Private Internet Access is the best fit when you need unlimited simultaneous VPN connections. If you prefer a capped service, NordVPN and Proton VPN allow up to 10 active devices, while CyberGhost allows seven. A VPN-compatible router can protect every device on your home network through one router connection, which is useful when an app limit is too restrictive.
This guide explains the difference between installing a VPN on many devices and using many devices at once, compares the documented limits and platform support, and shows how to choose between individual apps, family plans, and a router-based setup.

What does “multiple devices” mean for a VPN?
VPN providers usually distinguish between the number of devices where an app can be installed and the number that can be connected simultaneously. A subscription may be installable on unlimited devices but still enforce a smaller active-session limit.
- Installed devices: phones, computers, televisions, browsers, or routers where the VPN software or configuration exists.
- Simultaneous connections: devices actively connected to the VPN at the same time. This is the limit that matters for a household using the service together.
- Router connection: a VPN configured on a compatible router generally uses one provider connection while covering devices behind that router.
For example, CyberGhost says it can be installed on any number of devices but supports seven active connections. NordVPN documents a similar distinction for routers: the router uses one device slot while protecting devices connected to the network.

Which VPNs support the most simultaneous connections?
Among the providers with documented limits, Private Internet Access is the clearest unlimited-connection choice. NordVPN and Proton VPN cap paid plans at 10 active devices, and CyberGhost allows seven.
| Provider | Active connections | Installation scope | Router support documented | Platform information | Family or account details |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private Internet Access | Unlimited simultaneous connections | Unlimited connections on one subscription; specific installation count not stated | Yes; router, computer, and mobile use are named | Specific operating-system list not stated | Single-subscription unlimited use; separate family-account structure not stated |
| NordVPN | Up to 10 devices | Not stated | Yes; a router consumes one device slot | Specific operating-system list not stated | Single-account limit; separate family plan not stated |
| Proton VPN | Up to 10 devices on paid plans | Not stated | Router support is not specified in the cited plan details | Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, iOS, iPadOS, Chromebook, and browser extensions | Duo and Family plans add multiple accounts |

Yes, based on its published support information, Private Internet Access (PIA) is the most direct choice for a large household that wants unlimited simultaneous connections. PIA states that one subscription allows unlimited connections across routers, computers, and mobile devices.
Why PIA suits large households
- There is no published numerical cap on simultaneous connections in the cited support statement.
- The documentation explicitly includes routers, so you can cover devices that cannot run a conventional VPN app.
- Computers and mobile devices are supported alongside the router option.
What to verify before buying
“Unlimited” describes the connection allowance, not every other plan condition. Confirm the current acceptable-use language, supported router firmware, protocol choices, server locations, billing term, price, and refund policy. The cited material does not establish PIA’s current values for those categories.
When is NordVPN a better choice than an unlimited service?
NordVPN is a strong capped option for households that can stay within 10 active devices. Its support documentation says one account can connect up to 10 devices at the same time.
How NordVPN works with a router
NordVPN states that a router uses one device slot. Every phone, television, console, or smart-home product using that router’s network is then protected through the router connection, rather than consuming a separate slot in the same way an individual app would.

