Yes—you can build a useful Monte Carlo fantasy-football lineup simulator that runs entirely in the browser. The page can call Sleeper’s read-only endpoints directly, load league scoring and roster data, join player IDs to metadata, sample your own player-outcome model, and render the results without a server or API key. The important limits are methodological and operational: Sleeper supplies league and matchup data, not projections or probability distributions; your JavaScript must define those assumptions, keep requests below Sleeper’s general guidance of 1,000 calls per minute, and treat browser CORS behavior as something to verify before release.
What does a zero-backend Sleeper simulator actually do?
A client-side simulator has three separate jobs. First, it retrieves the public inputs that define a fantasy lineup: league scoring, roster slots, roster player IDs, and optional weekly matchup context. Second, it transforms those responses into typed local records and repeatedly samples possible player outcomes. Third, it scores legal lineups and displays a distribution rather than pretending one projected score is certain.

The browser performs all three jobs after the user enters a league ID. No database, scheduled worker, secret key, or server-side calculation is required for the basic tool. A backend remains useful for caching, scheduled data collection, and stricter traffic control, but it is an optional architecture rather than a prerequisite.
Can I call Sleeper directly from a browser without an API key?
Sleeper documents a read-only HTTP API that is free for non-commercial use and requires no API token because the API cannot modify league contents. That makes direct browser requests technically plausible. An independent implementation reference has observed Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *, which permits a direct request from a web page, but CORS headers can change; verify them against the live endpoints before publishing.

Do not confuse “no token” with unlimited access. Sleeper’s documentation gives a general rule to stay under 1,000 API calls per minute or risk an IP block. The figure is guidance, not a guaranteed quota, so a browser app should fetch only what it needs, cache stable responses, and avoid polling loops.
What changes if the simulator is commercial?
The no-cost statement applies to non-commercial use. Sleeper says commercial use requires contacting it to discuss licensing. If you plan to sell access, place the simulator inside a paid product, or use it to support a commercial service, obtain that permission before launch; the public documentation does not provide a price, affiliate arrangement, or automatic approval.
Which Sleeper endpoints provide the simulator’s inputs?
Use league metadata as the rules layer, rosters as the ownership and lineup layer, player metadata as the display layer, and matchups only when historical or opponent context is needed.
| Purpose | Endpoint | Fields to retain | When to fetch |
|---|---|---|---|
| League rules and status | /v1/league/<league_id> |
scoring_settings, roster_positions, season, status, and league identifiers |
Once when the user selects a league |
| Roster ownership and starters | /v1/league/<league_id>/rosters |
roster_id, players, starters, and season settings |
Once per refresh or when the user requests updated rosters |
| Player join table | /v1/players/nfl |
Player names, positions, team data, and other display fields keyed by player ID | Once per app session when possible; cache it locally |
| Weekly context | /v1/league/<league_id>/matchups/<week> |
Weekly starters, all players, matchup IDs, and points | Only for a selected historical week or opponent comparison |
The player endpoint is a complete NFL player map, so it is the join that turns opaque IDs in rosters and matchups into names, positions, and team labels. Keep the raw IDs as keys even after adding display data; IDs are more reliable than names for deduplication.
How should the browser-only architecture be organized?
Keep network data, normalized domain data, simulation state, and rendering state in separate layers. This prevents a nullable API field or a UI refresh from changing the model halfway through a trial.
1. Network layer
Build one small fetch wrapper that checks HTTP status, parses JSON, and applies a timeout. Store responses in a session cache keyed by the complete endpoint path. A failed player-map request should stop the simulation with a useful message rather than silently producing unnamed players.

const API = "https://api.sleeper.app";
const cache = new Map();
async function getJson(path) {
if (cache.has(path)) return cache.get(path);
const response = await fetch(API + path);
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`${response.status} for ${path}`);
const value = await response.json();
cache.set(path, value);
return value;
}
async function loadLeague(leagueId) {
const [league, rosters, players] = await Promise.all([
getJson(`/v1/league/${leagueId}`),
getJson(`/v1/league/${leagueId}/rosters`),
getJson(`/v1/players/nfl`)
]);
return { league, rosters, players };
}
The host name above is shown as the API origin used by the endpoint paths; confirm the current origin and CORS response during deployment. If your request volume or product requirements exceed what a browser can safely manage, move this wrapper behind a proxy rather than adding retries that multiply traffic.

