VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator is the centralized management and operations plane for VeloCloud SD-WAN—not the branch appliance itself. Since Arista acquired VeloCloud effective July 1, 2025, Arista is the current support and product path. For new Azure Virtual WAN deployments, Microsoft’s announced block on VMware-branded SD-WAN deployments took effect at the end of June 2026; existing deployments continue to work. If you are choosing a platform now, compare Arista VeloCloud with HPE Aruba EdgeConnect, Versa, Cisco, Fortinet, and Palo Alto against your security strategy, cloud design, operating model, and full lifecycle cost.
What does VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator do?
Orchestrator is the centralized control and operations plane used to configure, provision, monitor, and troubleshoot VeloCloud SD-WAN Edges. The Edges are the branch or virtual devices that connect to WAN links; Orchestrator manages them and applies policies. It is not itself the branch appliance, WAN circuit, or a general-purpose replacement for all of an organization’s routing and security systems.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In a typical design, branch or virtual Edges use one or more available connections—such as broadband, MPLS, or LTE/5G—to reach applications and geographically distributed gateways. Orchestrator provides the central place to define business policies and observe application and link performance. The system can steer application traffic across paths, apply quality-of-service policies, control routes, and support centralized fault management, logging, and reporting.
How the architecture works
The operating sequence matters when comparing platforms. An Edge is activated at a branch, establishes secure connectivity to gateways, and receives its configuration from Orchestrator. The gateway layer provides geographically distributed on-ramps and helps connect branches, data centers, and cloud services. Administrators define business intent centrally, while the Edge measures available paths and applies the assigned policy locally. This separation lets a site use multiple underlays without manually building a separate tunnel and policy set for every application.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, a policy can prefer a low-loss broadband path for interactive traffic, retain MPLS for a sensitive application, and use LTE/5G as a backup. The exact policy syntax, telemetry, and failover behavior must be validated with the vendor; “dynamic path selection” is not a guarantee that every application will behave identically across products.
What is managed centrally?
- Configuration and provisioning: Administrators create and distribute Edge settings and policies rather than configuring each branch as an isolated device.
- Application-aware traffic handling: Application recognition and steering let policies direct traffic according to application needs and available paths.
- Monitoring and operations: Central monitoring, fault management, logs, and reports help operators see link or application issues and investigate them.
- Deployment model: Broadcom’s product brief describes cloud-hosted and on-premises Orchestrator options. Arista’s VeloCloud 7.0 administration guide describes a multi-tenant cloud Orchestrator and zero-touch Edge activation.
- Route and service control: Route advertisements, segmentation, gateway behavior, and service insertion can be coordinated from policy, subject to the capabilities of the Edge and release.
Zero-touch activation can be valuable for branches without networking staff: a device can be shipped to a site, connected to the underlay, and associated with its assigned configuration. It still requires inventory accuracy, an activation workflow, working circuits, identity or licensing prerequisites, and a rollback plan. A cloud console does not eliminate those implementation tasks.

These capabilities explain why an Orchestrator comparison is not just a comparison of appliances. Buyers are choosing a management plane, an Edge and gateway architecture, a policy model, and the support relationship around them.
Is VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator still supported?
VeloCloud ownership changed: Arista acquired the product effective July 1, 2025, and Broadcom says it no longer supports it. Customers should use Arista’s support, documentation, download, and partner channels, and confirm the product name and software version that apply to their own contract and deployment.
“VMware SD-WAN” and “VeloCloud” may still appear in older installations, contracts, marketplace listings, or third-party documentation. That legacy wording does not change the ownership transition. For a support case, renewal, software download, or planned upgrade, confirm the applicable Arista product and release details rather than assuming that a VMware-branded reference describes the current support route.
Arista’s current VeloCloud documentation includes a 7.0 administration guide. The existence of that guide is evidence of current product documentation, not proof that every older Edge, Orchestrator instance, or customer configuration is eligible for that release. Check release notes, support terms, and compatibility for the specific deployment.
What should an existing customer verify?
- Which legal entity now provides support and which partner is authorized to renew or replace your subscription.
- Whether each Edge model, virtual appliance, gateway, and integration is covered by the target software release.
