VPN split tunneling and a proxy solve different routing problems. Split tunneling is a VPN policy: selected traffic goes through an encrypted VPN tunnel while excluded traffic uses its ordinary direct route. A proxy is an intermediary configured for a browser or application; it forwards the requests that app sends, while other device traffic is unaffected. Use split tunneling when you need policy-based routing for particular apps, devices, subnets, or destinations. Use a proxy when one browser or application supports the required proxy protocol and you accept the proxy operator as an additional trust point. Neither choice is automatically safer: the result depends on which traffic is covered, how DNS and IPv6 are handled, whether the protocol is supported, and what the VPN or proxy operator can observe.

What is the difference between VPN split tunneling and a proxy?

Split tunneling decides which network traffic uses a VPN route. A proxy decides which requests an application forwards through an intermediary. The first is usually enforced by a VPN client, operating-system route table, firewall, or router policy; the second is usually set in a browser, app, or proxy auto-configuration (PAC) file.

Aspect VPN split tunneling Proxy
Routing scope Selected device, app, destination, subnet, or other IP traffic uses the VPN; excluded traffic is direct. PAC rules or app settings select browser/application requests; other apps normally remain unchanged.
Protection boundary The VPN tunnel protects traffic included by policy to the VPN endpoint. Excluded flows are outside that tunnel. The proxy forwards selected requests. Confidentiality depends on the protocol and app; HTTPS can still encrypt content end to end.
Protocol coverage Can carry IP traffic supported by the VPN implementation and policy, including more than browser requests when configured. Often limited to the protocols the proxy and application understand. Browser PAC services commonly focus on HTTP and HTTPS and may not handle UDP, HTTP/3, or non-browser apps.
Local-network access Direct routes can keep reaching printers, file shares, or other local services if the policy allows them. A PAC rule can return DIRECT for selected hosts or networks; this affects the app using the PAC file.
Failure behavior Bad inclusion or exclusion rules can send sensitive traffic outside the tunnel. DNS and IPv6 need explicit review. PAC logic can deliberately fall back to DIRECT; that is fail-open behavior, not VPN-style containment.
Performance factors Latency depends on the VPN endpoint, path, congestion, and the traffic selected for tunneling. Latency depends on proxy location, congestion, protocol support, and the app’s connection behavior. No universal speed percentage applies.

The IETF describes split tunneling in RFC 7359 as sending “some subset of the traffic” through the VPN while sending other traffic directly to its intended destination. MDN defines a PAC file as a JavaScript function that decides whether browser requests go directly to a destination or through a web proxy. Those definitions explain why the terms are not interchangeable.

How does VPN split tunneling work?

A split-tunnel VPN establishes a tunnel and then applies routing rules. A matching flow is sent to the VPN virtual interface and exits through the VPN endpoint; a non-matching flow follows the normal interface, gateway, and DNS policy unless separate settings change that behavior.

Common rule types

  • Application-based: selected programs use the tunnel while the rest of the device stays direct.
  • Destination-based: traffic for particular IP ranges, domains (where the client supports domain rules), or corporate subnets uses the tunnel.
  • Device-based: a router sends one laptop, television, or other client through the VPN and leaves other household devices direct.
  • Inclusion and exclusion lists: an “include” list defines what must use the VPN; an “exclude” list defines what must bypass it. Different clients use different precedence rules, so read the implementation’s documentation.

What the tunnel does—and does not—cover

Traffic inside the tunnel is protected between the device and the VPN endpoint according to the VPN protocol and its authentication. The VPN operator can still learn metadata about traffic that reaches its endpoint, and the destination can still see whatever identifying information the application sends. Traffic excluded by the split policy does not gain that tunnel’s protection.

Split tunneling is therefore a routing control, not a universal privacy switch. A browser excluded from the tunnel can expose its direct public address to a website. An application that uses a separate background service may not match the rule you expected. A DNS query can also take a different path from the subsequent connection unless DNS is included in the policy.

How does a proxy work?

A forward proxy receives a request from a client, makes a connection to the destination, and returns the response. The client may be configured manually, through an operating-system or application setting, or with a PAC file. A PAC function can return a proxy such as PROXY host:port or return DIRECT to bypass it for a request.

