Use a forced full-tunnel VPN when your priority is preventing traffic from taking a direct path, applying one inspection policy, and keeping users on untrusted networks under centralized control. Use split tunneling only when you can name every bypass destination, secure it independently, and demonstrate a real capacity or latency benefit for services such as Microsoft 365 or voice and video.

Split tunneling is not automatically faster or safer. It creates two network paths: selected routes use the VPN, while everything else uses the local gateway. A full tunnel makes the VPN the device’s default route, which simplifies monitoring and leakage prevention but can hairpin cloud traffic through a corporate gateway. The right choice depends on security requirements, gateway capacity, route governance, endpoint controls, and whether the VPN can fail closed.

What is the difference between split tunneling and a full-tunnel VPN?

The difference is routing. Split tunneling sends only defined networks or service endpoints through the VPN and leaves other destinations on the user’s normal Internet connection. Full tunneling sends the device’s traffic through the VPN gateway unless an explicit exception is configured.

How split tunneling routes traffic

NIST describes split tunneling as sending organization-specific traffic through an SSL VPN tunnel while other traffic uses the remote user’s default gateway. In practice, the VPN client installs routes for internal networks or approved cloud endpoints. The operating system then chooses the VPN interface for those destinations and the local interface for everything else.

A split configuration can be narrow or broad. A documented list containing a few Microsoft 365 Optimize endpoints is narrow. A setting that lets every Internet destination bypass the VPN is broad full split tunneling and creates a much larger control gap. New Zealand Digital Government guidance calls the selective, controlled pattern inverse split tunneling and warns against unrestricted bypass.

How a full tunnel routes traffic

With full tunneling, the VPN becomes the default route. Web browsing, SaaS connections, software updates, and internal applications all traverse the VPN gateway unless an administrator creates an exception. This gives the organization one primary enforcement point for logging, malware inspection, DNS policy, and egress filtering.

A full tunnel is often called forced or full-device tunneling when the client is configured to prevent direct traffic. Some forced clients fail closed: if the VPN cannot connect, they block network access instead of silently sending traffic over the local gateway. That behavior must be tested because it affects travel, captive portals, and incident recovery.

Is split tunneling safer than a full VPN?

No. For most security-first organizations, a forced full-device VPN is safer because it minimizes the chance that sensitive traffic escapes inspection. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) states: “The NCSC recommends using a full-device VPN and avoid split tunnelling to minimise the risk of data leaking outside the VPN.”

What security exposure does split tunneling create?

Every bypass route is a second trust path. Traffic sent directly over hotel, airport, home, or mobile networks does not receive the same inline inspection, logging, or egress controls as traffic in the tunnel. If an endpoint is connected to both an internal network through the VPN and an untrusted network through its local interface, an external attacker may use the dual-connected device as a route toward internal resources.

Data can also leave through the wrong interface when route lists are incomplete, applications use hard-coded addresses, or a service changes its endpoint range. DNS behavior matters: a direct application path combined with an unrestricted resolver can reveal destinations or bypass organization filtering even when the application itself uses encryption.

What protection does full tunneling provide?

Full tunneling puts most traffic behind one set of controls. Administrators can apply consistent authentication, segmentation, threat detection, logging, and acceptable-use policies without maintaining a long list of exceptions. It also reduces the number of ways a user can accidentally send confidential data over a local network.

Full tunneling is not a complete security solution. VPN software can contain vulnerabilities, credentials can be stolen, endpoints can be compromised, and a flat internal network can let an attacker move after authentication. The mode determines where traffic is routed and inspected; it does not remove the need for patching, strong authentication, endpoint detection, and network segmentation. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security likewise advises avoiding split tunneling as much as possible and treats forced tunneling as the safer posture for many organizations.

Does split tunneling make a VPN faster?

It can improve application responsiveness and reduce gateway load, but there is no universal percentage speed gain. Results depend on gateway capacity, the user’s distance from the gateway, ISP paths, endpoint load, the routes excluded, and the service’s architecture.

Why full tunneling can slow cloud and real-time applications

When a user in one region reaches a cloud service in another region through a corporate gateway, traffic may travel to the gateway and back out to the cloud. This hairpinning adds latency and consumes VPN and Internet-egress capacity. New Zealand Digital Government warns that routing all traffic through an agency network can create a single point of failure and can prevent users from reaching cloud services that would otherwise remain available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Voice, video, interactive collaboration, and other latency-sensitive workloads are especially affected by extra distance, congestion, and gateway inspection queues. RFC 5684 notes that direct paths can perform better for VoIP and interactive gaming when no overriding security requirement applies.