- How software downloads, entitlement checks, escalation, and replacement hardware are handled after the ownership change.
- Whether a contract still uses VMware naming while the order, support, and product documentation use Arista VeloCloud naming.
What changed for VMware SD-WAN in Azure Virtual WAN after June 2026?
Microsoft’s Azure Virtual WAN documentation says new deployments of VMware SD-WAN would be blocked at the end of June 2026. As of October 2026, organizations planning a new deployment in Azure Virtual WAN should evaluate Arista VeloCloud or another supported network virtual appliance (NVA), while existing VMware SD-WAN deployments continue to work under Microsoft’s stated guidance.

This is a deployment decision specific to Azure Virtual WAN; it is not a statement that every existing VeloCloud deployment elsewhere stops working or that every Azure networking design must use the same NVA. If you already run VMware SD-WAN in Azure Virtual WAN, separate the question of continued operation from plans to expand, replace, or redesign the deployment. Confirm current Microsoft and Arista requirements before changing the design.
For a new Azure design, document the NVA image and version, virtual appliance sizing, routing ownership, hub-and-spoke or branch topology, availability design, and how the NVA connects to gateways and on-premises sites. Test route propagation and failure handling in the actual Azure regions you plan to use. A product being listed as an NVA does not by itself prove that its throughput, licensing, or high-availability behavior matches an existing VMware deployment.
Which cloud-managed SD-WAN alternatives should you compare?
Arista VeloCloud is the closest continuity path for a VMware SD-WAN customer because it is the same VeloCloud technology under new ownership. HPE Aruba EdgeConnect, Versa, Cisco, Fortinet, and Palo Alto are other credible candidates, but the right choice depends on how each fits your network, security, cloud, and support requirements.

The table is a shortlist, not a feature-equivalence claim. The available product information does not establish that these platforms use the same licensing, topology, management interface, migration tooling, or security model. Ask each provider to map its proposal to the same written requirements.
Cloud-managed does not mean identical
All six candidates can be presented as centrally managed, but “cloud-managed” can describe different responsibilities. One provider may host the controller and gateways, another may require customer-operated virtual appliances, and a third may bundle firewall or SASE functions into the same subscription. Compare who patches the control plane, where logs are stored, what data is exposed through APIs, how tenant isolation works, and what happens if a branch temporarily loses management-plane reachability.
How should you decide which alternative fits?
Start with the reason for evaluating a replacement. A support or ownership change calls for a different comparison than an Azure deployment constraint, a security consolidation project, or a network refresh. Then score each proposal against the same operating and technical requirements.
1. Set the deployment and support boundary
- List the locations, cloud environments, virtual edges, and WAN links in scope, including any Azure Virtual WAN dependency.
- Record the current Edge models, software releases, Orchestrator deployment model, support contacts, and contract renewal dates.
- Identify what must remain operational during a transition and whether branches can be migrated in stages.
- For every candidate, identify who owns support, how updates and downloads are obtained, and which products and versions are covered by the proposed contract.
2. Compare policy and traffic behavior
Describe how traffic should behave rather than relying on broad claims such as “application-aware” or “dynamic.” Specify the important applications, acceptable performance, path preferences, failover expectations, QoS needs, and route-control requirements. Ask vendors to explain how administrators express those policies and how operators can verify that traffic followed them.

Include segmentation requirements, local internet breakout, cloud application access, voice and video treatment, and asymmetric routing cases. Ask for measurable acceptance criteria such as loss, latency, jitter, convergence time, and the behavior of brownouts—not only complete circuit failures.
3. Test the operating model
Determine whether the proposed orchestration is cloud-managed or self-hosted, who operates the control plane, how multi-tenancy works if relevant, and what monitoring, logs, reports, and troubleshooting views are included. Zero-touch activation can reduce hands-on branch setup, but confirm its prerequisites, workflow, and responsibilities rather than treating the phrase as a complete deployment plan.
Ask how administrators separate read-only, operator, and policy-editing roles; how changes are approved and audited; how long telemetry is retained; and whether alerts can be forwarded to your existing IT service-management or security tools. These details affect staffing and compliance as much as the dashboard itself.
