Vision AI can help protect retail margins by flagging checkout exceptions, improving visibility into stock availability, and supplying traffic or queue information that staff can act on. Its financial value is conditional: an alert only helps if it identifies a real problem, fits the store’s workflow, and leads to an effective response. Published savings figures are vendor-reported or drawn from commissioned material, not a dependable forecast for a typical retailer.
How can vision AI protect retail margins?
Vision AI uses camera imagery to identify activity or conditions that matter to a store operation. In a checkout workflow, a system may compare what a camera observes with the transaction flow and flag a possible missed scan, an item left in a basket, or product switching. In other settings, computer vision can contribute to shelf visibility, stockout management, traffic analysis, or queue management.

The important distinction is between detecting an exception and improving a financial result. A flagged event is an opportunity for a cashier, supervisor, or operations team to investigate; it is not automatically a confirmed loss or recovered sale. The outcome depends on the retailer’s starting losses and availability problems, the system’s integration with store processes, staff response, customer impact, and deployment costs.
That makes vision AI an operational tool rather than a stand-alone margin guarantee. It can make certain store events more visible and actionable, but the available evidence does not establish a universal return on investment or typical margin lift.

Can cameras detect missed scans at self-checkout?
They can be used to flag possible missed scans and related checkout exceptions, especially when camera observations are connected to point-of-sale (POS) activity. The alert should be treated as a prompt for review, not as proof that a customer intended to steal.
What a checkout alert may identify
- A product appears to move through the checkout area without a corresponding scan.
- An item may remain in a basket or otherwise fail to enter the transaction.
- A product may have been switched during the checkout process.
UST describes a deployment pattern that connects checkout CCTV to a POS-linked AI workflow, allowing the system to surface an alert or image for staff. A company disclosure hosted by HKEX describes a different combination of computer vision and weight-based protection, with alerts for possible missed or fake scans. These examples illustrate integration approaches; they do not establish that every system detects every event accurately or produces the same results.

What staff still have to do
An alert needs a response path. A cashier or supervisor may need to review the image, assess the transaction, and decide whether to assist the shopper or take another action under store policy. If staff cannot see, interpret, or act on alerts in time, detection alone may not reduce loss. A poorly managed intervention can also create unnecessary customer friction.
Retailers should therefore assess the whole workflow, not just whether a system can recognize a visual pattern. Important questions include who receives an alert, what context is displayed, how staff handle uncertain events, and how the business records whether an alert was useful.

Does vision AI improve inventory accuracy and availability?
Computer vision is also used or considered for inventory and stockout management, but that is a distinct operational use case from checkout loss prevention. Better visibility into shelves may help teams notice an availability problem; the evidence here does not establish a general, independently measured margin effect from these applications.
NVIDIA’s 2024 State of AI in Retail and CPG survey reports that 39% of respondents identified stockout and inventory management as an AI use case. That figure describes reported use-case interest or activity in the survey, not a measured improvement in inventory accuracy, sales, or profit. It should not be read as evidence that 39% of retailers achieved a particular result.

Keeping the categories separate helps avoid overstating what a deployment can do. A checkout system aimed at missed scans addresses potential loss at the point of sale. A shelf-visibility application addresses availability and replenishment decisions. A retailer may pursue both, but success in one does not prove success in the other.
What do retailers’ reported results actually show?
Published figures suggest that individual deployments can report substantial outcomes, but the numbers are not directly comparable and should not be treated as expected results for another retailer.

| Source and evidence type | Reported figure | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| UST vendor case study; publication date not stated | 80% reduction in over-the-counter losses and up to 10% higher profits per lane per day | A vendor-reported result from an unnamed US grocery chain with more than 300 stores. It is a deployment-specific claim, not a typical-store forecast. |
| Centific vendor customer story; publication date not stated | 175 participating stores, $180 million in annual shrinkage reduction, and 75 labor hours saved per week | Vendor-reported results for an anonymized retailer. The reported figures do not establish an independently comparable outcome for other chains. |
| Forrester study commissioned by Everseen, September 2024 | A US regional grocery retailer’s vice president of asset protection and safety said, “Evercheck contributed to thirteen consecutive quarterly drops in shrink.” | An interview statement in a commissioned study. It is not independent proof that the named system caused the reductions. |
The figures use different measures: losses, profit per lane per day, annual shrinkage, and labor hours. The reported settings and methods are not presented as a common controlled comparison, so adding the results together or using one as a benchmark for another retailer would be misleading. No independently comparable cross-retailer estimate of typical margin lift, false-positive rates, or results by store format is established in the available material.
What do retailers plan to use computer vision for?
Survey results indicate planned or reported areas of interest; they are not evidence that the planned systems were deployed successfully or generated a financial return.

