may have different losses at 20% or 30%, when modules are lightly loaded or redundant units remain energized. Modeling should use the expected hourly load profile and include standby and cooling consumption.
What would a credible SST pilot measure?
A pilot should test the complete operating envelope rather than demonstrate only a nameplate conversion. At minimum, operators should log input and output energy, voltage quality, harmonics, thermal conditions, module availability, transient response and protection events. Tests should include startup, shutdown, rapid accelerator-load changes, utility disturbances, generator transfer, loss of a module and restoration after a fault.

Results should identify measurement instruments, uncertainty, sampling rate, load composition and the exact equipment boundary. A pilot that reports only peak efficiency cannot establish annual savings or reliability. Equally, a successful laboratory demonstration does not prove that a multi-megawatt campus can be serviced without unacceptable downtime.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the practical outlook for SST-powered AI facilities?
SSTs are credible candidates for a future high-voltage-DC data-center architecture because they combine MV conversion, regulation and optional bidirectional control in modular equipment. The strongest near-term evidence is continued development: Siemens and Reinhausen’s 36 kV-to-800 VDC design, Enphase’s module and rack validation, vendor platforms from Eaton and Delta, and DOE-backed laboratory work.
The technology should be purchased on verified system data, not projected percentages or a single module efficiency. Until multi-year field results and common test methods exist, conventional transformers and established UPS/distribution chains remain the reference against which every SST proposal must prove reliability, safety, maintainability and total cost.
Frequently asked questions
Can an SST replace a data-center UPS?
Not by itself. An SST can regulate conversion and, in some designs, exchange power bidirectionally, but ride-through energy still requires batteries, flywheels, generators or another storage system. The supplier must define how the SST coordinates with the facility’s UPS and backup sources.

Does an 800 VDC bus connect directly to AI processors?
No. Server power shelves and point-of-load converters reduce the bus voltage to the levels required by processors, memory and auxiliary loads. The advantage is moving part of the conversion and distribution at a higher voltage, not eliminating every downstream converter.
What evidence should a utility request before approving an SST interconnection?
Request harmonic-current spectra, power-factor range, fault-current contribution, ride-through and islanding behavior, protection settings, grounding details and verified models for the proposed firmware version. These documents allow the utility to study disturbances rather than rely on a marketing efficiency claim.

Can an existing data center be retrofitted with an SST?
Possibly, but the project may require new MV switchgear, DC-rated protection, busways, cooling, grounding and rack power shelves. Space for safe maintenance and a planned outage often determines feasibility before the converter’s electrical rating does.
When will SST performance be comparable across vendors?
Comparison becomes meaningful when suppliers publish results at common input voltages, load points, temperatures and system boundaries, including auxiliaries and failure behavior. Until then, buyers should commission witnessed tests or independent measurement using a shared protocol.