Who should choose it
- Households with ten or fewer active VPN sessions.
- People who want a documented router approach but do not need unlimited app connections.
- Homes where many devices are on one network and a router can consolidate coverage.
Count simultaneous sessions rather than total household hardware. A family may own more than 10 devices but stay under the limit if only a subset is connected to the VPN at any one time or if the rest are covered through a router.
Is Proton VPN good for families with many device types?
Proton VPN’s paid plans support up to 10 devices at once, and its Duo and Family plans add multiple accounts. That combination is useful when family members need their own credentials instead of sharing one login.
Platform coverage
Proton lists apps or extensions for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, iOS, iPadOS, Chromebook, and major browsers. It also lists servers in more than 140 countries, which can matter when family members travel or need a particular region.
Choosing between a single plan and family plans
- Single paid plan: up to 10 active devices under the account’s documented allowance.
- Duo or Family: multiple accounts, which separates credentials and makes personal device management easier.
The available account structure, billing terms, and exact number of included users depend on the plan shown at purchase. Confirm those details on the current plan page rather than assuming that every family tier has the same allowance.
Is seven simultaneous connections enough with CyberGhost?
CyberGhost is suitable for a smaller household that can keep active VPN use to seven devices. Its support documentation says the app can be installed on unlimited devices, but only seven can be connected simultaneously.
When seven works
- One or two people use laptops and phones while a television or tablet is also connected.
- You install the app broadly but do not need every device online through the VPN at once.
- You want to avoid configuring a router and can monitor active sessions.
When to choose another arrangement
If your household regularly exceeds seven active sessions, an unlimited provider or a router-based design is less frustrating than repeatedly disconnecting devices. CyberGhost’s cited material does not establish router support, so verify compatibility before planning a router installation around it.

Can a VPN router protect every device in a house?
Usually, yes. A compatible router sends traffic from devices on its network through the VPN tunnel, including devices that cannot install a VPN app. Security.org’s 2026 methodology describes this setup as protecting all connected devices while consuming one VPN connection slot; NordVPN and PIA also document router use.
What a router can cover
- Smart TVs and streaming boxes without a native app.
- Game consoles, speakers, cameras, and other connected equipment.
- Guest devices that join the protected wireless network.
What a router cannot solve
- Devices using a different network, such as cellular data or a neighbor’s Wi-Fi.
- Per-device location choices when every device shares the router’s VPN endpoint.
- Performance problems caused by a router that lacks sufficient processing power or compatible firmware.
Router setup checklist
- Confirm that the router model and firmware support VPN client mode, not only VPN pass-through.
- Check that the provider supplies configuration instructions for that firmware and supports a protocol the router can run.
- Record your existing router settings so you can restore the original configuration if needed.
- Import the provider’s configuration or enter the required server, authentication, and certificate details.
- Connect one test device and check its public IP address, DNS behavior, and access to local services.
- Move additional devices to the protected network and test streaming, calls, gaming, and smart-home functions.
- Keep a second network or a quick-disable method available for devices that need the normal internet route.
Router interfaces differ by manufacturer, so do not assume that instructions for one model apply to another. A provider’s current router guide and your router’s firmware documentation are the authoritative sources for exact menu names.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow should you compare VPNs for a whole household?
Connection count is only the first filter. Use the following checklist before deciding which plan fits your home.
1. Count peak simultaneous use
List every device that may be connected at the same time during the busiest period: phones, work computers, tablets, TVs, browsers, and travel devices. Add a margin for visitors or temporary devices. If the total approaches a cap, consider a router or an unlimited plan.
2. Check every operating system and TV platform
Confirm native support for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, browser extensions, and smart-TV platforms you actually use. Proton’s published list is unusually broad, including Apple TV, Android TV, Chromebook, and iPadOS. For the other providers in this comparison, the cited material does not provide a complete operating-system list, so verify each one directly.
3. Decide whether you need separate accounts
A shared login may be adequate for one household, but separate accounts are easier when family members manage their own devices. Proton specifically offers Duo and Family plans with multiple accounts. The other providers’ family-account structures are not established in the cited information.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Evaluate router compatibility
If you need to cover consoles, smart TVs, or many low-power devices, router support may matter more than an app limit. Confirm firmware, supported protocols, setup instructions, and whether the router can handle your internet speed.
5. Review privacy and logging terms
Read the current privacy policy and logging explanation for the exact provider and plan. The available facts establish connection limits and platform information, but do not establish a comparative ranking of logging policies. Treat marketing labels as a prompt to inspect the actual policy.
6. Compare server geography and protocol choices
Server locations affect which regional services you can reach and how far traffic travels. Proton lists servers in more than 140 countries; equivalent figures for the other providers are not stated here. Check the current server list and supported protocols for your devices before purchase.
7. Check plan length, price, and refund period at checkout
Prices, promotions, renewal rates, plan lengths, and refund windows vary by country and date. None of those values is established consistently for the providers in this comparison, so use the provider’s checkout page for the final total and terms.

