Neither Walmart Sparky nor Amazon Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus) has been shown to be the better assistant overall. Both are designed to help shoppers discover products, compare options and get recommendations inside a retailer’s shopping ecosystem. Amazon describes more features for personalization, price tracking, reordering and agentic shopping; Walmart highlights lists, personalized recommendations and occasion planning. Those published feature differences do not establish which assistant gives more accurate or useful answers. If you already shop at one store, start there; if a particular task matters, compare the same request in both and verify the details before buying.

What is the difference between Walmart Sparky and Amazon Alexa for Shopping?

Sparky is Walmart’s AI shopping assistant, integrated into Walmart’s shopping experience. Amazon’s assistant is now called Alexa for Shopping; Amazon says the name changed from Rufus on May 13, 2026. Because many shoppers and older articles still use “Rufus,” this comparison uses both names where useful.

The central difference is not a proven gap in answer quality. It is the set of shopping tasks each retailer has described for its assistant. Walmart’s current overview emphasizes finding and comparing products, building lists, personalized recommendations and planning occasions. Amazon’s current feature descriptions emphasize personalization from shopping activity, price-related tools, reordering and agentic shopping, alongside conversational product discovery and comparisons.

These are retailer-published feature descriptions, not independent test results. They can help you decide which assistant to try for a particular job, but they cannot tell you which one will be more accurate for your products, budget or location.

Amazon describes agentic shopping capabilities, but the materials cited here do not establish directly comparable purchase-control settings.

The table compares what the companies have described, not a side-by-side product test. A feature may also depend on market, platform or rollout, so check what appears in your own shopping app before relying on it.

How the assistants were introduced

Walmart announced Sparky in June 2025 as an assistant within the Walmart app. At launch, Walmart said it could search for items, synthesize reviews, answer product questions, compare options and help plan occasions. The company also described automatic reordering, service booking and text, image, audio and video inputs as planned capabilities at that time. Those launch-day plans should not be mistaken for confirmation that every capability is now available to every shopper. Walmart’s current technology overview specifically describes product discovery and comparisons, list building, personalized recommendations and occasion planning, and refers to voice and camera capabilities as emerging.

Walmart Senior Vice President of Tech Strategy and Emerging Tech Desiree Gosby described the broader direction in the June 6, 2025 announcement: “Sparky is more than a feature — it’s a foundation for what’s next.” That statement describes Walmart’s ambition for the product, rather than an independent assessment of its present performance.

Amazon introduced Rufus in 2024 as a conversational shopping assistant drawing on its product catalog, customer reviews, community questions and information from across the web. Its launch description included broad category research, shopping for a particular use, category comparisons, recommendations and product questions. Amazon’s later descriptions add capabilities such as shopping-activity personalization, price tracking, list digitization, reordering and agentic actions. The current name is Alexa for Shopping, but people looking for the feature may still encounter Rufus in older coverage or product references.

Which assistant is better for the shopping task I have?

Choose by the task you want to complete, rather than treating a longer feature list as proof of better results. The available information supports a task-based decision, not a universal ranking.

For finding and comparing products

Both assistants are positioned for product discovery, questions and comparisons. If you need a specific item, give either assistant the same requirements—such as use, size, budget and must-have features—then check that its suggestions actually meet them. A confident-sounding response is not a substitute for confirming specifications on the product listing or with the manufacturer.

Amazon’s 2024 description makes clear that Rufus was intended for more than searches that name an exact item: it also covered category research and shopping by use case. Walmart’s launch description similarly included searching, questions and comparisons, and its current overview continues to describe discovery and comparison. These descriptions suggest overlapping starting points, not identical recommendation results. For a task such as choosing equipment for a particular activity, make the activity, fit requirements, budget and deal-breakers explicit rather than asking only for the “best” item.

For reviews and product questions

Walmart says Sparky synthesizes reviews and product data. Amazon’s 2024 Rufus launch description named its catalog, reviews, community questions and information from across the web as inputs. That tells you what the companies say informs their assistants; it does not show how well either one summarizes conflicting reviews or handles an important limitation.

When a review summary could change your decision, inspect the underlying reviews and the product’s listed specifications. Look for whether the assistant distinguishes a recurring complaint from an isolated report, and whether it includes drawbacks as well as advantages. Treat omissions as a reason to investigate, not as evidence that a product has no downside.

For a product question, ask for the exact fact you need and check it against the relevant listing or manufacturer information. A broad answer may blur together product variants or omit a qualification. Verify model numbers, dimensions, compatibility, included accessories and other details that matter to your use. The assistant can narrow the options and point you toward questions to investigate; it should not be treated as the final authority on a material specification.

For lists and occasion planning

Walmart explicitly describes list building and occasion planning as Sparky uses. That may make it the more directly documented fit if you want help organizing a shopping list or planning what to buy for an event in Walmart’s ecosystem. Amazon describes list digitization and reordering, which are related but distinct tasks; it does not establish that the two services handle the same planning workflow.

