Steam’s enduring appeal comes from behaving less like a checkout page and more like a persistent online world. Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek has described Gabe Newell’s guiding idea as “Steam is an MMO”: users build an account identity, gain levels, collect digital items, customize profiles, communicate with friends and creators, and carry that history across a large catalog of games. That interpretation, reported by GamesRadar+, is Faliszek’s recollection of Newell’s view—not a newly recorded direct quote from Newell.
What does Gabe Newell mean by saying Steam is an MMO?
The MMO comparison describes Steam’s platform layer, not a claim that the store is itself a multiplayer role-playing game. An account accumulates progression and social value over time, so leaving Steam would mean leaving behind more than a list of purchases.

Progression that belongs to the account
Steam users can raise account levels, display profile decorations, earn and show awards, collect trading cards, give items to other users, and curate a public profile. Reviews, guides, screenshots, videos, discussions and forums add more ways to establish a visible identity. Those features turn routine shopping and play into a continuing record of participation.
A social graph that crosses individual games
Friends, groups and community activity remain available while users move between unrelated titles. A player may discover a game through a friend’s review, a guide, a screenshot or a discussion, then return later for a different game without rebuilding a social network from scratch. The account is the constant world; the games are destinations inside it.

Why does Steam’s community keep people coming back?
Former GameStop Impulse executive and later Nightdive chief Larry Kuperman told GamesRadar+ that Steam’s key achievement was creating a community that brought people back because it was Steam. In that view, the network itself—not only a discount or an individual release—became a competitive moat.
Community activity also creates discovery. User reviews, guides, screenshots, videos and forums help a prospective buyer judge an unfamiliar game, while friends’ libraries and activity provide additional recommendations. Each contribution can make the service more useful for the next visitor, reinforcing the reason to return.
How did Steam grow beyond a game store?
Kuperman described Steam’s evolution from a tool associated with Counter-Strike into a broad ecosystem. Most games on the service come from outside Valve, so the catalog’s breadth is not limited to the company’s own releases.
Low distribution barriers expand the catalog
Valve’s Steam Direct program gives developers a comparatively straightforward route to distribution. Steamworks documentation states that a developer pays a $100 USD (or equivalent) fee for each new app submitted for distribution. The fee is a per-app payment; it is not evidence that every submission will succeed or that every game receives equal visibility.

A larger catalog increases the odds that a user’s niche interest is represented. More creators bring more games, more games attract more users, and a larger audience gives creators a stronger reason to publish there. This is a network effect rather than a single feature that can be credited with causing Steam’s popularity.
Why can service value beat a bare price advantage?
In a PC Gamer interview, Gabe Newell argued that ongoing service value can make legitimate purchasing more attractive than piracy. His explanation emphasized practical benefits such as localization, broad access across computers or platforms, and a positive customer experience.

How does Steam compare with the Epic Games Store’s model?
Both stores distribute PC games, but Steam’s mature identity and community systems make the services feel different. The comparison below describes the dimensions highlighted by the reporting, not a current market-share ranking.

| Dimension | Steam | Epic Games Store |
|---|---|---|
| Account identity | Levels, profiles, decorations, trading cards, gifts and awards, plus reviews, guides, screenshots, videos and forums. | Comparable creation and community tools have been described by Faliszek as requiring more effort to build out. |
| Community stickiness | Friends and community activity give users reasons to return even when they are not buying a specific game. | The reporting does not establish an equivalent level of cross-catalog community attachment. |
| Catalog and creator access | A broad third-party catalog supported by Steam Direct’s $100-per-app fee. | The cited material does not provide a directly comparable distribution-fee figure. |
| Service proposition | Newell’s argument centers on localization, access across computers or platforms and customer experience. | The cited material does not establish a matching service-value claim. |
| Governance cost | Faliszek says Steam’s community moderation needs improvement. | The cited material does not provide a directly comparable moderation assessment. |
This does not prove that one store is universally better. It explains why Steam can feel harder to replace for users who value an established profile, friends list and accumulated collection.
What are Steam levels and trading cards for?
Steam levels provide visible account progression. Trading cards are digital items associated with participating games; users can collect, trade and display them, and related profile elements contribute to the service’s self-expression layer. Their importance is social and cosmetic rather than a requirement for playing a game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because these items and profile choices persist at the account level, they support the MMO metaphor: activity in one game can add to an identity that remains present when the user moves to another.
What are the limits of the MMO strategy?
A persistent community creates moderation and governance obligations. Faliszek explicitly said Steam’s moderation needs improvement, showing the trade-off in building a large social layer: more user expression also means more spam, harassment, disputes and content that must be managed.

The available reporting supports a qualitative explanation of Steam’s staying power. It does not establish a current user total, a current market-share percentage or proof that any single feature created the service’s dominance. A Washington Post report cited 65 million Steam users in January 2014; that historical figure should not be presented as a current count.
So what is the secret to Steam’s popularity?
The most defensible answer is platform identity combined with network effects. Valve made the account itself useful: it stores progression, relationships, recommendations, creations and digital collectibles while opening access to a large third-party ecosystem. That persistent layer gives users reasons to return for the service, not merely for the next sale or exclusive release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Steam more than a game store?
Yes. Its account profiles, friends network, reviews, guides, forums, screenshots, videos, levels and digital collectibles form a social platform around the catalog. Those features remain relevant across multiple games rather than belonging to one title.
Why do people stay on Steam instead of switching stores?
Switching can mean leaving behind an established friends list, profile history, reviews, achievements, collectibles and community connections. The reporting describes that accumulated identity as a source of stickiness, although it does not prove that every user makes decisions for the same reason.

Are Steam trading cards physical collectibles?
No. The cards discussed in this context are digital items tied to games and Steam accounts. They support collecting, trading and profile customization inside the service.
Does Steam Direct guarantee a game will be accepted or discovered?
No. Valve’s documentation sets a $100 USD (or equivalent) fee for each new app, but payment alone does not guarantee approval, prominence in the store or sales. Visibility still depends on the game, its audience and Steam’s discovery systems.
