To avoid scams when buying a used PlayStation, pass three checks before paying: verify the seller and listing, verify the exact console works and can access PlayStation services, then pay through a method with meaningful buyer protection. A very low price is a warning sign, not proof of a bargain. Do not rely on a serial number, a seller’s assurances, or a marketplace name alone to establish that a console is legitimate and safe to buy.

Think of the purchase as three gates, not one quick check. A convincing seller profile does not prove the hardware works; a working console does not prove a payment is protected. If any gate fails—especially if the seller pressures you to skip checks or use an unusual payment route—pause or walk away.

How can I tell if a used PlayStation listing is a scam?

Look for a pattern of warning signs rather than treating one detail as proof. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s online shopping guidance puts the price risk plainly: “If the price is low, the risk is high. You often get what you pay for.” A suspiciously cheap listing becomes more concerning when the seller also pressures you, avoids questions, or resists ordinary checks.

Scams do not always look obviously fraudulent at first. A plausible description, a familiar marketplace, or a seller who answers one question does not establish that the pictured console is the one being shipped, that it works, or that you will have recourse if it does not arrive. Judge the whole transaction: the price, account history, evidence of the exact unit, willingness to let you verify it, and payment terms.

Check the seller and the listing

  • Compare the full price. Check listings for the same PlayStation model and edition, then account for shipping, taxes, and fees. A low headline price may not be the lowest total price, and a price far below comparable offers deserves extra scrutiny. Compare like with like: a digital-only console, a disc model, and bundles with different controllers or accessories are not identical offers.
  • Review the seller’s history. No reviews, mostly unfavorable reviews, or a very thin account history are reasons to be cautious. A profile is a clue, not a guarantee that the particular console is genuine or in the stated condition. Look at the seller’s history alongside the listing rather than treating a positive rating as a substitute for checking the item.
  • Look for photos of the actual unit. Stock images or pictures that omit the console’s serial-number area, ports, included controller, and cables make it harder to assess what is being sold. Ask for current photos if the listing does not clearly show the item. Photos can help you see what is offered, but they cannot establish that the console powers on or connects to services.
  • Notice pressure and inconsistent stories. Be wary of urgency paired with refusal to answer normal questions. An explanation that the seller is abroad or unexpectedly unavailable, especially when it conflicts with the listing’s location, is another warning sign identified by the FBI. You do not need to accept a rushed deadline as a reason to skip basic checks.
  • Do not accept a detour around the marketplace. A seller who asks to move payment or the conversation elsewhere, perhaps claiming platform fees make it necessary, is asking you to give up safeguards. The Federal Trade Commission advises: “Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.” If a marketplace’s protection is part of why you are comfortable buying, an off-platform transaction can defeat that reason.
  • Be cautious about missing details. A listing that does not identify the model, disc or digital configuration, included controller, cables, and accessories leaves room for a mismatch. Ask for specifics before comparing prices or committing. A seller who will not clarify what is included makes it difficult to judge whether the deal is actually a deal.

In its 2025 reporting, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) cited at least $503 million in losses in the non-payment and non-delivery category. That figure covers the cited category broadly; it is not an estimate of losses from used PlayStation scams specifically. It is a reminder to treat payment and delivery as real risks, not just to focus on whether the console looks plausible.

What should I check before buying a used PlayStation?

Identify the exact item, get evidence that this specific console works, and check its condition and service access before handing over money. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation buying guidance recommends asking for a video of the product in operation and inspecting it yourself when possible. The same checks matter whether you are looking at a PS5 or another used PlayStation: establish what is being sold, then test that unit rather than relying on a description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Confirm what the listing includes

Ask the seller to specify the console model and edition, including whether it has a disc drive or is digital-only. Confirm storage, the number and type of controllers, cables, and any claimed accessories. Compare the total price—including shipping, taxes, and fees—with offers for the same configuration; otherwise, a cheaper listing may simply include less.

