For unattended automated trading, a VPS is usually better than leaving a home computer running. It keeps MetaTrader, Expert Advisors (EAs), and signal subscriptions online when your electricity, device, or home internet fails, and a server near your broker can shorten network delay. For discretionary trading that you actively supervise from a reliable workstation, the monthly subscription and administration often add little value. A VPS changes the reliability and network path of your setup—not the quality or profitability of your strategy.
What does a VPS change for a trading setup?
A virtual private server is a remotely hosted computer that runs your trading terminal continuously. You connect to it over the internet, install the platform and EAs, and leave the session running even after shutting down your local computer. The broker still holds your account and positions; the VPS supplies the operating environment that sends orders and runs terminal-dependent logic.

This distinction matters. A VPS can remove failures caused by a home power cut, a sleeping laptop, a router reboot, or a local software crash. Is a VPS better for discretionary or automated trading?
The best choice depends more on how you trade than on the advertised processor or memory. Use the following comparison before paying for a server.

Will a VPS reduce trading latency?
It can, but only when the server has a shorter or more reliable network path to your broker than your home connection. “VPS” is not itself a latency specification. Two providers in different cities can produce very different delays to the same broker, and a powerful server in the wrong region may be slower than a modest one nearby.
What the published latency figures mean
MetaQuotes reported that its MetaTrader VPS service provided a delay of less than 3 milliseconds for 70% of brokers’ trading servers in 2023. These are vendor-reported network figures for specified server populations, not guarantees for your account and not measurements of profitability.

The MetaTrader virtual-hosting wizard can compare the hosted and local network delay for your broker. Treat that measurement as more useful than a generic “low-latency” label. Test from the candidate location to the exact trade server shown in your platform, and repeat the test at different times if your strategy is sensitive to delay.
What low latency cannot do
- It cannot turn a losing EA into a profitable one.
- It cannot guarantee an order will fill at the requested price during fast markets.

That is a vendor commitment, not a promise that your terminal, broker connection, EA, or local access method will never fail. A high infrastructure uptime percentage still leaves you responsible for configuration, renewals, and monitoring.

The terminal stops after a renewal failure