For example, an occasion-planning request can include the event, the number of people, a budget and any constraints. You can then evaluate whether the suggestions form a useful plan and whether the resulting list contains what you actually need. A list-building feature is not by itself evidence that the assistant has accounted for every dietary, timing or availability constraint, so review the items before you act on the list.

For reordering and recurring needs

Amazon’s feature descriptions explicitly include reordering. Walmart mentioned automatic reordering among the capabilities it planned at Sparky’s June 2025 launch, but that announcement alone does not establish that automatic reordering is a current, generally available Sparky feature. If recurring purchases matter to you, check the controls and options currently presented in your account rather than relying on a launch announcement.

Reordering can save effort, but it is still worth confirming that the item, variant and quantity are right. A changed package, size or need can make a repeat order a poor fit. Treat any assistant-supported reorder as a convenience to review, not as a reason to skip checking what is being added or purchased.

For price context

Amazon documents price-history views and price tracking, which can help shoppers evaluate an item’s price over time in supported markets. That is a difference in described tools, not evidence that Amazon’s listed prices are lower than Walmart’s. A price history also cannot tell you whether a product is the right choice or whether another retailer’s current offer is better.

Amazon says the price-history feature offers 30-, 90- and 365-day views in supported markets. Its June 2026 update reported more than 50 million users of that feature. Availability varies by country and rollout, so first confirm whether the history view is offered to you. When comparing a price, make sure you are looking at the same product and variant; a historical price chart for one model does not settle whether another model or current offer is a better fit.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

The Walmart feature descriptions discussed here do not establish a comparable Sparky price-history or price-alert tool. That is a limit on what is documented, not proof that Walmart never displays other price information elsewhere in its shopping experience.

For purchases involving agent actions

Amazon describes agentic shopping capabilities. Walmart’s October 21, 2026 announcement described customer-configured approval requirements or spending limits for dedicated third-party agent profiles planned for the following month. These descriptions are not enough to conclude that the assistants offer identical actions or controls; review the settings and terms presented in the service you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Walmart said purchases must be approved by default, and that agents would not be able to access payment-card information or change payment methods. These statements applied to the announced third-party agent profiles and should not be generalized into a claim about every possible Walmart shopping flow. The planned timing also matters: a feature described as coming the next month should not be assumed to be active in every account today.

How can I compare their answers fairly?

Use the same prompts in both services, compare the answers against product listings and manufacturer information, and judge the results against your own requirements. This is a practical evaluation method, not a claim that either assistant has been independently tested here.

  1. Choose one concrete shopping decision. Use a real need, such as finding a product for a stated use and budget, rather than asking which assistant is “better.” A specific task makes the answers easier to assess.
  2. Set the same constraints. Include the product type, intended use, budget, required features and any deal-breakers. Keep the wording and constraints the same in each service so one assistant does not get an easier question.
  3. Check product relevance. Do the suggested items meet the budget and requirements you stated? Note any recommendation that misses a must-have feature or relies on an unstated assumption.
  4. Verify material facts. Compare important specifications with the retailer’s product detail page and, where needed, the manufacturer’s information. Check details that could affect fit or safety rather than relying on a summary.
  5. Assess the review summary. Look for meaningful advantages and limitations, and check whether the underlying reviews support the summary. A useful answer should help you understand trade-offs, not merely repeat product attributes.
  6. Judge the comparison. Does the assistant explain why one option might suit your constraints better, or simply list features? Identify the trade-off you care about, such as price versus a required feature.
  7. Check price context separately. If price history or alerts matter, confirm that the relevant tool is available in your market and inspect the displayed information. Do not interpret the presence of a price tool as proof that the retailer has the lowest price.
  8. Review purchase controls before acting. Notice whether the service asks you to confirm a cart change or purchase, and inspect any permissions or limits it offers. Do not assume the controls match across services.
  9. Check convenience and access. Confirm that the feature is present in your app, region and preferred shopping channel. A capability described by a company may be rolling out gradually or be limited to a particular market or platform.
  10. Decide whether the result is good enough. Prefer the answer that meets your stated needs and survives verification. If neither does, use the product listings and source information directly rather than forcing a choice between the assistants.

Example prompt for a useful comparison

A prompt could read: “I need a [product type] for [specific use]. My maximum budget is [amount]. I require [feature one] and [feature two], and I do not want [deal-breaker]. Compare a few options and explain the main trade-offs.” Replace each bracketed phrase with your actual details. Use the same completed prompt in each assistant, then verify the named products and claims in their listings.

For a review-focused question, ask the assistant to separate commonly reported strengths from commonly reported complaints and identify which details you should verify on the product page. That phrasing gives you a clearer basis for checking the summary than a broad request for the “best” product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a price-focused comparison, ask what price context or price-history information is available, but do not assume both services have the same tool. If one response provides a chart or alert, check the date range and market coverage and compare the exact item. For purchase actions, start by asking what the assistant proposes to do; review any cart or order details and approval settings before confirming an action.

What do Amazon’s usage and price-history figures prove?