Get the included items and the console’s condition stated clearly in the listing or messages. If a controller or cable is pictured but not included, or an accessory is promised only in conversation, resolve the mismatch before paying. This also gives you a record of what the seller represented if the delivered package differs.

2. Request a fresh video of the exact console

Ask for a new video showing the unit being sold, rather than a generic product clip. Sony recommends that the video show the console powering on, all ports and buttons, the disc drive where applicable, and an internet connection. If the seller will not provide this evidence or will not let you repeat the demonstrations in person, treat that as a reason to walk away rather than assume the unit is functional.

A useful video is evidence of operation, not just appearance. It should make clear that it is the specific console in the listing and show the requested checks rather than cut away before they happen. A still image of a home screen, an old clip, or a close-up of the exterior cannot establish that the ports, controls, drive, or internet connection work. If you cannot tell whether the clip shows the actual unit, ask for current proof or choose another listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Inspect and repeat the checks in person

If you can meet locally, inspect the console before payment and repeat the demonstrations shown in the video. Check image quality, watch for overheating, and look for unusual damage. Examine the warranty seals and serial-number area: a broken seal without a clear explanation, or a serial number that is missing or removed, is a warning sign.

Use the seller’s demonstration as a checklist, not as a reason to rush. Confirm the console powers on and produces an image, test the ports and buttons, and check the disc drive if the model has one. Observe whether it connects to the internet and whether there are signs of overheating during the inspection. Look over the housing for damage and compare the actual console and included items with the listing. If a problem appears, ask for an explanation and decide whether the price and terms still make sense; do not let the fact that you have already travelled or arranged the meeting pressure you into paying.

A serial number is one part of an inspection, not proof by itself that a console is clean or safe. Sony’s guidance also calls for checking PlayStation-service access and whether the console has been reported lost or stolen. A photo of a serial number may help you record what you inspected, but it does not independently confirm the console’s history.

4. Confirm PlayStation-service access and seller deactivation

Ask the seller to demonstrate that the console can connect to PlayStation services, and ask them to deactivate it so they no longer have access. Sony warns that “If a PlayStation product is reported lost or stolen, the product may be permanently suspended from accessing PlayStation services.” A successful check at the time of sale is useful, but it does not make a missing serial number or other warning signs irrelevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are separate questions: whether the console can connect now, whether it has been reported lost or stolen, and whether the seller has deactivated it. Do not treat a seller’s verbal assurance as a substitute for seeing the service connection and discussing deactivation. Nor should you assume that one successful connection guarantees the console will never have a service issue later. Sony’s warning is why service access belongs in the broader inspection, together with the seller, serial area, condition, and payment protections.

5. Save records before the listing disappears

Keep a copy of the listing and seller profile, messages, receipt, payment record, serial-number photos, and shipping or tracking information. These records help document what was promised and what happened if a dispute arises. Save them before the transaction is complete, not only after a problem appears.

For a remote purchase, retain the order and delivery details as well as the item description and any claims about condition or included accessories. For an in-person sale, save the seller’s profile and the messages arranging the meeting, and record the serial number if it is present. Do not assume a listing will remain available after the sale; having your own copies makes it easier to explain a dispute and meet a platform’s claim process.

Is it safe to buy a used PlayStation on Facebook Marketplace or another marketplace?

No marketplace name makes every used-console transaction safe. Protection depends on the specific seller, item, payment route, and platform rules; check that this transaction is covered and pay within the platform’s protected checkout if you rely on its dispute process.

Before paying remotely, read the current terms for buyer protection, refunds, returns, and claim deadlines. Confirm that used consoles and this particular seller or transaction qualify. If the seller requires an off-platform payment, the platform may not be able to offer its usual protection; the FTC specifically warns buyers not to pay outside a marketplace’s payment system.

Do not stop at a general statement that a marketplace offers buyer protection. Check the rules that apply to this specific purchase: whether a used console is eligible, whether this seller and payment method qualify, what situations are excluded, and how long you have to open a claim. Follow the platform’s payment and communication requirements if you want to rely on its process. The details can vary, so a marketplace that protected one transaction may not protect another in the same way.

