There is no universal screenshot shortcut for every virtual machine. Choose the result you need first: a direct image of the guest display, a screenshot handled by the guest operating system, or a picture of the VM window as your host computer shows it. VirtualBox can write the guest display directly to a PNG on the host; Hyper-V VMConnect uses CTRL+C; VMware Fusion can send Print Scrn to a Windows guest and place the image on its clipboard; and Google Compute Engine offers a console screenshot for a running instance. The correct method also depends on display count, keyboard focus, guest clipboard support, and whether the VM is local or in the cloud.
Which virtual-machine screenshot method should you use?
Use the method that matches both the part of the screen you want and where you need the result delivered. A guest-display capture is usually the cleanest image; a host screenshot is the most universal but can include window borders and host controls.

| Goal | Method | What is captured | Where the result goes | Important requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Save the VM display as an image on the host | VirtualBox VBoxManage controlvm ... screenshotpng |
Guest display | PNG at the host path you specify | Run the command on the host; select the intended display when more than one is configured |
| Capture a Hyper-V console | Press CTRL+C in VMConnect |
VMConnect screen | Handled by VMConnect according to the host version | The VMConnect window must have keyboard focus |
| Let a Windows guest handle Print Screen | VMware Fusion: Virtual Machine > Send Key > Print Scrn | Guest OS output | Windows guest clipboard | Paste into an image-capable guest application and save |
| Capture a remote console for diagnosis | Google Cloud console, gcloud compute instances get-screenshot, or instances.getScreenshot |
Compute Engine instance console | Cloud console, command output, or API response | Instance must be RUNNING; a virtual display must be enabled for the console view |
| Show the VM together with visible host controls | Host operating-system screenshot tool | Physical screen, including the VM window | Host screenshot location | Anything visible outside the guest can appear in the image |
How do I take a screenshot in VirtualBox?
VirtualBox’s host-side screenshotpng action saves the guest display directly as a PNG, so you do not need a screenshot application inside the guest.
Run the command on the host
- Open a terminal or command prompt on the physical computer that runs VirtualBox. Do not run this command inside the guest unless VirtualBox’s command-line tools are installed there and can reach the host-managed VM.
- Use the VM’s exact name and a destination that the host can write. The documented form is
VBoxManage controlvm "VM name" screenshotpng "/path/to/screenshot.png". - Replace
VM namewith the registered virtual-machine name and change the output path to a real folder. Keep quotation marks around names or paths containing spaces. - Open the resulting PNG on the host. The file is produced at the path in the command; it is not placed in the guest’s Pictures folder.
Selecting a display
The command supports a display selector. For a single-monitor guest, the display number is 0. If the VM exposes several virtual monitors, use the syntax documented for the VirtualBox release installed on the host and choose the display you intend to capture. A wrong selector can produce the wrong monitor even though the command itself succeeds.