Amazon reports that more than 250 million customers used Rufus during the year described in its official overview. The same overview says customers using Rufus during a shopping trip were more than 60% more likely to make a purchase. These are company-reported observations, not independent findings that Rufus caused those purchases or performed better than Sparky.

The “more likely” figure should not be read as a controlled demonstration that the assistant caused a shopper to buy, much less that it led to a better purchase. People who choose to use an assistant may already be more engaged or further along in a shopping trip. The reported figure also does not compare Rufus with Walmart’s assistant under matching conditions.

Amazon also said in a June 2026 update that more than 50 million customers had used its price-history feature. The feature offers 30-, 90- and 365-day views in supported markets, with availability varying by country and rollout. Those figures describe use of Amazon’s own feature; they do not compare prices across retailers or measure answer accuracy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

None of these numbers provides a controlled, head-to-head comparison of Sparky and Alexa for Shopping. They should be read as information Amazon reported about its service, not as a scorecard for choosing between the two. The sources cited for the feature descriptions do not provide an independent performance statistic establishing that either assistant is more accurate or produces better shopping outcomes.

What should I know about purchase controls and privacy?

Walmart’s October 21, 2026 announcement described dedicated profiles for third-party agents as planned for the following month. Walmart said customers would be able to configure approval requirements or spending limits, that purchases must be approved by default, and that agents would not be able to access payment-card information or change payment methods. Because the profile rollout was described as forthcoming, do not assume those controls are already available to every shopper or agent.

The announcement also said the agent provider’s privacy policy applies to information shared with that provider, while Walmart processes information it receives under Walmart’s Privacy Notice. That distinction matters when a shopping experience involves both a retailer and an outside agent: check the policies and permissions shown for the specific service you use. Consider what information you choose to share and which permissions you enable, especially if a third-party provider is involved.

Amazon’s feature descriptions establish that it offers agentic shopping capabilities, but the materials cited here do not give a directly comparable account of purchase approvals, spending limits or privacy settings. Do not infer that Amazon and Walmart provide identical safeguards. Before enabling an action that can affect a cart or purchase, inspect the service’s current settings and confirm what it can do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability and controls can change as features roll out. Check the current app experience and terms at the time you use an assistant; a feature description or announcement does not guarantee that the same option is present in every country, account or platform.

What is the practical verdict?

There is no substantiated overall winner. Amazon’s published features are more explicit about personalization based on shopping activity, price tracking, reordering and agentic actions; Walmart’s overview directly describes building lists and planning occasions, alongside product discovery and comparisons. Those distinctions can guide what to try first, but they do not establish superior accuracy or shopping outcomes.

Start with the retailer you already use for the task at hand. If the assistant’s response affects an important purchase, check its claims against the listing and manufacturer information, and make the purchase decision yourself. For an honest comparison, use matching prompts and judge each answer against the same requirements. If price history, alerts or reordering are the priority, Amazon’s published descriptions are more explicit about those tools. If list building or occasion planning in Walmart’s ecosystem is the priority, Walmart describes those use cases directly. In either case, confirm feature availability in your market and account before counting on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Sparky and Alexa for Shopping for the same purchase?

Yes, you can ask each assistant the same question and use the results as separate starting points. Keep the constraints identical, then confirm that any product each recommends is actually available and meets your requirements before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Amazon’s Rufus usage figure mean Alexa for Shopping is more popular than Sparky?

No. The figure Amazon reports concerns Rufus use, but it does not provide a comparable Walmart Sparky usage figure. Without matching definitions and comparable data, it cannot establish a popularity ranking.

Can either assistant guarantee that a recommended product is the best choice?

No guarantee is established by the companies’ feature descriptions. Treat a recommendation as a shortlist, especially when a product’s specifications, fit or limitations matter to your decision.

Is Amazon Rufus still the assistant’s name?

Amazon says the assistant was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. Rufus remains useful to know because older articles and shoppers may still use that name.

Does Sparky currently support automatic reordering, service booking, and text, image, audio, and video inputs?

Walmart described those capabilities as planned when it announced Sparky in June 2025. Its current overview describes voice and camera capabilities as emerging, but the launch announcement alone does not confirm broad availability of every planned feature. Check your app for current options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Amazon’s price history prove Amazon has the lowest price?

No. Amazon describes 30-, 90- and 365-day price-history views in supported markets, but that history concerns Amazon’s pricing and does not compare current offers across retailers.

Are Walmart’s third-party agent purchase controls available to everyone?

Walmart’s October 21, 2026 announcement described dedicated profiles and customer-configured controls as planned for the following month. It is not a guarantee that the profiles or controls are already available in every account.

Which assistant is more accurate?

The company feature descriptions and reported usage figures do not establish that either assistant is more accurate. Compare both with the same prompt and verify material claims against product listings and manufacturer information.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: There is no substantiated overall winner between Walmart Sparky and Amazon Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus). Amazon describes price history, price tracking, reordering and agentic shopping more explicitly; Walmart describes list building and occasion planning directly. Choose based on the task and retailer you use, check whether the feature is available to you, and verify important product details before buying.