A local sale and a remote protected purchase involve different trade-offs. Meeting in person may let you inspect the exact console before payment, but private-sale recourse may be limited or absent. A remote marketplace may provide a formal dispute process, but only if the transaction complies with its rules. Do not assume either route is protected without checking how it works for this purchase.

For a local sale, weigh the value of hands-on inspection against limited payment recourse. For a remote deal, weigh the convenience of shipping and a possible formal dispute process against the inability to test the console yourself before it arrives. In either case, verify the seller, the exact unit, the transaction terms, and the payment method rather than relying on the marketplace’s name as a safety guarantee.

What is the safest way to pay for a used PlayStation?

Prefer a credit card when possible, or the marketplace’s secure buyer-protected checkout after verifying the policy. The FTC says, “Paying by credit card best protects you and your money in case of a scam, or if something else goes wrong.” The protection that applies depends on the payment and transaction, so keep the receipt and follow the issuer’s or platform’s dispute process promptly if there is a problem.

Do not pay by wire transfer, prepaid gift card, or cryptocurrency at a seller’s insistence. The FTC also warns against sellers who insist on payment apps or other routes outside the marketplace; those methods can be difficult to reverse or may remove platform protections. A seller’s explanation that a different method is faster, cheaper, or required to avoid marketplace fees is not a reason to accept the risk.

“Use a payment app” is not, by itself, a safety recommendation. The important question is whether the transaction has meaningful recourse if the console does not arrive or is not as described. A credit card or qualifying in-platform checkout is preferable to a payment route chosen by the seller that bypasses the marketplace’s process. Before sending money, confirm the total and the payment terms, and do not send an extra payment through a separate channel because the seller says it is necessary.

Protection is not a promise of an automatic refund. Keep evidence and act promptly if something goes wrong; a card issuer and a marketplace each have their own procedures and deadlines. If the seller refuses the protected option and insists on a hard-to-reverse method, consider that a reason not to complete the sale.

Should I buy used, refurbished, or new?

A private used console may cost less, but you need to verify the unit and may have limited protection. A certified-refurbished or retailer-backed console may offer a stronger warranty and return position, though it can cost more than the cheapest private listing. For any route, check the warranty, return window, included accessories, condition grading, and the identity of the seller rather than relying on a label alone.

Buying path Main advantage Main trade-off What to verify
Private local sale You can inspect the exact console before handing over money. Protection may be limited or absent, depending on the arrangement. Condition, serial number, PlayStation-service access, seller deactivation, and payment recourse.
Remote marketplace with buyer protection A formal refund or dispute process may be available. Coverage, exclusions, deadlines, and payment rules vary by platform and seller. That this seller and used-console transaction are covered; keep payment inside the platform.
Certified-refurbished or retailer-backed console Warranty and return terms may be stronger than for an ordinary private sale. It usually costs more than the cheapest private listing. Warranty scope, return window, included accessories, condition grading, and seller identity.

Sony’s buying guidance states that “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty*.” Sony also says certified-refurbished products include a warranty. Check the specific product’s terms: the word “refurbished” by itself does not establish who refurbished it, what warranty applies, or what returns are allowed.

That warranty distinction matters when comparing the total value, not only the asking price. A cheaper private listing may leave you with little recourse if a fault appears, while a warranty-backed option may cost more but include a clearer return or repair route. Confirm the warranty provider, scope, and duration for the actual listing, along with the return window and what accessories are included. A retailer-backed or certified-refurbished label is useful only when the seller and terms are identifiable.

Buying new may make sense if you prioritize a new-unit condition and the seller’s stated warranty and returns over the savings of used hardware. Compare those terms against the actual used or refurbished offer rather than assuming every new, used, or refurbished listing has the same protections. The choice is a trade-off between price, condition certainty, warranty, and the ability to return the unit—not simply a ranking of labels.