PAC files are request selectors

PAC logic is evaluated for browser requests. Rules can examine the requested host, URL, or network and choose a proxy or a direct connection. This makes PAC useful for “send internal names direct, send external web traffic through the proxy” policies, but it does not automatically intercept every process on the device.

Why proxy protection is application-specific

An HTTP proxy cannot carry an arbitrary protocol simply because the operating system points at it. The application must support the proxy method, and the proxy must support the protocol. Browser-oriented endpoints generally handle HTTP and HTTPS requests; they may not support UDP, HTTP/3, or traffic from non-browser applications. A proxy setting in one browser does not silently cover a mail client, game, DNS resolver, or system update service.

HTTPS protects the application payload between the browser and the HTTPS destination when certificate validation succeeds. The proxy can still observe connection metadata and, depending on the setup, the destination name and timing. Plain HTTP has no comparable end-to-end content protection, so the proxy can read or alter that traffic.

Which is more private and secure: split tunneling or a proxy?

Neither is inherently more private. Compare the exact traffic path and trust boundary instead of the product label.

Encryption and confidentiality

A VPN tunnel encrypts the included traffic between the client and VPN endpoint. It does not encrypt excluded traffic, and it does not replace HTTPS or application-layer encryption between you and the final service. A proxy may carry an HTTPS request without seeing its content, but it still sits in the path and can record metadata; for HTTP, it can read the request and response.

Who can observe what

  • Local network or access provider: may see direct traffic and its destinations; VPN-included traffic is encapsulated to the VPN endpoint, while proxy traffic is visible as a connection to the proxy.
  • VPN operator: can observe metadata for traffic that reaches the VPN endpoint and can associate it with your VPN session under its logging and authentication policy.
  • Proxy operator: can observe metadata for proxied requests and may see unencrypted application content. HTTPS limits content visibility but not all metadata.
  • Destination service: still receives your application-level identifiers, cookies, account information, and any address presented after the VPN or proxy path.

Choose an operator whose jurisdiction, logging policy, authentication, and incident procedures fit your threat model. A technical tunnel cannot compensate for an untrusted endpoint or a browser that leaks information outside the intended path.

Leakage risks

Split-tunnel mistakes commonly come from rules that cover only IPv4 while the application prefers IPv6, or from DNS queries that use the local resolver even when the connection uses the VPN. Check both address families and DNS behavior. PAC configurations can intentionally return DIRECT, so a browser may fail open when the proxy is unavailable. If direct access is unacceptable, use a policy that blocks or fails closed rather than relying on a PAC fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does split tunneling bypass the VPN for some apps?

Yes. If an application is excluded by an app rule, destination rule, device rule, or route precedence, its traffic bypasses the VPN and uses the direct path. That is the defining behavior of split tunneling, not a malfunction.

What “bypass” means in practice

  • An excluded streaming app can use the household connection while a work application reaches a company subnet through the VPN.
  • A local printer can remain reachable through a direct LAN route while internet traffic from another device uses the tunnel.
  • A background helper, browser extension, or child process may use a different executable or destination and therefore not match an application rule.

Before relying on a rule, identify the actual processes, destination ranges, and DNS names involved. Confirm the public address and route for each flow with the application’s own diagnostics or a controlled test, and verify that IPv6 follows the same policy.

What traffic can a proxy handle compared with split tunneling?

Split tunneling can route IP traffic supported by the VPN and policy, whereas a proxy handles only traffic the application can speak through that proxy. This distinction matters for modern browsers, real-time apps, and device services.

Traffic example Split-tunnel VPN Typical browser/PAC proxy
HTTPS web pages Can be included or excluded by policy. Supported when the browser and proxy support HTTPS forwarding.
HTTP/3 over QUIC and other UDP traffic Can be routed if the VPN implementation and policy carry it. Often unsupported by browser-oriented PAC proxy endpoints; the browser may fall back to another protocol or connect directly.
Non-browser application Can be covered by app, destination, device, or router rules. Unaffected unless the application has its own compatible proxy setting or a system-wide proxy mechanism that it honors.
Local printer or corporate subnet Can be sent direct or through the tunnel using route rules. PAC can return DIRECT for matching hosts or networks in the application using the PAC file.

Do not describe a browser proxy as a full-device VPN replacement. Cloudflare’s documentation for its PAC proxy endpoints, for example, notes limits on traffic types and application coverage; compatibility must be checked for the exact endpoint and client.

