Yes. Claude for Google Workspace can work inside the Google Doc, Sheet, or Slides file you already have open. Install the extension from Google Workspace Marketplace, sign in through the sidebar, then ask Claude to draft, rewrite, analyze, clean, or restructure content. It can edit the current file directly, with an “Ask before edits” review mode and normal Google version history for recovery. The beta is available to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers when Google Workspace Marketplace access and administrator policy allow it.
This guide explains setup, app-specific prompts, approval controls, connector scope, privacy, limitations, and fixes for common failures. The same installation covers Docs, Sheets, and Slides; you do not install three separate extensions.

What can Claude do inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides?
Claude for Google Workspace adds a Claude sidebar to the three Google applications. It reads the file that is open in the current app and can make edits in that file. The sidebar is therefore an in-file assistant, not a general-purpose Drive search window.
- Docs: draft, rewrite, summarize, restructure, check consistency, and turn prose into tables.
- Sheets: explain and repair formulas, build models, normalize data, create sensitivity analyses, and analyze selected ranges.
- Slides: draft slides, split dense slides, standardize titles, restyle a deck, and add visual summaries.
The beta requires a Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan. An administrator can restrict Marketplace apps or Claude features, so an eligible subscription alone does not guarantee that your account can install it.

How do I install Claude for Google Workspace?
Install once from Google Workspace Marketplace, approve Google’s requested permissions, and then open Claude from the Extensions menu in any supported Google file.
- Open the Claude listing in Google Workspace Marketplace and select Install.
- Choose the Google account you use for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, then continue.
- Read Google’s permission screen and approve the requested access. The extension needs to display third-party web content in Google applications and to view and manage the file in which it is installed.
- Reload any Docs, Sheets, or Slides files that were already open when you installed the extension.
- Open a file and choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
- Sign in to Claude in the sidebar.
- If your organization has approved connectors, enable the ones you need. Connector access is separate from the basic in-file sidebar.
- Start with a concrete request, such as a summary, formula explanation, rewrite, data cleanup, or slide draft.
Chrome, Edge, and Safari are supported in this beta. Firefox is not supported. If the Claude entry is missing from Extensions, your administrator may have blocked the Marketplace app, the installation may not have completed, or the file may need a reload.

How do I use Claude in Google Docs?
Select the passage or section that matters, describe the desired outcome and constraints, and keep the sidebar open while Claude works. Selecting text gives Claude a narrower context and makes the proposed edit easier to review.
Rewrite and tighten existing text
Highlight the paragraph or section, open the sidebar, and try: Rewrite the executive summary so it leads with the recommendation and fits in one paragraph. State the audience, tone, length, and facts that must not change. Claude can draft a replacement or apply the edit after you approve it.
Turn notes into a structured table
Select the notes under a heading and ask: Turn the notes under “Next steps” into a table with owner, action, and due date. Check that names, dates, and ownership were preserved before accepting the table.
Check contracts and defined terms
Ask: Check this contract for defined terms that are used but never defined. List each term and the section where it appears. Treat the result as a review aid, not legal advice; verify every finding against the source language.

A practical cleanup prompt is: Make every heading sentence case and fix the numbering in section 4. Do not change the wording of body paragraphs. Limiting the scope helps prevent accidental rewriting elsewhere in the document.
What Docs cannot do
- Claude cannot read, reply to, or resolve existing Google Docs comments.
- It cannot accept or reject existing Google suggestion-mode changes.
- Its edits are direct file edits rather than Google suggestions.
For sensitive documents, ask Claude to describe proposed changes before applying them, then inspect the document itself after approval.
How do I use Claude in Google Sheets?
Select the relevant cells or name a range in your prompt, explain the desired output, and ask Claude to show its reasoning or assumptions. It can write and repair formulas, clean inconsistent data, build models, and analyze spreadsheet content.

Explain a total and find hardcoded values
Select the area around the result and ask: Walk me through how the total in H42 is calculated and flag anything hardcoded. Confirm that the referenced cells and assumptions match your model before changing anything.

