Upgrade Maximum Health first, then Ammo Restock, Maximum Endurance, Maximum Nephtoglobin, and finally Transmutation Damage. That order gives a Pistol build the survivability, ammunition, stamina, and resource capacity it needs before chasing damage. On the weapon itself, the strongest general-purpose route is Ruthlessness → Robust Chamber → Tactical Reload. Choose Ingenious Engineering instead when you are deliberately building around Ignite, and use the Pistol with a Rapier when your goal is posture breaks and critical attacks.

Which global skills should you upgrade first?
Spend global Catalysts on survivability and the firearm economy before pure firearm damage. The practical order is Maximum Health, Ammo Restock, Maximum Endurance, Maximum Nephtoglobin, and Transmutation Damage.
1. Maximum Health
Maximum Health is the safest first purchase because it benefits every encounter, including fights where the Pistol is not the main source of damage. More health gives you additional tolerance for a mistimed parry, an incorrect weak-point read, a failed dodge, or a hit taken while reloading. Those extra opportunities matter more early than a small increase to a weapon you cannot yet sustain.

2. Ammo Restock
Ammo Restock comes next because the Pistol’s value depends on being available when a weak point, airborne target, posture window, or combo opening appears. Without an ammunition cushion, the firearm turns into a weapon you are forced to save instead of one you can integrate into your combat loop.
3. Maximum Endurance
Maximum Endurance protects the movement side of a Pistol build. Aiming, firing, repositioning, and then dodging all compete for time and stamina. More endurance helps prevent the common failure where William spends the stamina needed to escape because he committed to a shot or a reposition.
4. Maximum Nephtoglobin
After health, ammunition, and stamina are stable, increase Maximum Nephtoglobin. The larger pool supports special ammunition and gives Transmutation effects more room to operate. It is a resource-capacity upgrade rather than an immediate damage spike, so it pays off most when you are already using those systems consistently.
5. Transmutation Damage
Take Transmutation Damage after the core economy is established. It improves a damage plan that depends on status or elemental interactions, but it does not solve the early problems of surviving mistakes, maintaining ammunition, or having stamina available to dodge. For most first runs, it is a better fifth investment than an early pure-firearm damage node.
Why should Maximum Firearm Damage wait?
Maximum Firearm Damage is not the best first Catalyst purchase for a Pistol-centered setup. The current firearm guidance places health, ammunition, endurance, resource capacity, and Transmutation support ahead of pure firearm damage; Maximum Firearm Damage, Headshot Damage, Ammunition Drop Chance, and similar damage or utility nodes are weaker early purchases.
That does not make firearm damage useless. It becomes more attractive after your basic economy is working and you can afford to fire the Pistol regularly. Until then, a damage node raises the output of a weapon whose five-round magazine and four-second reload already limit how often it can contribute.

The Pistol is best treated as a precision sidearm that creates openings rather than as a permanent primary damage source. MetaBot.GG’s 2026 game-data page lists a five-round magazine, a 0.25-second interval between shots, and a four-second reload. That profile favors deliberate shots at weak points, airborne enemies, posture setup, and specific combo windows.
The same page describes the Pistol as a sidearm suited to destroying Nephtoglobin weak spots. Its level-one damage is listed as 30 and its level-10 damage as 60, a 100% increase before multipliers. Those figures show why weapon upgrades matter, but they do not remove the magazine and reload constraints.

What is the best Pistol path for an Ignite build?
For Ignite, take Ingenious Engineering and Tactical Reload instead of following the generalist sequence automatically. Pair the Pistol with Fire-Clad Rounds and the Saber upgrade Flaming Whetstone so both weapons can apply Ignite.

Then invest in Fire Transmutation’s Unstable Blaze. A shot against an ignited target consumes the Ignite effect and triggers area damage. The loop is therefore deliberate: apply Ignite with the Saber or Pistol, wait for a useful target grouping or opening, and fire to convert the status into the explosion. Do not select Ingenious Engineering merely because you intend to use a few fire rounds. How do I make a Pistol and Rapier posture-break build?

That is 16 parts in total. One Masterwork Firearm Part cannot be bought and must be found in the world, so reaching the final level depends on exploration as well as currency or shop access.
Should you upgrade several guns at once?
No, not if the Pistol is your chosen firearm. Firearm materials are limited enough that partially upgrading the Pistol, Blunderbuss, and Musket at the same time delays the level and branch benefits of all three. Commit the available parts to the Pistol first, take it toward maximum level, and only then fund another gun if your build genuinely needs one.

Use the changeable nature of branches to refine a build after you understand whether you prefer general reliability, Ignite explosions, or posture criticals. It is not a reason to split materials among multiple guns or to delay the Pistol’s core levels.
Which Ambers support a Pistol build?
Ambers are passive bonuses equipped through Lanterns, with additional slots opening every ten levels. Documented Pistol-relevant examples include Lucky Shot, Sleight of Hand, Volatile End, and Marksman’s Bane.