When VirtualBox reports an error
- Check that the command is running on the host and that the VM name matches the registered name exactly.
- Confirm that the destination directory exists and that your host account has permission to create the PNG there.
- Review the manual for the installed VirtualBox release if its display-selector syntax differs from the basic form.
- If the output is from another monitor, repeat the command with the appropriate display number rather than cropping a different screen.
How do I capture a Hyper-V VM screen?
Microsoft documents CTRL+C in VMConnect as the screen-capture shortcut. The key combination acts on the VMConnect window, not on an arbitrary application running in the guest.
- Open the virtual machine through VMConnect.
- Click inside the VMConnect window so it has keyboard focus. VMConnect normally sends keyboard input to the VM when its window is active.
- Press
CTRL+C. This invokes VMConnect’s documented screen-capture action. - Use the capture handling provided by your VMConnect and host version to locate or save the image. Microsoft’s shortcut documentation does not establish one universal destination path for every release, so do not assume that the file will appear in the guest or in a particular host folder.
The shortcut is documented for Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025; Windows 10 and 11; and Azure Local 2311.2 and later. If your host is outside those versions, check its current VMConnect documentation before troubleshooting the key combination.
If CTRL+C affects the host instead
Click the VMConnect display again and retry. A host application can receive the keystroke when VMConnect has lost focus. VMConnect also has mouse-release behavior that can return input to the host, so move the pointer back into the VM display before capturing.
How do I use Print Screen in VMware Fusion?
Fusion can send a normal Print Screen command to a Windows guest. Windows then handles the key and places the captured image on the guest clipboard; Fusion does not directly write a PNG to the Mac host through this workflow.
- Bring the Windows virtual machine to the foreground in VMware Fusion.
- From the Fusion menu bar, choose Virtual Machine > Send Key > Print Scrn.
- Inside Windows, open an application that accepts images, such as Paint or Word.
- Paste from the clipboard, inspect the image, and use that application’s save command to create a file in the guest.
If you need the file on the Mac, move it out of the guest after saving, using your normal shared-folder, drag-and-drop, or other file-transfer workflow. The important distinction is that the first destination is the Windows clipboard, not a host folder.

How do I capture a Google Cloud virtual machine?
Google Compute Engine provides a VM-console screenshot feature for a running instance. You can use the VM details page, the Google Cloud CLI, or the API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the Google Cloud console
- Open the Compute Engine VM details page for the instance.
- Select the Screenshot tab.
- Request the image while the instance is in the
RUNNINGstate. - If the console remains blank, verify that the instance has a virtual display enabled; the documented console view cannot show an image without one.
Use the CLI or API
The command-line route is gcloud compute instances get-screenshot. The programmatic equivalent is the instances.getScreenshot API method. Supply the instance and location parameters required by your current Google Cloud CLI or API client, and ensure the caller has the compute.instances.getScreenshot permission.
What this capture is useful for
A cloud-console screenshot can help diagnose a machine when normal remote access is unavailable, provided the instance is still running and has a virtual display. It captures the instance’s local console session rather than a generic image of the cloud dashboard.
How do I screenshot the VM window with the host computer?
A host screenshot tool is the fallback when you want exactly what is visible on the physical screen, including the VM window, borders, menus, or other host applications. It is not the same as a clean guest-display capture.
On a Mac host, Broadcom documents Command+Shift+3 for a full-screen capture saved to the Mac desktop. Depending on whether the VM is windowed or full-screen, the image can include the Mac menu bar, Fusion controls, window borders, notifications, or another application behind the VM. Use a region or window capture when your host tool offers one, or crop the finished image while checking that no sensitive material remains.

What is the difference between a guest screenshot, host screenshot and VM snapshot?
These operations preserve different things. A screenshot is a still image; a snapshot or checkpoint preserves virtual-machine state so you can return to an earlier point.
| Operation | Preserves | Typical output | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest-display screenshot | Pixels rendered by the virtual display | PNG or another image file | Documentation, bug reports and visual records |
| Guest OS screenshot | What the guest’s screenshot facility places on its clipboard or saves | Clipboard image, then a file after pasting | Capturing content through the guest’s own tools |
| Host screenshot | Everything visible on the physical computer’s screen | Host image file | Showing the VM together with host UI or controls |
| VM snapshot or Hyper-V checkpoint | Machine state for later restoration | Virtual-disk, memory or configuration state managed by the hypervisor | Rollback, troubleshooting and recovery |
VirtualBox documents snapshots as a way to return a VM to an earlier state. Microsoft treats a Hyper-V checkpoint as a separate action from VMConnect’s screen-capture shortcut. Neither operation creates a still image that can be pasted into a document.
Why is my virtual-machine screenshot not working?
Most failures come from choosing a capture layer that does not match the desired result, losing keyboard focus, or overlooking a display or permission requirement.
The shortcut goes to the host
Click inside the VM window and confirm that the hypervisor has focus before pressing a guest or VMConnect shortcut. If the host still receives the key, use the hypervisor’s explicit menu command or direct capture function instead of relying on pass-through keyboard input.