Build a three-statement model
Ask: Build a three-statement model on a new tab from the assumptions in “Inputs”. Label assumptions, link statements with formulas, and list any missing inputs. Review the new tab for circular references, sign conventions, and unsupported assumptions.
Normalize dates
For a mixed-format date column, use: Column D has dates in three different formats. Normalize them to YYYY-MM-DD and flag values that cannot be parsed. Keep a copy of the original column until you have checked the converted values.
Repair lookup errors
Try: Find why the VLOOKUP in the Summary tab returns #N/A for some rows and fix it. Explain whether the issue is spacing, data type, range, or missing key. Test the corrected formula with both a known match and a known non-match.
Create sensitivity analysis and charts
Ask: Add a sensitivity table for price and volume, plus a chart of revenue by quarter. Specify which cells contain price, volume, and revenue if the sheet has several similar ranges. Check that the chart uses the intended series and periods.
Spreadsheet limits to plan around
- Connected Sheets tabs backed by BigQuery cannot be read or edited. Extract the data into a regular tab first.
- Claude cannot create triggers, custom menus, or scheduled refreshes.
- Large jobs are safer when split into stages: inspect, transform, validate, then format.
The separate Claude for Sheets extension is a different workflow. It runs Claude interactions in cells and requires an Anthropic API key in addition to its Marketplace installation; installing the Workspace sidebar does not provide that cell-based feature.
How do I use Claude in Google Slides?
Open the deck, select the slide or relevant content, and describe the audience and visual result you want. Refer to slide numbers, speaker notes, layout, and brand constraints so Claude can work within the existing deck.
Draft a project-update deck
Ask: Draft a five-slide project update from the bullet points in the speaker notes on slide 1. Include status, milestones, risks, decisions, and next steps. Review the narrative order and confirm that dates and owners came from the notes.
Split a text-heavy slide
Use: Slide 7 is a wall of text. Split it into two slides, preserve the deck’s styling, and keep each title under eight words. Check text size and reading order in presentation mode.

Standardize titles
Prompt: Make the titles across the deck parallel and under eight words each. Keep the meaning and do not alter speaker notes. This is useful for consistency, but inspect acronyms and proper names after the rewrite.
Add a chart or restyle a deck
For a visual summary, ask: Add a bar chart of the regional numbers on slide 4, matching the deck’s colors. For a broader redesign, ask: Restyle this deck to use the fonts and colors from the title slide.
Charts Claude creates in Slides are inserted as images. They are not linked Sheets charts, so they do not update automatically when the source numbers change. Existing linked charts still require manual updates in Google Slides.
What is the safest way to review Claude’s edits?
The default control is Ask before edits: Claude describes a proposed change and waits for approval. Use that mode when accuracy matters or when you are working in a file received from outside your organization.
Choose an approval mode
- Ask before edits: review each proposed operation before it changes the file.
- Accept all edits: approve ordinary content edits automatically during a task.
Even with Accept all edits, Claude pauses for links, external images, web addresses, and access-related actions. Those interruptions are intentional safeguards.
Recover from an unwanted change
- Use Undo for the latest change while the file is open.
- For an earlier state, open File > Version history and restore the appropriate version.
- Confirm the restored formulas, formatting, links, and permissions before continuing.
Claude’s edits appear in the file’s normal version history under your name. Keep the sidebar open while a task runs; closing it stops the current task. A single long operation can run for up to six minutes, so divide very large jobs into smaller stages.
Can Claude search my other Google Drive files?
Not through the ordinary Workspace sidebar. By default, it sees the open file and any content you selected; it does not automatically search other Drive files, Gmail, or Calendar.
Google Workspace connectors are a separate path. They allow Claude to search connected Drive, Gmail, and Calendar services and edit Docs, Sheets, and Slides live in a pane beside the chat. Connector authentication, organization approval, and available services determine what can be found.
When using a connector, name the file type explicitly: ask for a Google Doc, Google Sheet, or Google Slides deck. A generic request for a “document” can produce a local file instead of the Google file you intended.

What is the difference between the Workspace sidebar and connectors?
The sidebar is best for focused work in one open file; connectors are for searching approved services and then working with Google files from a broader chat context.