Should I use split tunneling or a proxy for streaming and work apps?

Use split tunneling when the requirement is “these device flows must use the VPN, while these other flows must stay direct.” Use a proxy when one supported browser or application needs an intermediary and the rest of the device should not change.

Streaming on one device

If a streaming application supports the VPN route and you need its traffic to originate from the VPN endpoint, an app or destination split rule is the broader option. A browser-only proxy can work for a web player that honors the proxy, but it will not automatically cover a smart-TV app, media player, DNS request, or other device service. Geographic availability and service policies change, so neither method guarantees that a particular catalog or stream will be reachable.

Work systems and private subnets

A work VPN with split tunneling can send corporate address ranges through the company tunnel while leaving ordinary internet traffic direct. Follow the organization’s policy: some employers prohibit split tunneling because they require inspection or endpoint controls for all traffic. A personal proxy should not be used to circumvent a workplace VPN’s security requirements.

Local devices and ordinary browsing

Split tunneling can preserve access to a local printer or NAS by keeping the LAN route direct while selected internet destinations use the VPN. A PAC file can provide a similar browser-only exception by returning DIRECT for local names, but other applications will not inherit that decision.

How do I configure split tunneling safely?

The exact labels differ by VPN client and router firmware, but the safe process is consistent: define the policy, account for DNS and IPv6, then verify every important flow.

  1. Write the desired path first. List applications, devices, destination subnets, and local services that must use the VPN or must remain direct. Mark any traffic that must never fail open.
  2. Check client capabilities. Confirm whether the VPN supports app-based, route-based, destination-based, or router policy rules. Verify that the required protocol and authentication method are supported by the firmware or client version.
  3. Set inclusion and exclusion precedence. Add the narrowest rules first, then check how overlapping app, subnet, and default routes are resolved. Avoid assuming that an exclusion always overrides an inclusion.
  4. Configure DNS deliberately. Decide which resolver handles VPN destinations and which handles direct destinations. Test for queries leaving through the wrong interface or resolving a private name from an untrusted resolver.
  5. Handle IPv6 explicitly. Include IPv6 ranges in the policy, disable IPv6 only when that is an intentional and supported control, or use a client that enforces equivalent IPv4 and IPv6 behavior.
  6. Apply and reconnect. Some clients install routes only after reconnecting the VPN or restarting the network service. Reconnect before testing.
  7. Verify each route. Check the public address seen by a VPN-included app and a direct app, test a corporate or local subnet, and inspect DNS and IPv6 results. Test the behavior when the VPN disconnects.
  8. Document recovery. Keep a way to disable the policy or restore the original routes. A mistaken rule can strand the device from local services or send sensitive traffic direct.

Using a VPN-capable router

A router with policy-based routing can assign selected devices or destinations to a VPN tunnel and leave the rest on the ordinary WAN route. Before buying or deploying one, verify the firmware’s supported VPN protocols, policy granularity, IPv6 and DNS controls, throughput under encryption, and behavior when the tunnel fails. Product listings alone are not a substitute for the firmware documentation.

How do I configure a proxy or PAC file?

Start with the application that needs the proxy. A proxy setting in one browser does not guarantee coverage elsewhere.

  1. Obtain the endpoint details. Record the proxy hostname, port, authentication method, supported protocols, and whether the operator requires a PAC URL.
  2. Choose manual or automatic configuration. Manual settings fit a single fixed proxy. A PAC URL is appropriate when JavaScript rules must choose a proxy or DIRECT per request.
  3. Scope the setting. Apply it in the browser or application when only that program should use the proxy. Use an operating-system setting only after confirming which applications honor it.
  4. Review PAC behavior. Read each return path, including fallback rules. A statement such as return "DIRECT"; is an intentional bypass when the proxy is unavailable.
  5. Test supported protocols. Check HTTPS pages, authentication, downloads, and any required real-time or HTTP/3 feature. Confirm what happens when the proxy is unreachable.
  6. Check name resolution and WebRTC-style paths. Determine whether DNS is resolved locally or by the proxy and whether the application opens separate connections that ignore the proxy setting.
  7. Remove stale credentials and settings. Clear saved proxy passwords and old PAC URLs when changing operators, and verify that a device management profile has not silently re-applied a previous configuration.