What should I do if I think I have been scammed?

Act quickly, keep the evidence, and use the dispute route tied to your payment and purchase. Contact the seller and marketplace immediately, and check the marketplace’s claim deadline rather than waiting for the seller to resolve the issue informally.

  1. Preserve the record. Save the listing, seller profile, messages, receipt, payment confirmation, serial-number photos, and shipping or tracking information.
  2. Open the marketplace dispute. Follow the platform’s process and deadline if you paid through its checkout. Avoid moving the discussion or any refund payment outside the platform.
  3. Contact your card issuer promptly if you paid by card. Explain what was promised and what occurred, and ask about disputing the charge. The FTC and FBI identify contacting the card issuer as a recovery step.
  4. Report suspected fraud. The FTC accepts fraud reports, and internet crime can be reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

A report does not guarantee a refund. Keep following the payment provider’s and marketplace’s procedures, and retain copies of any case numbers and correspondence. If you discover a problem with the console after delivery, preserve the packaging and document the condition and issue as well as the original listing and communications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a photo of the serial number prove a used PlayStation is not stolen?

No. A photo can help you record and inspect the console’s serial number, but Sony’s guidance treats that as one part of a broader check that also includes service access and whether the product has been reported lost or stolen.

Is a screenshot of the home screen enough proof that the console works?

No. A screenshot does not show the exact unit powering on, its ports and buttons, a disc drive where relevant, or internet connectivity. Ask for a current video of the console itself and repeat the checks before paying if you can inspect it in person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I rely on the word “refurbished” in a listing?

Not by itself. Confirm who is selling the console and get the warranty, return window, included accessories, and condition grading in writing; those terms determine what backing the particular listing actually offers.

How do I know a used PS5 is not stolen or banned?

You cannot establish that from a serial-number photo or the seller’s assurance alone. Check the serial-number area, ask the seller to demonstrate PlayStation-service access, and ask whether the product has been reported lost or stolen. Sony warns that a reported lost or stolen PlayStation product may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Treat these as parts of a broader check, not an absolute guarantee about the console’s history.

What should I check before buying a used PlayStation?

Confirm the exact model and edition, disc or digital configuration, storage, controller, cables, and accessories. Request a fresh video of the exact console powering on and showing its ports, buttons, disc drive if applicable, and internet connection. If meeting in person, repeat the checks and inspect image quality, overheating, damage, seals, and serial number. Also confirm service access, seller deactivation, and the payment and return terms.

Is it safe to buy a used PS5 on Facebook Marketplace or another marketplace?

A platform name alone does not make a transaction safe. Check whether its current buyer-protection rules cover this seller, used console, payment method, and transaction, and note the claim deadline. Keep payment inside the platform if you are relying on its protection; an off-platform request can remove those safeguards.

What is the safest way to pay for a used PlayStation?

Prefer a credit card when possible or a marketplace’s protected checkout after checking its terms. Avoid a seller’s demand for wire transfer, prepaid gift card, cryptocurrency, or off-platform payment. Keep the receipt and transaction records, and contact the issuer or marketplace promptly if a problem occurs.

Should I buy used, refurbished, or new?

A private used console may cost less but can offer limited protection. Certified-refurbished or retailer-backed options may include a warranty and clearer return terms, usually at a higher price. Compare the actual seller, warranty scope, return window, accessories, condition grading, and total cost rather than relying on the label.

What should I do if the seller asks me to pay outside the marketplace?

Do not proceed on the seller’s preferred route simply because they cite fees or convenience. The FTC advises against paying outside a marketplace’s payment system; doing so can remove platform protection. Use a protected option whose terms cover the purchase, or walk away.

The Bottom Line

Before you pay, verify the seller and full listing, test the exact console and its PlayStation-service access, and use a credit card or qualifying marketplace checkout. If the seller blocks those checks, pressures you, or demands an irreversible or off-platform payment, walk away. A low price is not worth losing the console, the money, or your chance to dispute the transaction.