Choose the narrowest scope that completes the job. If you already know which file needs work, opening it and using the sidebar is usually simpler and easier to audit.
What permissions and privacy controls apply?
The extension requests permission to display third-party web content in Google applications and to view and manage the file where it is installed. It does not request broad access to all Drive files, Gmail, Calendar, contacts, or arbitrary network resources for the basic sidebar.
Anthropic states that content is handled under the applicable Claude terms, is not used to train its models, and that inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic systems within 30 days except where the applicable terms describe otherwise. Your organization’s Claude settings, Google Workspace policy, retention rules, and administrator controls can add requirements.
- Ask your Workspace administrator whether the Marketplace app and connectors are allowlisted.
- Use a test copy for confidential or externally supplied files before approving broad changes.
- Do not paste secrets into prompts unless your organization’s policy permits it.
- Review proposed links, images, access requests, formulas, and external references manually.
- Use version history so a reviewer can identify and reverse changes.
Document content is treated as data rather than commands. Claude is designed not to follow hidden instructions that tell it to share a file, fetch a link, or contact someone, but you should still inspect every proposed action.

The Claude menu is missing
- Confirm that you installed the Marketplace extension with the same Google account that owns or edits the file.
- Reload the file and check Extensions > Claude again.
- Ask an administrator whether Marketplace applications are blocked.
- Use Chrome, Edge, or Safari rather than Firefox for this beta.
Claude cannot find another file
Open the target file directly or use an approved connector. The basic sidebar does not search arbitrary Drive files, Gmail, or Calendar.

Keep the sidebar open and divide the work into smaller requests. A single operation can run for up to six minutes; a staged workflow is more reliable for long documents, large ranges, and deck-wide formatting.
A Sheet is unavailable
Check whether the data is in a Connected Sheets tab backed by BigQuery. Claude cannot read or edit that tab; extract the data to a normal Sheet tab and run the task there.

A Slides chart is stale
Charts generated by Claude are images, so changing the source numbers will not update them. Recreate the image or replace it with a manually maintained linked chart when ongoing updates are required.
Comments or suggestions were ignored
Claude cannot resolve existing comments or accept and reject existing suggestions. Copy the relevant feedback into the selected text or ask a human reviewer to handle the comment thread.

Good prompts identify the location, operation, constraints, and verification step. A reusable pattern is: In [file, sheet, slide, range or heading], [perform the task]. Preserve [facts, formulas, style or links]. Return [format], and flag [uncertainties or missing inputs] before editing.
- Scope: name a sheet tab, range, slide number, heading, or selected passage.
- Outcome: say whether you want an explanation, draft, formula, table, chart, or direct edit.
- Constraints: include word limits, date formats, title length, colors, audience, or unchanged content.
- Validation: ask Claude to list assumptions, flag unparsed values, or identify hardcoded cells.
- Staging: ask it to inspect first, then make changes after you review the plan.
For repeated work, save a short prompt template in your team documentation and require a human check of formulas, legal language, numbers, and externally sourced material.
Is Claude for Google Workspace worth using?
It is most useful when the work is already in one open Google file and you want a conversational way to transform that content without copying it into another application. The strongest use cases are targeted rewrites in Docs, explain-and-fix tasks in Sheets, and structured drafting or restyling in Slides.
It is a poor fit when you need automatic Drive-wide discovery through the basic sidebar, edits to Connected Sheets, scheduled spreadsheet automation, comment resolution, live-linked charts created by Claude, Firefox support, or unattended jobs longer than one run. In those situations, use an approved connector, normal Google features, a separate automation system, or a human review process that matches your governance requirements.

Can I install the extension for more than one Google account?
Yes, but each account must complete its own Marketplace installation and Claude sign-in, and an organization can restrict which accounts may use the app. If the sidebar opens under the wrong identity, sign out and reinstall or switch the active Google profile before opening the file.
Does Claude work when I am offline?
No offline workflow is described for this beta. The sidebar depends on the Google application, Claude authentication, and the extension’s web service, so plan to work while the browser session and network connection remain available.
How should an administrator roll this out to a team?
Start with a small pilot, confirm Marketplace allowlisting, define which Claude plans and connectors are permitted, and document how reviewers use version history. Test representative Docs, Sheets, and Slides files before enabling broader access.
Can I keep a record of what Claude changed?
Yes. Changes are recorded in the file’s ordinary Google version history under the user’s name. Reviewers can compare versions there even after the sidebar session has ended.