Why selective bypass can relieve bottlenecks

Split tunneling sends approved high-volume traffic directly to its service while retaining the VPN for internal systems and unapproved destinations. Microsoft reports that Optimize-category Microsoft 365 endpoints account for around 70–80% of Microsoft 365 traffic in its current guidance. Microsoft also reported that many customers moved from around 80% internal traffic to 20% or lower in 2020 as workloads shifted to the cloud. Those figures are Microsoft-specific, but they show why forcing every cloud packet through a corporate gateway can waste capacity.

Direct routing helps only when the bypass service has strong encryption and authentication, the endpoint is hardened, and the organization accepts that the traffic will not receive the same inline inspection. Removing the tunnel without replacing those controls simply trades congestion for exposure.

Should I use split tunneling for Teams or other real-time apps?

Use a narrowly scoped exception only after confirming that the VPN gateway is a measurable bottleneck and that the service’s endpoint ranges are explicit and controlled. Microsoft recommends routing specified Teams, SharePoint, and Exchange Online Optimize endpoints directly while keeping other traffic in the VPN.

Conditions for a safe exception

  • The destination list is explicit, stable, documented, and owned or controlled by a trusted provider.
  • The service provides strong encryption and authentication independently of the VPN.
  • Endpoint security, DNS policy, and route controls prevent users or malware from turning the exception into arbitrary Internet access.
  • Monitoring can distinguish direct traffic from tunneled traffic and alert on route or policy changes.
  • The organization accepts that direct traffic will not receive the same inline inspection as tunneled traffic.

Do not treat a general “real-time applications” category as a sufficient policy. Name the service, endpoint ranges, ports, and owner, then review them when the provider changes its published requirements. If you cannot maintain that inventory, retain full tunneling.

When should a remote worker use a forced full tunnel?

Choose forced full tunneling when preventing any direct path matters more than optimizing cloud latency. It is the stronger default for sensitive data, hostile or unknown networks, regulated workflows, centralized malware inspection, mandatory logging, and environments that cannot maintain precise exception lists.

Security-first situations

  • The user handles confidential, personal, financial, health, or intellectual-property data.
  • Policy requires all traffic to pass through a corporate firewall, data-loss-prevention system, or monitoring stack.
  • The endpoint is dual-connected, unmanaged, or difficult to verify.
  • The organization needs a fail-closed posture that blocks traffic when the VPN is unavailable.
  • Security staff cannot continuously review route changes and bypass destinations.

The NCSC recommends forced VPN connections where possible. A forced client may block all traffic until the tunnel is established, so provide a documented process for connecting through a captive portal and for reporting outages rather than weakening the policy during an incident.

How do full and split tunneling compare?

The trade-off is not simply security versus speed. Each mode moves control, capacity, and operational work to a different place.

Decision axis Full tunnel Scoped split tunnel
Security exposure Most device traffic stays behind centralized controls; direct leakage is easier to prevent. Approved traffic uses a second path and receives less or no inline inspection.
Latency and cloud performance Can add distance and hairpinning for cloud, voice, and video services. Can provide a shorter direct path for named services.
VPN gateway bandwidth Consumes capacity for Internet and SaaS traffic as well as internal traffic. Reduces load when high-volume destinations are excluded.
Route governance Primarily one default route, with exceptions reviewed centrally. Requires an accurate, maintained list of networks and service endpoints.
Monitoring coverage Consistent logging and inspection are easier to apply. Direct traffic must be monitored through endpoint, service, DNS, or cloud controls.
Failure behavior Can fail closed and block traffic if the tunnel cannot connect. Usually preserves local Internet access, but a misconfiguration can silently bypass policy.
Operational complexity Simpler route policy, but gateway scaling and egress design are critical. More route, client, endpoint, and change-management work.
Cloud-service compatibility May impair services that expect direct regional access. Can improve access when exception ranges and controls are reliable.

How do you decide which VPN mode to deploy?

Use this sequence before changing a production policy:

  1. Set the primary requirement. If preventing any direct path is the main requirement, choose forced full tunneling.
  2. Measure the alleged bottleneck. Confirm that VPN gateway utilization, egress capacity, or added latency is harming an approved cloud or real-time workload. Do not assume a speed problem from user complaints alone.
  3. Enumerate the exception. List exact networks, hostnames, address ranges, ports, and service owners. If the destination cannot be identified and maintained, keep the traffic in the tunnel.
  4. Verify independent security. Confirm encryption, authentication, endpoint hardening, DNS handling, and service-side access controls for every bypass destination.
  5. Check monitoring capability. Make sure logs can show which traffic used the VPN and which used the local interface, and alert on unauthorized route changes.
  6. Test failure modes. Disconnect the VPN, change networks, use a captive portal, suspend the device, and rotate credentials. Verify that the client behaves as policy requires rather than silently falling back to a direct path.
  7. Document ownership and review dates. Assign someone to track provider endpoint changes and to remove exceptions that no longer solve a measured problem.