4. Check security and cloud fit
Document whether SD-WAN is expected to complement an existing firewall and SASE architecture or consolidate some of those functions. Compare the security integration actually included in each quoted design, not just the vendor’s broader portfolio. For Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud connectivity, ask for the proposed topology, supported virtual-edge options, routing responsibilities, and any cloud-specific constraints.
Clarify where encryption terminates, who manages certificates or keys, how segmentation maps to security zones, and which inspection services add license or throughput costs. If a vendor proposes an integrated firewall, require a separate statement of inspection capacity and enabled features so that security claims do not obscure the SD-WAN capacity comparison.
5. Evaluate migration and automation
Ask for a migration plan covering policy translation, Edge replacement or reuse, circuit changes, cutover order, rollback, and administrator training. If automation matters, request the supported API and integration details for your use cases. Do not assume that a common SD-WAN lineage means a configuration, API, or support contract transfers unchanged.
Request sample export formats, rate limits, authentication methods, webhook or event support, and the process for testing changes outside production. Include a branch-by-branch inventory and a clear owner for DNS, DHCP, routing, security policy, and circuit-provider coordination during each cutover.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Compare observability and resilience
Request a demonstration using representative fault scenarios: a degraded circuit, a failed path, an unreachable application, and a branch that cannot contact its management plane. Establish what the operations team can see, what is alerted, and what recovery is automatic versus manual. Require equivalent assumptions for high availability and support response when comparing bids.
Also test gateway failure, controller maintenance, loss of a cloud region, and a misapplied policy. Confirm whether the Edge continues forwarding with its last known configuration, how operators regain access, and what evidence is available for post-incident analysis.
How much does VeloCloud SD-WAN cost?
Enterprise SD-WAN pricing is generally quote-driven, and a single appliance price is not a useful estimate of a complete deployment. The available pricing examples show different kinds of commercial arrangements: Versa publishes subscription tiers and term choices without public dollar prices, while AWS Marketplace lists VMware SD-WAN contract entitlements.
| Pricing reference | Published detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Versa Secure SD-WAN | Essential, Professional, and Elite tiers; one-, three-, and five-year subscriptions. The 2025 model bases capacity on device model rather than consumed WAN bandwidth. Public dollar prices are not stated. | Request a quote specifying tier, device model, term, included features, and support. |
| AWS Marketplace VMware SD-WAN contracts | Listed 12-month examples include Enterprise 10 Mbps Basic Support at $310 and Premium 1 Gbps Premier Support at $7,212. Marketplace listings advertise savings of up to 5% for 36-month contracts. | These are contract entitlements, not consumer retail prices or a complete branch-deployment budget. Confirm the exact listing, entitlement, support scope, and term before treating a figure as applicable. |
A physical-product search such as “VeloCloud Edge 510 SD-WAN appliance” can help locate a 300 Mbps cloud-orchestrated branch appliance listing, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed retail recommendation or an all-in price. AWS Marketplace separately lists licenses for physical or virtual appliances, and the license, hardware, support, circuits, and implementation may be separate commercial lines.
Build a like-for-like three-year total cost model that includes:
Recommended Free Tools
- Edge hardware or virtual-edge capacity, plus any required gateways.
- Orchestration or control-plane subscriptions and support level.
- Security or SASE modules included in the target design.
- Broadband, MPLS, LTE/5G, and other underlay circuit costs.
- Migration services, professional services, training, and operational transition.
- Any period of overlapping MPLS or other existing services during the cutover.
- Spare hardware, cloud compute, storage, egress, and monitoring charges where applicable.
Ask every vendor to quote the same throughput, high-availability design, security scope, support response, term, and number of sites. If one proposal includes capabilities or services that another omits, make the difference explicit rather than comparing totals as if the offers were equivalent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the practical replacement path?
If you want to preserve the VeloCloud operating model, begin with Arista because it is the direct continuity path. If you are making a broader platform change, use a requirements-based evaluation rather than assuming a competitor is a drop-in replacement; the available facts do not establish universal configuration or hardware compatibility between vendors.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Inventory the current environment. Record sites, Edge hardware and virtual instances, software versions, gateways, links, key applications, policies, cloud connections, support coverage, and renewal dates.