The image is on a clipboard, but I cannot find a file
A clipboard capture is not automatically a saved image. In Fusion, open Paint, Word, or another image-capable application inside the Windows guest, paste, and save. Only after that step does a file exist, and it initially exists in the guest’s file system.

VirtualBox cannot find the VM or write the PNG
Run VBoxManage on the host, verify the exact VM name, and choose a writable destination. A path that exists only inside the guest is not a valid host output path. For multi-display VMs, confirm the display selector against the manual for the installed release.
Google Cloud shows no console image
Check all three documented prerequisites: the instance is RUNNING, a virtual display is enabled, and the caller has compute.instances.getScreenshot. A stopped instance or a console without a virtual display cannot provide the expected screenshot.
The capture contains menus, borders or another window
That is expected from a host screenshot because it records the physical screen. Switch to a direct guest-display method such as VirtualBox’s PNG command when your hypervisor supports one, or crop the host image and inspect the edges before sharing it.

How can you keep VM screenshots safe to share?
Review every screenshot before uploading it to a ticket, forum or cloud drive. A screen can reveal passwords, access tokens, private messages, customer records, browser tabs, host notifications or other content outside the VM.
Google cautions that its VM screenshot feature captures the local console session through a remote desktop client, which may include sensitive material from the user’s desktop or browser. Close unrelated windows, remove secrets from the visible console, and redact credentials or personal data before distribution. If a host screenshot includes the hypervisor’s menus or the host desktop, treat those areas as part of the captured data even when the guest itself looks harmless.

Which workflow is the quickest for common tasks?
- Need a clean VirtualBox image on the host: use
VBoxManage controlvm ... screenshotpngand select display0for a single-monitor guest. - Need a Hyper-V console capture: focus VMConnect and press
CTRL+C, then follow the capture behavior for that host release. - Need a Windows screenshot in Fusion: send Print Scrn, paste inside Windows, and save from the guest application.
- Need evidence from an inaccessible Google Cloud desktop: use the VM details page’s Screenshot tab or the documented CLI/API, provided the instance is running and has a virtual display.
- Need to show host controls or the whole desktop: use the host screenshot tool, then crop and redact the result.
How we separated the methods
The methods above are grouped by three practical criteria: what they capture, where the image is delivered, and which platform conditions must be met. The official procedures differ substantially: VirtualBox writes a host-side PNG, Fusion hands the image to the guest clipboard, VMConnect uses its own capture action, and Google Cloud requires a running instance with a virtual display. Treating those as interchangeable shortcuts is the main cause of unexpected output.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a Google Cloud VM when remote desktop is unavailable?
Yes, the Compute Engine console screenshot is intended for the instance console and does not require a successful interactive desktop session. The instance still has to be running, a virtual display must be enabled, and the requesting identity needs the screenshot permission.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy did Fusion not create an image file on my Mac?
The Send Key workflow targets the Windows guest. Print Screen places the image on the guest clipboard, so you must paste and save it in a Windows application before transferring the resulting file to the host.
How do I capture one monitor from a multi-display VirtualBox VM?
Use the display selector supported by the VirtualBox version installed on the host. Display number 0 is the single-monitor case; with several displays, select the monitor you need instead of capturing and cropping an unintended display.
Will a host screenshot prove what the guest rendered?
It proves what was visible on the physical screen at capture time, but it may also contain host menus, borders, notifications or other windows. For evidence focused solely on guest pixels, prefer a direct guest-display capture when the hypervisor provides one.
What should I remove before sharing a VM screenshot?
Inspect both the guest and the surrounding host interface for passwords, tokens, private messages, customer data, browser tabs and notifications. Crop or redact those areas, especially when using a cloud-console or full-host capture.