How can you implement scoped split tunneling safely?

A vendor-neutral rollout should begin with a small pilot and a rollback plan. The exact client labels differ, but the control sequence is consistent.

  1. Define protected routes. Identify internal networks and applications that must always use the VPN. Include administrative, authentication, and management services.
  2. Define approved direct routes. Add only the named cloud or real-time endpoints that have passed security review. Avoid an “all Internet” exclusion.
  3. Control DNS. Decide which resolver handles direct destinations and which handles internal names. Prevent users from changing resolvers to evade filtering.
  4. Harden the endpoint. Enforce host firewall rules, patching, disk protection, endpoint detection, and controls against unauthorized network bridging or Internet connection sharing.
  5. Separate networks. Ensure the VPN gateway and internal segments restrict lateral movement from a dual-connected endpoint. Do not rely on routing alone as segmentation.
  6. Instrument both paths. Collect VPN session logs, endpoint telemetry, DNS logs, and service access logs so investigators can reconstruct direct and tunneled connections.
  7. Run controlled tests. Confirm internal applications use the tunnel, approved services use the intended direct path, and unlisted destinations cannot bypass policy.
  8. Review continuously. Revalidate endpoint lists, provider changes, client updates, and performance measurements on a defined schedule. Remove an exception when its capacity or latency benefit disappears.

What commonly goes wrong, and how do you fix it?

Users still experience slow cloud applications

Check whether the exception actually matches the service’s current endpoint ranges. A stale route list can leave traffic hairpinned through the gateway. Also check gateway congestion, regional distance, DNS resolution, and endpoint CPU before expanding the bypass.

Internal resources stop working after enabling split tunneling

Inspect route precedence and overlapping address ranges. Private services that share address space with local networks can be sent to the wrong interface. Correct the protected route, avoid overlapping ranges where possible, and retest from every supported network type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security logs no longer show user activity

That is expected for direct traffic unless equivalent endpoint, DNS, cloud, or service-side telemetry exists. Restore the missing visibility before approving a broader exception; do not label uninspected traffic as trusted merely because the destination is familiar.

The VPN blocks users at hotels or airports

A fail-closed client may prevent the browser from reaching a captive-portal sign-in page. Provide an approved enrollment or pre-connect process that allows the device to authenticate to the access network without permitting ordinary work traffic to bypass the VPN.

A service changes its addresses and the exception breaks

Assign ownership for endpoint updates and monitor provider notices. If the service cannot offer a stable, verifiable destination set, move it back behind the VPN or use an access architecture that does not depend on fragile client route lists.

Does cloud adoption or zero trust change the answer?

Yes. As applications move from private networks to cloud services, sending every packet through a traditional VPN can become an expensive detour. Microsoft presents selective tunneling and publishing applications without a VPN as later-stage architectures, while the NCSC notes that a VPN may add limited benefit for organizations that have fully adopted zero trust.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not make broad split tunneling a zero-trust design. Zero trust replaces implicit network trust with continuous identity, device, application, and policy checks. If those controls are not implemented and monitored, simply allowing direct Internet access leaves the organization with less inspection and no compensating assurance.

What is the practical verdict?

Default to forced full tunneling when security, inspection, and leakage prevention are the governing requirements. Consider scoped split or inverse split tunneling only for measured cloud or real-time performance problems, and only when every bypass destination is explicit, independently secured, observable, and continuously reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can split tunneling bypass my organization’s DNS filtering?

It can if the direct path uses an unrestricted resolver or lets applications choose their own DNS method. Enforce resolver policy on the endpoint, define how internal names are resolved, and verify that direct exceptions cannot change DNS behavior.

What should happen when a forced VPN cannot connect?

A fail-closed client should block ordinary network traffic rather than silently using the local gateway. Organizations should provide a separate captive-portal and outage procedure so users can regain authorized connectivity without weakening the policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is inverse split tunneling the same as allowing all Internet traffic outside the VPN?

No. Inverse split tunneling sends a specifically listed set of approved destinations directly and keeps other traffic in the tunnel. Allowing every Internet destination to bypass the VPN removes that boundary and is a much riskier configuration.

When should a company remove a split-tunnel exception?

Remove it when the service no longer delivers a measured latency or capacity benefit, its endpoint list becomes unstable, independent security controls weaken, or monitoring cannot verify the direct path. Treat exceptions as owned policy objects with review dates, not permanent client settings.