2. Normalization layer
Convert string IDs, nullable values, and absent arrays into predictable local records before any scoring code runs. Preserve the league’s scoring_settings and roster_positions exactly, then expose a typed version to the simulator.
function normalizeRoster(raw) {
return {
rosterId: String(raw.roster_id),
playerIds: Array.isArray(raw.players) ? raw.players.map(String) : [],
starterIds: Array.isArray(raw.starters) ? raw.starters.map(String) : []
};
}
function indexPlayers(rawPlayers) {
return Object.fromEntries(
Object.entries(rawPlayers).map(([id, player]) => [String(id), {
id: String(id),
name: player.full_name ?? "Unknown player",
position: player.position ?? null,
team: player.team ?? null
}])
);
}
Do not let a missing team or position crash a trial. Mark it unknown, report it in validation, and decide whether that player can legally occupy a slot. Keep the original payload available for diagnostics so users can identify a stale or incomplete record.
How do you turn roster positions into legal lineups?
The roster_positions array is the league’s slot definition, while each roster’s starters array is an ordered set of player IDs. Treat the positions array as authoritative; never hard-code a particular league’s number of quarterbacks, flex slots, or defensive positions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsValidate the source lineup
- Check that every starter ID appears in the roster’s full
playerslist. - Check that the starter count matches the number of starter slots implied by
roster_positions. - Check for duplicate starter IDs and flag them instead of scoring the lineup twice.
- Join each ID to player metadata and report unknown positions before simulation.
Generate alternatives
For a best-lineup calculation, generate assignments of eligible players to slots, honoring each slot’s position rule and using each player at most once. A backtracking search works for normal fantasy-roster sizes: choose the most constrained slot first, try eligible players, and backtrack when a later slot has no candidate. For larger search spaces, use a branch-and-bound score ceiling or cap the number of candidate assignments and disclose that cap.
A Monte Carlo lineup simulator is different from a single best-lineup optimizer. You can hold the user’s chosen starters fixed, sample outcomes for them, and show uncertainty; or sample legal alternative lineups and compare their distributions. Label which mode is active so a high median is not mistaken for an optimizer’s guarantee.
How should scoring use the league’s settings?
Score every sampled player outcome with the selected league’s scoring_settings, not with a universal fantasy-football formula. The settings object defines how the league values statistical events; your normalized scorer should map each event to its configured weight and apply the result to the player’s sampled stat line.
function scoreStats(stats, scoringSettings) {
let total = 0;
for (const [event, value] of Object.entries(stats)) {
const pointsPerEvent = Number(scoringSettings[event] ?? 0);
total += Number(value || 0) * pointsPerEvent;
}
return total;
}
This deliberately generic function is a starting point, not a claim that every payload uses identical event names or that all scoring rules are simple multipliers. Add explicit handling for bonuses, deductions, yardage thresholds, and other rule types represented by the league configuration you support. If a rule cannot be represented safely, mark the league unsupported instead of quietly returning a misleading total.

Where do the Monte Carlo probabilities come from?
Sleeper documents data access, not a projection model, trial count, confidence interval, or probability distribution. Those are your design decisions and must be visible in the interface. A transparent first version can use historical points from selected matchup weeks as an empirical distribution; a forward-looking version needs a separate outcome model built from projections or user-entered ranges.
Historical mode
Fetch /v1/league/<league_id>/matchups/<week> for the weeks the user selects. Use each player’s documented weekly points as observations, sample one observation per trial, and preserve the week labels so the user knows exactly what was sampled. This mode describes variation in the chosen history; it is not a forecast of a future game.
Forward mode
Define a distribution per player and statistic. Options include a discrete list of scenario outcomes, a user-supplied low/median/high model, or a distribution fitted from external projections. State the source, date, and independence assumptions. If you sample players independently, explain that correlation from game script, weather, or teammates is not represented unless you add it deliberately.
A simple trial loop
function runTrials(lineup, outcomeSamplers, scoringSettings, trials) {
const totals = new Array(trials);
for (let i = 0; i < trials; i++) {
let total = 0;
for (const player of lineup) {
const sampledStats = outcomeSamplers[player.id]();
total += scoreStats(sampledStats, scoringSettings);
}
totals[i] = total;
}
totals.sort((a, b) => a - b);
return totals;
}
From the sorted totals, calculate the mean, median, selected percentiles, and the fraction of trials above a user-defined threshold. Use a seeded pseudo-random generator if you need reproducible links or regression tests; display the seed so two runs can be compared. Never present a simulated win probability as a Sleeper-provided fact.

Show the central estimate and spread together. A compact result card can contain median points, mean points, a middle percentile band, and the percentage of trials above the chosen threshold. Add a histogram or density chart so users can see skew and outliers rather than inferring certainty from one number.
- Display the league ID, season, scoring mode, and roster used.
- Display the number of trials and random seed, if applicable.
- Display the historical weeks or projection source used to build each player distribution.
- Warn when a player lacks enough observations or when a scoring rule was ignored.
- Distinguish “selected lineup” results from “best legal lineup” results.
Use a web worker for large trial counts so chart updates do not freeze the main thread. Send only normalized records to the worker and return aggregate statistics plus a small sample for charting; there is no need to copy the entire player map for every trial.
Should you choose browser-only or a backend proxy?
Both designs can produce the same calculations. The trade-off is control: a browser-only app is simpler and keeps user data local, while a backend can absorb repeated requests and enforce policies centrally.