A PAC file is code executed by the browser, so treat it as a security-sensitive configuration. Obtain it from a trusted administrator or operator, inspect unexpected domains and fallback logic, and avoid copying a PAC file whose behavior you cannot explain.

What are the main failure modes, and how can I fix them?

Only some traffic uses the VPN

That may be the intended split policy. Compare the application’s process and destination with the rule, then inspect route precedence. If a child process or IPv6 connection is outside the match, add an appropriate rule or route it explicitly.

Private websites stop resolving

The VPN may require an internal DNS resolver, while the device is still using a direct resolver. Set DNS handling to match the private subnet policy and test both the name lookup path and the subsequent connection.

Local printer or NAS disappears

The VPN may install a default route that outranks the LAN route, or the split policy may include the local subnet unintentionally. Add a specific direct route for the LAN, permit local access in the client, and check IPv6 link-local behavior if the device uses it.

The proxy works in one browser but not another app

Application proxy support is not universal. Configure the second app separately if it supports the proxy protocol, or use a VPN policy when the traffic requires device-wide or non-HTTP coverage.

Connections go direct when the proxy fails

Inspect the PAC file for a DIRECT fallback and decide whether fail-open behavior is acceptable. If the traffic must not leave directly, remove that fallback where supported and add a firewall or VPN fail-closed control.

Streaming quality or access changes unexpectedly

Endpoint distance, congestion, protocol fallback, destination policy, and service-side geographic controls can all change the result. Test the exact app and protocol; do not infer behavior from a browser test or from one network.

How should I choose between them?

Use this decision sequence rather than choosing by the word “VPN” or “proxy” alone.

  1. Need more than browser traffic? Choose split tunneling if games, native apps, device services, UDP, or multiple protocols must follow one policy. A proxy is suitable only when every required application supports it.
  2. Need different paths for different devices or subnets? Choose router or client policy-based split tunneling. PAC rules are limited to the applications that evaluate them.
  3. Need one browser request class to use an intermediary? A PAC or application proxy is usually simpler, especially when selected hosts should return DIRECT.
  4. Must traffic never bypass protection? Avoid relying on an ordinary split exclusion or PAC fail-open rule. Use explicit firewall, DNS, IPv6, and disconnect controls that enforce the required failure behavior.
  5. Is the endpoint trustworthy? Both designs add an operator that can observe metadata for traffic reaching it. Evaluate logging, authentication, jurisdiction, and operational practices before sending sensitive traffic.

The practical answer can be a combination: a VPN split policy for work subnets or selected devices, plus a browser PAC rule for a separate application. Keep the policies separate, document which one has authority, and test their interaction after every client, router, or browser update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I verify before relying on a configuration?

  • The exact applications and child processes covered by the rule.
  • IPv4 and IPv6 routes for included and excluded destinations.
  • DNS resolver selection, search domains, and private-name resolution.
  • Whether the application uses UDP, HTTP/3, QUIC, or another protocol the proxy may not support.
  • Local-network reachability for printers, storage, and corporate resources.
  • Behavior when the VPN or proxy is slow, unavailable, or disconnected.
  • What metadata the VPN or proxy operator can retain and what HTTPS does or does not conceal.
  • Whether a browser, operating-system profile, router, or mobile-management policy can overwrite your settings.

Re-test after changing networks, updating the VPN client, replacing router firmware, or enabling IPv6. Routing policies are implementation-specific; a configuration that works on one device is not proof that another device follows the same path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a proxy and a VPN at the same time?

Yes, but the result depends on which component is applied first and which applications honor both settings. Test the final route, DNS path, authentication, and failure behavior; stacking them can add latency and make troubleshooting harder without providing automatic extra privacy.

Will split tunneling hide my IP address from every website?

No. Only connections selected for the VPN route use the VPN endpoint’s address. Excluded browsers or apps can still present your ordinary public address, and websites can identify you through accounts, cookies, or other application data.

Does a PAC file protect DNS requests?

Not necessarily. PAC logic chooses how a browser request is connected, while name resolution can occur locally, through the operating system, or through another application path. Confirm the browser and network’s DNS behavior instead of assuming the proxy handles it.

Can a proxy replace a corporate VPN for remote access?

Usually not. A corporate VPN may provide authenticated access to private subnets and carry protocols that a browser proxy cannot. Use the organization’s approved VPN and routing policy for internal systems, and treat a proxy as an application-level intermediary unless administrators specify otherwise.