For app-based coverage, install the provider’s official application on each device, sign in, select a server, and connect. Keep a written count of active sessions if your plan has a cap.
- Subscribe to the plan that matches your peak simultaneous-device count.
- Install the official app from the provider’s current download page or your device’s approved app store.
- Sign in using the account credentials or the individual family account assigned to you.
- Choose a nearby server for general use or a specific country when you have a legitimate regional need.
- Allow the VPN permission requested by the operating system and confirm the connection indicator appears.
- Repeat on each computer, phone, tablet, browser, and TV you want to protect.
- Disconnect idle devices when approaching a provider’s simultaneous-connection limit.
For devices that cannot run an app, use the router method instead. Do not install both a router VPN and a device VPN without a reason: double tunneling can complicate local-network access and reduce performance.

What should you do when the VPN says too many devices are connected?
The message normally means the provider has detected more active sessions than your plan permits, not that the app is installed on too many devices.
- Open the provider’s account dashboard and sign out inactive sessions if that control is available.
- Turn off VPN connections on old phones, unused browsers, tablets, and televisions.
- Restart the device that should remain connected so it can renegotiate a clean session.
- Check whether a router is using a slot; NordVPN explicitly counts a router as one device connection.
- If the household still exceeds the allowance, move high-use devices behind a compatible router or choose a plan with a larger allowance.
Session records can take a short time to clear after an abrupt shutdown. If the account still reports an excess after every device is disconnected, contact the provider’s support team rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.

How common are unlimited-device VPN plans in 2026?
Unlimited simultaneous connections remain uncommon. Top10VPN reported that 19% of 36 paid VPNs it reviewed supported unlimited devices in 2026. Its methodology covered 59 VPNs and more than 30,000 testing hours, providing context for why an unlimited allowance is a differentiating feature rather than the default.
Security.org reported a separate 2026 methodology involving more than 50 VPNs, 300 speed tests, and over 2,500 research hours. These figures describe testing scope, not a guarantee that any particular provider will be fastest or most private on your network.
Which setup is right for your household?
- Choose Private Internet Access when unlimited simultaneous connections are the overriding requirement and you want documented router, computer, and mobile support.
- Choose NordVPN when 10 active devices are sufficient and a documented router approach is important.
- Choose Proton VPN when you need up to 10 devices, broad desktop, mobile, TV, and browser coverage, and the option of separate Duo or Family accounts.
- Choose CyberGhost when seven active connections cover your normal use and unlimited installation is more important than unlimited simultaneous use.
- Use a VPN router when consoles, smart TVs, and other network devices must be protected without individual apps, or when one router connection can keep you under an app limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a VPN on more devices than my plan allows?
Often, yes. Installation count and active-session count are separate controls; CyberGhost explicitly allows installation on unlimited devices while limiting simultaneous use to seven. Always check the provider’s current wording because some services may apply account, activation, or fair-use restrictions in addition to the connection cap.
Will a VPN router slow every device in my home?
It can, because the router encrypts and routes traffic for the entire network. The effect depends on the router’s processor, firmware, protocol, internet speed, and server distance, so test one device before moving the whole household network.
Can family members use different VPN locations at the same time?
With separate app connections, each device can generally select its own server. Devices protected through one VPN router normally share the router’s selected tunnel, so per-device locations require separate app connections or more advanced network segmentation.
What happens to devices that are not connected to the VPN router?
They use their ordinary internet route and are not protected by the router tunnel. This includes phones on cellular data, devices joined to another Wi-Fi network, and equipment placed on a bypass or guest network that you configured to avoid the VPN.