| IDC, 2023 Global Retail Survey, as reported in IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Retail 2024 Predictions | 35% planned investment in computer vision for frictionless shelf-checkout or automated checkout; 34% for fraud and loss prevention; 37% for traffic intelligence and queue management | Investment plans reported by survey respondents, not realized outcomes. |
| NVIDIA, 2024 State of AI in Retail and CPG survey report | 39% for stockout and inventory management; 35% for loss prevention and asset protection; 21% for autonomous checkout | Survey use-case figures, not measured effects on margins. |
The categories matter. Self-checkout exception detection, inventory management, traffic intelligence, and fully automated checkout solve different problems and involve different operational demands. A survey share for one category cannot be used to predict adoption or returns in another.
Is automated checkout the best way to use vision AI?
Not necessarily. IDC described automated checkout as “the toughest use case to justify and deploy,” contrasting it with narrower applications such as self-checkout shrink reduction and curbside arrival detection. That is a statement about the relative difficulty of the use case, not a claim that automated checkout cannot work.

A narrower system can target a specific exception while keeping existing checkout and staffing arrangements in place. UST’s case description, for example, discusses linking existing checkout CCTV with a POS workflow rather than replacing checkout hardware. Whether that approach is practical at a particular retailer depends on its installed cameras, transaction systems, store layout, and staff procedures.
Full automated checkout has a broader job: it must support a checkout experience with less or different staff intervention. The available evidence does not provide a universal cost comparison between that approach and exception detection. Retailers should compare the systems against the operational problem they need to solve, rather than assume that the most automated option will protect margins best.

Start with a defined store problem and test whether the system can fit the people and technology already involved in solving it. A useful evaluation checks both the detection capability and the chain of actions that follows an alert.
- Choose one use case. Define whether the goal is to flag checkout exceptions, improve stockout visibility, reduce queue delays, or address another specific task. Do not combine these into a single promise of “better margins.”
- Document the current baseline. Establish how the retailer currently measures the relevant issue, such as shrink, availability, or queue performance. Without a baseline, a before-and-after claim is difficult to interpret.
- Map integration needs. Identify the cameras and POS or other store systems involved, and determine whether the proposed workflow can use existing infrastructure. The UST example shows that CCTV-to-POS integration is one possible pattern, not a universal requirement or guarantee of compatibility.
- Define the alert response. Specify who receives an alert, what information they need, and how they record the outcome. Include a process for uncertain events so a visual flag is not treated automatically as proof of wrongdoing.
- Assess the customer and staff experience. Consider whether interventions are timely and proportionate, whether alerts interrupt checkout, and whether the workflow adds a burden that staff cannot manage.
- Measure the result against the baseline. Separate confirmed events and operational outcomes from raw alert counts. Check whether measured changes can reasonably be attributed to the deployment, and account for deployment and operating costs before drawing a margin conclusion.
The point of this sequence is not to impose a single measurement method. It is to prevent an impressive detection count or a vendor case-study figure from standing in for a retailer-specific business result.

What does retail loss-prevention vision AI cost?
No general price, recurring fee, implementation cost, or typical payback period is established in the available evidence. The deployment examples concern installed camera infrastructure and integrated retail workflows, not a consumer camera that independently performs AI loss prevention.
For a retailer, the commercial scope may include an enterprise vision platform and implementation services. Actual cost will depend on the chosen use case and integration requirements; the reported outcome figures do not disclose a comparable total cost that would support a payback calculation. Ask a provider to itemize the costs and explain how each proposed result will be measured in the retailer’s own stores.

Vision AI is most defensible as a way to make specific store exceptions more visible and give staff a chance to act. Checkout alerts, shelf and stockout visibility, and traffic or queue intelligence are separate applications, each with its own workflow and measure of success.
Vendor and commissioned reports offer examples of claimed savings, but they do not establish a standard margin lift. A retailer should judge a proposal on its use case, integration, alert handling, customer and staff impact, and the credibility of the measurement—not on a headline percentage alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does retail loss-prevention AI need facial recognition?
The examples described here focus on checkout activity, transaction flow, imagery, and—in one disclosure—weight-based protection; they do not establish that facial recognition is required. Retailers should ask providers to specify what data the system uses and whether any identity-related capability is part of the proposed deployment.
Can a vision AI alert prove that a shopper stole something?
No. A visual or transaction mismatch is an indication that staff may need to review an event, not proof of intent. Store policies should distinguish an automated flag from a confirmed incident.
How can a retailer tell whether a vendor’s savings claim applies to its stores?
Ask for the measurement period, baseline, store population, calculation method, and whether results were independently verified. If those details are not available, treat the figure as an example of one deployment rather than a forecast for your chain.