| Concern | Browser-only | Backend-assisted |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure | Static hosting and JavaScript only | Requires a server, proxy, or scheduled worker |
| API key | Not needed for Sleeper’s read-only API | Still not needed for basic reads, but secrets can be protected for other services |
| Caching | Session or browser storage; each user may repeat downloads | Shared cache can serve many users from one refresh |
| Rate control | Must throttle every client and handle hostile refreshes | Centralized limits, retries, and request queues |
| Privacy | Raw league data can remain on the user’s device | League IDs and responses pass through your infrastructure |
| Reliability | Depends on browser CORS and the user’s connection | Proxy can insulate the UI from CORS changes and normalize responses |
Start client-side when the tool is exploratory, non-commercial, and comfortable with live endpoint availability. Add a proxy when you need shared caching, scheduled historical archives, analytics, authentication, or stronger protection against abusive traffic.
How do you stay within Sleeper’s request guidance?
Fetch the player map once per session, cache league and roster responses, and load matchup weeks only after the user selects them. Debounce refresh controls, cancel obsolete requests, and use exponential backoff only for transient failures. Never retry a failing request in a tight loop.
Track a rolling request counter in the client and stop optional requests before approaching the documented 1,000-calls-per-minute general rule. Because many users can share one public IP, leave substantial headroom. A static app should also show a clear “data unavailable” state rather than encouraging repeated reloads.
What can go wrong, and how do you recover?
CORS or network failure
Show the endpoint and browser error, offer a retry button with cooldown, and record whether the failure occurred during league, roster, player, or matchup loading. If direct browser access stops working, a small server-side proxy is the architectural fallback.
Unknown or retired player IDs
Keep the ID in the roster, display an “unknown player” row, and exclude it only after explaining how that changes lineup legality. Do not substitute a similarly named player automatically.
Malformed or changing scoring settings
Validate required rules before running trials. If a setting is unsupported, list it and stop scoring rather than silently assigning zero points.
Slow or frozen simulations
Move trials to a web worker, process them in chunks, and update progress periodically. Let users cancel a run; cancellation is more useful than a browser tab that appears hung.

Misleading confidence
Require an assumptions panel before showing percentages. A narrow distribution created by an overly optimistic model is not evidence that the lineup is safe.
What should you test before publishing?
- Load a known league and verify that the displayed season, scoring settings, roster slots, and starter IDs match the source response.
- Run a deterministic test with a fixed seed and hand-calculated player stats; confirm the scorer returns the expected total.
- Test empty, null, duplicate, and unknown IDs in roster and matchup payloads.
- Verify that a legal lineup uses every starter slot once and that an illegal assignment is rejected.
- Throttle requests in development and confirm the cache prevents repeated player-map downloads.
- Test a denied network request, a non-2xx response, and a changed payload shape with actionable messages.
- Compare historical mode with a manually calculated week to ensure points and matchup IDs are joined correctly.
- Run the UI on mobile and in a browser with JavaScript workers disabled, then provide a reduced-size fallback.
What is the practical build sequence?
- Accept a league ID and validate its format locally.
- Fetch league metadata and retain scoring, roster positions, season, and status.
- Fetch rosters and normalize player, starter, and roster IDs.
- Fetch and index
/v1/players/nflonce per session. - Join IDs to names, positions, and teams, then run lineup validation.
- Ask the user to choose historical weeks or provide a forward outcome model.
- Run trials in a worker, score with the league settings, and calculate distribution metrics.
- Render assumptions, uncertainty, and errors alongside the result.
- Cache stable data, throttle refreshes, and recheck CORS, endpoint payloads, rate guidance, and commercial-use terms before release.
This sequence keeps the boundary clear: Sleeper supplies the league state and player identifiers; your application supplies normalization, probability assumptions, simulation code, and interpretation. That separation is what makes a zero-backend implementation both understandable and maintainable.

Can users run the simulator on a phone or tablet?
Yes, provided the browser supports modern JavaScript and the fetch API. For long runs, use a Web Worker and a progress indicator so the interface remains responsive; offer a smaller trial count when memory or CPU is limited.
Can I save a simulation so someone else gets identical results?
Use a serialized configuration containing the league ID, selected roster or lineup, model assumptions, trial count, and a random seed. A seed reproduces the pseudo-random sequence only when the code and input data are unchanged, so include the data date or snapshot identifier as well.
How should I handle players who change teams during a season?
Keep the player ID as the stable key and store team labels with each observation or projection period. Do not merge observations solely by team name; decide whether your model is player-based, game-based, or split by period and document that choice.
Is a historical matchup distribution valid for predicting next week?
It is descriptive rather than automatically predictive. Historical points reflect the selected weeks and their opponents, usage, injuries, and scoring rules; a forward forecast needs a separate model and an explicit explanation of how those differences are handled.