- Confirm the target use case. Identify whether the driver is ownership/support, a new Azure Virtual WAN deployment, security integration, cost, cloud access, or a planned network refresh.
- Issue a common requirements list. Include traffic steering, QoS, route control, deployment model, observability, APIs, security integration, cloud connectivity, hardware choices, migration support, and service response.
- Request comparable proposals. Require the same site count, throughput assumptions, resilience, security, support level, and contract term, then calculate three-year cost.
- Validate a pilot and migration plan. Select representative branches and failure scenarios. Agree on cutover, rollback, ownership, and acceptance criteria before wider rollout.
For an Azure Virtual WAN design being created after June 2026, include the NVA choice in the initial architecture review rather than assuming that a new VMware-branded deployment remains available. For an existing environment, verify the supported expansion and migration options with Microsoft and the vendor before changing production.
Common buying pitfalls
- Comparing license labels instead of capabilities: “Enterprise” or “premium” tiers can include different security, support, or throughput assumptions.
- Ignoring underlay and overlap costs: A lower SD-WAN subscription may not offset MPLS, LTE backup, cloud egress, or parallel-run expenses.
- Assuming continuity means portability: Arista is the closest lineage match, but verify release, API, hardware, and contract compatibility.
- Using vendor benchmark claims as acceptance tests: Reproduce application and failure scenarios on representative circuits and sites.
- Leaving support ownership ambiguous: Put escalation contacts, response targets, replacement obligations, and software entitlement in the order documents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a VeloCloud Edge appliance include the Orchestrator subscription?
The available product information does not establish a universal bundle: hardware, virtual capacity, orchestration, support, and security may be quoted separately or together depending on the offer. Ask for an itemized bill of materials and contract terms for the exact Edge and deployment model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill a VMware SD-WAN configuration import directly into another vendor’s platform?
No general configuration-transfer guarantee is established for the alternatives covered here. Treat policy translation, APIs, Edge reuse, and migration tooling as vendor-specific items to prove in a pilot and document in the migration scope.
Does the Arista VeloCloud 7.0 guide mean I should upgrade to version 7.0?
Not by itself. Documentation for a release does not establish that it is supported or compatible with every customer’s Orchestrator, Edge hardware, integrations, or contract; check the applicable release notes and support guidance before planning an upgrade.
Are AWS Marketplace VMware SD-WAN listings regular retail appliance prices?
No: the cited Marketplace examples are contract entitlements for specified terms and support categories, not a general retail price for an appliance or full deployment. Confirm what the listing licenses and whether hardware, circuits, implementation, or other services are priced separately.
What replaced VMware VeloCloud?
Arista VeloCloud is the direct continuity path because Arista acquired VeloCloud effective July 1, 2025. HPE Aruba EdgeConnect, Versa, Cisco, Fortinet, and Palo Alto are independent alternatives, not automatic replacements.
Can I deploy VMware SD-WAN in Azure Virtual WAN after 2026?
Microsoft states that new VMware SD-WAN deployments in Azure Virtual WAN are blocked at the end of June 2026. Existing deployments continue to work under that guidance. New designs should evaluate Arista VeloCloud or another supported NVA and confirm current requirements with Microsoft.
What is the best cloud-managed SD-WAN alternative to VMware?
There is no universal best choice. Arista VeloCloud is the closest operational and technology continuity option; HPE Aruba EdgeConnect, Versa, Cisco, Fortinet, and Palo Alto may fit better when security integration, cloud architecture, existing skills, or vendor consolidation is the primary requirement.
How should I compare SD-WAN quotes?
Normalize site count, Edge or virtual capacity, throughput, high availability, gateways, security modules, support response, contract term, implementation, circuits, and any MPLS overlap. Then compare the resulting three-year total rather than a single license or appliance line.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Orchestrator is the management plane, not the Edge. Arista’s July 1, 2025 VeloCloud acquisition makes Arista the support and continuity path, while Microsoft’s June 2026 Azure Virtual WAN cutoff changes the choices for new Azure designs. Compare Arista, HPE Aruba EdgeConnect, Versa, Cisco, Fortinet, and Palo Alto using the same architecture, security, support, migration, and three-year cost assumptions.
